Wonderful movie. Joseph Lowery looks like a handsome, tall version of Joseph Pegney. Nice natural actor. Nice, natural romance, and wasn't it a surprise that the lady saved her love not visa versa per usual?

This was released in 1944, so presumably it was made in 1943. That's the middle of WWII. German U-Boats were sinking ships in the Gulf of Mexico then. Boats travelled in convoys without lights, except for signals. No sign of any of this in the film, or why a healthy young man with no obvious ties isn't in military service. Unless the date of this movie is wrong this seems weird, as the audience must have been aware of all this.

They usually said the action took place in 1938 before the war.

He could have had a medical deferral like high blood pressure or flat feet or vision problems; color blind, less than 20/20 sight. He could have been the sole support for his mother or parental family and dependent siblings. In the beginning of the war, they did not take married men with children or pregnant wives. He could have had a critical job like farm or dairy farm owner. There could have been psychological reasons like depression, or drug or alcohol addiction. Or, being an entertainer, he might have served by traveling and entertaining the troops for morale purposes, or was used for select espionage work for his acting abilities. There could be any number of reasons he wasn't active duty. Maybe he was considered too old at the time; the military only wanted kids who wouldn't question anything they were being asked to do, or know the consequences thereof; like being shot dead or ripped to shreds by land mines, etc. The military was a source of jobs for post 1920's, economic depression. A lot of boys volunteered just to get a steady paycheck so they could get married and be able to afford a house. Who knows why he wasn't active duty.

@@Brembelia He could have been a conscientious objector. Whatever. The actor Robert Lowery wasn’t in the service, after all. The thing is it was not explained. In fact there is no mention of the war at all. I just assumed it was another “It happened in 1938” movie 🎥. By the way, later in the war they took people who wore glasses 🤓 or had other minor physical defects and put them on limited duty to release the healthy men for combat. Some wound up fighting anyway.

@@John-jl9de No argument there. I was in the army. But you don’t have to be in perfect fighting shape to do it. That’s why they took people later in the war who would have been 4F earlier. They did that stuff, mostly stateside or far from the front. It released more “healthy” men for combat, which a lot of healthy men didn’t like.

John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Jesus Christ loves you more than you know and is worth everything you are afraid of losing. If you will ask Jesus Christ with a genuine heart to please forgive all your sins, and come into your heart and please save you, he will save you and you will soon know how real he is, and you will have eternal life. God bless.
