My grandfather was almost hung a year after coming home from WW2, after going to a funeral for a fellow black soldier in uniform. My grandmother told him that they either had to leave MISSISSIPPI or he would be killed. (My grandfather was 6"4' very dark skinned and said what he wanted. ) So...Detroit became home.

I'm from Florida, and I've been racially profiled by the same state trooper and pulled over TWICE in two different counties by this man. He deliberately pulls over Black people driving nice vehicles because I know of others who have been pulled by him.
The second time he pulled me, he claimed I was going 89 mph on the interstate, but only issued a warning. He knew I knew he was lying because I was staring at my radar detector the entire time (which never went off, so he wasn't even spraying radar).
Whenever I'm pulled over, my hands go straight into the air. I don't move unless asking beforehand and receiving permission. This man had the nerve to ask me in a condescending tone why I had my hands up. "It's a precautionary measure," was my response. I'm a Black woman in America, and while our cases do not get as much attention, we are still killed at a high rate by police officers.

I've never been pulled over before and I hope it never happens. Im so sorry you went through that. I live in FL too and the lengths I go to make sure I don't get pulled over and be a good driver and make sure my paperwork is good is tiring. I know that's what we are all supposed to do but it's always a point of worry for me. Our mistakes seems to cost our lives.

End qualified immunity for law enforcement officials. If self restraint won't stop their murderous behaviors, then how about knowing they have "no personal protection" from being charged, jailed and sued by the injured parties of their "routine traffic stops".

If you get pulled over, you Better not flash any military ID unless you're sure you'll outrank the officers....which was still ill-adviced because then it became a rank match (this is just for whytes.... She said to the cop, he's a good kid and ran down a list of how good he is. I was pissed because it didn't matter if the kid was "good" or not and goes to a "good" school. Calvin thanks for sharing another great commentary. Someone tried to tell me that there isn't racism in the military and that those of color are treated well. I gave a few examples, and I told the person that I won't be gaslit, and I kept it moving because it's pointless to argue the truth/facts to a fool that wants to uphold a lie. I have personally experienced racist people and anti-black attitudes also exist in Christianity, academia, and professional workplaces. Although nothing is new under the sun, I am still shocked when I find myself in situations where it is obvious that my race is playing a key role in why I'm being mistreated or abused. I'm not going to lie, some experiences have eroded my trust and I am more guarded... It also is a punch to the gut when other people of color are actively assisting those that sex to oppress.
I think the government should create a national database (like they do for criminals and sex offenders) where fired police officers (those that used excessive or deadly force) are registered and they won't be permitted to apply for law enforcement jobs at any other location. And upon investigation, if they should have been fired but instead they were permitted to quit/resign that police department should either lose funding and/or have some other penalty or sanction.

    Great show Calvin (as always)
Interesting to learn the context of the experiences of African Americans in the military post conflict. In regards to African American soldiers in Europe during WW1, I remember reading The Unknown Soldiers: African-American Troops in World War I by Arthur E. Barbea, which enlightened me to their experiences. Some of your audience may have thought that it was Europeans 1st experience of Africans but I would like to stress that colonialism in Africa had resulted in Africans and African-Caribbean’s fighting on the side of the British, French and Germans in Europe. But I do feel that the influence of the ‘Jazz Age’ did influence how African Americans were viewed (particularly by European women).
On another note, just to enlighten you and your audience about the experiences of Black people in two countries that has a direct effect on me. In Australia, there have been 5 deaths in custody in April of indigenous peoples. That brings the total number to 475 since 1991, quiet shocking for a group who are only 3% of Australia’s population (due to genocide and policies designed to ethnically cleanse them). In the UK, the government recently published a report in which it claimed there was no Institutional Racism in the UK and slavery should be seen in a different context (see quote). “There is a new story about the Caribbean experience which speaks to the slave period not only being about profit and suffering but how culturally African people transformed themselves into a re-modeled African/Britain.”
Just saying that the shit is hard all over but knowledge about our collective experience is power. Look forward to your next post.

Currently serving and it is scary. You never know what is going to happen with these cops, I stay in Texas. The cops are out of control, and never held responsible...I seen the John Crawford video years ago..he was shot from behind to and the person who made that call lied on him and said he was threatening people in Walmart.

My brother, you're doing a great job. Please find time to do one that will enlighten our black brothers and sisters, including other ethnic minority who easily jump into their narrative as if they are not one of us who are hunted by these racist.

Did the other officer instigate the incident by radioing in that the man was evading so his partner showed up being extra crazy? If that’s true he should be fired too.

Calvin, I know you are not specifically into theory (I mean explaining theory here), rather focusing on historical analysis. However, I recently became acquainted with Afro-Pessimism as a theory focused on anti-black racism and how/why violence is expected in this white supremacist system and I'd love your perspective on it and how it would explain the constant murder of Africans in America (and worldwide but America is the epicentre it seems)....thanks and great discussion as usual.

There should be a separation of entities: A Police force and a Law enforcement. Law enforcement does patrols, and police force is deployed only for Violent situations. Similar to swat doesn't do patrols.
