This has become one of my fave movies..In the opening scene at the gallery when Isiah first met Stevie and His friend Yusef called him over..He said..”You looking at her like you wanna paint her”.. that line was a huge part of the movie to me..Cause it’s how the movie ends❤
Just saw this movie. Another key point is that his artist mentor Yusef (Michael Ealy) said to keep one piece from each show so that he owned his work. The painting of her was labeled as 'Artist Personal Collection' to show she wasn't art for profit but because she was important to him.
Isaiah "knows her" so well; his painting has subtlety captured *the colors of her dress* in his bed: red and white under brown (her skin complexion), plus the black, and even the gray, in her hair. Stunning! It's clear to me that they became a power couple who lasted in great love through the years. Wow. 🔥
I agree, I walked away concluding they got back together. At the beginning of the film he struggled with communicating through his art, and that’s what was holding him back. I think a lot of it had to do with his family not believing in him or “seeing him.” She almost became the missing piece, because when she entered his life it’s like he was able to say all he needed through his art. The textures and disfigurement of the faces in his art is like language, it communicates so much about the subject but also what he is trying to say about the subject. When she saw the painting, I believe she understood that “he saw her”…truly saw her, and that he was not placing the art above her…As a result, she saw him in that moment also.
I agree. It is very difficult for alpha male type men to acknowledge the woman in their life who has helped them advance their career publicly. At the beginning of the relationship, his 1st painting he gave her illustrated his signature style. The 1st showcase painting played it safe, but after Isaiah opened up to Stevie, she helped him find his voice and the space of separating work from home life to be great. For some strange reason, men tend to think acknowledging his wife/female lover will make him less of a man. We have to change that thinking. Acknowledging people who are instrumental in your life is what any person should do. It takes a village to raise a child applies to people advancing in their career. It takes people, no one does it alone.
I think his painting is a really passionate goodbye. They will always love each other, but their careers make things strained. As a painter he will travel all over the country, possibly even abroad. As a lawyer she will be in a very stressful environment and it will be tough not having someone there every night.
Well, he painted her as an older woman with bits of graying hair (if you look closely) in his bed. So, I feel confident that his vision came true and they made it work through the years. What a legacy!
Look no woman is going to leave a man that has made a visual centerpiece of her as a showcase at his art show that is his personal exhibit he is not selling. During the second fight, he did not know verbally how to say to her the following: "Look I am sorry I misread what you asked from me. I did not want to be an obstacle to your career so I wanted to encourage you to follow your career dreams. Please come to the show tonight, I will visually show you what I am ready to do regarding our relationship." So, I believe your analysis is on point.
Damn, I was wondering the same. He showed his feelings in painter and his hungry for her is in the painting. He has finally showed appreciation for her love and support.
I think it's a passionate goodbye also because I remember the scene where he first gave her a painting and told her to put it where she can see it when she walk in to remind her of something or someone, now the other painter guy that inspires him told him to keep a copy of his paintings and he found it odd, so the painting of( her) which was labeled private I think it was a piece he kept for himself in memory of her.

Sir! Imma stick beside YOUR explanation !!! I watched for the 2 or 3rd times and imma stick TO YOUR HAPPY ENDING! 😩😍 (the frustraaaation was too much…🤭)
Wow great perspective 👍 I immediately thought that she’d be angry at him for putting her business out there like that.. was a lil risky. But l see you’re angle and she’s now equal with his first love, his art.
Ok I think the point was still missed. The mother said repeatedly to not put someone first who wouldn’t do the same for her. He was always putting his work first, the showed that in the movie repeatedly as well. At the end that was showing her he understood, he finally put her first with his art.
Yes. Plus not only did he place his art and her as equals at that moment, that specific piece is not for sale. Can't be bought, because it's his. His private collection to be kept for himself.
I think they stay together, but I also believe the beauty of the film leaves itself open for various interpretations. If you tend to be more romantic and optimistic, you see a world where they make it work. I, for instance, never thought it was a question between his work or her. She felt that way, but I thought he loved both his work, his friends and her. Not in any real order. Simply because his art was the priority right then didn't mean she wasn't a priority. If you are more jaded, a little less romantic, you tend to believe he prioritizes his work, she will be second, and they don't work out. The ending is up to you. As a optimist and a realist, I think they stay together. It won't be easy, but they'll work it out.
I enjoyed a lot your thought process. I saw the movie twice and for me the ending left a lot to be desired. After listening to your video, I had a new different approach to the end of the movie. Sometimes it gets frustrating for me , that I understand the hole movie, and sometimes I just wanna see a ending where even though problems is normal in a relationship, why not show how to work throughout the problems and choose to stay together anyhow. I guess, is just me. Black love display in a beautiful way, minus their communication. I enjoyed your channel. Much Love ❤️
Bro, I was scrolling Netflix and ran across this beauty, this took me back but with a wonderful twist- wasn’t even feelin the nostalgia mood but damn Love Jones, The Photograph….so many well written stories; now I can add this peace to the list.
I agree. It’s very similar to the movie love jones so I can imagine it being the same ending and also given their difference I can also imagine it can be doable to solve their problem with communication especially on Steve’s side.
There was another subtle introduction, before she meets him at the end, Nick proposed with an engagement ring 💍 to her friend that she sees and states that I am so happy for you. Isaiah saw that as well. I bet Nick did it after seeing the Her painting. Also, I noticed that Isaiah was able to fly to Chicago for the showcase which means he is more financially stable. My prediction is Isaiah follows Stevie to Chicago, IL to begin their life together where both can do their dream careers.
They are young, have separate careers and a lot to live for. The male character is self-absorbed. I wish there had been more dialog b/n the parents and also b/n the friends.
I love cc your comments. I agree with your comments. The subliminal message was beautiful the painting says it all. He and she were going to get back together. Her painting was the piece and on the wall by itself. He was saying you are the one for me and stay.
That last part is a bit backward... him asking her to show up at DC was the result of her being at his house in the 1st place, where she ended up saying "If you would have asked me to stay". Not vice versa. Also, he was still putting business side of art before her. Making a picture of her doesn't make her first in his mind. Not acknowledging her at the art show displayed that. Not even shout out to her. You always shout your girl when you get an She award lol! She still needed to leave. As someone who has been "that guy". Mom was right, he wasn't ready. Boss coming over and saying "hey I need you to meet people", and he was out, again. Making a picture does not put your girl first. I'm sure a girl would rather you spend time with her, then saying hey, I'm at the studio making a picture of you all this time. Why not do both.
Good point! This show went like a lot of relationships both are all in the beginning than independent ideas and movement take over. Black love is good but I want to see one black movie without the struggle.
I really like the movie but was disappointed with the ending I like that he did a painting of her, but I felt they should've embraced each other maybe showed a little of their lives afterwards, I think they got back together because both realized how much they love each and I don't think either could be really happy without the other.
I would had preferred her to at least turn around and gave him the look of approval. Instead she look kind of disturbed by what she saw. Also the scene before that when he ask her to stay with him. She was still back on the old feelings a year ago. So not much change in a years time

Love when a story comes full circle!
Just saw this movie. Another key point is that his artist mentor Yusef (Michael Ealy) said to keep one piece from each show so that he owned his work. The painting of her was labeled as 'Artist Personal Collection' to show she wasn't art for profit but because she was important to him.
Good catch!
Isaiah "knows her" so well; his painting has subtlety captured *the colors of her dress* in his bed: red and white under brown (her skin complexion), plus the black, and even the gray, in her hair. Stunning! It's clear to me that they became a power couple who lasted in great love through the years. Wow. 🔥
if anything, that painting answered all uncertainties. they truly love/loved each other in the past and present
I agree, I walked away concluding they got back together. At the beginning of the film he struggled with communicating through his art, and that’s what was holding him back. Wow!
Well said.
I didn’t think they broke up either, but maybe that was me just being a hopeless romantic lmfao
The movie it's self is a painting in motion. I suggest all artist watch this twice and you'll fully see and appreciate the love from this movie.
great assessment, you nailed IT‼️ I was salty how it ended BUT it forces US the viewer to use our mind.
Damn, I was wondering the same. He showed his feelings in painter and his hungry for her is in the painting. He has finally showed appreciation for her love and support.

Thank you your assessment because I was definitely CONFUSED! I don’t like for things to be open and left up to me.

I literally agree with every single word you said! Great assessment 🤎
Thanks for the insightful breakdown of the ending which gave me a different perspective into what was at times a frustrating film.

They are young, have separate careers and a lot to live for. The male character is self-absorbed. I wish there had been more dialog b/n the parents and also b/n the friends.

That's how I feel too!
Good break down. I agree.

Thank youuuuu I’m literally in love with movie loved your insight
Good point! This show went like a lot of relationships both are all in the beginning than independent ideas and movement take over. Black love is good but I want to see one black movie without the struggle.
Great break down.
I concur. Their love conquered all...
You are good. 🙌
I agree with you
Great review 👏
Great job.
I really like the movie but was disappointed with the ending I like that he did a painting of her, but I felt they should've embraced each other maybe showed a little of their lives afterwards, I think they got back together because both realized how much they love each and I don't think either could be really happy without the other.
Not once did they show the male character give any of his earnings to Stevie after all that time he lived w/ her for free. 🤔
He did give the paintings 🖼 🤔
I would had preferred her to at least turn around and gave him the look of approval. Instead she look kind of disturbed by what she saw. Also the scene before that when he ask her to stay with him. She was still back on the old feelings a year ago. So not much change in a years time
Please review movies that are two or three years older too like Queen and Slim❣🤌love your explanation though
Late but I agree! The girls/guys/other who get it get it😌😭💞💞
🤯👏🏾
I wanted to know if there is second part
Wow.. I didn't see that but it makes sense
Nice theory...
Long distance relationships are hard
He has to move to Chicago, IL
I first I though she went to break up with him and move on
Which mic do you use?

You r so perceptive
