Westminster, singing "Lux Aurumque", (composed by
Eric Whitacre). Performed in the "Petrikirche", a Protestant church (start of construction 1322) in Dortmund, Germany. The church is famous for the huge carved altar (known as "Golden Miracle of Dortmund"), from 1521. It consists of 633 gilt carved oak figures depicting 30 scenes about Easter.
The translation of Lux Aurumque is:
Light, warm and heavy as pure gold, and the angels sing softly to the newborn babe.

Perfectly timed 360.
how are these people sitting in here not absolutely freaking out.....this is gorgeous
The beauty of this piece is too much to comprehend. They don't know what they're supposed to do with themselves 😆
Fellas, amazing.
I have this tattooed on my arm!! I’ve been in love with this piece for years and years. I want this played at my funeral. Ahh!! The beautifulness of this!
This is absolutely sublime. It brings tears to my eyes to hear this.
Wonderful!!
Don't care about the noise. Still uplifting and reverent. In Vienna during the orchestral heyday symphonies, operas, concertos and theater performances were almost parties in the audience. They drank and played cards, chatted and giggled, gave directions to servants, etc. The upper balconies - you don't want to know what went on up there. Point being that few people sat silent and motionless as in a church service. Like today. Don't be so precious about classical music. It's killing it. A bohemian attitude adopted by more people will bring classical music more into the mainstream. Followed by new brilliant composers making more music for the ages.
We sang this magnificent work with the Choir of the French Army. This is a piece for man choir and it's a difficult piece and you sing it divinely Thanks ...
My god, the end! Whoever was holding that last note is a beast! I had to do that with my choir and it was like death! But it's just so seamless here! Very good.
They usally switch people holding the note, but it all sounds like one note being held. Not that it is impossible to do so but it would extremly challenging

fantastici!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've got goosebumps!!! What an incredible version!
So beautiful!
I nevered heard anything so amazing from a group of guys...I wonder how long it took them all the get all the voice parts but it's just so amazing plz do more videos like this
i love it it makes me happy
beautiful singing guys !!!
Bravissimi!!!
They probably have been wearing tuxes or at least matching clothing if it were a formal concert. This is an "impromptu" concert in a church that they knew had good acoustics.
Guys, thats awesome!!! Thanks for this morning-motivation!!! :)
This video has convinced me that this piece was actually written for an all men's chorus
I would pay lost of money to get them to sing to me as I would stay still in the middle. Thank you for this.
Umm...that's called 'emoting' and something that barbershop choruses do all the time. It makes a big difference in the sound when you do it. This is why the Westminster Chorus is not only one of the best barbershop choruses around, but one of the best period.
Amazing
a group singing is a choir. The noises are part of the ambience of where they are singing. An historic church with wonderful acoustics. Another awesome choir is Vocal Majority of Dallas. They are huge, but excellent. Check them out.
👏🏻
SHIVER!
The resonance of the tone in the male range of this piece is just fantastic! Nice treatment of the dissonance!!! They know how to exploit it and make it "shimmer"!!
1:58... Can that be Professor Thorpe? I know he is at westminster, he was my choir director in HS!
:
0:48 Just WOW!
Don't get me wrong, listening to Eric Whitacre sung by amazing singers will always make me feel like I can change the world, but aren't we forgetting that Micah from Paranormal Activity is singing in this?!?!? 1:00 mark, just LOOK AT HIM! ISN'T HE AWESOME!!!!!
I actually liked the expressive body movement.
It’s fairly natural for singers. You get so invested in this release of the soul that nothing else matters.
I'd love to know what was used to record this.
This is death, ascent to heaven, then GAWD placing a soul back on Earth.
@epic
It's a real song by real singer. You don't take the fretboard work away from jazz players, do you?
I'd very much like to know who held that note at the end
Definitely more than just one person. They're just so good at resonance matching it only sounds like one person.
What they're doing is something that's called unit singing. Usually, there is an odd amount of voices in the unit, which makes it easier to match/blend. I would imagine, that there are four voices singing the high note, so when one drops out, you still have three voices to match/blend. As each singer runs low on air, the drop out, make a mad dash for the oxygen buffet, fill up and get back to doing business (this analogy is one I learned from Doug Smeltz, former director of The Singing Buckeyes in Columbus, Ohio). All he has to do is match level and continue singing...letting the next one repeat the process.
Как я хочу быть среди них... Блядь, ну почему элементарные мечты не сбываются
The sexual orientation between the members may differ, but to my knowledge, that is not a marked characteristic of the choir. And while there may be no bona fide classically trained counter-tenors among them, the tenors still sound fantastic in their head voices. :)
There are nine people who flat-out don't like great music! They must all listen to rap.
Hey now, I listen to rap music too, but I do love other forms of music, such as Whitacre. Possibly my favorite American composer! :)
cant believe this is written in this century
They PERFECTLY nailed that chord at 0:56; the tonality, the crescendo... Good lord. You can see it on their faces too. Would kill to hear this piece performed live in this cathedral.
The acoustics in this church are amazing! The sound of male voices bouncing off marble walls has no equal...beautiful! Thanks for posting this video...much appreciated!
This is THE most perfect version of this piece. The depth of inspiration under the performance is awe-inspiring.
This is by far my favorite performance of this piece. I sit, close my eyes, and just listen. The warmth from all male voices is just stunning. Nothing else to say but pure perfection and beauty.
Perfect, almost to tears... However, the beginning camera movement/focusing is very mood dampening...
I felt the same thing. I replayed it and closed my eyes...there were tears!
Eric Whitacre shared this on his facebook page!!!! Amazing job, guys!
Absolutely amazing, gentlemen! That chord on the refrain around 3:15 is such a beautiful one. I love how it's not perfect, yet it's perfect. Thanks for sharing.
this is absolutely DIVINE. just heavenly. i adore it. possibly my favorite version of this piece
If anyone had any questions what the Angels sound like in the Kingdom of God, this may very well be a sample
WOW! KILLER ACOUSTICS! Love this rendition! This song makes great use of environmental echo, however, the camera's autofocus sound in the beginning was a little annoying though...
The chord at 3:21 literally makes me tear up it's so beautiful
Omg I got to that part too and I'm crying with chills.
2:18 had me in tears as well
It amuses me to read these comments by people who criticize the video when they have less experience than these guys. Or perhaps I’m just incredibly protective of this video and the people in it (though, I do have 10 years professional singing experience, so maybe not).
This is a special group singing in an incredible environment - the echos enhance the music and singing! We're so lucky! Thank you, Westminster Choir.......!
This is an absolutely beautiful performance of one of my favorite choral pieces, but I still think that Whitacre's pieces lose quite a bit without the true high end achieved by including female voices. It would be fun to hear a performance of this quality from a co-ed choir.
Beautiful singing but the camera noise and the breathing of the operator were very annoying, especially with the headphones on. Sorry but next time go without the tripod or find a quieter one and try not to breathe or get a better off-camera mic.
Music
@Steffan Fetchit who said what a singer has to look like? If you can invoke beautiful sounds whatsoever, through cohesion and mastered techniques, it shouldn’t matter what you look like :) They obviously weren’t doing a concert, more like travelling/touring.
Marvellous job! I did that with my former choir, Bravado and we created some magical moments too. Background noise aside, it was fabulous!!
I also like how the camera is CONSTANTLY FOCUSING...
La plus émouvante interprétation que je connaisse.
I am literally moved to tears by this. The mastery of this choir and Eric Whitacre is just unreal.
this is the tightest, most balanced and blended ensemble i have EVER heard. holy shit.
This, is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard in my lifetime. Instantly moved to tears by this, every single time I hear it. Unbelievable.
The one who keeps that sustained note is the guy in the black leather jacket at 2:30
Camera mans movement is heard on top of the music and that is annoying....otherwise amazing !
Wanna hear these guys in a little different light? Type this into the search bar of RUclips: "westminster chorus strike up the band"
Please somebody hire those guys for the next Elder Scrolls main theme.
A friend just played this for me tonight. THIS IS TRULY THE MUSIC OF HEAVEN! The music of the spheres! Of the angels! Of God's gift of music to man. Stunning! Sublime! Exalted! Magnificient! Exquisite and shimmering perfection! Unearthly...otherworldly...soaked in God. This music IS the condition of being in a state of grace.
I just ADORE from 3:04 and expecially from 03:16 till the end. Moved to tears. Great 1st tenors. Big compliment.
This is MY favorite song to sing in our Choir and you guys have don an OUTSTANDING, AMAZING job!!! I love it, and I hear it almost EVERY day!!!
HELP...I can't stop watching this video! Great.. Love the Westminster Chorus.
It's funny so see some of these guys again, I've met a few at a barbershop festival in Reno feels like ages ago. Good job on this piece brothers
wow you guys are amazing , the choral control and blend was a total joy to listen to !!
brought me to tears....wow. best version of this piece ive ever heard
I've found it really cool, including the way you presented yourself in a casual way. People in general certainly won't expect it.
@browncatt1 headphones and 1080p. Get comfy, and watch all 4. It's an amazing difference, the mic really picked up 360 degrees of that incredible room. Comment back after you've heard it that way!!
As I have performed this piece with a co-ed chorale, I was interested in hearing this done with an all male group. The sound was wonderful and the venue - perfect for Whitacres' lush and haunting chords. Great job.
at about 1:22 the two bases put their hands up at the same time good job but very funny part! ): :) :) :) :)
Their voices are awesome!! Making me cry!!! =')
This is so lovely, thanks for sharing such a wonderful song...you all are the best
第一次听全男生的lux,好好听
Beautiful!
The people in the background look either really bored or intensely concentrating. I certainly hope it's the latter.
0:49 a wild Enrique Iglesias appears
Watched this video countless times.. and the sustained high note at the end always gives me chills.
I've been intimately familiar with this piece for almost 15 years and this is by far the best performance of it that I have ever had the pleasure of witnessing. God clearly came and sat himself in the room for this to happen so effortlessly 🙏🏾
Ok that is simply amazing!!! The sensitivity of these guys is really the real deal; they got it!!
Such a peaceful song sung by an amazing group of people. Thank you so much
On the Money Guys: Superlative, and with Attitude!
Drinks on me when we meet...
B-)
Amazing choir and voices.
This needs to be redone with a quality 360° camera and a Omni cardïode microphone recorded into a h4n or h6 portable recorder, to then be sync toghetter. It would be amazing! You guys deserve your voices to be heard. Thank you again for this amazing performance. I keep coming back to this ones a month.
so. many. goosebumps.
This is devastatingly beautiful to the ears.
This is amazing! Having trouble figuring out which singers are the high tenors. There has to be more than one. The one guy in the blue hoodie at 4:15 is a high tenor. Anyone else? Confused, but love it.
Your are wonderful - all ! minmal maximal harmonic ! Thanks sharing this!
These voices and music are from heaven..... love this. It does a lot of healing for me, thank you for this gift.
3:16 is partially created C# 34.6 Hz. Sounds beautiful
Wonderful and hearttouching. THANK YOU!
This just heals my soul from any impurities instantly.
Thank you so much. This is as good as the original virtual choir version.
Idk whether i should be concerned or amazed that I've been listening to this since the summer....Soul Piercing Chords. In love with this version
Maravilhoso!
I hate the over use of the word awesome. This was AWESOME!
I live in London now and I wonder if is possible visit the chorus when they are practising. I sing in a chorus in Spain and I miss sing and hear people sing.
One of my favourites by this stunning male group, in a simply awesome venue. Even not at full strength in terms of their usual number of voices, the balance and control is still outstanding. Loved the others in this series, my only constructive thought; I am wondering is there just a touch too much reverb in this wonderful venue to do the pieces real justice?? Things did feel a little 'over connected' in the more complex pieces. Admittedly I haven't listened on headphones yet, that joy to come
Well... this was recorded on most likely the camera’s microphone while already in a church that had the most outstanding acoustics I’ve ever heard, so there’s bound to be something wonky. Regardless, to have gotten *this* good a quality of recording on a simple camera with no professional mic is amazing.
uh-may-azing...
omg do yall hear the overtones!!!! absolutely wonderful!
in a church, I think it adds great effect. Think of it as spirits moving and listenin to the music.
