For reference you fight this guy in a field of white flowers next to a burning church with the moon above. Each attack shoots petals into the air. Gunshots and blood with every hit. It’s amazing
To be exact its the hunter (you) coming to meet the original hunter (gherman) who was your guide to this point. Its a dream void that you are stuck in and the only way to get out is to let him kill you, he also wants to die but does not want to force you to kill him, while if you kill him you take his position until the next hunter comes
My favorite comment about this fight is: "No matter how the fight goes, the winner loses, and the loser wins." Such a powerful fight, and the music just elevates it.
In addition not only do winners lose and losers win but the goal for both participants is to lose because they cannot bear the thought of the other losing, it is so goddamn hearbreaking!
"Like a dream sequence but also looming death" how does he do it ladies and gentlemen? Every single time, how does he hit the nail perfectly on the head? Like the robin hood of guessing music
"Beware the old man in a profession where usually men die young" fits Gehrman the First Hunter perfectly. Also a common theme in Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring is that long-lasting happy outcomes are never heard of. Bittersweet victories at a great cost of life and sanity are much more commonplace. Gehrman's fate is no exception.
The song talks about the tragedy of gehrman the first hunter, he is forever cursed to be the eternal guardian of a place called the hunters dream, gehrman is trapped here for all eternity while one night every year a new hunter enters and leaves the dream, he cannot die, he cannot rest , when the night ends he kills the hunter who ended in trapped each night so they can wake up and leave the dream , while gehrman stays, the lyrics in Latin say translated “ oh good hunter, let me free you from this evil, I I will devote my life to maintain this dream, insidious moon, the misterious nights, oh great ones( or oh gods) look upon me and grant me everlasting mercy” this is an amazing piece and my favourite videogame ost in all time , it’s a tragedy because gehrman saves people from ended up by him and that’s what he’s done for years, but this time you are the one who kills him, finally liberating his soul
@@tchoythao1730 not quite "a victim". Gehrman and the first hunters committed unspeakable atrocities, and he's trapped in the dream partially out of guilt. In Bloodborne there are only monsters.
Haha this is THE Final Boss song~ He's not the "True Final Boss" but yeah. Most From Software games have very minimal "Location Music", typically saved for either the "Main Hub" or unique places. This song I like to believe it was trying to evoke a "Sad final battle" like Dark Souls 1 Final Boss theme.
I don't know if you're ever going to play these games, so I'll just say that this plays at one of the most iconic moments from the souls franchise (The setting and context it's a bit similar to The Boss fight from MGS3). I'll be waiting for your reaction to the Main menu theme from Dark Souls 3, that's another huge banger.
"What was it," you ask me? It was neither the Hunt, nor the Blood, nor the Dream. It was the insight... the insight that you've sacrificed yourself and suffered for so very, very long for the sake of everyone else... But I can take it, Old Hunter. I am still young compared to you. My heart and mind are unburdened compared to yours. And when the time comes and I, too, am driven to despair by this horrible, wonderful dream, I will look for a successor to take my place... But for now, I know we must dance. Because I know that even though you long for release, and even though I am willing to sacrifice myself for your sake, you cannot allow me to take your place and suffer your torment... So come, Old Hunter. I invite you to dance this last waltz with me... and then, sleep... sleep, unburdened by dreams and nightmares... free of torments, free of sins, free of suffering, free of cretins, free of sorrows, and free of tomorrows, free like the sparrows, leaving their shadows...
I didn’t think I would ever be into souls games. I bought bloodborne a few years ago on a whim when it was on sale for 8$. Like many people new to the series, I didn’t exactly enjoy or understand it at first, but something kept drawing me back to it. I would eventually come to love the mechanics and the challenges, but I think what it was initially that hooked me was the atmosphere and the music. Now souls is one of my favorite series and I’m so glad I stuck with it. Bloodborne is my still my favorite!
@@Gakusangi all that said, I agree with you. I would like to like to see a bloodborne 2, but honestly still have so much fun each time I replay 1. I really love Elden Ring as well
@@Kitth3n I love Dark Souls 1, Demon's Souls (PS3), Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring. Dark Souls II is a bit of a mess, but I did find some enjoyment in it here and there. I love that some of the good ideas from Dark Souls II made it into the other games. I wish Bonfire Ascetics was one of those things. Sekiro just didn't 'click' with me like I'd wanted. I don't think it's poorly made, I just think it's not a game for me. I'm a bigger Tenchu fan. Elden Ring is a great sandbox for me to play in and come up with new build ideas for.
I forget what video it was said on, but I saw someone describe this song as "the theme of 2 people, each trying to sacrifice themself for the other." Gehrman, the first hunter and last/second to last boss depending on ending is a man who has been there for the entire game, and at the end offers you a choice: wake up and forget everything that has happened on the night of the hunt and move on with your life leaving him where he is, or live eternally within the dream turned nightmare he is stuck in, freeing him in the process.
This plays for the final boss, and its a very tragic song. Basically, the boss you fight is a pseudo-mentor to you cursed with eternally serving this eldrich God, and you are finally putting him to rest. Think of the song as a dirge, as you are finally putting this tormented soul to rest. It's someone that you are supposed to feel hesitant to kill, but the more hopeful notes of the piece sort of symbolize the bosses desire to rest. The arena is a beautiful field of white flowers, in this dreamlike space. Literally, since it IS called the hunters dream. When you mentioned it sounds like a dream, or a death, there ya go. It's both. Of all the souls games, I love bloodborne's soundtrack the most. There is SOO much meaning in every piece, every note is deliberate. And it has this haunting cosmic horror vibe games have struggled to recreate sense. While there's debate over which souls game is the best, most would probably agree that the "vibes" of bloodborne are the most enrapturing. Finally, I've mentioned this before, but I think you would really REALLY like the souls games. It has a heavy focus on gameplay, so there is a decent overlap with fighting game fans.
Cosmic horror is definitely something I feel mainstream media hasn't been able to convey properly, at least from the things I've seen/played. Until I played this game. It's really easy to see why there are people who aren't even full soulsborne fans but consider this game as one of their favorites of all time. You just don't get that same experience anywhere else. Closest thing we got in Elden Ring was Astel, but I still desperately need Bloodborne 2 or a spiritual successor ugh
Ah, I have hunted. I did it all to cleanse my soul from evil. An insidious hunt. The wonderful darkness/These mysterious nights This way I knew eternal mercy/Eternal misery. Let the evil be hidden (from you) My life devoted to sustaining the Dream The insidious Moon The wonderful darkness/ These mysterious nights Great One, look upon me and grant eternal mercy (or "Great One has looked upon me and grant this eternal misery"). Since I provided lyrics when I requested Ludwig here's translated lyrics for this one too! I just love how they wrote relevant lyrics to the best of their abilities as composers who don't speak the language. The lyrics aren't provided anywhere in game it's generally people just listening carefully and latin speakers doing gods works lol. The song lyrics usually is used as a way to tell a story about the boss.
Blood borne is actually notable for its lack of music. Due to this, themes like this and Maria’s hit incredibly hard when you’re not used to hearing anything other than the wind and gunfire
I am very new to Fromsoft gsmes. Started with Elden Ring, and now just recently finished Bloodborne. As a string player I have made a habit of listening to scores and as such I listened to this before completing the story. This theme can go over your head because of how subdued it is in comparison to the rest of the boss themes. Very pared down to mostly string section that will reach its climax to that choral section that gave that extra emotional kick to it. Now once you get to this penultimate final decison in game and go back to this theme afterwards, it will hit different. From what I have gathered of Soulsborne games, endgame bosses often has this theme of fighting warriors who are mere shadows of their former selves, who are way past their prime, and Gehrman is a great example of this. The theme really gives that gravitas to the end of his, and your journey.
Dear, oh dear. What was it? The hunt? The blood? Or the horrible dream. Oh- it doesn’t matter. It always comes down to hunters helpers to clean up after these sorts of messes. Tonight Gherman joins the hunt…
It's because the lore, the narrative and the whole world building of fromsoft games are so elaborated and well taken care of, that you can feel, and almost kind of grasp the stories through the music itself, the music is that unseen narrator that fromsoft implements in their games, because the story telling method they use, is FAR from straight forward, every piece is important, from the details in the level design, the environments, the SUPER INFRECUENT cutscenes, the item descriptions in your inventory, and of course; the music/boss themes, I know it's highly unlikely, but I do hope that sometime in the future, you could give this game, at least this one, a fair try, it's also not THAT long, like a JRPG could be for example, so hopefully that helps you making the decision, thank you very much for the reaction Jesse ❤️
The fact that you say you dont know how youre supposed to feel, or rather you dont think you should be feeling nice about it for very long is really interesting to me. This music scores the final fight and depending on how much you paid attention throughout the game it will either be a terrifying fight for survival or a tragedy of a man who's just trying to help you. Its one of the most beautiful ends to a game Ive ever played, and your feeling sums it up perfectly. So awesome to see you checking out more bloodborne. Youve gotta check out Father Gascoignes theme next!
Some great and beautiful Soulsborne tracks to react, full of storytelling: - Emma, the Gentle Blade -Sekiro - Divine Dragon -Sekiro - Elden Beast -Elden Ring - Living Failures -Bloodborne - Regal Ancestor Spirit -Elden Ring - Dancer of the Boreal Valley -Dark Souls 3
The music in the FromSoftware games is indeed an important part to set the vibe and atmosphere. The boss music also emphasises the lore and character of the bosses. There is usually no overworld music in the games, besides subtle ones in Elden Ring and Sekiro, what makes the boss music even more special in Dark Souls 1, 2, 3 and Bloodborne. I assume it's to make the worlds feel even more dark and decrepit, until the action comes back in with the bosses or music plays in some special places. The community around these games is truly dedicated, that's something to keep in mind when the games are played and footage is shared. But I would still highly recommend to give these games a try. It takes some time before they click to new players, but when they do it's just an amazing feeling of accomplishment. Great work with the video too, the analyses of the music definitely hits the point. It is a boss theme indeed and the emotions behind it you described certainly suit this one.
The first hunter is the boss fight this song plays to. A frail looking old man forever trapped in a nightmare that a higher power wont let him escape from Then you come to the dream, like many who have before. But unlike others, who willingly die in the dream to wake up in the waking world, you refuse that offer, wanting to remain in the dream Then Gherman, the first hunter, takes it upon himself to free you from the dream and the madness he believes you've just displayed, as no man or woman would ever willingly subject themselves to such a fate. Only a mad beast, like so many that already infest the dream The moment this song plays, The first hunter joins the hunt
I'm a little familiar with some Bloodborne, I've always appreciated the songs like classic pieces more than something I'd put on for fun. A lot of pain in the strings and it gets more potent with the addition of more instruments, it almost sounds like the character doesn't want to do this but has to. The bass gives some darkness to the piece reminding you it's not just sadness and tragedy. I like the fake buildup and the choirs are standard but never unwelcome. Not a lot of things I can say about this but I do like it, this type of music I much prefer listening to with a live orchestra in person. I'm sure that this song has some interesting music theory stuff going on that's going straight over my head.
The fight for this has always been so impactful for me, you're both fighting to mercy kill each other, you both know that whoever wins the fight stays trapped in a god's prison and you both so desperately want to make that sacrifice for the other. They couldn't have made the music more perfect for that
When you describe the song as sounding dream-like, that's very much apropos. The central hub of the game is called the Hunter's Dream, a sort of alternate realm that is constructed within the dreams of those who pledge themselves to the Hunt (like the PC). Indeed, much of the game takes place in a sort of dreamlike state, where the Hunter is clearly seeing things that others cannot, and as you go through the game, more and more things that were hidden from you become visible, increasing the sense of unreality. This song embodies the intrinsic tragedy of the Hunter's Dream, as well as its keeper, Gehrman. It is a safe haven, but only so long as you fling yourself out into the waking world to die a thousand miserable deaths. It is a place where you can increase your power, but only by feeding on the blood of countless others who came before you. And ultimately, it is a place you must forget when you finally awaken... for if you choose not to wake up, you may stop being the Hunter and become the Hunted.
Finally more Bloodborne! Any chance you could react to Living failures OST as well? This theme has a grim fantastic/cosmic style and is inspired by Gustav Holst - Mars. I highly recommend listening to this OST :)
In my opinion bloodbornes whole OST is masterpiece, you should definitely listen to all of it on your own time or react to it,, or even better, play the game, the music hits much more with the context when the songs comes in, and the incredible thing is that the music is comes I up with bosses, while you're exploring the world there is no music, it only reserved for bosses
Thank you for reacting to this one omg! I do think you'd enjoy playing Bloodborne if you took your time to enjoy it aesthetically and story-wise. Even after only playing JRPGs I thought the gameplay was quite fun when I got a hang of it, and then it was all just an amazing journey through the lore depths and beyond.
5:23 to me , this part always sounded like the part in movies where the villain reveals he was good this whole time trying to protect the main characters, and now the villain sacrifices himself to save the MC while the MC also wants to save the villain. only in bloodborne whoever wins, loses.
goddamn I still get tears remembering this fight not sure if you ever plan on playing it, so here's the jest of it, so SPOILERS: Gehrman is the keeper of the hunters' dream and also your mentor throughput your journey, when you reach the end and complete your objective and become in his eyes "too strong for your own good" he offers what he sees as "mercy" which is to release you from the dream which in reality is another nightmare, even though he wants that to himself to a point he starts weeping in his sleep, yet he still fights you to stay behind for your own sake
Gherman: I was there Hunter... when the first man gone mad by the Blood... i was there Hunter... when the first Beast appeared... I was there Hunter... when the first Beast was slayed... i was there hunter... when everything happened... I was THE HUNTER and i don't want that for you... so accept my gift and wake up from this nightmare
"Beautiful and gross at the exact same time" its amazing that the music captures the game so perfectly, and that you can pick it up just by listening without other contexts.
Hi there Uncle Jesse. Been a long time. I saw Bloodborne and I just had to watch. And the First Hunter? Had to give you a like. So this music piece plays when you are at the end game and you face your "Guide and Mentor" and your faced with a choice: either you surrender to him and wake up from the dream(vague, I know), or you don´t and Gehrman, The First Hunter, founder of hunters no less, that will make you submit by force. By doing so, you will battle a harden veteran who is very fast, very agile and very deadly in a Moon Lighted flower field while listenning to this amazing muisic piece. And he will do it, he will defeat you as a maning of mercy so you won´t have to suffer his fate. It is beautiful and tragic at the same time, one of the more reasons why I, and many others, love this game so much. "Dear oh dear, what was it? The Hunt? The Blood? Or the horrible Dream? Oh, it doesn't matter... It always comes down to the hunters' helper to clean up after these sort of messes." "Tonight... Gehrman joins the hunt...." Cheers, stay safe and keep on keeping on my friend. Happy VGMs to us all
Oh man, Bloodborne has incredible music and so do all the other Fromsoft games! Ludwig the accursed & holy blade that you mentioned is definitely my favorite. But there's this one, and also the Cleric Beast and so many more. Also do check out Dark Souls 3 and Elden Ring sometime! Soul of Cinder, Abyss Watchers, Iudex Gundyr, Vordt, Dancer of the Boreal Valley... Elden Beast, Margit the Fell Omen, Godskin Apostles. There are SO many great tracks!
So this is one of the three possible final bosses in Bloodborne. (the true requires you to eat 3 of a specific item and fight this character, the normal requires this fight, and the early you say yes to this character, and don't fight him.) The reason it's called The First Hunter, is extremely literal. He is *the* first hunter, and he appears a lot in the game. It's tone as a theme is so melancholy because neither you nor him actually want to fight each other. He wants to set you free from the curse, and you want to set him free. Each only possible by killing the other and waking them from this endless nightmare.
I will note that for me personally, he's one of the easiest bosses in the entire game lol. I use a set based on another character named Lady Maria, and I don't think I've ever lost to the First Hunter, in the 8 playthroughs of BB I've done, but for a *lot* of players, he's considered extremely difficult. He's fast, moves around a lot, has all the options you do as a player, and has a ton of AoE attacks. So you're hearing this music while this man with a scythe is aggressively hunting you down to literally cut your head off. It's a frantic fight full of emotion and more like a dance than probably any other boss besides maybe Lady Maria and the Orphan from the dlc.
Curious thing, they just got a massive success with Elden Ring, but previous to that, Souls games were not that "famous". Even with the success of Elden Ring, they are still rather small Devs in comparison with titans like Ubisoft or Bathesda, but new people are exploring previous Soulsborne games thanks to Elden Ring 🔥 Miyazaki said that they don't want to be only associated to just that, and they enjoy doing what they like, so this is a great moment for them to soon release Armored Core 6 (they know it won't be a commercial hit, but they are in a safe position to take some risks). Also, their composers are in-house too! And they have a band called FreQuency
Well i was going to say you should try watch the game since it is not your kind of game but then you said you dont like to watch games, F... Maybe you have to find a player you enjoy to watch tho, of course if you play it is the best
Maybe because of the context in mind, I always took this song as more...somber. It doesn't feel all that eerie or horrific or anything like that. It's beautiful yet a bit unsettling and generally very somber. Bloodborne isn't my favourite of the series, but it definitely builds the best atmosphere and the music is a big part of that.
I’m in love with Bloodborne’s music. Dark Souls 3 has some bangers too apparently, but the only one I’ve heard was Slave Knight Gael, which was absolutely incredible. Definitely recommend giving that one a look. But for Bloodborne? Oh man. Lady Maria is a certified banger on the level of Ludwig, Laurence is nearly as good, Living Failures is great and The One Reborn is an underrated gem. Can’t go wrong with any of those four. Side note: I hate that people have made it so Souls games are only known for being the “difficult, gatekeeped” games. They offer so much more than hard bosses. I play for their grand music, atmosphere, and unmatched design. It’s beyond any other gaming series ever created. And you’re right that basically every Souls game is loved. Some of the earlier ones are considered less polished, but you’ll find a very vocal fanbase saying each game is the best. I’d say the most popular ones are Elden Ring (as it got so many new fans into the series) and Bloodborne (among people who actually got to play it since it’s a PS Exclusive to this day). But Sekiro, DS1 and DS3 have many, many diehard fans who will argue their game is the best, and even a few would argue for DS2 or DeS. They’re all pretty much 9/10 games.
The part you mentioned about orchestral ambiance struck me because you mentioned you're often lacking the full context to really understand those songs when they are suggested to you. A noteworthy thing about the Soulsborne games is that they all feature a cryptic form of storytelling where you need to puzzle the events together by - among a bunch of other things - pieces of dialogue, the environmental design, item descriptions and the music as well. It's easy to miss the context in Soulsborne games and in fact a decent portion of the players do miss it (perhabs even the majority), which is why the games rely on really thick atmosphere or conveying the story of a boss through the music moreso than what might be typical of other games so that even players who missed the context still understand that something of significance is going on here. It uses the environment, atmosphere and music to give the players a sense of "This sounds really sad. Why is it sounding so sad? Why is the game telling me that me fighting this guy is tragic? There's something more to this." And then the player goes digging in the game and realises there is a whole story to this guy they fought when they put all the pieces together and it all suddenly clicks.
3:27 "like a dream sequence, but also... like looming... death" Jeeze Jessie, you gonna stop being on the nose for these? This area is called "The Hunter's Dream", and its namesake wields a reaper's scythe in obvious homage to death. The boss wants to save you. If they win, you get to live and forget all this madness. If you win, you're forced to take their place and, obvious spoilers, - - - - - - that's awful. And the third option? Difficult to rationalize on a scale of good to bad, but the boss would have thought it good when they were your age, but definitely would think it bad by this point.
Unlike most souls fights where your fighting some legendary warrior or horrifying beast, in this one your fighting a tired old man. A friend even. It’s a fight between two people trying to free eachother from the nightmare they both live in.
Menacing is right. An extremely powerful enemy is going to mercy killing us and there was nothing we can do about it. Very tragic because we reflect our enemy's past life.
German: ho player, let me free you from this game, from this dream of blood and death before only the thirst for blood remains in you, I will free you from this condemnation. Player: no my old friend, let me free you from this eternal condemnation that is this dream, from nightmares with the smell of beasts and violence. of this eternal dream and of the moon that looks at us insidiously.
These games certainly have a steep learning curve, but it's extremely rewarding once you get the hang of it. Would highly recommend at least giving them a shot. DS3 is probably the easiest to pickup and learn, so I would recommend that for a first time.
The First Hunter wants you to return to the waking world and forget all that you've discovered. Also saving you from his fate of eternal servitude to the eldritch god that presides over the dream. You, however are on the mission to slay the "Great Ones" and liberate humanity from the clutches of beasthood. "Tonight, Gehrman joins the Hunt." If you die, you wake up. If you win... well..
hey yknow if you ARE interested in any souls game I think bloodborne is the one to go with. not too long, filled to the brim with absolutely horrifying music, a complete package of fascinating cosmic horror lore, and amazing art direction.
If you're looking for equally unusual boss music... The final section of Magna Insomnia from Final Fantasy XV has a similar feel of percussion-less menacing choir. The Other Promise from Kingdom Hearts II isn't menacing in the same way, but it's also got a sense of impending tragedy and no driving percussion.
Yes it’s a story. The first hunter had lived through the nightmare known as the hunt , for probably hundreds of life times . Witnessing countless hunters dying trying to stop the nightmare. He was the first to succeed and take the mantle of the first hunter. But his life wasn’t his own… he fights to defend a higher power…
Bloodborne exists in a world where people stooped to immoral lows through the use of blood medicine that ended up corrupting many and turning them into beasts. The things you fight seem to menacing and evil, until you realize most of them are victims of the affliction from the world around you. You play a hunter tasked with ending the nightmare, and bringing on a new day in Yahrnam (both literally and figuratively). Gehrman is a tragic character because he guides all hunters on their journeys, most of whom either die, give up, or become beasts themselves. At the end of your journey, he offers you mercy by killing you and waking you up from the nightmare. You only fight him if you refuse his offer… He basically says that you (player character) would have to be mad to want to continue to exist in a world as awful and grotesque as the one you’re in. The fight is essentially, two hunters fighting to save each other, and neither wanting to do so. What’s worse is that, depending on the ending you get, after killing him, you end up taking his place
Not just a battle theme, the FINAL boss theme. Bloodborne has less to do with demons and satanic imagery and more to do with Lovecraft and cosmic horror. Think space octopus and you're a little more on the right track.
TBH, a lot of Soulsborne music kinda just blends together in this sort of... orchestral blob that can become hard to tell apart, especially after DS2, but there are a few big stand outs, and this is definitely one of them. One of the most beautiful boss themes Fromsoft has put in a game, and it's even more beautiful in context. It's this amazing back and forth, like a waltz to the death in a beautiful flower field and its sad and melancholy but also sick AF... Man... Vidya games.
Super spoiler The context is that an NPC you met at the beginning of the game suddenly becomes the final boss as you realize that not only was the 'werewolf hunt' an elaborate eldrich birthing ritual but it repeats itself, everyone involved being trapped in a complex series of dreams and nightmares... the final boss giving you a choice to die peacefully with that knowledge or replace him as the new conductor of the hunter's dream.

Bloodborne may very well be where the Souls formula really peaked, but I am glad they're still working on new ideas.
The wonderful darkness/These mysterious nights
This way I knew eternal mercy/Eternal misery.
Let the evil be hidden (from you)
My life devoted to sustaining the Dream
The insidious Moon
The wonderful darkness/ These mysterious nights
Great One, look upon me and grant eternal mercy (or "Great One has looked upon me and grant this eternal misery").
Man i hope someone requests living failures theme its so good and cinematic for no reason
It takes a lot from "Mars, Bringer of War", not that I'm complaining.
Such a mid boss has such an incredibly climactic and epic theme
The one reborn moment right there, mf has such a good OST lol
Imagine how awe inspiring Gehrman and Maria were when they fought against beasts as master and apprentice.
Dear, oh dear. What was it? The hunt? The blood? Or the horrible dream. Oh- it doesn’t matter. It always comes down to hunters helpers to clean up after these sorts of messes.
Tonight Gherman joins the hunt…
I’ve been waiting for this Bloodborne OST reaction for so long, thank you!
when u played the game its actually hits different
This is my favorite song from bloodborne, I'm so glad you got to hear it!
Bloodborne is a masterpiece, actual masterpiece, put the PS4 on the Top. It's a shame we don't have a 60fps patch for PS5 or PC port.
"It also sound slike a dream sequence, but also looming death"
Truer words have never been spoken.
OH MY GOD THANKS SO MUCH THIS IS MY FAV SONG OF ANY GAME YEEEEEEEEEEEEES
Some great and beautiful Soulsborne tracks to react, full of storytelling:
- Emma, the Gentle Blade -Sekiro
- Divine Dragon -Sekiro
- Elden Beast -Elden Ring
- Living Failures -Bloodborne
- Regal Ancestor Spirit -Elden Ring
- Dancer of the Boreal Valley -Dark Souls 3
A frail looking old man forever trapped in a nightmare that a higher power wont let him escape from
Then you come to the dream, like many who have before. But unlike others, who willingly die in the dream to wake up in the waking world, you refuse that offer, wanting to remain in the dream
Then Gherman, the first hunter, takes it upon himself to free you from the dream and the madness he believes you've just displayed, as no man or woman would ever willingly subject themselves to such a fate. Only a mad beast, like so many that already infest the dream
The moment this song plays, The first hunter joins the hunt
Tonight, Gehrman joins the hunt...
Smash reveals be like
I'm a little familiar with some Bloodborne, I've always appreciated the songs like classic pieces more than something I'd put on for fun.
My favorite song out of any Fromsoft title. It has a very bittersweet feel for me and they really nail the feel of the song for the context it plays.
To choose to either awaken from the nightmare and damn our mentor, or save him from this curse and let him finally rest as the hunt comes to a close.
"Sounds like a dream sequence" dude couldn't be more spot on. It's literally within the Hunter's Dream
Your initial comments were all spot on. Dream, check. Looming death, check.
Learning the story behind the character makes this piece much more impactful. character being Gehrman.
Interesting that you said it sounds like a dream sequence, given the plot of the game and the reveal lol
In fact, understanding this piece is simple. A guy finishes his shift at work and you start yours.
Yes, but he cares for you so he will square with you to stop you from staying in that goddamn job.
5:23 to me , this part always sounded like the part in movies where the villain reveals he was good this whole time trying to protect the main characters, and now the villain sacrifices himself to save the MC while the MC also wants to save the villain. only in bloodborne whoever wins, loses.
"Sounds like a dream sequence"
hoo boy, *hoooooooo boy!*
goddamn I still get tears remembering this fight
not sure if you ever plan on playing it, so here's the jest of it, so SPOILERS:
Gehrman is the keeper of the hunters' dream and also your mentor throughput your journey, when you reach the end and complete your objective and become in his eyes "too strong for your own good" he offers what he sees as "mercy" which is to release you from the dream which in reality is another nightmare, even though he wants that to himself to a point he starts weeping in his sleep, yet he still fights you to stay behind for your own sake
It always comes down to the hunters' helper to clean up after these sort of messes."
"Tonight... Gehrman joins the hunt...."
Cheers, stay safe and keep on keeping on my friend.
(the true requires you to eat 3 of a specific item and fight this character, the normal requires this fight, and the early you say yes to this character, and don't fight him.)
The reason it's called The First Hunter, is extremely literal.
@@LillyTensei Ehh, I would say Matyr, Maria, or The One Reborn are the easiest.
This is my favorite piece of music in BB and my favorite moment in the game in general, incredible scenery
Well i was going to say you should try watch the game since it is not your kind of game but then you said you dont like to watch games, F... Maybe you have to find a player you enjoy to watch tho, of course if you play it is the best
This music can best described as a "hope enveloped in smoke of sadness".....
Usually with Souls games, the environment have no music. But the bosses do. And that’s why the music usually stands out in souls games.
3:27 "like a dream sequence, but also... like looming... death"
Jeeze Jessie, you gonna stop being on the nose for these? This area is called "The Hunter's Dream", and its namesake wields a reaper's scythe in obvious homage to death.
The boss wants to save you.
If they win, you get to live and forget all this madness. If you win, you're forced to take their place and, obvious spoilers,
-
-

that's awful.
And the third option? Difficult to rationalize on a scale of good to bad, but the boss would have thought it good when they were your age, but definitely would think it bad by this point.
To be fair, every fromsoft song I've heard thus far sounds like "death" somehow haha
Finally......... This is the moment I've been waiting for
Souls type games save music mainly for bosses. The game relies a LOT on ambience of the area itself without music.
Loving the Bloodborne music - you should react to Lady Maria of the Astral Clocktower from the DLC!!
Finally the best song in the whole ost and there's plenty of stiff competition. I don't even care for tbe game, but the music is spectacular
Unlike most souls fights where your fighting some legendary warrior or horrifying beast, in this one your fighting a tired old man. A friend even. It’s a fight between two people trying to free eachother from the nightmare they both live in.
Fromsoftware is mainly known for orchestral bliss, they never stray too far away from that but Holy Mother of Omelette its always great
Would love to see more vids on Soulsborne music!
"Beautiful and gross at the exact same time"
Yeah that sums up Bloodborne pretty well.
Bloodborne: a game where the final boss tries to kill you to save you
Menacing is right. An extremely powerful enemy is going to mercy killing us and there was nothing we can do about it. Very tragic because we reflect our enemy's past life.
Best final boss in the series!
it's either isshin or this for me
Funnily enough when i thought about it as a fan of From Software games.. it really is going around and killing stuff or being killed by it.
While people may disagree on which souls game is the "best" it is almost unanimous that Bloodborne completely nails atmosphere more than any other
3:10 Bloodborne in a nutshell
the feeling when you fight this dude :(
German: ho player, let me free you from this game, from this dream of blood and death before only the thirst for blood remains in you, I will free you from this condemnation.
Bloodborne has the best music in any FromSoft game, and, frankly, I don't even think it's close.
Laurence the first vicar ost is amazing.
Another game I highly recommend to you! Very good music!
The night. And the dream. Were long...
Bloodborne for life; ride or die on this spooky horse-drawn carriage
The Souls games and Bloodborne have amazing music. Hmm off the top of my head you should listen to Dark Souls 3 Abyss Watchers theme is a good one
The First Hunter wants you to return to the waking world and forget all that you've discovered. Also saving you from his fate of eternal servitude to the eldritch god that presides over the dream.
You, however are on the mission to slay the "Great Ones" and liberate humanity from the clutches of beasthood.
"Tonight, Gehrman joins the Hunt."
If you die, you wake up. If you win... well..
If you excluded that something lurking in the background, this is technically the final boss BGM.
hey yknow if you ARE interested in any souls game I think bloodborne is the one to go with. not too long, filled to the brim with absolutely horrifying music, a complete package of fascinating cosmic horror lore, and amazing art direction.
You definitely hit the mark on this song 👀
Yes it’s a story. The first hunter had lived through the nightmare known as the hunt , for probably hundreds of life times . Witnessing countless hunters dying trying to stop the nightmare. He was the first to succeed and take the mantle of the first hunter. But his life wasn’t his own… he fights to defend a higher power…
Fine, I'll play bloodborne again
I love this one man
Bloodborne exists in a world where people stooped to immoral lows through the use of blood medicine that ended up corrupting many and turning them into beasts.
You only fight him if you refuse his offer…
He basically says that you (player character) would have to be mad to want to continue to exist in a world as awful and grotesque as the one you’re in.
Now what was it? The blood, the beasts, or the horrible dream?
TBH, a lot of Soulsborne music kinda just blends together in this sort of... orchestral blob that can become hard to tell apart, especially after DS2, but there are a few big stand outs, and this is definitely one of them. One of the most beautiful boss themes Fromsoft has put in a game, and it's even more beautiful in context. It's this amazing back and forth, like a waltz to the death in a beautiful flower field and its sad and melancholy but also sick AF... Man... Vidya games.
Super spoiler
The context is that an NPC you met at the beginning of the game suddenly becomes the final boss as you realize that not only was the 'werewolf hunt' an elaborate eldrich birthing ritual but it repeats itself, everyone involved being trapped in a complex series of dreams and nightmares... the final boss giving you a choice to die peacefully with that knowledge or replace him as the new conductor of the hunter's dream.
Beware final boss OST's in fromsoft's games, they'll get ya 😭
More bloodborne its my Favorit game and I love ost reactions
Indeed I'm surprised there hasn't been much Souls music in the channel. At least Ornstein & Smough should have come by now.
More Fromsoftware OST please!
