The real target audience for this is airsoft milsim guys and it’s fantastic. The metal Harris clones are like $300 and can’t be programmed with CHIRP. The only concerns are that the volume knob is too easy to turn and the 40” gooseneck antennas might put too much strain on the connection. Other than that it’s a solid “good enough” at 1/3 the price of the only other replica that’s worth buying. The size difference is a bit annoying but definitely not a dealbreaker. If you’re going to design a obvious copycat at least make it compatible with 152 pouches.
In all, I concur. A hip pocket is good unless you bought the pouch and mike. If you did then you can cable the mike to your ear-pro and your almost good. At my age anything but skimpy Larping is all I can manage. I love it... And it Chirps to my UV-5R's straight across. Ruck on.

Definitely better to be a jerk than mincing words. At the end of the day it's still a Baofeng. They still lie about the specs, the waterproofing, ... People will still buy it but as reviewers, we MUST be honest.
They didn't lie about this one's waterproofing. It doesn't have any. Which is fucking ridiculous. Radio will run for a week, on one battery... But getting caught in a sprinkle kills it.

I just got mine today. $63. I got it as a shelf/wall hanger that I could pull down and chuckle at from time to time. I thought I knew what I was getting in to but I was wrong. I was honestly expecting junk but I can tell it’s a gem, a big chunk of a gem. 9.74 watts on 462, loud yet clear speaker, excellent reception, and was told it was coming in clearer on the repeater then my $600 mobile setup. I really wanted to hate this radio…….i was disappointed. Guess I’ll just keep laughing at my UV-25.

Price has gone down to 73 dollars now. From what I've been able to find out, it is a BFF8-HP, dressed up to look military. The big battery is really all that's new. I think I paid 62 for my new F8, when the old one crapped out. Still I am interested in this radio.
I didn't realise how big it is. In Chirp you can set the power level for each individual channel. I've found out it uses four 18650 cells. They also do them in beige and black. It's really cool you are producing pouches for them. I'd imagine the AR stands for Army Radio. 73 M7TUD
I may buy one after messing with four of them. They scan faster than a cheap analogue scanner and cost a little less. If I ever get my operator's license, I will have a transceiver already set! I left one of the four running for four days and it still had battery life when the owners came for them. The owners of the radios were paintball enthusiast. I am curious as to how the radios will hold out in such an environment. They did have pouch and earphone connections. But that hobby is still brutal on equipment.
I bought one through Ebay. It came with every accessory including the molle pouch which btw is fairly well made. What makes the radio a hit for me is the sound quality and the fact that it is LOUD! A great feature with hearing loss. I also like the large keybad and screen. As far as belt clips go, I've broken almost every belt clip on my other 4 baofeng radios, so for me the pouch is far superior. One last comment. The current version is 15 watts. I don't know what the real output would be, but it will be much better than the older 10 watt version.
It's actually a good radio for beginners who can't afford a better system. The biggest thing that keeps people out of the hobby is the price of radios. I started out with the UV5R and have since bought better radios but had I spent a lot of money on a radio and decided for whatever reason I didn't like it I would be out hundreds of dollars. Even cheaper radios have a place in comms
Got mine for under $70. Mine froze on a scanning freq. Nothing would get it back until I took it apart and re assembled. It's still working better than the bf-f8hp. AR152 will out scan a 8hp. Had them side by side, switching antennas positions. No contest. The AR15 will out scan the bf-f8hp with just about any antennas. I will contest your false statements any time. AR152 rules at scanning.(Chirp programed)
Greetings and felicitations. I must add one thing to your extremely well put together video. The AR-152 is a great radio. Not listed anywhere, nor is it mentioned in the manual, the AR-152 can be configured to operate in the 1.25 meter range. It may be worth the mention for people to know that it can be an amateur tri-band transceiver. I found myself very excited to figured out how to get 1.25 meters on it. I can even hear the radio pirates on 255.550 Mhz above the 1.25 band.
@@KS6DAY There is a configuration that must be changed using CHIRP. Use the drivers for the Baofeng BF-F8HP. This will allow you to do all the common changes associated with your transceiver. However, there is a page that sets frequency limits that may be altered. Not all transceivers will have the limit modifications allowed. Even fewer will actually do anything once you change the limits on the ones that do allow it. However, the Baofeng AR-152 does allow you to change it successfully. The new limits will vary somewhat from radio to radio, even of the same model. Set the VHF limits to somewhere around 128Mhz to 270Mhz. If you are a pilot, the 128Mhz will not help much. Aviation uses AM and the AR-152 is FM wide and FM narrow. You can hear some things very close up, in a muffled way. Where the new frequency ranges get interesting is, of course, 220Mhz to 225Mhz for amateur radio operators and hobbyists. The radio's amplifiers are not configured to do a good job in that range. Weak signals do not wake up the radio. However, it does work for receive and transmit in that range. From handheld to handheld, the operator I returned the radio to was very happy. He could use a few very close repeaters. The issue seems with the receive in the 222Mhz range. The transmit, though lower, is still very usable. Maybe a firmware flash may one day give this radio true triple band usage. But, for now, the improvised modification has made quite a few people happy. Take note: I only configured four khaki transceivers for this range. I do not know if the other colour transceivers can do this. Or, if it even makes any difference at all what colour they are. Expect varying results. If happy with the improvised modification, please make a video to let the masses know. I have no video equipment, save a still photograph camera.
@@KS6DAY Update: I sent a message to the paintball fellows asking about the range and clarity. The one that answered back said that they have been a mile out and still sounded clear. They use the Abbree flexible triple band antenna that is about 17 inches, or so. I did not measure it. They mentioned receive is not as sensitive as it would be in a handheld made for the 1.25 meter band. However, they are very happy with the conversion. Was the AR-152 intended to be a triple band, triple power, handheld transceiver, but the designers ran out of time to work out all the bugs? Who is to say? 73 de KBX1339 (defunct)
@@KS6DAY Have you made the conversion? If so, how do you feel about it? You can do on air tests and get responses. I can only use signal generators, dummy loads, scope measurements, and watt meters. None of that replaces an on the air exchange with another operator. I am just really curious. Not one of the four radios I converted have been returned. I was just experimenting after the setup of their radios and found something serendipitous by experiment. I think penicillin was rather found like that. When I told the paintball guys, they were ecstatic! They are happy to have tri-banders.

I just learned these have a plastic case. That is a concern as the first time you have to hit the deck I can see the thing broken. If anyone has any experiences regarding these cases or real world functionality please let me know. Until then I'm better off with the alloy cased radios I already have...which have a waterproof [misnomer] rating as well.
Got 2 and it not worth it both only put out about 4 watts on vhf tested my uv5r puts out more wattage my bf8hp is 7 plus watts don't waste your money like I did
mine came with a real nice green Molle pouch. it's an adequate radio for securing to a plate carrier, with a super long lasting battery with 18 inch abbree military style antenna, excellent range. a little heavy

A couple updates for you/viewers/buyers lol. the price right now is $70 just radio, $89 for small combo with 18" ABBREE antenna, including molly pouch, and programming cable/w CD. (I chose this one) and $105 for the full kit with hand mic and stuff. Thanks for the warning on the abbree folding memory. Also, the one that comes with the radio package fits well with no gap.

No external keyboard. No GPS. It only bears a passing resemblance to the PRC-152. As for transmit and receive mine works quite well. I am going to be doing an updated review in the next week or so.

Mine froze last night. Can't reset or unlock. Buttons only turn on the flashlight and alarm...randomly. I really liked it. Could scan side by side with a bf-f8hp and the bf would drop out but the ar152 kept receiving. Ar152 antenna is also great for LORA devices. Might just buy another one and have an extra battery and antenna. They will do 10W but only on limited frequency
Rechargeable batteries need recharge cycling. Discharge completely and recharge completely to attain maximum performance. I would cycle a new battery 3 times initially then about once a month.
The extended batteries.. I paid $20 10 years ago, it seems, and never seen in the increase in battery life. About 3 months in, I knocked the radio and battery off my truck hood onto the ground. The battery case split, and there were 3 aaa rechargeable batteries and zinc weights!
Was up till 2am last night watching this video changed my mind and sent it back will be looking into one of the others you are using. What would you recommend I'm a beginner but I like good quality and money well spent? You know what they say you get what you pay for. I live in the city limits but I do trips and I'm in the woods a lot. Not only that if the power grid goes down I wanna have something decent thank you.

What I really like is the very, very, neutral approach he has towards the radio. He describes the positives and negatives with no real prejudice. That is extremely rare today. I am trying to get him to show the 1.25 meter conversion for this radio. Hopefully he has some luck on making the conversion with the really poor instructions I gave. I would make the video myself but have no video making equipment at all. I do not even care if he gives me credit or not. It is all about the radio hobby and not about any individual. Keep a watch out for the 1.25 meter conversion he may have soon. I discovered the conversion just playing around with someone else's radio.
Very concise review as usual. I guess my first thought is Why ? I guess if you want a toy to play with, it would be a fun radio. We all like our toys. I have enough bulky things on my kit and belt already, I don't need more. When it comes to doing serious social work or just having reliable comms, I'll take my FT-60 or a VX-6 any day. I want something I trust. The AR-52's battery life is a plus, but then again, a second battery for the Yaesu takes up little space. As to the increased power, in regard to the horizon, 5 watts gets there just as well a 7 watts. Line of sight to a repeater, again, I don't see an advantage. When you look at the painfully slow scan speed and lack of memory channels, it's a no go for me. It's got Baofeng guts...nuff said. If this radio tickles your fancy, those with the most toys win.....sometimes. Thanks for the review Scott.
In my opinion this is a replica of the HARRIS PRC 152 just on a cheaper scale. Looks bad ass and was wondering if this would make a great scanner. Can you program more frequencies to this radio with CHIRP?
I bought 5 Baofeng AR-152 15W Powerful Dual Band Handheld Tactical Two-way Radio and I was trying to test the radios, so I have two radios on the same channel I transmit from one and I can see the other radio is receiving, but no sound I cannot hear any sound coming from the radio that is receiving. I have many radios and when I transmit from one radio the other radio on the same channel receives and I can hear what I am saying, with these radios, I do not hear any sound coming from the receiving radio, the radio screen indicates the radio is receiving, but no sound. Are there any settings that must be on to hear the transmission from the receiving radio or what needs to be done. This is the first time I am using this radio. Looking in the manual there is nothing that I can see. lf anyone can help will be appreciated. The radios are close maybe 20 feet or less away. Thank you.
@@MrCobb-rq8ivThe proximity between the 2 radios or the power setting on the XMIT handset may be overloading your receiving handset. Try putting some more distance between the two, or setting the XMIT HT on a lower power setting for the channel you are using for testing.

Sucks with comms headsets though. Produces a loud pop every time you do anything. Makes it unusable
A drain plug o-ring for a 2017 and up Harley Davidson fits tight around the volume knob and keeps it from turning unintentionally

Just a Baofeng UV5R in a different case. Way overpriced, typical Baofeng performance. Appealing to wannabe commandos.

UV-5xp worked for mine, for channel names. The UV5r setting in CHIRP would not transfer the channel names

I bought the ar152 The only complaint I have is it has no provisions for a belt clip. Your only choice is a pouch.

Mine froze last night.
Can't reset or unlock.
Buttons only turn on the flashlight and alarm...randomly.
I really liked it.
Could scan side by side with a bf-f8hp and the bf would drop out but the ar152 kept receiving.
Ar152 antenna is also great for LORA devices.
Might just buy another one and have an extra battery and antenna.
They will do 10W but only on limited frequency
Just another note on the Baofeng AR-152, if you program the radio using the factory software you can open up the 1.25m band.

Rechargeable batteries need recharge cycling. Discharge completely and recharge completely to attain maximum performance. I would cycle a new battery 3 times initially then about once a month.
The extended batteries.. I paid $20 10 years ago, it seems, and never seen in the increase in battery life. About 3 months in, I knocked the radio and battery off my truck hood onto the ground. The battery case split, and there were 3 aaa rechargeable batteries and zinc weights!
Was up till 2am last night watching this video changed my mind and sent it back will be looking into one of the others you are using. What would you recommend I'm a beginner but I like good quality and money well spent? You know what they say you get what you pay for. I live in the city limits but I do trips and I'm in the woods a lot. Not only that if the power grid goes down I wanna have something decent thank you.
Good review. Someone in our group bought these for us, and I'll be honest. Is it the best? Most definitely not. Is it a good beginner radio to learn on, and a cheaper alternative to see if you want to get into 1? Most definitely.

One thing i noticed , if i have my ar 152 turned to channel 10 and my uv5r on channel 10 , they are different channels.
I still like the radio mostly what I like the most about that radio I don’t have one but I’d like to get one is the antenna and you can see it really good

What I really like is the very, very, neutral approach he has towards the radio. He describes the positives and negatives with no real prejudice. That is extremely rare today. I am trying to get him to show the 1.25 meter conversion for this radio. Hopefully he has some luck on making the conversion with the really poor instructions I gave. I would make the video myself but have no video making equipment at all. I do not even care if he gives me credit or not. It is all about the radio hobby and not about any individual. Keep a watch out for the 1.25 meter conversion he may have soon. I discovered the conversion just playing around with someone else's radio.

Very concise review as usual. I guess my first thought is Why ? I guess if you want a toy to play with, it would be a fun radio. We all like our toys. I have enough bulky things on my kit and belt already, I don't need more. When it comes to doing serious social work or just having reliable comms, I'll take my FT-60 or a VX-6 any day. I want something I trust. The AR-52's battery life is a plus, but then again, a second battery for the Yaesu takes up little space. As to the increased power, in regard to the horizon, 5 watts gets there just as well a 7 watts. Line of sight to a repeater, again, I don't see an advantage. When you look at the painfully slow scan speed and lack of memory channels, it's a no go for me. It's got Baofeng guts...nuff said. If this radio tickles your fancy, those with the most toys win.....sometimes. Thanks for the review Scott.

In my opinion this is a replica of the HARRIS PRC 152 just on a cheaper scale. Looks bad ass and was wondering if this would make a great scanner.

I bought 5 Baofeng AR-152 15W Powerful Dual Band Handheld Tactical Two-way Radio and I was trying to test the radios, so I have two radios on the same channel I transmit from one and I can see the other radio is receiving, but no sound I cannot hear any sound coming from the radio that is receiving. I have many radios and when I transmit from one radio the other radio on the same channel receives and I can hear what I am saying, with these radios, I do not hear any sound coming from the receiving radio, the radio screen indicates the radio is receiving, but no sound. Are there any settings that must be on to hear the transmission from the receiving radio or what needs to be done. This is the first time I am using this radio. Looking in the manual there is nothing that I can see. lf anyone can help will be appreciated. The radios are close maybe 20 feet or less away. Thank you.
Use Chirp, copy from one to the other so they are on the same page.
@@MrCobb-rq8ivThe proximity between the 2 radios or the power setting on the XMIT handset may be overloading your receiving handset. Try putting some more distance between the two, or setting the XMIT HT on a lower power setting for the channel you are using for testing.
