People need to watch the interview and see Freidkin's face when Refn says "it's great", it's priceless. The whole interview is hilarious. I think Refn is more self aware than people think.
Yeah, he's just kind of awkward but also funny. The whole interview is full of good natured ballbusting between them, they both kind of know how to push each others buttons.
People always interpret refn as being a snob here when if you watch the full interview he’s clearly just trying to get friedkin riled up. They’re both just having a lil fun talking shit
@@peabody3000 I'd rather Friedkin speak his mind with no holds barred than every other celebrity who has every little comment they utter totally scripted and approved before they even open their mouths.
@@ProfessorEchoMedia ok but he's bitterly berating a colleague for not directing citizen kane. strikes me as being pointlessly toxic. and every time i see clips of him it's the same act.
No, Friedkin was not messing around. He may be making jokes but he's his substance is real. Don't try to make a narrative in your head because you like both guys and want to think something that's not there. It doesn't take away from your opinion on the movies they made if one guy doesn't like the others' movie.
I've seen the interview (that we only hear here). When you SEE it (completely, not just this snippet) you understand that Friedkin and Refn were having a great time joking at each other. Look it up. It's a wonderful interview and Refn's total respect towards Friedkin is pretty obvious.
The Refn/Friedkin interview is very entertaining and funny. It is a wonderful 90 minute overview of Friedkin’s career. I prefer it over the film ‘Friedkin Uncut’ actually. They are obviously friends and Refn ‘arrogance’ actually is gently mocking Friedkin’s early career egomania. They must have done this routine many times over dinners. The interview is a real smile getter from 2 guys not known for getting the chuckles from their work.
The thing about 2001 is it was made before we had landed on the moon, so when we landed on the moon it was like life imitating art for a lot of people.
I agree with Only God Forgives, its just an okay film. But Drive is a freaking masterpeice, The way Drive combines elements of 1978's The Driver and 1967's Le Samourai, and molds them into something new is genius.
Drive feels so mediocre if you’re actually going to compare it to Melville’s Le Samourai, lol. Lmao, even. I like Drive, but it’s not Melville, it’s not Mann.
I think Drive is a great movie, but for some reason, I feel like bringing To Live and Die in La into the conversation. Super underrated, and for me at least, a movie that stands the test of time. Citizen kane and 2001 have nothing to do with this genre.
I love Refn, and Drive is one of the most inspired films of the last 20 years, but if you even dream about putting yourself in a class with Welles and Kubrick ya need to wake up and apologize. ; )
The Dagster has spoken. Hahaha agreed, Drive is one of my fav movies of the past 20 years but yeah Refn gets a bit outlandish with his idea of himself.
@@drdickphd Definitely, makes me wonder how great of a team him and Brubaker would have been if they did more work together. I'm sure they would have made an amazing movie.
To me the test of time is the only true indicator of a great movie. He was still right in what he was saying though at that time. He didn't disagree that it was a masterpiece, but a true masterpiece holds up throughout time, not just 4 years. Now you could more easily say 'It's a masterpiece' and that will grow with time.
@@comment15My love for Drive has waned over time…it was a blip and forgotten. Fine movie, maybe Refn’s personal masterpiece, but Refn is not a master, and it doesn’t rank amongst the best.
Carey Mulligan’s character was written as Mexican and she was really miscast in Drive, which has a rad soundtrack but is no classic 🤡 And Ryan is still playing stuntmen…
I saw Only God Forgives in the theater, DRUNK. Really drunk! I watched that movie. It stinks! One of worst movie going experiences I’ve had! The state I was in was a comfort to getting through that flick.
Love Friedkin but I think you can praise a movie too much just because it holds up in the modern day. Sure Citizen Kane is fine, but it's only great in its own day. It's just a functional grand scale film now
Drive was pretentious crap. Not true violence. Not true art. A simulacra of a violent man with a great opening sequence without a worthwhile following 2nd or 3rd Act.

It’s honestly funnier that people only say that on Twitter. You can tell who doesn’t interact with humans often.

friedkin still comes off as a pompous "a-whole" ...esp since he always sounds like that

I liked Neon Demon a lot - but Friedkin is right about waiting to see how a movie withstands the test of time

should be retitled "Friedkin roasts NWR"
I saw the whole interview, both were great and remained friends.
Its just not the same without having the visual of Friedkin rolling his eyes when Refn talks about Citizen Kane haphazardly.
@Nicolas Winding Refn show respect to your betters!
He was, just not Freidkin.
People see this as Friedkin roasting Refn but I see this as William Friedkin falling for Refn trollbait.
Also take into account that he probably shot on digital so the filming process was that much easier for him.

There’s a longer discussion this is clipped from.
Funny when Gosling wears the Billy Corigan mask
Friedkin is so based, incredibly right.
I've always felt that Refn should squash the (fake) (not fake) beef by making a remake of Sorcerer.
That was sort of frustrating.

Definitely takes a lot from Michael Mann's Thief (1981) a lot too.

Why is Bronson never brought up as a masterpiece?
because it isn't
