  • Today we finally look at the start of the month, the Dendrobium spectabile and his curly, wild flowers!
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
    Dendrobium spectabile is a Latouria type of Dendrobium orchid. More information on its natural habitat here www.orchidspeci...
    This orchid produces typical Dendrobium canes, which plump up towards the upper part, but remain very thin at the base. They have around 4 leaves on top and produce a flower spike from one of the upper nodes.
    The flowers are wild in appearance, the petals and sepals are thin and curled on the edges and around themselves. The lip is broader but it has the same curling tendency. There is a tessellated burgundy brown pattern on all its corolla.
    There is also a mild fragrance reminding of spring flowers, but it isn't perfumed.
    This orchid enjoys warm temperatures, high (Cattleya) light and doesn't appreciate drying out. The canes will shrivel fast if the medium approaches dryness, so make sure you keep up with watering!

    Seriously, perfect timing! I just bought one last week from Seattle orchids. Mature, in spike, free shipping and on sale for $48. The stars aligned and I basically threw my money at them. I really love this bizarre, beautiful orchid!

    I am in love! 💖 the flowers looks like huge, angry wasps to me and I love it! I'm not enthused by the canes/leaves on the other hand but those flowers would be so worth it! This one's going on my wishlist for sure!

    I got this as a gift two years ago, but it died 😭 I’m hoping to get another try at this orchid. I didn’t like the look of the flowers when I saw them online, but in person they’re so gorgeous! Definitely a fave of mine.

    I have one Den. And it an Atroviolacae. The Dens that have to go through the dormancy period with no water etc (soft cane) scare me. I'm always tinkering with my orchids which is probably a no - no but I can't see myself not watering a Den.
    Its beautiful Danny. I love the twisted and wrinkles look of the petals.

      Liveon Ja, oder von Wichmann. Aber das Problem: Ihre Dendrobium ist 3 Jahre alt und blüht jetzt erst. Ich möchte aber eine schon erwachsene Pflanze haben. Und die bekommt man hier leider nirgends 😣

    Hi Danny. Your spectacular is spectacular !!! Delicate, color and pattern -simply beautiful, the “fallen angel “. 🙈. Are they prone to root rot if submerged in water ??

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад +1

      +Thomas M Well if the root grew in high air environment, yes it is very likely. Also if there is very poor oxygen available to it, yes most definitely. But this is valid for all orchids not just this one :)

    • @TY-ob7fz
      @TY-ob7fz 6 лет назад

      MissOrchidGirl I’m thinking semi hydro, with a reservoir part of the roots are likely to be submerge most of the time. Those roots might rot ?
      Went to my first orchid show ever and got a LC Rojo and saw your vid on it. My first cattelaya. 🙃

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад

      +Thomas M I talked about the oxygen levels in the reservoir in my watering in sh videos I think.. So no I don't think they will rot if they grow into it. If they are aerial or close to aerial and potted in the reservoir then yes, they might rot :)

    Hi Danny, can you please explain exactly what the difference is between a Latouria type and say phalaenopsis or nobile types are? I'm a bit confused as to the what separates it from other dendrobium. i.e. is it just the area they grow, or is it their flowers or pseudobulbs?
