  • We haven't just been preparing for Rosies calf for the last couple weeks, we've been working hard to make sure Rosie is happy, healthy and set up for success to have a calf for over a year now. I'll be the first to admit that homestead is a BEAUTIFUL way of life, but it does have its hardships. When we lost Rosies calf back in January last year it hit us hard, but I know it hit Rosie harder. We promised to get her back to health and that's exactly what we did. This is the most active calf I've ever had the pleasure of witnessing. He loves head rubs, a good drink of milk and being playful. Wish us luck as we start our Raw Milk Journey!

As we step into another journey on our homestead (Milking a cow) I'm so thankful for this opportunity to share our experiences. I feel that the deeper we get into this way of life, the more we connect to our ancestors, the more I understand just how amazing it is to appreciate the simple things in life. Thank you all so much for coming along on our journey.

we built a step up milking parlor to milk two at a time. a jersey will easily step up 11 inches so you dont have to bend over so far. to late but if you re build set it up so they can go forward to leave, that’s a setup, pass through parlor. makes your life easier. also you can milk once a day (oad) with jerseys. we leave the calves on for about 5 weeks until they’re grazing. pure alfalfa is to hot for always feeding.

  • @tomvandenbergh4127

Congratulations! You did the right thing by stepping in and helping. I usually pull calves if they are not born within 20 or thirty minutes after you see the feet. I know you are new at this, so this isn't meant to be harsh, but normally cows have their calves lying down. Even though she is very tame and comfortable with you, it probly delayed her calving a little bit by you being in the pen with her. That is why she remained standing. Their maternal instincts really kick in at calving time. Having said that, there is no damage done with her calving while standing. Many times they do stand if you get in with them and assist. The placenta should come out within the next 12 hours or so. Rosie will most probably eat it and that is gross but ok. I've owned a small dairy farm for almost 40 years so I've witnessed a lot of calf births. Good luck with your new baby!!!

Regarding your milking area. Do yourself a favor. Affix a place you can drop a backup board on that stand. It will help her steady down to it when she starts this journey. Just get a piece of 2x8 and affix it to the side at the back about the height 12 inches down from what would be her top height. Put another piece on the outside of the other side and ut a notch for a 2x4 or metal bar to be able to drop into it. This will keep her from backing up on you while milking.
