I am 71 years old. My dad worked for IBM he started working on mainframes in 1955 the first 2 ran with vacuum tubes. I would help him. He would tell me what to look for on a oscilloscope when he did something. Then I started working for them to but I was in the office products division for a while. I used the net to take class. But really do much else till they put seeds on it then Robbie(He died 12+ years ago) and I got to using it more. Had a supper fast 1440 modem. The people with DEFCON make me think I have never used a computer. Most of the people in the United State known nothing about security on the net and wi fi is not even close to being secure. When I was 30 I never dreamed so many people would have computers or pay so much for a smart(?) phone.

      @netsec_planes5443 5 лет назад +1

Mike Trieu I just read Applebaum’s talk which you got the “diode” detail from. In reality, a data diode is just an appliance that allows strictly one way data transfer. The NSA used diodes to forward command packets from their classified network to their unclassified covert network, which in turn forwarded the command packets to their (legitimate) spyware around the internet. As for Applebaum, he is a fear mongering idiot who doesn’t understand half of the technologies he’s talking about. Take anything he says with a grain of salt.

Are you telling me you'd rather stick your head in the sand and imagine that not seeing a problem makes it go away? Ignoring your enemy gives him an advantage over you. You know they're lying, that enables you to still glean information from them, assuming you actually think a bit. Notice how stuxnet wasn't attributed? That's tacit CONFIRMATION that the US took part in that. If your enemy is stupid enough to walk into your house and talk to you, let him talk. All he can do to a prepared mind is dig himself a deeper hole.

The whole presumption that companies have a right to your location and data is absurd. I know you like me had the understanding that clicking ok means I can access the site and that I have a reasonable expectation of privacy and not having my location tracked and logged. That's what it is for most people. Click okay means I can access this site. And I have privacy. I also didn't consent to having eugenics practiced against me. If you want to talk about those totalitarian regimes and their economic social credit system vs a eugenics program against people who disagree with you. What's worse? But I'm not willing to sacrifice privacy for absence of eugenics programs so neither. I don't agree with both and either.
Technology debt? That technology owes it back to us, the people not the nonliving corporations.

Just to be honest I should mention that I'm romanian. My country has had tumultuous relations over the years with most super powers. Romans, huns, ottomans, germans, russians and now the US. What I learned is that we always loose.
That being said, I work in IT. I manage servers for small companies. The type of companies that use wifi without password, a master password for the whole office, and each individual computer HAS TO HAVE a routable ip. I tried to explain they are showing their actual ports and stuff on the internet, and masquarade would be safer. but no.
As a result, during the last 2-3 years I had to say: "I told you so" several times. Eventually people learn. They OFC blame me because I didn't warn them, but I'm getting better at warning them.
Anyway, one of the first measures I took is to ban countries by ip's. which works very well. basically ban those 4 (russia, china, NK and iran). but then you have to continue with many others. like vietnam. I'm pretty sure they have a state department farm of servers to hack stuff. there's stuff in china's region of interference. there's all sorts of odd countries from various island states. all the baltic states that are favorable to russia. and the south american states which favor russia. and if you ban all of these people... you still get attacked from US, canada, mexic (although to be honest I banned them early on), and for me, worst of all, from inside the EU. Most of my clients have clients in the EU, US and Canada. Not much anywhere else. They only complain about the firewall ban when it comes to torrents and stuff. but for the most part, I can protect them by just creating a firewall between the countries that just don't have any type of relation to that firm. So far I didn't have a client that wants to collaborate with russia. although I think impartial as I am ... a job is a job. keep your mouth shut and do the job.
Anyway, getting back the original point, it's unfunny and uncool to be attacked from the "friends" part of the internet. I assume they are hacked systems, used by the bad actors (russia & co) to hack people like me that banned all of them. and I had like 2-3 years to log and catalogue a lot of ip's.
What pisses me off, is when on the western side of things, the abuse adresses in whois count for nothing. I tried multiple times to mail to "abuse@whoeverwasatwhois", from a legitimate email client (evolution), perfect smtp reputation, "look i think this ip is compromised because of this line in my logs which means blah blah blah". Must have sent over 200 reports. I got 2 responses. And none were pleasant. Could be an ISP, or a service provider, or a virtual machine provider, a firm, an education institution. I kept notes. At the first infraction you ip gets blocked for 24 hours. Second a mail would be sent to abuse with your infraction. If no reply ban forever. And I kept the lists. Which is kinda pointless because every once in a while I would check iptables. Which translates that in the space of a month, most hosts don't get back into the old pattern. I don't exactly know if it's my automatic mail that send the details to abuse, or if they discover on their own, but my impression is that we could improve the time variable at these things.
My philosophy is start with a small internet. There's really no legitimate reason that I should blindly accept connections from any Russia linked states. I asked my clients. The only thing people could come up with is torrents and hack stuff. Which is not a legitimate reason. So yeah, that.
And after that, if you see a computer in the free world that is trying passwords, or sending too many mails, or just tries weird URLs that are not on your server... just report it to abuse. and abuse people... pay attention to those emails. the abuse address in whois is there for a very good reason.
THIS was collected at my home. This is the top 10 wall of shame. First column is number of packets since: uptime 16 hours. Second column is number of bytes. Third column is geo country. Look up the codes.

Hopefully he assumed a new "writing profile" for his pseudonym

Summary through my cynical point of view:
    - Recap of the history of cyber, leading to the NSA's cyber appearance (boooriiing)
    - Russia is headstrong and malicious (doesn't sound like a good strategy to me)
    - China steals intellectual property
    - Iran is malicious (doesn't sound like a good strategy to me)
    - North Korea steals money
    - 37:00 - "These companies, like Facebook taking down Russian troll accounts [...] are going to know things on their platform and be able to see things that the government couldn't and shouldn't" - AHHAHAHHAHAH I'm suuuuure you don't wiretap everything
    - 38:40 complete change of context to "The intrusion lifecycle"
    - 43:54 "COLLOBORATE" !!!
Overall it seems like a random scattering of issues pertaining to the NSA. I wish it were more in-depth, for a more limited scope. For instance, "How we found Russians were behind hacking the election" or "Russia's strategy to destabilize the US economy".
But for a n00b talk, I think it's ok. At least it gave me a few non-compliant countries to pick as TOR exit nodes.
