You guys saved me. I was about to give up on my cheap DIY kit from eBay until I heard your narrative. Best guide out there for this.
Thanks!
This is a very informative video guys! Thanks a lot for sharing, as educational videos like this will almost always be useful. Keep up the great work!
I like the intro to basics of FPV setups. I truely belive this is the direction RC is taking these days. I am a beginner to RC only about a year of flying now, but the greatest thrills are FPV flying both Tricopters and sailplanes. So many crafty ways to do these things (safety should be forefront though (not AMA but just common sense)). Dig it!
ouch, glad to see you survived and your teaching people about all this cool stuff, keep it up all you guys love the show.
3rd upload in a week god they must be felling ill but im loving it keep it coming
Just went FPV-ing with my dad (he doesn't fly, just my taxi) he didn't tell me which direction i was away and before i knew it I'd crashed a kilometer away in the middle of a paddock, and by crashed i mean, landed it perfectly with out seeing it at all! :D all intact and nothing broken at all! Safe to say I am now investing in RTH and a powerful video transmitter and some good antennas!
Yay a more in depth video! please go more in depth on frequencies and provide benefits for each :D thank you
This is a good setup. If you are using a 3 cell battery, go with a t connector and use 1 battery for flight and tx/camera power.
Any possible chance of a updated version of this video?
And now
And now, the link is bad for the hobby king camera

900MHz kit was arrived Yesterday and I hooked all up,
Rx set CH "0" and default(leave as it is) for Tx
As this fast tips, wide lens was installed instead and got better wide view.
Working great but Tx is hot, so I put Al cool Fin front and back for better cooling.
Great helpful tip video to setup FPV for beginner like me
I havent seen your channel before, but you guys did a really great job on this video.
i bought this camera from hobbyking awhile back it worked great, just make sure your white connector on the camera is not reversed, mine was and luckily it dident fry the camera when i put power on it. if it is reversed simply grab it with pliers and pop it off and turn it and slide it back on the connectors.
This basic setup has an range about 500-700m. Upgrading the receiver and transmitter + adding clover leaf antennas will give you longer range.
Or just simply add Clover leaf antennas on both of the antennas and instantly get better range.
If your controller is 2.4GHz you need the 5.8GHz setup, because 2.4GHz combined with 2.4GHz can cause severe interference in your video signal.
He's fine. He just has a busy schedule right now. He'll be back on Monday :)
That depends on the antenna you use.
If you use a scew planer antenna and a clover leaf, you should get around 2 kilometers.
FliteTest has uploaded a video on FPV antenna's.
RCModelReviews also has a nice video explaining Gain with antenna's.
I suggest you watch both videos.
Love the bit about changing to proper glass lense! this is so helpful for me as my camera wasn't great. I have been using a 808 #18 instead but after this i will have some use for the stock camera now! thank you
Nice spot guys. I bought this set up and seems to work well. Love to see a segment about monitors.
Guys, thanks so much for this vid! It seems that for whatever reason this info is surprisingly hard to come by.
Could you put up an article about how you made the custom connector?
That was extremely helpful. thanks Josh and Chad!!! 👍👍

The monitor has auto tune so you do not have to flip through channels etc.
good demo guys ~ great to see your choice of camera devices deviates from the big name units ~ I have yet to need flight sound on any of my jobs .
Thanks for the demo / explanations !
Great vid, very helpful. Luckly I watched this first as I was just about to order the wrong kit...!
Excellent, easy to understand video. Well done.
I am now getting an fpv system :) Thanks to you! Keep it going!
Perfect, just what I needed..... Keep up the good work..... Hey we're did Josh go???
This was an awesome tip, definitely going to recommend to my RC friends who want to get into FPV to check out this video. Excellently done guys :-)
I've been looking for a simple video like this for 3 hours... -.-
me too
Lynett Bryant lol
Only 3. :)
Yes you are right.
But the 11.1V is measured when the battery is about half drained.
A fully charged LiPo will put out around 12 Volts.
When they started pulling out the rca cable I knew something was up, but i didnt expect the video to be over 10 YEARS OLD! Wow
To calculate the flight time, take the battery's capacity in amp per hour, then divide the battery's capacity by the average amp draw and multiply the answer by 60.
So, if your motors would run on max, you would get around (2.2/18)x60=7.3 minutes.
Now, you dont want to fully discharge your lipo so i would say about 5 minutes is the maximum flight time.
Wow.. That was a nice little video giving a taste of what it takes to get started with FPV Flying.. I need to watch a longer video showing a compleate in depth video on how to FPV, and how to get better & better equipment so that maybe one day I can travel as far as some of the people here on RUclips have traveled, which from what I've seen so far it was 8 miles. But I've heard of a guy flying from Canada to Ireland which is like 3,020 km, or 1,876 miles. Nice video, thanks guys, (+1 : 1,079)
I have this same kit. I even did a review video on HK. the only problem i had with it, was the video and positive wire to the camera was reversed. Thank fully i spotted it before hooking up. Nice out fit...... well worth the buck....
Very informative! I have been watching for a while and am thinking about building an FPV setup very soon. I will probably start with this kit. Thanks!
PLEASE THUMBS UP SO OTHER PEOPLE CAN READ!!!!
The reason that the transmitter gets hot is because its voltage regulator is dropping a lot of voltage these things actually run on a much smaller voltage. To find out what the voltage is look at the pcb and do a search for the on board chips ID No. and one should be a set voltage regulator, the data sheet tells you the actual working voltage!
Another thing that makes video transmitters hot is having undersized antennas for them which is kind of common with the extremely small transmitters and with the 900MHz transmitters. The difference between a decent antenna and a poorly matched antenna can more than double your range!
Awesome thanks guys just what I needed. Any chance you could do a middle off the road and a top end fpv setup?
Excellent video, guys. If you can, maybe show how you would use the GoPro, plus view video via the Shark goggles? None the less, thanks for the great tip.
This is basic video only.. To add a heads up (called OSD - On Screen Display) requires an additional module between your camera and the transmitter..
Camera -> OSD -> Transmitter
I like chad, boom, straight to the point, a little stressing sometimes. But i cant wait till my stuff comes home to start building my tricopter.
How everything has changed, chad doing a tutorial...
make sure that your 5.8 tx is a match to your 5.8 rx. There seems to be two sets of frequencies that the 5.8 GHz models operate with and they do not overlap. As far as I have seen there is fat shark compatible and a second set that will not work with fatshark's set.
The quality of the video on the FPV monitor is so nice... Is it real wireless FPV-video?
Thanks guys! I really enjoyed this vid, and it definately helped me in my choice for a system. Damn those cheap cameras have good video quality too!
yep u are correct. A tech licence is required,in the USA and simple to get. I have full amateur licence , known as the extra class. If you operate with out i don't think the FCC would track you down to much. only if interference is caused to other band users.
Great video! How much range can one expect from this 200mW transmitter ?
Thats awesome... is there a way of maybe using your iPad as a monitor?
I just rolled through a dozen of your videos, and have to force myself to get back to bed - but, I was wondering what kind of HMD y'all are using for the FPV rigs? I've been pondering the different options for quite a while and would love to know if you've got a favorite, or maybe what applications are best for a specific type of display? I'm *so* going to be putting a versa wing together tomorrow.
Was wondering why it got so hot, thanks for the tip!
“Me this must be old”
Looks
*7 years*
Me wow
This is exactly what I've be looking for. Thank you so much!
Loved the video, guys, thanks!
They compared 900mhz and 2.4ghz, watch?v=PGp1uD0xiYU
It doesnt make that much difference, its more to do with how much work you put in.
I have 5.8 and 900, 2.4 and 5.8 antennas are easier to make as they are smaller than 900
So you could have a 12wind helical directional antenna for 5.8 that will fit in palm of your hand, but be massive and for 900. Depends on your plane as well, you will be happy with 5.8
Thanks guys! Nice job as always!
Excellent job guys. Very well explained precise TKS --Dennis
Awesome. been wanting to get an FPV but wasn't really sure what i needed. Whats the range on these usually?
Hey this really awesome! i am just getting into fpv and am wondering i can get that adapter for the battery that allows you to hook it up straight to the reciever? FliteTest
Thanks a lot!
You guys rock even if you're in the pocket of big hobby
YES IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS EPISODE> awesome video
Hi, great video! I am thinking of building David's windestl's tricopter with my Futaba 6EX transmitter (2.4 GH) and this fpv setup. Two questions: could I run the tricopter motors and the fpv gear off the same battery? (and if so which one would be good?). Also, will I have video interference from my 6EX? I read somewhere that this could happen... sorry for being such a noob!!! Thanks, Franky
What type of connectors do you need for the battery? Please help! Thanks
Hi! Great tutorial, congrats!
What can you say about the range of this kit? Thanks.
I would suggest a 14x6 prop.
If that is too big and you need smaller props, I would go with a 12x6.
Those props along with a 3S lipo with a lot of mAh.
Since its a quad, I would go with the ZIPPY Flightmax 5000mAh 3S lipo with hardcase.
It does weigh a lot, but it does give you a lot of flight time.
as for the monitor being expensive, I just got a little a/v monitor from amazon, it's only 2.3", but it only costs $24, and best of all, if you mount it under the brim of a baseball cap and cover one eye with an eyepatch, it's almost as good as video goggles.
also, higher frequencies go shorter distances for the same amount of power. i.e, a 100mw 5.8ghz tx will give about 1/2 the range of a 100mw 900mhz tx.
Your video is very helpful. How would I go about recording the video images in this type of system?
Yes it will work together.
"university"?????? giggle.... supremely awesome vid broheims
How do I make an adapter?
The C rating is how many Amps the LiPo can put out continuously while holding a good voltage level.
So your 2200mAh 20C battery can put out 2.2x20=44 Amps continuously while holding a good voltage level.
Nice video guys. I am wondering if a separate battery would be needed if the camera has it's own power ? I have a Mobius ActionCam, and it has it's own battery.
Yes you still need to connect to a separate battery or the balance connector on your flight battery to power the tx, but that battery will last longer because your camera is self powered.
So when you connect everything to the video transmitter and battery the only the video cable connects to the wire not the power, and if you we're to power the möbius with the setup could you use a sbec
Im looking into buying this kit, I dont know if the range is worth the money, my question is how far can the transmitter be from the reciever and it still get a signal? Im talking about the out of the box set shown above
Outstanding video guys :)
Great video guys.
oh, if you order the set together it should work together right?
thanks guys your tips helped me a loooooooooooot
@FliteTest you need to re-visit this for 2021
Some ccd cmos cams can be damaged if the lens is removed while image chip is powered in bright light. Nice upgrade lens,
It always hard to say, so many variables
With my 5.8ghz 100mW with receiver built into fatsharks, I got 400 metres with standard antennas. So that will be 400m in any direction.
Then you can start making your own antennas cheap from scrap wire, then you can start making your own direction antennas and start doubling/tripling these distances.
All depends how much research and work you want to put in
with my 900mhz 800mw its about 1+km with omni antennas, depends on interfernce
You said You have DVR for recording the flight. I am trying to find out what is the best DVR for my ground station? Thanks Guys
Thanks allot guys much appreciated! Great video and info
Hey! I am going to build my 1st FPV system but it is confusing to find the correct VTX. I need to use my FPV system in a racing quad copter. what is the VTX I should use. There are many 200mW, 600mW, etc what VTX I should buy?
Grat video. A few questions first is the 900 mhs legal in the us and if not is it ok to run 2.4ghz video transmitter with 2.4ghz rc transmitter or will that cose problems. also what is the cheepest workable video moniter
please do a tutorial on how to make an inverted vee antenna!! I really want to do some good fpv and in your antennas video you said it was the best one that is easy to make.(i have seen the rcgroups thread but i like to watch hoe to do it better)
another great video, thanks.
whats the range on something like this? the 5.8g setup I want is out of stock. Which would go farther?
very clear guide. thanks!
Hi FlightTest, I wanted to say thanks for all the Video's. Appreciate the extra knowledge when needed. I have a question about this FPV. On the receiver Does the 12volt system have enough power to handle 2 or more feed displays at once without degrading the signal?
Thanks,
Brad
a laptop can be used as monitor or is a special device 4 that? thxs!! great video really helpfull
Many thanks for your prompt reply!
Awesome!!!! Thanks!!! Just 1 question.. can ya use a Gopro for fpv?
Yep.
I have never used ecalc before, but I think someone has said to me once that it doesn't calculate properly for quadcopter.
I have heared it, I am not sure.
What I would do is buy the 14x6 prop I suggested and a bigger prop.
Propellors don't cost very much.
It is better to experiment yourself then to rely in a calculator.
Can you do an updated FPV video involving more in-depth with the Ham Radio license?
I have a phantom 2 vision+, and really want to be able to view on a bigger screen. It is equipped with a 2.4ghz wifi transmitter, so could I just buy and use a 2.4ghz receiver and run it through a dvr? I don't want to spend the $$ on light ridge, when there seems to be much cheaper options
I've seen waves in the video when directly splitting the power from the battery for the motor. Does using the balance port, instead of splitting the normal power leads eliminate this issue?
Thx for the vidéo.
If I use this type of camera is there a way to record at the same time before the vidéo reach the transmetter ?
Hey guys really great video, looking to get into this, could you advise if this product is 2.4GHZ 100mW Tx/Rx & 1/3-inch CCD Camera PAL,
great video guys it helped me a lot ..thanks ..
These fast tips are great!! =D
Could you put a diagram on your website for how you made the adapter for the ballance conector?
