      @barbarajames9707 2 года назад +2

      Absolutely right. Never engage if they reach out to you first. This almost happened to me with Pacific Gas and Electric company. I recognized the number as a customer contact number. The scammer told me I was behind on my electric bill and I had 30 minutes to pay $399.00 or it wll be shut off. I was struggling with payments at the time and had set up a payment plan. I panicked and was about to give him my credit card number, but I remembered about the payment plan and told the scammer I had to check my account to see what went wrong. He said something about a new account system and a old account system not recognizing each other and I need to pay right away. Luckily, I insisted on checking my account and called the company who told me they never contacted me and everything was fine. And they would have reached out to me with letters and warnings before taking action.

      @@lea862b6 The first one, I’d say, is Wells Fargo’s failure to make it known to the average person that Zelle is NOT a part of Well Fargo. It is a 3rd party entity. The fact that Zelle is accessed through the Well Fargo Mobile Banking App leads one to believe that it’s part of Wells Fargo. That lack of clarity makes the security oversight dangerous. In nothing I’ve read (I use Zelle and bank with Wells Fargo) that says someone else can set up a Zelle account in my name, under my phone number but another bank account. Again, thinking this is a Well Fargo App, a customer has no reason to believe another person’s bank account would be linked to their name and phone number. Lastly, I don’t see how Wells Fargo and/or Zelle wouldn’t have patched vulnerability if they saw it.

Don't cast blame when you don't read the warnings. Patched vulnerability, these are two separate companies. You are sending money through zelle, wells fargo is just where the moneys being held. Even if you did read terms and agreements, all of them say they’re subject to change without notice. That clause renders the one you’re reading virtually useless. But, that’s a separate issue. While I understand what you are saying, we can’t ignore the “reasonable person standard”. That standard isn’t as high as you might think which is why most companies have built in redundancies. In this case they failed to do that.

    None of this would be needed if there was an automatic 3 day hold on any Zelle transfer giving time for the customer and banks to reverse it if was authorized by deceit. The banks just don't want the added hassle of this refereeing and recordkeeping and so they just pass on the burden of loss on to the customer. Right now transferred funds are available for with drawl immediately and that's the problem. One could also limit this hold to large transfers to decrease the administrative burden much like banks will place a hold on deposited checks beyond a certain value. This would, at least, limit the magnitude of any financial losses.

    process anything until I contact them for approval. They said scams are becoming more frequent.

    Some scams are also happening with hospital bills. I received a bill for a procedure I had. It had the procedure name dr, and date. No deductible and I had just paid my deductible for this. I called the oficial hospital number, and they verified that my account was settled. I googled address and phone on bill and nothing comes up.
