Cheers to New Zealand! You are so knowledgeable on this wonderful old technology!
Would you have a minute to help me on my diagnosis? I am trying to fix my mothers 185 4 Runner 1996 Automatic 3.4 V6.
Only 100.000 km in pristine condition and absolute hassle free for the last 10 years… one of the best cars out there you might agree!
We had the 4x4 symbol in the dashboard blinking for a while… so today I grabbed my multimeter to measure out the components…
The 4x4 pushbutton works, open loop and closed loop. The J-Lever position sensors work. The brown and blue ADD VSV in the engine bay work upon applying 12V to the pins ( each opens and delivers good vacuum to the font diff)
The two transfercase position sensor work (open and closed loop when pushing on them)
The electric motor of the transfer case works when supplying 12v to the pins back and forth… (I was most happy about that)
    Now here is my question:
The plug running to the electric motor ( 5 pin ( 3 wires for the position contact spool and two big wires for the voltage to the motor))
doesn’t supply any voltage no matter what position I put the J Gear selector or the 4x4 button.
Similar are the two plugs to the VSV Valves for the front, they send 12Volts each and do not modulate the Voltage between the brown and blue Valve,
No matter what I switch on the gear selector.
I spent a few days in forums and on RUclips to gather knowledge on the system.
I now suspect a faulty ECU or a relay that might be the issue.
My mom is on an island with lots of corrosion issues due to salty moist air which might contribute…
Am I on the right track?
Your words would be highly appreciated!
    Thanks, Christian!

There is a slight noise at idle when warm and from my research it seems that it's coming from the wave washer between the scissor gears. Only function is to preload scissor gears at idle. When I press the 4wd button on the gear stick the 4wd light turns on straight away but when I press again it wont turn off. I've a done a test: jacked up the vehicle, 4 wheels of the ground, 4wd switch off, 4wd light off, auto gear box on D (drive), both rear wheels + front right wheel were spinning. How does your transfer case engage 4x4? Maybe someone has changed the tranfer case to one without the engagement motor.

HELP !!!! Can someone point me in the right direction in resolving my 98 4Runner issue? When I engage 4H it goes in silent but when it goes back to 2H (disengage) there is a loud bang (like a sled hammer bang). The is a delay for about 30 second to disengage as I drive down the road below 25mph. The 4wd light indicator goes on when I press the button and it goes off when I depress the button, the light never blinks. Can anyone help me troubleshoot what to look at to solve the hard disengagement of the 4WD?

Have you serviced the actuator unit? Changed the transfer oil? Checked anything else?

Hi mate do you have available actuator motor exactly the same on your vedio

    • @CartuneNZ
      @CartuneNZ  4 года назад +1

I do however only as part of complete gearbox packages. As mechanics have been throwing them out over the years they are a bit harder to find these days.
