I actually have my Molucan on a birth control implant to control egg laying and nesting behavior. It costs $300 every 3 months. Medication for anxiety, $45/mo. Her first human died. She ended with a family that abused her. She was emotionally neglected and live starved. She has a variety of behavior problems we are working on. She came to me at the age of 21. Learning to trust us our primary goal. All that said, I could not imagine a life with out her. She comes first and foremost.

Just watching the "normal' parrot videos was enough to make me fully, 100%, and totally understand I'm never getting one or could never have one. I'd like a friend who has one I could visit.. but I just can't see how anyone would want to own one.

We own a white crested umbrella cockatoo since he was a few weeks old. We owned his mom and she was agressive wanted to be breed. So we gave her to a breeder and in return we got pick of the litter. Ours is called goofer, hes 25 yrs old now, hes fully mature, he has a wide vocabulary but is really good at imitating the voices in the family.
I am considered his human, I come around my parents place and he instantly asks for me and wants to see me and gets very loud if he can see me. I prune his crown whatever he let's me, we delute his spray bottle we use to keep his dust down with a cap full of mouth wash to help break up his dust better and it keeps him a very nice white. His favorite thing to do is destroy dog toys, the cloth ones take longer, but when we feel like seeing a 25$ bird toy get destroyed in a day we buy him something in wood and he turns it into sadest by the end of the day. When we got him, we had a 6ft tall iron bar cage for him, very simple design, yet strong enough to keep him from breaking the bars. 2 weeks in and he broke the lock right off and we found him playing with it in his cage. We found out over the years if he sees you unlock his cage more then once he knows how to pick the locks and break out. We have to use these small clamp like locks that need thumbs to open them so he cant break out. We even used a paddle lock once and found him breaking bars off his new cage and trying to pick the lock as he knew it needed a key. We weld his cage together every few months as he has broken the bars off and he does it for fun. He likes to hide them at the bottom of his cage and when we ask what hes done with them he will sit on his perch and look everywhere but at you. His favorite snack are unsalted peanuts, loves bananas but are very messy and he loves to peel oranges and grapes. When he was a baby he fell off his perch and broke his nail off, for those who dont know bout birds in general. Any bleeding is incredibly dangerous for a birds health. They are 75% air, and hallow bones allow them to take flight. They also have air pockets in their chest area so flying into windows is very scary for them. They have no protection for their air pockets and their bones are very brittle and can break easily. Bleeding for them can also be a death sentence if it's not treated a.s.a.p. so for our bird he got lucky cause he had a very bad bleed. Bow 23yrs later, he has a nub for a nail and it works with his personality just right. Hes a bit more aggressive with males, but if you nice hell warm up quickly. I dont allow guest to hold him or pet him due to my concerns of him biting your finger off due to being scared. I'm the only one who hasn't been bitten by him, he has made it clear he will never bite me as long as I remain his friend. But that has not stopped him from grabbing my index finger with his beak before to catch his balance and quickly let go while kissing my finger as if to say sorry. That slight grab alone left 4 thin paper cut like cuts on my finger and I learned a long time ago, i dont want him to ever accidentally do that to someone else. So i tell guest if your gonna do anything with him have someone in the family with you so we can judge his behavior with you because like any wild animal. They can turn in a second. Lucky me, i was 4 when we got him, I've literally grown up with him and I know every one of his moods, his moves, his reactions, his reasons. So I can quickly asses if I need to step back or if I know hes safe, my respect for him shows in the fact that he has never attacked me and is always quite happy to see me.
For the record, i have extensive animal training as well as bird handling skills. This is not your beginner pet. This is your, I work and handle these animals on a daily basis and I only rescued him cause he had no where else to go. My parents even admit they never should of gotten him because he deserves to be with his own kind. But due to him growing up with strictly humans, he cannot live in the wild. He has no idea how to fend for himself. So we will live with us forever being part of thefamily.
These birds live up to 100yrs, these birds are a lifetime commitment, they leave nothing untouched when they are loose, clipping their flight feathers is extremely important as these birds do not fly like smaller birds do. These birds need lots of space to fly as their wing span can be up to 4ft wide and they do not fly to a direct spot, they fly to the high spot due to their instincts from the wild. These birds are endangered, you should never buy them off the black market, only get them from a breeder as that means they were not inhumanely captured and naturally cant be freed anyway. Plus a breeder insures that the animals were properly breed and document their bracelet number when you get the anima. It wheres off over years and its incredibly important to have incase the animal escapes, or becomes sick for no reason. The number traces back to its breeder who is licensed with the bird organizations and they keep documents incase a bird like disease breaks out they know where it came from. My parents raised cockatiels for years and this was a very important part and they never skipped a banned, even our privately owned cockatiels were banned and reported. Do your research in their diet too, your bird should never have fat on it, if it does your diet is completely wrong and you need to correct it. Always have a trained professional clip their nails and their wings. You clip their flight feathers too short you can actually cause them to bleedout. any bird is like this. Always put decals on your window so the birds know that's a window and not a exit. Put bird harnesses on them when you take them outside, even if they are tripped so this prevents them from grabbed from another animal and being eaten. Cats are good at that.
Last but not least, the person who made this video... you sound like a clueless 15yrs old. I know you mean well, but parrots are no jokingmatter, the bird I have can cut your finger off, i also had two blue macaws and i have a scar on my finger for life because he grabbed my finger when I was 7 and I wasnt looking and his beak was so sharp, I didnt feel it cut my finger open till i saw my hand covered in blood. I never blamed him, i was in the wrong because i took my eyes on him. He was just merely tasting my finger and didnt want my hand to go away yet. Large birds are loud, smart, and can be your best friend if properly trained and handled. But explaining it with such minor detail in this video actually drives me crazy because you didnt even scratch half of the surface when it comes to these animals. in the end, I ended up with one because I grew up with him. I have never encouraged anyone to own one and I never will. These creatures belong in the tropical rainforests like the Amazo. Not in peoples homes.

Had 2 smaller parrots. They were meant to scream across jungles, not the living room! You learn that early on. One chose to go punk. (Plucked out its feathers.) the other escaped from his cage outside. Heartbreaking! I kept my punk bird at a bird store while on vacation. Came back to find all the feathers grew back in. I ended up realizing she was happier in a flock! The owner made a deal that he would keep her indefinitely in a flock for her happiness. Now I found out that they're endangered in the wild because of the capture for pets! So wrong!

We have a 28 year old sulphur crested cockatoo. We have had her for about 5 years. Her previous owner died of old age. My wife is a bird lover and is so good with parrots. I was very skeptical at first when we got Dini but she grew on me so fast. It’s like having a toddler in the house lol. She is such a gentle and kind soul. She’s very obedient, she’s potty trained, she doesn’t bite, she’s so cuddly, she’s quiet compared to other birds, she is with us outside of her cage every day when we are not at work. She flies around the house, watches movies with us, eats meals with us and enjoys a nice bath. She is a big baby though, she is shy of little kids and some women but LOVES men. She’s quite the character lol

I have a Lovebird. Oh, he's so sweet and cuddly and has such a cute little face. BUT, I tell people that I do NOT recommend a Lovebird for anyone who has never owned a parrot! As much as I THOUGHT that I did my research and watched videos showing what it is like to care for a Lovebird - videos that talked about how loud they are, how hyperactive they are, the work involved in cleaning their cage, etc., NOTHING prepared me for the reality of the volume and frequency of their screech or how much constant interaction they need. I thought he would just hang out and chill on a perch while I went about my day, and ride on my shoulder every now and then. LOL LOL LOL!! NO, nothing prepared me for the reality. I love him so much, but at the same time, he truly robs me of my peace, almost on a daily level. But I do still love him 🙂.
Thank you for posting this video. It's so important for people to be aware of the reality of owning a parrot. It's not all fun and sweetness, by any means.

My Cockatiel was so loud when I left, I could hear him all the way out to the underground parking lot. He chewed the plaster of the corners, chewed wood cabinets and moldings. He lived to age 25yrs. I always had to check my blouse because he'd poop down my back and shoulder. My daughter brought him and another Cockatiel, It was supposed to be temporary, I gave the other one to my niece, they used to fight all the time.

I have a blue front amazon for 30 years and you hit the nail on the head when you said - noise, mess, need for attention, destruction, and long life.. It is a huge commitment that people should really think about before they invest in one. I had a Nanday Conure, he was given to me by a friend bc i seemed to be the only one that could teach him tricks. I loved him!! I never clipped his wings, he would sit on my shoulder, give kisses, turn around, silly little things but nonetheless. We were outside the very 1st of spring, beautiful day, and i let Lindy out of his cage. Flap, flap, flap, on the phone wire, flap, flap, up in a tree. I'm freaking out!! Lindy has been an indoor bird since he was a hen grenade!! I got a ladder, climbed into the tree and he flew to the next tree over!!😳. Needless to say, i chased him all over the neighborhood all day until he flew AWAY!! 🥺. That night we had one of the worst thunderstorms i can remember, i cried all night long... Poor Lindy. The next morning i was at the laundromat and a guy walked in and said "wow, sounds like someone's parrot got loose". 0mg!! It's MY PARROT! WHERE, WHEN?? WHICH DIRECTION??!?? believe me when i tell you (the vet told me you hardly ever get them back) he was as happy to see me as i was to see him!! Yes! He was too close to a Robins nest and they were swooping down on him, he was glad when i shouted his name, he sqawked, and landed, i bent down , he jumped on my arm, the rest is history!👍😉🙂

Hi Max and the flock! I don't have a parrot (yet) but hoping to get one someday. Well I used to live with grandpa who had doves and chickens. The doves weren't so much of a mess but the chickens would dig up every square inch of your garden. When one rooster starts crowing, a rooster chorus follows. When a hen cackle as she lays an egg, you get a chorus of hen's cackles. It was a mad house but they are the best pet!
I've been watching a lot of parrots on youtube and instagram-well I still have time to prepare to give my future feathered babies the life and home they deserve.

Great plan! Remember that even without a formal parrot sanctuary, there may be birds in need of a new home. Max came from a private home, not a sanctuary. Talk to other parrot owners and try to find parrot clubs in your area - they may know of birds needing a new home. The other thing to check is with the local SPCA/Animal Shelter. Although our SPCA is primarily focused on dogs and cats, occasionally they will have exotics placed with them for rehoming.

Not all breeds get along with each other. Before working with a breeder consider talking to some of the parrot rescues. They are full to the brim and have an abundance of really nice birds. Mango was a direct adoption, but he is an example of a bird who otherwise would have ended up in a rescue.
With an older bird you also know the personality and temperament - you know exactly what you are getting into. Babies hit a lot of changes and very often are rehomed in the first few years because their owners realize what they actually are like. It is why our rescues are overflowing.
Birds can live a very long time - my flock will likely outlive me. Max, Mango and Tikal are all with me as their second home. Adopting older birds is incredibly rewarding

Unless it is a rescue, or part of a project to save an endangered species, I don't think there is any excuse for keeping a parrot as a pet, regardless of how one intends to or does treat the bird.
Expanding markets for birds as pets are, in fact, a real problem, one of several forces driving the destruction of some species survival outside of direct human control.
All of the behavioural problems discussed in this video can be dealt with, sure - the video is actually very good - but fundamentally these issues are a consequence of forcing an intelligent, very long-lived bird to adapt to you and your needs, FOR you and your needs.
Making a cockatoo, for instance, live as a pet is at its core exactly forcing them to adapt to you, for your own purposes.
I do relate to sulphur-crested cockatoos in Australia, but they are wild, non-domesticated birds.
People have impacted upon their degree of control over their lives - which is why so many have been coming into cities in recent years, in part as previous habitats are destroyed or they are forced out by droughts or even by farmers who wish to protect their crops from being eaten by the birds who lived in the area well before people began to undertake large-scale farming, or large-scale de-forestation.
But in my own relations with them, I attempt to have them maintain as much control as possible. They may visit, they may spend time eating and relating, a couple of them will come stand on my shoulder as I walk around the backyard or on my knee if I am sitting down, but when they want they can just fly away, and then they are back with their flocks and partners, returning when they wish - which could be every second day or every second week, or every day for a week and then not at all for three months.
Their primary existence is still in the social world of other birds, so they are never going to start saying words in English. But I've come to understand the general meaning of the sounds they make and most of their gestures, and some of them have clearly become able to interpret our repeated behaviours and in some cases some of our words - only one cockatoo responds very obviously to the name we have given her, though.
I value the time I have got to spend with the cockatoos who visit us, and the trust entailed in their willingness to be that close to us.
But the developing relations between us are, I think, very different from what would be possible if they were captured, caged, and classified as 'pets'.
I won't even go into the problem of illegal bird capture, smuggling and sales; the 'legal' industry is problematic enough.
To the point where I think it is, in truth, unjustifiable.

    • @kenmasters5509
      @kenmasters5509 5 лет назад

And they all clip their feathers, so they can't fly.
You can see it on this bird too.
There is another one I know called "snowee" the cockatoo. Has clipped feathers too.
I for my self can't understand, how you want to "love" your pet, but at the same time, you take off them, what makes their being like in that case, flying as a bird.
If you as human, can't sleep or lay down, because of some illness for example, your muscles can't relax and you will get a total inner strain.
I'm sure it's the same for big birds if they have to stay in a house forever and not be able to fly like they wound in the jungle.
I'm sure it results in those outbrakes like shown in the video as well as crumbling everything down with their beak.
If you rly want to love such a bird, let it be in their natural habitat and let it freely fly their life's.
If you want to love them, then try to care about their real home, the rain forest.
Stop taking those birds out of their home.

*IMPORTANT WARNING FOR PET BIRD OWNERS* : The food that we normally give to the canaries (and other companion birds) consisting of a "complete, balanced and top-quality seeds mixture" bought in pet stores or malls, makes the owners trust that their pet is well fed, but it's not so: indeed the birds health is at imminent and serious risk.
The owners of canaries, parrots, cockatoos, budgies, cockatiels, etc., WE MUST PAY ATTENTION TO DOMESTIC BIRD BREEDERS AND VETS and keep in mind that although we feed them with such a typical seeds mixture, our birds are very likely in danger of suffering an unexpected, painful and practically inevitable PREMATURE DEATH BY FATTY LIVER DISEASE. Canaries, for example, will surely die at 4 - 7 years of age of the more than 14 that they can live.
It's sad that pet birds are fated to die early and painfully in so many cases. You have to warn people to avoid it!
This deadly disease is very common in pet birds but owners usually don’t know or detect it in time. And we can’t imagine that *THE CAUSE IS IN THE FOOD ITSELF* that we provide to our birds, in which such *a typical mixture contains low-fat seeds such as canary seed together with other VERY fatty seeds such as niger, hemp or nabine and, in addition, the birds usually prefer to eat the fatty seeds* so that their REAL DIET is unbalanced by excessive fat, gradually causes the fatty infiltration of the liver and in a few years causes fatty liver hepatitis and PREMATURE DEATH to pet birds.
*Also the breeding paste and its pigments and the sunflower seeds can attack the liver* if they are taken too much or for too long.
It's a cruel disease that progresses silently and, when its unexpected symptoms begin, they are easily confused with other ailments so the owners usually postpone the visit to the vet at a time already critical for the life of the bird (besides that not all vets are trained to recognize this elusive and misleading disease, even to administer lipotropic and regenerative liver protectors in curative doses, just in case it's that and not a supposed blow). It's a process of slow and asymptomatic progression, but when their visible symptoms begin (acute phase) the disease accelerates.
*SYMPTOMS OF THE ACUTE PHASE OF FATTY LIVER DISEASE* : First, emotional decay or progressive lack of interest, hard belly (in many cases, with a dark spot with a half-moon shape on the belly, which seems a "tumor", to see it you have to wet your fingers to remove the down), falls from the sticks of the cage that seem for "errors of calculation" and then lameness (that make believe that they are by the previous falls, but both symptoms are due to that it hurts the liver), lack of flight and singing, the bird fluffs up his feathers or bends more or less slowly; Then, within a few weeks or a few days, heavy breathing with open beak, remaining lying on the floor of the cage near the food, sudden spasms from time to time (which make people believe that the bird is "epileptic" but it are twinges of pain of diseased liver), abundant greenish stools (caused by biliverdin which if it's not fasting, it means hepatic harm), then black and watery (from hepatic hemorrhages), then a strange purplish color of skin and beak, an excessive appetite and the final "improvement" of a few days (in the last phase, the already degenerated liver becomes deflated by what the bird seems to ameliorate), after which it suddenly dies among seizures (which may seem a heart infarct).
For the first symptoms the liver has already degenerated to 80% and only an urgent (and accurate) vet action can save your bird and revert the liver situation. If you simply feed your bird with the loose seeds mixture (even if you give it fresh fruits, vegetables and let it exercise, for example by letting it out of the cage at home), right now your pet's liver is degenerating, and neither you nor your bird know. *Without liver protectors, it's almost certain that your bird will die early and in many cases you won’t be able to determine its real cause* .
Hepatic lipidosis it's not only deadly by itself when the visible symptoms begin (sometimes even it does not warn at all until few moments before the death). Even before the acute phase it predisposes the bird to suffer infections, as it weakens the immune system. Obese pet birds have an higher risk of many other diseases, like arthritis, heart disease and cancer. Obesity in birds it's not so apparent but it's more dangerous than in other animals like mammals.
So in addition to giving to the birds lipotropic and detox / regenerating hepatic protectors preventively and routinely, breeders usually make their own mixtures with low fat seeds.
*PREVENTION AND/OR TREATMENT* : The time to act is NOW that your bird doesn’t have yet the visible symptoms. It's necessary to ACTIVELY PREVENT THE LIVER DEGENERATION. Fortunately it's easy to do it: *It's very advisable to substitute progressively (within some weeks, as per the instructions of the manufacturer) the mixture of loose seeds for some pellets compound food of seeds, fruits and vegetables (preferably those that already include liver protectors), because this prevents the bird from filtering and eating mostly the fatty seeds (but without insisting if the bird does not get accustomed to eating pellets because he could die for starvation within a few days)* .
*And, whatever the diet, it's CRUCIAL to add to the drinking water or to the food a LIPOTROPIC LIVER PROTECTOR that includes carnitine and / or choline, betaine, methionine, etc., (and it's very convenient to add a DETOX / REGENERATING LIVER PROTECTOR with thistle milk, boldo, artichoke extract)* . Liver protectors are not medicine but cheap food supplements manufactured by pet bird vet laboratories that remove the fat from the liver, clean it and favor its recovery. It's essential to add them to the pet birds diet to conserve their liver. It's something that professionals as breeders and vets know, but we the owners usually don't know.
It are appearing in the market compound feed for pet birds that don’t include fatty seeds and that already include several liver protectors. *But the vast majority of owners still confidently feed their birds with the typical mixture of loose seeds with little fat and other very fatty seeds... And their birds continue dying for hepatic lipidosis in a large number of cases (likely, in most cases)* . Now we know that, as fatty liver disease develops from the daily food itself, it’s most likely THE FIRST CAUSE OF DEATH OF PET BIRDS, and more so as the bird ages.
    Webs on FLD:
    www.beautyofbirds.com/liverdisease.html
Liver disease is a slow, on-going progressive disease where the liver tissue is replaced with fat. When the liver disease has progressed, the bird may suddenly appear ill.
    www.lovinghands.com/forms/Hepatic%20Lipidosis%20-%20Fatty%20Liver%20Disease.pdf
One of the sadder diseases many avian vets see is that of hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver disease. It's sad in a number of ways since often the birds are very ill, life-threateningly so, or possibly having died suddenly. Often the owners have been unaware of the dangers of feeding their beloved pet the seeds, peanuts, or other fatty foods the bird obviously loves to eat. These are truly cases of "loving your bird to death". Any bird can fall victim to fatty liver disease.
    www.researchgate.net/publication/46105643_Treating_liver_disease_in_the_avian_patient
Dietary deficiencies of lipotrophic factors such as choline, biotin, and methionine may decrease the transport of lipids from the liver.
    www.veterinaria.org/revistas/redvet/n111110B/111004B.pdf
The clinical manifestations of hepatic diseases in ornamental birds are much more frequent than people could imagine and in many cases they are not appreciated, progress in a silent way and when they are evident, vet action may (usually) arrive late.
Most any avian symptomatology should be considered as if it was a pathology that could be serious, and not allow the disease to develop because then it will probably be too late. We must closely investigate the symptoms, take preventive measures that don’t harm (such as giving liver and intestinal protectors according to the leaflet) ask for advice from vets, breeders, etc. and procure the most appropriate treatment RAPIDLY, but without rushing in the treatment or with the doses in such small animals. If the days go by and the bird doesn’t improve, it's necessary to continue investigating and, if necessary, change the medication in an informed and contrasted manner. Doing nothing or stopping research usually ends up with the bird dead, but acting without being sure of what is done and in what dose, it likely ends the same way. It's necessary to obtain and confirm the sufficient vet experience and have the serenity to determine in each case whether it's convenient to hasten to do and / or administer what medicine and in what dose, or if it’s better not to do and let the situation evolve without medicating for the time being, or according to the medication that has already been administered.
A limp in a bird is not always an injury caused by a blow, but the symptom of a disease of some organ (usually the liver or an intestinal disease) that needs to be discovered and treated ASAP. When in doubt, change diet to one with the lowest fat possible (only birdseed, or with other low-fat seeds such as millet, chia, fresh fruits and vegetables) and administer lipotropic and regenerating liver protectors in curative doses immediately... although nothing could foresee a fatal outcome. There are also food supplements protectors of the intestinal mucosa and stimulants of the immune system. In doses according to the leaflets do not cause damage, it will surely save the life of your bird (if it's not too late), and will keep them with a basic wellness.
