Claudette Colbert was a true star! Never a bad movie. She had a unique quality, maybe it was the voice that made her so mesmerizing, as her overall look and style never changed. She was old Hollywood at it's best. Born to be on the Silver Screen.
I was thinking in one of the scenes with her unconscious how truly beautiful she was. What a complexion. Amazing in some ways when you consider the limited selections in lighting effects back then. Kudos to those responsible for this type of effect.

Look at some old T.V. footage of major league baseball games from the 40's & 50's and probably into the 60's. Not so today....civility is non-existent in so many places. Sad...real sad.
Oh la. How my sisters and I dressed up for flights! Plus a menu: steak or chicken. In porcelain plates. With real cutlery. And a hot towel before and after. In COACH.
I agree and I say it all the time. My daily dressing would be pointed directly at WW2 era and when I go out everyday to Walmart, Aldi's, corner store ...anywhere I am always dressed . In other words, I look as if I walked out of the 1940s daily and folks look surprised. Folks give comments like "are you going to church, you look so dressed up?". I tell them, this is how I dress everyday. Folks now of days wanna be in pajamas all day some. And if they dress , they consider that work clothes or "dressing up". I am 37 and I can't fathom just walking out with pajamas.

Well, it IS a different world in way too many respects and it’s definitely NOT all to the good. Generally speaking people owned much less clothing than many do today. The fact that people consider today’s styles for traveling much more comfortable they are frankly utterly without what then would have been referred to as anything that could qualify as ‘stylish’. Unless of course one is wealthy. Not only have we discarded style, we have become boorish and rude in our public behavior because too many feel entitled to do so. In their minds personal ‘freedom’ allows them to be whatever they chose to be in ANY setting. I think when Rosalind Russell commented at the point in her life where she had observed that humanity was losing it’s sensibility, generally speaking, and that ‘grace’ would disappear she was sadly visionary. What have we ‘allowed’ ourselves to become?
First of all, people in the industrial world are fatter than people right after WWII, so those clothes would not look good on them even if they tried, and would indeed be less comfy. I never wore high heels for instance. And then there's the amount of people: people are generally unhappy because of all the noise, the dirt and the trouble in the world. @@michaelward9880 Burr was never a big star in any area. He was only a mediocre actor. Very dead pan in every role. Noir was only used in the first of a double bill, to fill space before the real movie that everyone really went to see, and most noirs were crap. The only ones that survived were the very best ones, and they are still nowhere near as good. Their budgets were always low, so everything about them was second class, including some of the acting. That's what distinguished A and B movies. Some crime movies that are really noirs are being called noir now. But noirs were always B+W and did not often have the biggest stars like Claudette Colbert and this male star that plays her husband. For that reason I would not class this as a noir, but rather as a mystery film. There were many very good actors who never managed to reach the A list, or reached it later. A lot of people who had very small roles were actually excellent actors, but they were not highly paid or treated well. And inexplicably there were some terrible actors who did make it to the A list status. (There was no actual official list. That's just a euphemism.) Most actors were type cast and only ever played 1 kind of role. To some extent that still happens unless the actor really works at finding roles with a difference, like Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt have done. But with that, there are inevitably some of their projects that are deemed to be "flops". Burr was lucky, he was able to work a lot because cops and villains were ubiquitous in the crime films that made up the first films in the double bills that every theatre used. It was sort of a "2 for the price of 1" thing. So he worked a lot, and even had 2 long running tv shows that gave him a lot of exposure. He even got a chance on those tv shows to stretch a little bit more, but that still doesn't make him a big star. (In 1 he was a lawyer, and in the other he was a wheelchair bound detective.) Edit: I checked Wikipedia, and I have to modify my opinion. He won a fair number of Emmys and Golden Globes, and had a LOT of nominations for a great many more. His 2 main TV shows were both almost 10 years long, and he was in a LOT of stage plays, noirs, and TV movies. He worked very steadily for his whole life until his death. He was also considered extremely kind and generous by everyone who ever knew him, and he donated TONS of time and money to many good causes. So I can see why some people would consider him a big star, and after all, there is no hard line between who is a star and a big star, so it's a matter of opinion. IMHO, he's still not a big star, because of the type of rut he was cast in, and the resulting lack of breadth and depth of his roles. And because of the lack of recognition of him now. However as I said, whether or not somebody is a "big" star is a matter of opinion. I concede he was a star. But a "big" one? I guess we all have to decide that for ourselves. My opinion of him as a person is very much uplifted by the Wikipedia article! I like him a lot now as a person. And I encourage people to go and read it. It certainly was an eye opener, and my respect for Burr has grown a lot.
I don't know what it is that makes this movie so enjoyable. The characters and dialogue are compelling and the costumes and scenery are wonderful as well. I didn't expect to enjoy this so much. Everyone is comparing it unfavorable to Gaslight but this one is actually more entertaining.
I thought so too….great variety of eccentric characters…loved the subtle unexpected humor woven through. This is one I will be watching often . These old black and whites are so good for insomniacs
What an outstanding movie! The acting is also great, as well as the costumes and the story. Thanks for uploading this movie and thanks for the good quality! Also, all three main actors are quite suitable for such roles. Watching Miss Brooks in the role of the lover was a pleasure. Three words to describe the movie - creative, exciting and dramatic. For the fans who enjoy such films, I would recommend 'The Lost Moment' (1947)!
Great nail-biter! I always liked Bob Cummings. Seemed like such a gentleman.....good actor, too! I especially loved him in the famous Hitchcock thriller, “Dial “M” For Murder”. I just happened to stumble upon this, but THIS FILM IS WELL WORTH WATCHING! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼♥️🙋♀️
Definitely, this film is great. Some years ago, being Douglas Sirk such a great director, I bought it on Dvd but this Video looks much better than my old DVD. Thanks so much for uploading this classic 🎉
I am really happy 😊😊😁😁 you commented on the excellent film quality which this time, I failed to mention at all, this actually proves if the picture quality is good enough, black and white can look as great as any color film ☺️☺️🎥🎥 !!

Great movie, masterfully planned and acted out. Never ceases to amaze me how some men loose their heads and lives over some youthful, makeup, tricked out young strumpet. When they already have the best
Raymond Burr sometimes known for playing a heavy but turned out to be a fine lawyer as Perry Mason. I always remember him as the white haired killer in Rear Window.
Claudette Colbert was my grandmother's favorite actress and mine too !! 😃😃 Small wonder !! She was a great 👍👍 actress and fabulous to look at. Other actresses seem to get more attention, but Claudette could play any part !! 43:12
Gr8 movie. Nice to see Cummings n serious role. Remember him n his comedy show wher he was a photographer. Colbert rarely disappoints. Love these mystery thrillers.
Allison, oh Alllison, ooohhhh Allison. Good movie, don't make them like this anymore. A few minutes in and don't miss color at all. Black and white is part of the charm of these films. I'm going to get some more popcorn and watch this again.
Claudette Colbert only made black and white films because she photographed so well in them and - she felt - poorly in colour . After she made Parrish in colour she retired. She appeared in only more production - on TV - over 25 years later.
I far prefer color. No exceptions. The people who claim B+W is better are just pretentious. Color does so much more to give the picture detail, texture, and depth. In 1 word, reality. B+W always looks flat as a pancake and it lacks so much! That's why B+W is rarely ever used now.

Doctors endorsed them, that should tell you something. Additional though they added more than tobacco in cigs, hundreds of other chemical ingredients which were never disclosed until the late 1980s- 1990s

Very "Gaslight"-ish! Never saw this one before; pretty good. George Coulouris looks like he gained a significant amount of weight in the seven years between his debut as the humorless banker Thatcher in Orson Welles's first film "Citizen Kane" and playing the sinister quack doctor in this movie.

Better yet, if you watch some of the older movies from the 1920's, even most of the child actors featured there have died!!!😮😢😪
@@StanZ-i6w That must be hard. My heart goes out to you. I'm 63, so very soon I will be in that boat too. It saddens me greatly when I know that someone that I care about has left the world, even if I didn't know them in person, because they did have a big effect on me. Of course the loss of my best friend 10 years ago affected me the most, and the loss of my dad, and my youngest cousin, but certain actors and singers have a huge impact too, and when certain ones go, it feels like the world has changed, and it has. I think I first felt that when Elvis died. I was surpised by it! I was around 16, and I had not even been a big fan, but I had just recently discovered a few songs by him that I really liked. In The Ghetto, Suspicious Minds. I forget what else. That was almost 50 years ago. But I did feel a sense of loss for the very first time, so when John Denver died, John Lennon, Princess Diana, and when certain bands stopped playing due to a death, like Led Zeppelin, or certain actors, it does hurt to know that never again will your life be enlightened by their creative gifts, in whatever way it was expressed. I have very little family, and we have never been close, so those losses feel bigger too. Fortunately the few other very close friends I have are all still alive. But I know that when they go, even if I haven't seen them in decades when it happens, it will hurt like crazy, just to know they are not in the world anymore. I wish you all the best, and I hope you remain as healthy and happy as possible. My heart truly goes out to you. ❤❤❤

Love Raymond Burr &Bob Cummings too So many stars and I’ve never heard of or seen this before🌟🌟🌟
Wow, a lot of great stars. I love these Film Noir Thrillers. Thank you for sharing.
Claudette Colbert, Robert Cummings and Don Ameche. Great picture. ❤
You forgot to mention Raymond Burr.
@@michaelward9880 IMHO, Raymond Burr is not as big a star as Claudette Colbert, Robert Cummings and Don Ameche were.
@@sheristewart3940 That's your opinion. Burr was a big star, especially in film noir.
@@michaelward9880 I did write, "IMHO (in my humble opinion)!"
(In 1 he was a lawyer, and in the other he was a wheelchair bound detective.)
Edit: I checked Wikipedia, and I have to modify my opinion.
Excellent little thriller, predictable plot, but well worth the watch.. loved it
What an outstanding movie!
Always great to see Keye Luke, big fan.
What a star packed cast. Terrific.
1948 Claudette Colbert, Don Ameche, Robert Cummings, Raymond Burr
Yes the absolute best of the best!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Love these, Robert Cummings to the rescue
Love the old black and white movies 🎬 thanks
I love ❤️ them. I remember watching them with my Mom on the weekends. Grateful for those memories. Nothing like old Black and White movies 🎥
Raymond Burr, I always enjoy him in films, and Perry Mason is still the only “lawyer” show I’ll watch.
"I now pronounce you husband and wife" from a back-in-the-day movie. Wonderful!
This was very well done. Thank you
I love the old movies especially the wealthy people, and all their beautiful gowns they wear, and the servants and maids. Love CC she was so beautiful and a natural actress. That was Jimmy from Mickey Mouse Club!...lol
Gr8 movie. Thoroughly enjoyable. First flick saw Amici as the villain.
Good movie, well worth watching, glad I found it
Good movie. I dont know these actors as this is an old movie, but her friend's brother (Robert Cummings) is very attractive and charming.
Claudette Colbert is a well known name!! Especially in older movies from the 30s and 40s.
This is redone gaslight but very very well done. I enjoyed it very much.
Wow a splendid movie
Thanks for showing it on you tube ...I'm soo lucky to watch this
This thriller amuses me
Wealthy women r always a prey in all ages
But nothing like earning our salaries after a month's hardwork....god always protects us n helps us to be prosperous...Rich girl ..she owns that swanky hse...n they r after her 🎉🎉❤
this is a great example of remembered film noir....and "love that bob"...LOL thanks for posting!!
Better start making copies of these movies before they take them away.
Great movie, masterfully planned and acted out. Never ceases to amaze me how some men loose their heads and lives over some youthful, makeup, tricked out young strumpet. When they already have the best
lose
@@lisainger6751Do you feel better now honey?
Raymond Burr sometimes known for playing a heavy but turned out to be a fine lawyer as Perry Mason. I always remember him as the white haired killer in Rear Window.
He almost was unrecognizable in 'Rear Window'.
Ironsides.♿
Me too. Loved that movie
Oh, he certainly is that
: Love how there's no beginning or ending acting credits, cut straight to the movie ❤❤❤. Thank you 🎉.
Wow what a beginning! I am still watching ! I love it already ! Thanks for sharing.
And then the story collapsed like a bad soufflé...
The costumes are amazing, truly the age of glamour, I wonder what they would look like in colour.
Claudette Colbert is so beautiful
Claudette Colbert was my grandmother's favorite actress and mine too !! 😃😃 Small wonder !! She was a great 👍👍 actress and fabulous to look at. Other actresses seem to get more attention, but Claudette could play any part !! 43:12
Her & Bette Davis older movies. NOW VOYGER. LOVED THIS MOVIE
Gr8 movie. Nice to see Cummings n serious role. Remember him n his comedy show wher he was a photographer. Colbert rarely disappoints. Love these mystery thrillers.
That show was called "Love That Bob!"
And Perry Mason..my moms heart throb. He looked a little like my dad.
What ever you do…don’t tell he preferred cock
I ENJOYED this Movie 🍿 The main Actress was so Tiny and Beautiful this was a Really Good Movie and I think Black & White
Makes it even better…..
Thank You Watching from Virginia 🌹
Colbert is just terrific--TY
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a treat to watch. Great acting.
This was very good just love these old films…didn’t care for the rather abrupt ending after so many twists and turns throughout the rest of the film….but overall, really enjoyed it….thank you for sharing….
Good one! Thanks so much -- Liked and Subscribed.
Don Ameche was a very handsome man back in his day.
Him and Cher were great together at the 86 Oscars
He had such a suave voice and manner too. I suspect he was just as human, dumb, and clumsy as all men, but it is very attractive.
Love CC...the cast was brilliant!!! Great 🎬 movie, thank you for showing it.
Don Ameche looks VERY guilty already!!!
Yes, he almost exuded “gaslighting” right from the start.
Very good thriller noir. Thank you for posting this video 😊!
Very well done. Thank you so much. Please make as many as you can. I really love these. Of course I’m not doing any housework I can’t take it but I enjoy these so much you’re doing a fabulous job Debra Bader.
Excellent movie! Reminded me of Gaslight but more psychologically bearable. I’ve never been able to finish Gaslight.
It has such a great ending! Best part of the movie...dénouement and all.
Oh you must finish watching it.....what I find interesting that back then....spouses actually went to some trouble to dispose of a spouse (and DNA forensics had not been discovered).....these days they just seem to brutally murder and expect to get away with it. Has the IQ of the human race deteriorated? 😂😂
My ex husband gaslighted me, it wasn't a great film for me either..
I've seen Gaslight at least a dozen times. One of my favorite movies. You have to see how she gets back at him near the end. " are you suggesting this is a knife I hold in my hand? Are you mad my husband?" . Oooo I get the goosebumps just thinking about that scene!
@@carollund8251
Yes
How you get them is how you lose them
Love everything about this movie.
I have always fond of watching b&w movies theyre really awesome to watch thanks for uploading it ❤❤😮😅😊
I love these old classic movies, but I always thought it was strange that a husband n wife slept in different rooms!!!!
My dad told me food on the airplanes back than was Awesome, n you can smoke!!!!
Sooooo glad smoking is no longer allowed in planes....😊
@@FemiNelson-sb1emso glad smoking is not allowed in public places, any more!
@@soalegria1971 That's just the beginning. Wait till you see what else they have planned. I expect you'll happily go along with it all till you realise they've got you hook, line and sinker.

Raymond Burr, nine years before he became Perry Mason.
What a good movie!!!
Loved it! How can it be anything but good with cast it has.
People comment on the smoking in films of this age well they were told cigarettes were good for your health and chest indeed they were advised to smoke to get mucus off their chest all promoted by the tobacco industry of course so there u r
Doctors endorsed them, that should tell you something. Additional though
they added more than tobacco in cigs, hundreds of other chemical ingredients which were never disclosed until the late 1980s- 1990s
My Dr. Told me the tobacco companies have been spraying morphine on the leaves to make the city's more addictive...
Don't forget to focus on the fine furnishings too,guys!@naomivillalobos8031
It’s weird to me that anyone could think inhaling smoke into ur lungs was good for u. They must have known how pollution and smog caused serious illness even back then. The doctors knew, they must have been paid off.
Do U have 1 of these fine furniture details? F eBay
Thanks is a classic and is a pleasure to watch it.
That was a good one thanks ❤❤❤❤❤
Claudette Colbert is so good!
This is like Midnight Lace with Doris Day.
Thank s loved this ❤️ movie 🎬 appreciate so much 👍 great
Good movie and thanks...but it's really annoying to have the ads for the next movies in the queue popping up and covering the very ending !! Not sure if it's your channel doing it or youtube...
Yes, it seems to be a prevalent disease these days. MOST annoying! Otherwise a smashing movie1
Loved this movie. Quite an exciting ending!
Great movie, it opened my eyes up to gas lighting..
Wow what a smashing house right by that big river with all the boats going up and down
I had a very unique house on the Missouri river in the country years ago. It was my joy.
Oh wow i feel rather honoured - And best kind wished from Scotland@@sookie4195
Very "Gaslight"-ish! Never saw this one before; pretty good. George Coulouris looks like he gained a significant amount of weight in the seven years between his debut as the humorless banker Thatcher in Orson Welles's first film "Citizen Kane" and playing the sinister quack doctor in this movie.
Anyone remember Don Ameche and Francis Langford doing recordings of The Bickersons, about a constantly quarrelling couple? Very funny.
Wow, thats a YOUNG Raymond Burr! Even before Perry Mason.
A friend of mine called Imitation of Life his all time favorite film. Then suddenly i was in a Claudette rabbit hole 😂
. *THE HUSBAND DOEN'T NEED TO USE HYPNOTICS. THE WIFE IS IN CONSTANT DENIAL, EVEN WITHOUT THEM. SHE IS HER OWN WORST ENEMY !!!*
.
. *I WOULD GET DAMNED TIRED OF TRYING TO HELP SOMEONE LIKE HER.*
When your made to doubt yourself that will happen. But the husband took advantage of that, instead of helping her.
O the fashion is fab and really good scripts
Creepy doctor..creepy husband..creepy friends
Creepy film.
A version of GASLIGHT!
It is strange to think that almost nobody who was an adult in those days is still alive.
Very sad. All of our old stars are either retired, no parts, or are ready to die. Hollywood just isn't what it used to be.
Wait till you reach my age, and almost all the actors and actresses and singers and other entertainers you grew up with will be dead! Even everyone in my family has died , my parents and brother and sister, and I am now an orphan!
