  • This is a reaction video of the Amboy Dukes performing "Journey To The Center Of The Mind." Ted Nugent kicks butt on the guitar.

The song was of its day, the musicianship was faultless -- the thing I like best is when they reverse the camera shot 180 degrees for a portion after the start. 13 years before MTV!

Ted Nugent, absolutely phenomenal on the 'Byrd' (Gibson Byrd.land). Always love that moment when John Drake pauses singing for the instrumental turns and points to Ted to 'take it away'. And Ted does. What a mid-song instrumental.

I love Ted's double tab on the top of his guitar before he ends his solo. He has always been a super guitarist and showman.

Hi Flash ... Very cool. Amboy Dukes were great. I saw Ted Nugent with Kiss and Skid Row in Milwaukee in May of 2000. He was awesome as always. Enjoy ...

Lotsa fun seeing you react to this, Todd! I'm a old-timer who grew up in the Detroit area in the 60s, and the Nuge was my guitar hero. Saw him live with the Amboy Dukes several times at the Grande Ballroom and other venues. IMO, he was a more interesting and melodic guitar player than in subsequent years when he was on his own and a top-grossing act. His instrumentals blew me away -- Scottish Tea from the 'Journey' album and Migration from the followup, especially. If you haven't checked out the Migration album, there's a lot more great guitar work and a more polished-sounding recording session. Also, Greg Arama's bass playing was very advanced for its time. I think these guys were still in their late teens when these were recorded. That's amazing!
I've spent many hours -- MANY! --- over the years slowing down 'Journey', trying to pick out exactly what Ted was doing, using increasingly-sophisticated software to try to break it all down. There were quite a few surprises along the way -- things I picked up on that were hard to hear. Finally, after all this time, I can make a pretty passable attempt at it on the guitar, although I don't have a Byrd. There are some nuances that I've ferreted out that I haven't seen in any of the many cover versions that appear on RUclips.
Interestingly, there are parts that are heard in the original version that even Ted doesn't play the same way -- little sections that I've not seen on any of his YT performances where he plays them like on the record.
I could go on -- but I won't! Thanks for bringing this to the attention of your subscribers -- it's a GREAT song!!!

I only have the Amboy Dukes Journey album. I will check out the Migration album. May pick a track to do a video for. I love Ted cause he says and does what he pleases! Thank you for your great comment!
