  • Car Wash by Rose Royce contains the most played slap bass fill of all time. It's played by Lequient 'Duke' Jobe, a phenomenal bass player with monster slap chops.
    If you play in any disco/funk cover or function bands you will definitely have to learn this fill. It's tricky to hear clearly on the record and transcriptions are often totally wrong. So today, I'm going to shed some light on how to play this fill and give you some tips on jumping up and down the fretboard to play it.

    Thank you for the detailed explanation. As many others have confessed, I played it wrong so many times I'm not sure if I can retrain my brain and hands to do it correctly. I wrongly inserted a couple of pops, for one thing. That syncopated G to A hammer-on is the real stumbling block. I will try to over it in depth tonight. It's a great fill to know, as there aren't that many isolated bass slap features - well, maybe there are but you know what I mean.

    Thanks a million Mark. I’ve learned so much from your videos. But, I’m finally taking my bass playing to a serious direction and signing-up for your classes via online modules. Rather than just play music, I want to understand it- I cannot afford lessons to attend a Conservatory, or renown music school, etc; but I’ve decided I can still improve greatly…it’s on me to get done. Hope to transfer what I learn to six string bass so I can do my own music. Peace, my Brother. Stay well.

    I'm currently playing that in a band and making it more complicated than it is! As you say it's hard to hear on the original and there's a few different versions on RUclips 😂 Great video

    A great of practicing slap fill is by playing a repetitive 4 bar group and then inserting fills in on the final bar .

    Well that’s a bit of fun, 70’s disco, those short sequences were also used between singles played by the (illegal) pirate sea stations like Radio Veronica and Radio Caroline ..😀
    Got to dig up these vinyl albums by Rose Royce and the Rainbow train ..(younger peeps won’t have an idea what this is all about 😁😆…) .
    Another fun line from late 60’s / early 70’s ight be “ Little green bag” by bassist Jan Visser ..

    Billy Bass Nelson of Funkadelic created the part and played it on the album. The credits to the movie have his name in the credits. If you don’t know, he was the founding bassist of P-Funk, named Funkadelic, played on the first 3 lps, including Maggot Brain, played with the Commodores on the early album like Machine Gun (uncredited of course). Did lots of work for Motown in the 70’s and also brought Eddie Hazel, Tiki Fullwood and Bernie into the group

      @thomasminarchickjr.7355 Billy Bass is one of my all time favorites but I must have missed him in the liner notes with Rose Royce. Of course, that was damn near 50 years ago so I'll give myself a break. Duke was fun to watch live back in the day.
      You mention Billy's work with the Temps and of course, you know why one of his nicknames is Shakey Ground. One of the funkiest key of E basslines ever.

    To get a good slap and pop, do you need your action a little higher than normal or is it purely technique. I just can't get the hang of it, sounds like crap but I have slightly low action of about 2mm.
    Anyone?
    Great Show as usual Mark ❤

    • @talkingbasslessons
      @talkingbasslessons  3 месяца назад +2

      Your action wants to be just average. It’s all technique. I’ve got a TON of lessons devoted to slap technique on here addressing all the main issues. Just look for the slap playlist or go to Talkingbass, go to the lesson map and then click on the Slap Bass category. Everything is there, organised for you. Good luck

    Very muddy in the original mix, I thought it was more complex.
