- The ShinMaywa US-2 is not just an amphibious aircraft-it’s a game-changer. Operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF), this cutting-edge seaplane is designed for high-risk search and rescue (SAR) missions, capable of landing on rough seas with waves up to 3 meters (10 feet) high.
With its STOL (Short Takeoff and Landing) capability, state-of-the-art avionics, and unparalleled water operation performance, the US-2 pushes the boundaries of what an amphibious aircraft can do. Whether it’s rescuing stranded sailors in extreme conditions or transporting emergency personnel to remote islands, this machine is built to operate where others can’t.

Incredible! Thank you Japan for being yourselves and still using your beautiful sunrise naval flag.
Simply the coolest plane ever built. Japanese simply know how to build great stuff! I'd love to see more of them in a civilian use - fire fighting, cargo, whatever.

How impressive, Australia needs these.
The air forces or coast guards of most nations need these. If an airliner ditches outside of helicopter range help will be a long time in coming. Basing in Perth, Darwin and Sydney would cover most eventualities. Perhaps in 10 years there will be tilt rotors that can take over in certain ranges but never as much as being able to conduct a rescue half way across the pacific, Indian ocean or Atlantic.
This airplane is right up there with my favorite aircraft and of amphibius it is number one. Thank you for this video.
On January 23, 1992, US-1A (9081) was dispatched to rescue an emergency ejection pilot from an F-16 belonging to Misawa Air Base, approximately 1166 km offshore(Pacific Ocean) from Tokyo(Atusgi base). The rescue mission was not an easy one with only 30 minutes to spare at the scene, but the pilot was successfully rescued. The rescued pilot was Air Force Lieutenant General John Dolan(At that time, Captain), who later became the commander of U.S. forces in Japan.

Lt. General Dolan, who was serving at Misawa Air Base at the time as Deputy Director of Standards Assessment, Flight Assessor, and F-16 Flight Instructor(at that time, Captain), was flying to Tyndall Air Base, Florida, that day for a "Coronet West 30" deployment. While performing a collision avoidance maneuver, a KC-135 Stratotanker unexpectedly struck him from below.
The F-16 in which Lieutenant General Dolan was flying lost control and immediately crashed into the Pacific Ocean. Approximately five hours later, a Maritime Self-Defense Force rescue flying boat arrived on the scene.

It's an amazing beast, well done Japan,
Salut la teub cofa de France aussi! bidon et inutile ce gros pénis de la seconde guerre! juste une vielle fierté d'un vieux pays! inutile
This is all around a fantastic airplane, but it's stol performance is incredible. My hat is off to Japan.
What is more surprising than this aircraft being the world's best amphibious aircraft is that it is the first aircraft that Japan, which suffered destruction of its aviation industry and aircraft technology by the Allied Forces after World War II, designed and built from scratch in 50 years. It didn't require much financial support and didn't go through much trial and error. Japan's aircraft design potential is enormous.
Well, ShinMaywa has a lot of experience making amphibious planes. They used to go with the name Kawanishi.
@@mogaman28 Not only Shinmei Industries, but also the whole of Japan had long since given up military power after World War II, and there were no aircraft production projects at all. The US series is the first aircraft project that Japan has restarted, and the developer of US2 directly participated in the broadcast and said that he started with no basic technology. He was interviewed directly about documents from World War II. He had to collect basic aircraft data, not amphibious aircraft, and started in a harsh research environment...
@@mogaman28 The predecessor of the US-2, the US-1, is an aircraft whose development began in 1966, and the Kawasaki is an aircraft that came out after the 1980s. The US-1 and C-1 are projects that started at the same time. They were born thanks to researchers who started from scratch despite Japan's aircraft capabilities being reduced to ashes after Japan's defeat in the war.

I like how clean Japanese maintaining their military equipments. I didn't see any rust even how many times those planes floating on the sea.
There is a very good reason why there is no rust on planes, it's because planes are made from non-ferrous metals.
@@tonywadkins5258most planes uses non-ferrous metal like aluminum, but still corroded.
While this plane uses composite material for their fuselage and wings. The combination of carbon fiber, glass fiber, and epoxy resin.

Belo avião,o melhor que já vi
It's a pity more countries didn't buy them. A very useful aircraft, with amazing shortfield capabilities
Fantastic footage. I can agree on US’s likely request over Japan’s military spending to increase by 50% on a condition like these gem companies like ShinMaywa continue to develop better seaplanes, even higher specs, with more orders, hundreds of them, from its government. For our defense of the vast coastline, not F-35s or next generation fighter jets but these amphibious planes and variants might be what Japan truly needs in my opinion. Love the simulator. One day, I’d like to be on one of these as a guest. By the way, how far can this model travel on a full tank? Thanks for posting!

Smart to keep this technology alive, being refueling can be done by landing. Also rescues also if they ran out of fuel just land.
PAF should aquire some of this for landing@rescue operation
Although discontinued by many countries, the "flying boat" is very suitable for island nations in SE Asia. Hint, Hint.
a firefighting version of this would be cool
I thought Japan stopped using the rising sun flag of WW2 after the war. But I see it being used on their new amphibious airplane.
ChatGPT said:
You're right that Japan's use of the Rising Sun flag has been a subject of controversy, but the situation is a bit nuanced.
Japan actually has two different Rising Sun flags:
The Imperial Japanese Army (IJA) version, which had the red sun with 16 rays and no border. This was used extensively during Japan’s militarist expansion and is strongly associated with World War II.
The Imperial Japanese Navy (IJN) version, which has the same sun and rays but is offset to the left with a red border around the edges. This design was adopted by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) after the war and is still in official use today.
The amphibious aircraft you saw is likely the ShinMaywa US-2, used by the JMSDF. Since Japan's modern navy considers itself a direct successor to the Imperial Japanese Navy, it has continued using the Rising Sun ensign (the naval version), much like how other countries maintain historical naval traditions.
While many in Asia, particularly South Korea and China, view the flag as a symbol of imperial aggression, Japan defends its use, arguing that it is a long-standing maritime tradition, much like how Germany still uses the Iron Cross as a military emblem despite its association with the World Wars.

An amphibious aircraft is a plane that can take off and land on both water and land. But this plane is not shown taking off from or landing on land. I asked ChatGPT:
Technically, the ShinMaywa US-2 is a seaplane rather than a true amphibious aircraft. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably, there is a distinction:
Seaplane - Can land and take off from water but lacks landing gear for land operations.
Amphibious Aircraft - Can operate on both water and land, typically equipped with retractable wheels.
The US-2 is designed primarily for maritime rescue and transport missions. It has a hull-shaped fuselage optimized for water landings, but it does not have conventional landing gear for land-based runways. However, it does have small retractable beaching wheels that allow it to be moved on land, but these are not for takeoff or landing.
So, strictly speaking, it is not a true amphibious aircraft like the Grumman Albatross or the Canadair CL-415, both of which have full retractable landing gear. The US-2 is best classified as a modern flying boat rather than an amphibian.
chat It seems that GPT has never been to an air show. I took a photo of the US-2 sitting proudly on the Air Self-Defense Force's runway. This aircraft has a sturdy bottom that is not afraid of rough seas, but the landing legs are very small and cute.
