Joey, love the video brother. Always liked to hear your insight on fishing methods/techniques, I have learned alot. That being said, I have never had the chance to fish for Tarpon or bigger species of fish. Where I fish here in Long Beach, CA spotted bay bass are the most fun from shore or from my inflatable kayak. We got great Calico fishing too, however, I dont trust these boaters out by the breakwall in a cheap inflatable kayak im rocking with haha. I have been wanting to get into fishing for bigs off the end of jettys in better fisheries more down south and this brings me into a question I have had and after seeing this video I have to ask.. Assuming 100% knot strength, and your 80 lb leader, even with the lighter 20 lb mainline, your able to pull that 80 lb resistance theoretically? So same if you go up or down in leader? If thats true, why would anyone ever want to use for example, a 50-80 braid besides if your fishing for fish near rocks, etc and need that thicker diameter? But other than that you gain no benefit from strength of the braid because your relying on the knot and leader?? If anyone can give insight, I would appreciate it. Sorry for the long comment fellas. Cheers.
Thanks a lot for watching and those are some good questions. I'll start by saying all braid is not created equal. The specific line I'm using is Spider Wire Ultracast 20lb. That line has a breaking strength near 40lb. I have tested that line myself and got 36lb. To do a true test, you would have to use a line testing device which has wheels on each side and does a straight pull test. In real life scenarios, the weakest point in the line will be the knots. Knots like the FG and the PR are almost as strong as your actual line. That means if your braid is breaking at 40lb and leader at 80lb You should be able to put pretty close to that amount of pressure before you break your main line. That could happen in a fraction of a second from a headshake on a heavy if you are palming the reel. If you take anything away from this, to spite whatever lb. the manufacturere says the line is, that does not mean that that is the breaking strength. Usually that means it breaks at no less than that number. Some manufacturers line brakes closer to the number and some don't. You'll have to do some tests on your own and figure out what works best for your type of fishing.
Understood! Thanks for taking the time to respond! Until next video! @@JoeyAntonelli Edit: I'm just gonna wrock the some braid on my setups from here on out. Tried and tested 😂
I walked up on Joey fighting this fish. He was fighting the Atlantic as much as the fish. I had my rod in my car but not enough horsepower and it’s clear you better be wearing your big boy pants when you hook one of these bad boys. Lol I thought I was recording him on my IPhone but never hit the record button. I told him and he handed me his QR code advertising his channel and said it would be on RUclips. Subscriber now. Go Joey!
That's a big Sardine! I'm glad the mullet run is finally in full swing! I'm just bummed I missed it last weekend because the shore pound was too big....
Smart fish. Kept turning his head into the curl. 9 minutes is super impressive, but that on-the-clock technique would have cost me a week of neck/back pain, a pair of sunglasses, a hat and 2+ hours cleaning my Penn reel. Great video!
THAT WAS AMAZING! That tarpon was owning you bro! The 11` rod had too much flex and the poon was owning that rod! Never give up, never surrender! A real beach and jetty fisherman might get wet and might bleed a bit, but its all in a days fun!
I have a similar rinse shower by Nemo, but it’s foot pump and can be refilled and used almost anywhere. Only $150 too. You can also just get a lawn pump sprayer from Home Depot or Lowe’s for $50 and they work pretty well too. So excited for the Mullet Run, I can’t wait to go! More videos on this please!
Nice catch there Joey, I was at coconut point maybe the same day, I caught some lady fish and used it for live bait, caught a snook but broke my line, maybe because I did not set my drag properly. I think I reeled it in took fast. Maybe I’ll try early in the morning next time. I also was carrying cast net which I think is too heavy, need a smaller one to handle. There was so much mullet and other bait fish. When can you start reeling the fish in? Should you wait till it stops taking line? I love your videos, maybe I’ll get to see you at the beach one of these days and learn from the expert !!!
In case anyone is wondering if you try that with a Daiwa BG 4500 with 25# braid, 50# flouro leader you might get almost spooled before getting frayed off at max drag on a tarpon of that magnitude. Even an underslot snook can fray off 50# leader if it is not hooked perfectly.
Amazing start to the 2023 mullet run brotha!! What beach on the east coast are you fishing? I live on the west coast wondering what beach would be best for the trip over.
One of your best videos ever! Informative, educational, loads of action!! I have to admit though that I was surprised that you didn’t back your way out of the shore breakers with the Tarpon like you normally do. Was there a reason why you did what you did with this fish, especially with all the sharks so close and breakers so violent???
That was a super fast landing on that Tarpon. Being that the SaltX has 50lbs of drag, do you think that plays a huge roll? Most reels in the 4000-6000 size reels has 25lbs-35lbs of drag.
Great video, but one think you must know with tarpon never stand in the water on fight them.stay a land an fight tarpon you get him out easier better and faster.great video through
550 yards. Just because the manufacturer says it's 20 pound. That does not mean it breaks at that. This particular line brakes much closer to forty pounds

I know tarpon aren't your most popular videos but I love em keep the poon show rolling!
I do enjoy them to fun day and fighting the surf on top off it

Wow this is epic, Joey! I’m afraid I wouldn’t be able to land such a big fish on a beach with that kind of shore break and drop off. Good job!

Nice to see your vids getting traction Joey, always one of the more underrated RUclipsrs

It’s that time again, Mr Mullet is on the Run and the Tarpon are Binging!
Great catch and I love the respect you have for this fishery.
Ran into the guy at the local Ace hardware. He was looking for speargun parts! 😮 Nicest dude ever, a true local fishing hero.
Another great video Joey catching that tarpon, keep up the good work! that was epic!
Excellent job Joey! Way to stick to the fight!
Great video, Joey, and an even greater job fighting that tarpon! WOW!

Sweet video Joey! Gotta say. Wow. Great catch and educational to boot.

Okay, that was epic. Great video, Joey. Thanks

I had seen a green tarpon with white spots that were in rows, about 6 inches spaced, a year ago.
I love saltwater fishing
Interesting video. there are a lot of fishes, i like to see fish.
Had to hit the like on this video and subscribe also of course. You earned it bro!
Tarpon \ Joey and sharks in the surf 😮

I'm sorry for your loss. 😅

Now that’s a fish, nice video
Another banger as usual
New sub here!! Amazing job!!!

I didn't want the fish to get thrown up onto the sand by a shore brake wave and I was feeling extra feisty.
Joey with the Teflon hands. Mine would be bleeding like an old man.
awesome! How are you connecting/tying 20 to 80?
he uses an FG knot
FG all day when Tarpon fishing.
Great Vid 🤙🏼🎣
You earned that one.
What county u in? Thought u said port Canaveral. Im in brevard too if that’s where it was
I feel like these videos are commercials for Tsunami 😄..great video though!
Why 20 pound braid? Genuinely curious.Figured you would use 40+.
I bought a fishing kayak with motor can u recommend a cooler and fish finder pls
Wow that was epic!

I have my reels set at about 17lb - 22lb of drag. Put a scale on your reel and see what that feels like. It may suprise you.
@@JoeyAntonelli greatly appreciate it
Great video, but one think you must know with tarpon never stand in the water on fight them.stay a land an fight tarpon you get him out easier better and faster.great video through
amazing. Such a big fish wird 20 lbs line? how many Yards Are on the reel?
550 yards. Just because the manufacturer says it's 20 pound. That does not mean it breaks at that. This particular line brakes much closer to forty pounds
Cool vid
great job
nice. as always
Put that SaltX to work!! 💪
Ideal bait for them?
That looked ruff
Could you get control with a BOGA GRIP?
Yes, but then you risk breaking their jaw and the fish could starve to death.
Is it the mullet season in Florida?
They're in the river year-round. Good luck around those pilings.
What plastic rugs using
20lb braid?
Whats the rod you are using ?
Which beach this ?
So good
Your name is CAMURUPIM in Brazil!!!
Awesome
My worry is the line snapping when I’m putting pressure on a fish, I see that you put pressure on a 70-80 pound fish
You also have to be able to trust. Your reel will be smooth under heavy pressure.
@@GiveThanksAndPraise I heard that part, it’s the mind thing
@@GiveThanksAndPraise I have a 4k saltist with 20lb braid and I feel like it would have a hard time with a big snook jack
Buddy needs tk bring back ladyfish snook fishing
I love sharking to
Stupid crazy good video!
548 years. . . about.
🤣
Wouldn't do that to my reels.
Rigs bot phones tarpon best swim baits
I get so sick and tire of you people advertising products and no link, WHERE IS THE DAMN RINSE TANK LINK?
Awesome
