I really want this as my first car...for the longest time I've been a Mitsubishi fan and was gonna get the gsx, but with that engine on the 3000GT there's soo much more power I could put into it. I can't wait to own one of my own.
@dblancer the 3000gt is only classified as a GTO when sold in asia. It is the right hand variant of the 3000gt and actually came b4 the 3000gt or the stealth. They had to change the name to 3000gt in order to sell it in the states, because of the pontiac and ferrari gto's. GTO stands for Gran Turismo Omologato. Thanx.
They do, but that's at the crankshaft. A dyno measures horsepower at the wheels (actual horsepower). So if I were to convert my wheel horsepower (WHP) to crank horsepower, it would be around 400hp/435tq.
I have a -97 legnum VR4. it has been driven about 100 000km. I myself have been driving 13 000km now, and not even one singel problem. The 6A13 TT Engine is very good, aslong as you have oil and other fluids in it :) and yes, it´s a pretty fast original mass produced car =)
Depends what mods. There are modifications you can do which improve the car and is generally accepted as not decreasing the value. Things like lowering springs, window tint, an exhaust system, aftermarket rims, or a boost controller. Say if you want to put subwoofers in it, and you throw some cheap deck and a generic box in the trunk, yeah that's not helping your value. But say you get a custom made box that hides away in a corner, and touchscreen deck, then you're probably increasing value.
@8SECEVO8 true... but these days between ebay and the forum... you can get a used 6G72 for 1200-2000... and now on 3SX you can get a 3.1l stroker short block for about 3500... It's not so expensive if you know where to look and can do your own work.. Which is a key part of it being cheaper... If you cant do your own work i would say dont even consider buying a VR4 over a Evo
@randomradicalstuff In that video there wasn't much done. Just a boost controller and exhaust basically. Now there's not much that hasn't been modified. FIrst and foremost is maintenance. Make sure all the little things are done, and all the maintenance items are taken care of, then start doing mods.
@SML693 The all-wheel steering really only helps on highway lane changes, or a slalom course. The EVO definitely handles better. VR4 can carry it's weight in the turns just fine though.
Actually its mostly due to a very popular movie with Vin Diesel. Both engines can hold 1000+ hp, there's just not as much aftermarket from major companies for the VR4, hence higher costs to modify. Support is growing these days though.
@randomradicalstuff right the engine in the 3000gt is just a monster....the amount of power you can run threw it is just insane it makes me proud to own a 1995 3000gt vr4 =]
@evilevo420 - i'm talking about EVO 8's like in the video. I could say 1st and 2nd gen VR4's run 13 flat and high 12's completely stock, because it has happened, but im talking about the average driver's time.
I'll even give you some help in your arguement, just so you'll have SOME correct information. The first 2 years the car was made, 91-92 was given an 18-spline output shaft (thats what goes from the transmission to the transfer case) which is known to be the weak point in the drivetrain after repeated launches on those years. Every year after this, 93-99, was given the 25-spline, which is known to be pretty much bullet proof.
@clumbzlbc Unfortunately 3/S's aren't common enough for Shep to build us one. There probably wouldn't be enough people interested in buying one to warrant the R&D. But the stock trans has seen over 1000hp repeatedly and held up fine, so no real need. Also, they aren't considered a DSM.
@MYDELUXEPACKAGE My transmission is fine..running 467 BHP and 583Nm of torque in an Evo VI Tommy Makinen.. had 511Nm in my Eve V RS..no problems. As said before..Driver is a key point.
Depends how you drive. I can get up to 27mpg on the highway, if I keep my foot out of boost. It only happens on long trips, I normally get closer to 10mpg. :D
@TeHwAy2b You can build an 11 sec 3S for $3,000 ray pampena has done it.. Even has the list of mods & how-to of how to do it and videos to show it's been done. It's easy to make a 3S fast... It doesn't get expensive till you want to run 10's.. At that point any car is expensive to make that fast... And the 11 Sec for 3K is still with power steering, A/C, full interior etc...
@SUSOAB I find that to be pointless personally. It can only cause more lag, and won't get any more power than a good set of twins. But nothing wrong with a big single, less parts to replace when something blows and less piping to worry about, plus it looks much meaner under the hood. :p
@clumbzlbc They were not designed by Diamond Star Motors. They were designed/produced in Nayoga, Japan by Mitsubishi and imported to the US. So were the Dodge Stealths. You have one right? Go find Diamond Star Motors anywhere on your car, and I'll concede. The Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse, and Plymouth Laser were all assembled in Normal, Illinois as part of the DSM agreement. The 3S was not part of that.
i have both an evo 8 and a 91 gvr4, and have had loads of dsm's, even an evo 1. stock for stock no gen gvr4 or 3kgt will take any evo. not to say they dont have the potential to. the evo 8 ran a 13.1 stock
regardless a vr4 wont stay with an evo around the twisties without some amazing tires and suspension mods, and even then it would be difficult without some weight reduction. 110 feet is really good for that car, id like to see where u got those numbers if you dont mind
You're wrong. 91-93 came with 300hp stock. 94-99 came with 320hp stock. The Gentleman's Agreement applies to Japan, not the USA. The difference in the hp is 2psi of boost. 91-93 vs EVO stock would be a close race, both generally run low 14's. 94-99 I would hand the VR4, as they generally run mid-high 13's stock.
Gas really not bad if maintenance is at par. Maintenance will kill u though. I was making 4k month and moved up from GST to vr4 and had to sell cuz couldn't afford it. Remember its a 20 year old car . Its no different owning a 911 turbo Real sport cars r expensive all of them. Looking to buy another one soon! Now that I'm finally over 6 figures.
They are both bad ass cars, I mean come one they are both Mitsu's. It really balls down to who has the deepest pockets and who can drive better. The 3000 was way ahead of it's time, if it would have come out 10 years later than it did they would probably still be around today. Evo's pretty much take from the 3000 the AWD drive system and all so they are both stout in stock form. I think the EVO would probably win because most 3000's that are still around are in bad shape.
@jgmtiger I came across a 92 vr4 for 4k but needs the motor rebuilt due to no compression on 3 cylinders. I'm contemplating getting it but i hear alot of people talking about getting the 2nd gen vr4 from 94 and up instead
@randomradicalstuff true, the VR4 is underrated... it would beat almost every tuner in a drag race... but the evo has just a way better chassis ... and you could modify a honda civic and it could beat both of them... by the way i live in switzerland:)
I do think that the VR-4 put up quite a fight. Especially considering it's down on HP and hugely overweight in comparison to the Evo. I would prefer the VR-4 for two reasons; One, the interior doesn't look cheap or slapped together by some kid with his mom/dad's credit card. Two, it's a 2door that's as quick as most others but still some decent room in the back if you just HAVE to carry someone with you for a late night cruise. Plus there's a convertible, how exactly can you beat that?
yea i mean i love my vr4 an miss it (still in the garage) but its a killer for gas (70-80 a week for gas) an yes mitsu's do cause crankwalks but its something that is fixable i will have an still keep my vr4, so yea if you want the vr4 make sure you have money cause gas an repairs will hit you in the future but yea GO VR4 ~Roney
@jgmtiger True True, I'm so used to people talking about stuff they dont know about cars on here I didnt take the time to think that yea you never said stock and that a BB can fit in there since I had one. My bad bro.
my first car is a vr-4 and I baby it so bad, I get it a waxed detail as well as interior like every two weeks, and change the oil out every 2k miles, and just got the engine rebuilt a while ago, I am broke for my car lol
I just got a 1991 3000gt vr-4 for my first car and it looks like it just came off the show room (no mods all original). Would I take away value if I added anything? (Subs etc...)
@clumbzlbc Yeah im sure there are bad ones, my dsm tranny was a pos untill shep blessed it. Im still on an exeddy dual clutch and standard doing fine, this summer alone Ive had over 75 passes.
@red182ek92 ha ha I always wanted one but like you say I only see them with like 200K plus miles. So, to me they are worn out and I wouldn't but it but on the other hand it makes you think damn, I gotta keep my eye out for a low mileage stealth and it would last forever. I see a couple in my area that have been on the rd. for years and one smokes but still goes I guess. I've tried to antagonize a race and niether respond so they probably drive easy too. IDK this a hard one to call.
Twizted, I hate morons. =[ I'm running a 92 RT/TT, I launch ALL the time, and my drivetrain is solid, the only thing I check is my Transfer case. =P I need to buy a bracket for it. Either way, nice try on the Evo. I've rolled stock evos in my stock Stealth.. As said before, it really all comes down to who has more money. Twizted's launch wasn't flawless, but it was hella better then the Evo's. ;) Cya on the forums, Twizted. =D
Technology huh? Power to weight? In stock form they're equals at BEST, usually with the VR4 being faster. The Evo just came with a bigger turbo so you can up the boost and see more results with less mods than you can with the VR4's stock turbos (in the states anyway). Price and demand is why the VR4 was stopped. There was so much "technology" in them, they cost $45k+, and it couldn't compete with Joe Schmo Corevette at the time.
What does a Galant VR4 have to do with a 3S? The GVR4 and a 3000GT VR4 are world's apart.... That aside, I've never seen a stock Evo 8 timeslip better than 13.4 and most i've seen are above 14 seconds...care to provide a link that proves your claim? I'm interested to see it. And again, I can truthfully say a 2nd gen VR4 runs 13.0 stock, because it has happened. It's just not the norm, which is what you would normally go by when comparing cars.
@bloodroz what are you talking about? also you dont buy am evo for the drag races... an evo belongs on a race track or rally, where a VR4 has nothing on it...
stay away from the 91-93s, I bought a 95 for $3500. its my second 3000gt both 95s and both for $3500 just look on craigslist and You qill find good deals. there is a 1999 3000gt sl for sale in portland oregon or for $5,900
@twizted3kgt no its the ppl that dont down shift right double clutch or get into it shift short or to late and fuckin slam on the gear when they shift shove it hard down or shove it hard up if your calm while racing youll win and your ride will last its simple
I have a 93' Vr4 and i love it, i would have no other car. yea its 17 years old but it runs like a mofo i got it up to 160mph about a week ago and scared the shit out of my buddy's that were in the car, i like the look of the 1st gen, sep the parts are so damn expensive. Mitsu all the way
I am not an expert when it comes tovr4 vs evos but I have been in the evo and it is reallllly fast. I know the vr4 is 276 hp stock according to the gentleman's agreement but the evo is lighter. Can anyone tell me which is faster between the 2 stock machines and by how much?
@red182ek92 but yeah, that's my experience 200K plus. I always wanted one but not with those kind of miles. I'd say the answer to this mysterious low mi failure and the longevity of others is due to the same owner keeping the car for a realy long time and they like it enough to keep up on the maintainance. My grandpa could make anything that didn't self destruct last..... military. lol next time pedal to the metal!
LOL front axles get twisted? I've never once heard of that happening to anyone with a 3S. But what do I know, i've only owned them for the last 5 years. Way to be wrong with your reply.
@bloodroz it didnt go out the because if it goes it takes your motor with trust me ur luckey u put a new one in before it was to late the parts arent bad price wise but if it takes ur motor it sucks ass
dont get it, mitsu has too many problems, my vr4 is in the garage right now after running a evo9 mr which then caused a crankwalk, now its gonna cost me 2500 to rebuilt my bottom block, stick to honda im about to upgrade to a s2000 ~Roney
I really want this as my first car...for the longest time I've been a Mitsubishi fan and was gonna get the gsx, but with that engine on the 3000GT there's soo much more power I could put into it. I can't wait to own one of my own.
True that. You can buy a VR4 or TT cheap these days, but they're still a $40k+ car, with parts that aren't in high demand compared to other platforms.
Nice run. I love your VR4. keep it up man :D
@dblancer the 3000gt is only classified as a GTO when sold in asia. It is the right hand variant of the 3000gt and actually came b4 the 3000gt or the stealth. I LOVE MY TT STEALTH!!!!
And I will never look back at the Honda scene, ever.

@kestlegauthier Thanks to the fact that it's actually an import, rather than a dodge.
@evilevo420 - i'm talking about EVO 8's like in the video. I could say 1st and 2nd gen VR4's run 13 flat and high 12's completely stock, because it has happened, but im talking about the average driver's time.
There should be a spoof motivational poster that says...
"Mitsubishi GTO/3000GT & Dodge Stealth - Making mechanics out of motorists since 1990"
I'll even give you some help in your arguement, just so you'll have SOME correct information. @bloodroz If you are going to make that comparison you need to compare the GTO to the earlier school evo.
Thanks :)
@red182ek92 like I said previously, it all depends how the car was maintained before you got it. Of course after you got it as well.
@TeHwAy2b You can build an 11 sec 3S for $3,000 ray pampena has done it.. Even has the list of mods & how-to of how to do it and videos to show it's been done. It's easy to make a 3S fast... @jgmtiger Exactly, it's the driver.
@SUSOAB I find that to be pointless personally. It can only cause more lag, and won't get any more power than a good set of twins. But nothing wrong with a big single, less parts to replace when something blows and less piping to worry about, plus it looks much meaner under the hood. :p

lol I hear you man. Same with me I'm always afraid I'm gonna hear another noise on my 3000 and don't drive it hard at.
regardless a vr4 wont stay with an evo around the twisties without some amazing tires and suspension mods, and even then it would be difficult without some weight reduction. 110 feet is really good for that car, id like to see where u got those numbers if you dont mind
And you'll lose every day by an Evo just like this dude did. Evos are the shit and you know it.
You're wrong. 91-93 came with 300hp stock. 94-99 came with 320hp stock. The Gentleman's Agreement applies to Japan, not the USA. Yeah we both launched...he had 2-step so probably like 5-6k for him, and I went from about 6k. Wasn't my best run, but a good one none the less.
Gas really not bad if maintenance is at par. Maintenance will kill u though. I was making 4k month and moved up from GST to vr4 and had to sell cuz couldn't afford it. @keith91z28 yeah the VR4's are getin HARD to find under 10k so get one while you can
no matter what poeple say . us owners know vr4 is king !
@thelustyjusty "basic parts upgrades" or "bolt-on parts upgrades".
i think it came down to gearing if the 3000gt came with shorter gears it would be an even quicker car
They are both bad ass cars, I mean come one they are both Mitsu's. It really balls down to who has the deepest pockets and who can drive better. Thanks, was actually a not so great launch. VR4 made 270hp/290tq on a Mustang dyno recently, and ran a best of 12.616@106.74.
which is probably directly related to why your car has so many problems.
Correct!
@jgmtiger I came across a 92 vr4 for 4k but needs the motor rebuilt due to no compression on 3 cylinders. I'm contemplating getting it but i hear alot of people talking about getting the 2nd gen vr4 from 94 and up instead
@jgmtiger well depends if its shipped or driven. I take it you like the lt motors?
@randomradicalstuff
true, the VR4 is underrated... it would beat almost every tuner in a drag race... but the evo has just a way better chassis ... and you could modify a honda civic and it could beat both of them...
by the way i live in switzerland:)
An evo is just a vr4 on a diet. It makes a lil less power but handles and stops alot better.
that vr4 got the cleanest launch ever.
driver mod. lol
I do think that the VR-4 put up quite a fight. Especially considering it's down on HP and hugely overweight in comparison to the Evo. @8SECEVO8 I just replaced the timing belt in my stealth and it cost me 129.99 plus shipping...
@clumbzlbc Yeah im sure there are bad ones, my dsm tranny was a pos untill shep blessed it. Im still on an exeddy dual clutch and standard doing fine, this summer alone Ive had over 75 passes.
Kool Video
Dollar for Dollar the VR4 owns an evo. Not saying the Evo isn't a badass powerplant but it just doesnt have what the VR4 does.
@bloodroz really cause the last time i checked if my timing belt goes out it doesnt cost six grand to fix just sayin
IDK this a hard one to call.
why didn't you post this on a/f i noticed those rims and i was like hey i know that car did you both launch and if so at what rpm..
@keith91z28 no prob man yeah they are fun huh
it took me 5 years of purely beating the fuck out of my stealth tt to just need two new sincros
@jgmtiger interesting considering i'm fixing up a 94 z28 to sell so i can purchase a vr4
Yeah thats what I've heard haha and I hate paying for gas constantly so that may not be a good choice.
Twizted, I hate morons. =[
I'm running a 92 RT/TT, I launch ALL the time, and my drivetrain is solid, the only thing I check is my Transfer case. =P I need to buy a bracket for it.
Either way, nice try on the Evo. I've rolled stock evos in my stock Stealth.. As said before, it really all comes down to who has more money.
Twizted's launch wasn't flawless, but it was hella better then the Evo's. ;)
Cya on the forums, Twizted. =D
And as to "everytime", how do you explain my own personal 100+ 6000 rpm launches with no drivetrain failures?
should i buy a vr4 for my first car itsd only 4k but has a oil gauge problem idk wtf that means lol somewith the the gauged someone help me out
Technology huh? Power to weight? In stock form they're equals at BEST, usually with the VR4 being faster. what are you talking about? also you dont buy am evo for the drag races... an evo belongs on a race track or rally, where a VR4 has nothing on it...
stay away from the 91-93s, I bought a 95 for $3500. its my second 3000gt both 95s and both for $3500 just look on craigslist and You qill find good deals. there is a 1999 3000gt sl for sale in portland oregon or for $5,900
@bloodroz 2 extra cylinders?
nice i want 1 but probly wont e drovable much in 3 yr when i get lisence
@twizted3kgt no its the ppl that dont down shift right double clutch or get into it shift short or to late and fuckin slam on the gear when they shift shove it hard down or shove it hard up if your calm while racing youll win and your ride will last its simple
Just don't go to Autozone and buy interior paint and start painting random interior panels. The urge to do so seems strong when you're a teenager.
@keith91z28 lol i never said it was stock did i? read what i said and theres another example things arnt always what they mean to be
im about to buy my first car vr4 with 350 hp for about same price i cnt wait
Jaymobe ur rite parts are hard to get for the 3000gt an its a gas hog lol got rid of mines even the Window regulator went out got rid of it for a gto
@twizted3kgt yeah i know im tryin to get a 91 3000gt its only 2500 and has NOS hooked up
I have a 93' Vr4 and i love it, i would have no other car. yea its 17 years old but it runs like a mofo i got it up to 160mph about a week ago and scared the shit out of my buddy's that were in the car, i like the look of the 1st gen, sep the parts are so damn expensive. Mitsu all the way
who won???
91-93 are the sexiest of the 3000gt they look so exotic resemble a ferrari 348/355 am i right or am i right?
Rear axles brother, rear axles.
My grandpa could make anything that didn't self destruct last..... military. lol next time pedal to the metal!
totally..
i remember when i would shake and sweat before launching..
now i smoke whilst i do it...
evo's run a 13 flat stock my friend, unless u cant drive, then mid 13's
LOL front axles get twisted? I've never once heard of that happening to anyone with a 3S. But what do I know, i've only owned them for the last 5 years. Way to be wrong with your reply.
i thought vr4's make 320 stock?
thats all it said and yeah ur right kuzz vr4s are rely fast alot can be supras kuzz 4wd
@bloodroz it didnt go out the because if it goes it takes your motor with trust me ur luckey u put a new one in before it was to late the parts arent bad price wise but if it takes ur motor it sucks ass
cars gonna be wrecked in no time...its his first car.
...and the speed of a car is the only reason to buy one....
@KOTAK1989 Really?
dont get it, mitsu has too many problems, my vr4 is in the garage right now after running a evo9 mr which then caused a crankwalk, now its gonna cost me 2500 to rebuilt my bottom block, stick to honda im about to upgrade to a s2000
~Roney
?? I don't get it.
Americans call em 3000GT and 3000 Vr4's where as in countries like Oz and NZ a VR4 is a 4G63T powered Galant. And the 3000Gt is called a GTO :-)
so john shep runs over 1600 on stock front axles... but yea i guess they suck huh? im evo ftw but gvr4's are just as dope, just older.
@ztwntyn8 Sounds like a plan!
