Louie and Oscar the best ever on their instruments. Louie made MUSIC on the drums. I had the great pleasure of meeting him years ago. A true gentleman and an absolute delight. N.O.H. wasn't too shabby either. All three are gone now and there's not a day goes by that I don't miss them
My man the great Louie Bellson showing off his skills as one THE GREATEST jazz drummers in music history! I personally like his playing more when he's playing laid back and in the pocket. Like on the Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald duets. The great Oscar Peterson trio also performed with them as well. These cats made music that cleansed my soul.

What does it say about our society when such a beautiful human being with great talent and skill felt he had to put that on his head?! 😔 Love his drumming, and such a nice bloke to boot. 👍😀🥁👏🏻👌🏻
With these two masters we can witness the wonderous blend of phenomenal tecnique and the ability to swing. Either you swing or you don't... Louie and Oscer are among the very few who prove these two qualities are not mutually exclusive.
No. Swing is just a matter of shifting beats and subdivisions one way or the other. There are methods and techniques for learning this skill. Everyone who plays drums has to go through this process if they want to play swing or grooves to any real standard. No-one is born swinging, that's a hero-worshipper's myth, everyone works at it or worked at it.
Pro's Pro!! The Man can read ANYTHING! PERFECT TIME & FEEL!! Did T.V., Movie Soundtracks, Albums.....Top it all off ,he was a SUPER HUMAN BEING. Combination thats IMPOSSIBLE TO BEAT!
Hi, Glenn! Well said, sir. Buddy was without question a solid gold, 24 carat drummer, no doubt about that, but he had a 24 carrot personality. And that's being generous. They were nasty, bitter, mouldy carrots. Pretty sour, too. Maybe with some slugs on them. I never forgave Buddy for his sense of humour failure on The Muppet Show. Any other drummer having a battle with Animal would have let him win, and then got his revenge later on by doing something funny, probably with explosives or Miss Piggy. Not Buddy. Hell, no. His ego wouldn't let him be 'beaten' by a mere puppet, but even that wasn't the whole story. The real drummer who played Animal's parts couldn't be allowed to claim that he'd beaten the mighty Buddy Rich (and Buddy WAS mighty) even in a joke duel on a kids' TV show. That's really sad. So Buddy probably dictated how the battle would go - including the puppet's reactions (eyes wide, jaw dropping, etc), and no doubt insisted on Animal's adoring final words. People like Gene, Louie, Elvin, and so many more wonderful players were gentlemen and managed to achieve greatness without pouring crap on anyone. Buddy's many (many!) fans will say that being 'difficult' was part of what made him so great, and that he was as hard on himself as he was on those around him, but that's no excuse for behaving like a monster. Buddy Rich was a Ruddy Bitch. I'm not much of a drummer, but I know all about being one of those... ;-)

Louie Bellson is not only the nicest drummer I ever met, but also the nicest musician I ever met. I saw him in Chicago many years ago at the Jazz Showcase. He was happy to talk to people between sets and when I got to talk to him he said "It's great to see young guys like you being into jazz. If you had your own big band and you could pick any drummer from jazz history to drive your band, who would it be?" "Sonny Payne!," I immediately replied. "You really know your jazz! I wasn't expecting a young guy like you to pick Sonny, but you sure aren't wrong! Sonny Payne could drive a band like no other!" Thanks, Louie, for taking the time to talk to a young jazz fan and musician like me. I'll never forget it. Hearing of your passing in 2009 was truly one of my saddest days.

When Louie Bellson brought out 'Skin Deep' on a 78rpm record in the 1950s any lad who was interested in drumming wanted to be like Louie Bellson. Apart from Gene Krupa he was the first named drummer that I ever heard of. Went to see him do a drum clinic in about 1970 in London. He was amazing to watch and to hear him answering questions from the audience including questions from British jazz drummers Phil Seaman and Kenny Clare was an education in itself. Sounded like an absolute gent. Love watching him. He just makes it all sound so easy.......

The best at their instruments who ever lived . There's not a day goes by that I don't miss them severely. Thank goodness for RUclips. I had the great good fortune of meeting Louie Bellson once. What a kind, likable, gracious, polite person he was.
Traditionally, it seems that drummers who tension their snare heads tighter for "seemingly" better rebounding and articulation. Sure, a drummer will have a tighter head, which gives that firmer feel and rebound. I believe the drum moves less air inside, which I think, would hinder rebound hits on the head. You are working, perhaps a little harder to make the rebound happen. On the other hand, with the snare drum tensioned, as Louie did, he tensioned them a little lower than other drummers. The thing you have with this, is that, you are moving more air inside the drum now, because the head is reflexing "downwards" per stroke now, because the head has more give. This also enables good rebounding per hit. It sounds a little different. It is good for blending around the drums and during an band ensemble piece. With the head tighter, a drummer can be more intricate, accent easier without hitting too hard or too many rim shots, and stands out from the band. It's a matter of taste, in the end.
@@fabiobaglioni7617 Sorry for the jabbering on. I was just bringing it up, because of posts and replies ahead of mine on here. I thought it was an interesting bit to bring up for those who aren't sure how they should have their snare tuned. Whether higher or lower. Good video! Enjoyable!

Buddy Rich could have learned a thing or two from Louie about civility
I'm not much of a drummer, but I know all about being one of those... ;-)
Why does every Bellson video include a snarky comment about Buddy Rich? Never mind the fact that the two were friends. I don’t get it.
Buddy could have learned from almost anybody about being civil

Louie Bellson is not only the nicest drummer I ever met, but also the nicest musician I ever met. I saw him in Chicago many years ago at the Jazz Showcase. He was happy to talk to people between sets and when I got to talk to him he said "It's great to see young guys like you being into jazz. If you had your own big band and you could pick any drummer from jazz history to drive your band, who would it be?"
"Sonny Payne!," I immediately replied.
"You really know your jazz! I wasn't expecting a young guy like you to pick Sonny, but you sure aren't wrong! Sonny Payne could drive a band like no other!"

Louie was endorsed by Remo. Otherwise, I don't think he'd be bothered with roto toms.
He didn't need roto toms to make drums sound great.
Had Enough 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Imagine he enjoyed roto toms since younger guys all using them.
@@RoryVanucchi louie didn't add the roto toms until he was 51 in 1975 , but he used them to great effect !
Oh...his parents owned a music store in Moline, Illinois..
Many , Many Thanks dear Mr. Vue U ., for this Your ''Master - Drums - Lesson'',..-
