On the first generation Mini the S model and the a Automatic use the same starter. The part number I used on my Getrag 6 speed transmission swap was 17854
Love your happy face and enthusiasm when completing a successful job !!! I am in the process of putting a Cooper S GETRAG BKD gearbox (no uplift) to my R50 and I have seen there is a conversion kit.. would you happen to know a list of parts required. Thanks
Damn, I can't wait to do this! This was going to be my first mod, but the previous mechanic's work didn't allow that to happen lol. I'm still rolling a reverse-less midland 5, with gearing that mimics a slipping clutch lol. Hopefully, I'll be able to do this next year. I'm so ready to have a 2nd gear worth a damn.
Hey I just got a 04 mini 1.6 not supercharged, yes it has a beautiful CVT, watch ur video , n I think I going to try to do the swap , can you send me a list of the swap items you used . Please . And thank you.
Hi Collin. I know this is a year-old video, but hoping you still see comments here. I have officially purchased all the parts for an Auto to Manual swap and am getting ready to start planning out everything. I came across a listing on a parts seller that listed steering columns for auto and manual as different part numbers. Can you confirm if you had to swap steering columns in addition to trans, pedals, collant hoses, axels, oil cooler, mounts, wiring harness, and the other small items?
I did not have to change the steering column, wiring harness, oil cooler or any coolant hoses. I spliced into the wiring harness to add the reverse light connector, which I suggest over swapping the whole harness.
I will be putting out a video sometime soon that will cover all necessary parts for swaps from auto to 5 speed, 5 speed to 6 speed, and from auto to 6 speed.
@@datonyta Had to run a separate lead from the ECM (not engine harness - but the side nearest firewall that goes to cabin). Drilled out empty pin #4 (see Bentley manual ELE-53) to insert a connector with wire and pin stolen from my replaced CVT wiring harness. That went to pin #8 on EWS (engine immobilizer) blue/black wire. Needed to get a clutch safety switch and a pigtail to get the proper pins and wires. Its other wires went to A. Power to a spliced ignition on hot lead, B. to ground. Car now starts correctly, clutch must be depressed. Good luck, Tony! 👍
Hi Collin... Just completed the same manual swap. Noticed that you don't have an oil cooler in the oil filter. Have you had any issues? I have mine setup without one as it is not tracked or driven hard.
Just watching your video, and had the thought when i bought my R50. Mine is the 5 speed, and with you going from auto to manual, what would i have to do to swap mine? I'm thinking of keeping it NA but beef up the motor a bit. Great video by the way!
Thank you! Your swap should be a bit easier. You already have the right pedal box and master fluid lines, although the slave cylinder lines may be different. Not sure about the trans mount, it may be different. Have a look at the clutch slave cylinder fluid lines and the transmission mount/bracket to see if they’re different, otherwise it should basically be just like a clutch job.
I have 2 minis the black one is an s series the blue on is a base model(same but different).both are 2008 black one is manual blue is an automatic with shifter paddles could I transfer the blue engine to the black ? Is it possible?
I would not recommend putting a Cooper engine in a Cooper S because of how much other work would be required to make it run correctly. They may be similar but they are not compatible.
Hey buddy cool video man ,want ask a question I buy 2003 mini cooper s with broken transmission need swap out would one from 06 fit right on ? Thank you
Hey what’s up Collin. I got a question I’m in the same boat as you. Want to make manual conversion but my car is convertible that I want to do it with. If a swap engine and transmission including steering column clutch pedal. Is the convertible still going to work?? I’m curious. And also just in case if I need to program my ecu can you hook me up with some connections. I live in Texas.
You don’t need to swap the engine or the steering column, but yes you will need to program the ECU to manual status. The convertible top won’t be affected by any of it, that will still work just fine.
I have two minis hard top witch I crashed and got bored with the hard top I’ve been having the other mini convertible sitting for over 7 years and it’s time to swap everything to the convertible. Sorry I was referring the key immobilizer since swapping out the ecu. Or should I just program it into manual status? How much dose that cost in your area ? Can I ship it to your guy so he can program it hook me up bro. 😅 haven’t started yet . Im planning this out first what to do and not to do.
What’s all involved when servicing the supercharger on my R53 Mini? Is it pretty easy? And awesome getting him back together nothing like a manual Mini
There is an oil reservoir at each end of the supercharger that can be drained and filled. Good idea for any car that is new to you if you don’t get full records with it. You can also check for scoring on the tips of the fins. A few here and there is not a problem but heavier scoring may indicate bearing wear. Inlet and outlet gasket, water pump and associated o-rings. This one isn’t supercharged though, my other one is.
i have an r56 that i'm thinking about manual swapping, i know it wouldn't be the same but id hope it'd be similar. was the changing around of the subframe necessary for the fitment of the new transmission? and are the drive shafts different between the auto and manual? how was reprogramming the ECU?
No need to change the subframe. All I did was replace all of the old bushings and joints while it was out. Driveshafts are different though. The splines going into the transmission are different. Programming will take some big brain thinking if it’s your first time. I have the software now but I actually hired someone to do it over the air when I did my swap. I can send his contact info if you’d like.
@@collinryser sorry i didn’t see this when you responded, but thank you for the contacts, i’ve realized that this project may be a bit unreasonable for me to take on so i’ve moved on to other ideas
I bought the clutch kit with the flywheel from someone locally through Facebook Marketplace, but you can get it new from Valeo or most distributors that sell MINI parts.
Ok I got it! But my question is when I swap to manual transmisión It’s necessary that piece? Or it’s fine with the single flywheel? Maybe that’s why my mini steel on neutral!
@@franciscoreyes151 You definitely can not use the flywheel from the automatic transmission if you are installing a manual transmission. You will need a clutch assembly.
If you haven’t programmed it yet, you’ll need to jump a couple wires where the gear position sensor used to be to tell the car that the transmission is in park or neutral.
It requires some specialized BMW software. Since this was my first time doing it I actually found someone who knew the software to do it remotely, look for Ben’s Bimmer Services on Facebook.
