No, I think he should be confronted and suspended. To be incarcerated for such pittances when interest on his accrued income since he became a minister could pay for all these “gifts”, the punishment seemed excessive.

In my opinion, no to jail term. If I hold such a position, people definitely would want to give me things or discounts. It is not wrong. Unless I request or demand.
Removing him from his position is already a punishment n embarrassment. There are far more important crimes to look into it. Let Mr Iswaran move on. All humans make mistakes, and Singaporean should look at the bigger picture n forgive him. Who are we to judge.

It is just a case of 贪小便宜, greedy for small benefits. A jail sentence would be excessive,. Getting dismissal and being fined should be more appropriate punishment.

For countries that view corruption as likely or assuming it's alright for high position minister to acccept gifts and favours, this punishment is excessive. However, we Singaporean (at least me and my circles of friends) think the jail term should be handled out in accordance with the law regardless of one's status. Corruption is not to be tolerated in Singapore. He should know the consequences when he acccepted those gifts. If there is any hint of exception in the sentencing, come voting time, and the results will be reflected. By the way, the Singapore election is just months, if not a year, from now.

Iswaran should be given a very heavy punishment. The AG is only looking at 6 to 7 months of jail time. The defending lawyer Davinder Singh is pleading for just 6 to 7 weeks. But the public would like to see a 6 to 7 years of jail time. Here is my reasoning. All ministers have taken the oath of being clean and non bias or shown of favoritism in the execution of duty and always for the benefit for the nation. In return the minister will be paid highly as Singapore is renowned for being the highest paid civil servants and Prime Minister and President being the highest paid on this Earth. The public has given the confidence and high pay hence it is the party PAP who has the final say on how he will be punished. The former great leader LKY would have put him in jail no less than 3 years and maybe a cane. But the party has experience a moral decay by being lenient. His son LHL prefer to turn a blind eye and quickly sweep this incident under the carpet. Hence Iswaran and his lawyers plead guilty and seek leniency and wrap the case ASAP. There is no follow up on opinions in the country’s media such as ST and CNA. Even social media was quite quiet on this affair.

If there is a Hollywood in the US, there is also one in Singapore Just sit in jail for a while and prove to the world and ppl of Singapore that the CPIB are not corrupt and that the government has zero tolerance for corruption. It is laughable that the PAP insisted on astronomical tax-funded salaries and huge bonuses to eliminate corruption but time and again, they have been proven wrong. While they are enjoying sky-high salaries and bonuses, the average citizens are fighting for survival with escalating food, utilities and medical costs.
Why was there no investigation into a certain Minister's sale of his bungalow for S$88m which he had bought for close to S$8m? Who is the benefactor or who is the trustee and why would they be willing to pay S$88m for a S$8m bungalow? Why was this not covered widely? Singapore has been used as a haven for money laundering.
Please investigate the sale transaction and account for the huge profit to the Minister who is a Public Servant. It is a public matter because he is paid with public funds.

All Ministers in charge of critical Ministries are under surveillance as a matter of routine. EVERYTHING that Iswaran did and took was known to Govt for many decades/years. The extremely detailed lists of services/items given to Iswaran shows that all along there have been people within the Govt and even employees within HPL and Lum Chang - who kept detailed records. Govt decided at one point that Iswaran had crossed the limit.

Our guess is that the prosecution don’t have a case against Ong Beng Seng and Lum Kok Seng. Section 165 applies to public servants accepting gifts but doesn’t penalize non-public servants from offering gifts. And since prosecution couldn’t prove that Iswaran had done any favours after receiving the gifts, it is unlikely the two men will be charged for corruption. Our two cents worth!

Iswaran became too arrogant for his own good and got careless. I don't think he was necessarily corrupted but just got careless and realized too late of the folly of his actions and in attempting to cover up, it just got worse for him. The Singapore SOP is great for making their employees toe the line and at the same can also be used as a tool to get rid of their opponents

In Malaysia, in 2009 and 2015, two persons were permanently silenced. Mr.Teoh Beng Hock discovered the irregularities which leads to investigation by MACC and was found dead on the 14th floor of the anti corruption bureau building. At that time, Teoh BH was a political aide to the then-Selangor executive councilor Ean Yong.
Public prosecutor, Kevin Morais was found dead on one fateful day after family member found him unusually to return home late. Mr Morais never reached his house after leaving office on that day. Several months before his passing, he was involved in the investigation relating to high government officials.

@kamsiahg Corruption cases at the higher echelon of governance are kept at bay, and if necessary, it will be investigated by CPIP in Singapore. It is not so in Malaysia.
Nevertheless, there is no such thing as a perfect country. We are human society with complex thoughts and desires. It is a matter of decision making and the corresponding consequences. We reap what we sown. There are no such things as zero crime countries in reality. A perfect country but hypothetical.
" I think therefore I am." Translated from Latin, " cogito, ergo sum"
The 1st principle of Rene Descartes' philosophy.
What the statement is trying to convey is that if I doubt that I am doubting, then I am doubting, and if it is in fact the case that I am doubting, then it must be the case that I exist. It is important to see that this same type of analysis doesn't hold with other activities, such as walking.
In the case of S Iswaran's corruption charges, he denied the reason for accepting gifts in the past from Mr.Ong Beng Seng, which was a form of bribery act. Therefore, he doubted those gifts were a form of bribery after certified procurement of a certain contract to the other party. This case also involves OBS and the chairman of Lum Cheng Contractors.

It is by 'luck' that Iswaran was investigated because of CPIB's digging into OBS's case, else no one will ever know a minister is accepting gifts from a businessman.
So an extremely well paid minister does not mean he or she will not do such things.
Should the government employ undercover spies to monitor government officials, ministers and whistleblow on them, instead of 'by luck' such cases are found out ?

He is the perpetrator who schemed the whole charade so well, a truly slimy individual in our society.
The PAP government must punish and expel him from Singapore permanently, then I would say the PAP
is being fair to Iswaran and just in the eyes of Singaporeans and the world at large. Yes Iswaran brought
shame to his fellow Singaporeans through his greed and shameless behavior.
