Your ponds look great, even at their worst! It was really great to know the cherry shrimp survived in the cold. I think our climates are similar, and I've been thinking about putting cherry shrimp in the pond. I started a shrimp tank back in March, with only 6 shrimp, but now there are hundreds of them.
Really enjoyed this Kevin. I occasionally inspect my pond at night and most times don’t see any to at all. With warmer weather coming I hope to see some new life.
@@Ozponds I’ll look closely today - haven’t seen any of my fish recently, although had a larger dead rainbow about a month ago unfortunately. I’ll let you know!

Lovely stuff I think the small flea like inse ts on the surface were Water Crickets or Micro Water Crickets, in the UK they are Velia sp and Microvelia sp, but im guessing they will be different genera in Oz. Im very jealous of all your freshwater shrimps. We dont really get them in the UK, just a few prawns that wander up tidal rivers and amphipods we can 'freswater shrimps"!
Thank you so much for such inspiring little peeks into your paradise-like water gardens. I live in Lower-Saxony which lies in Northwest Germany and was wondering if you knew whether I could keep schrimp in the pond that I am busy building at the moment (ca. 70 cm deep). Do you know what the lowest temperatures are that they can handle? And do you know if there are any kinds of fish that are safe for tadpoles? I would love some small fish, but I feel the indigenous frogs here have the greatest priority. 😊
I had someone tell me they can keep shrimp outdoors in Ireland, not sure if they were pulling my leg. My small ponds have had very thin layers of ice, water down low was still probably at least 5C. I know small native Australian fish that do well with tadpoles but not really sure what’s appropriate for Germany, I’d assume you want something indigenous.
Hey Kev, great channel love it! Quick question if I can, I too live in Victoria and have just moved my 2 goldfish from a 500 litre patio pond to a 1200 litre pond. I now have heaps of room and was thinking of adding a group of smaller fish in to have more activity. Are there any small schooling fish that can live happily with goldfish? Thanks in advance
@@Ozponds thanks Kev, I read that white clouds can be notorious fin nippers of goldfish? Have you experienced that? My old girl is about 10 years old and about 12 inches long. The white clouds fast enough to get away? I have plenty of plants and hides

Hi, I built a pond using a bog filter and its amazing! BUT.... over a few months dozens of frogs made it their home. How can i regulate their numbers? thanks!
Hey Kev, so what do I do with my 150 gallon planted bog container filter in the winter once freezing temps set in?…..do I drain it for the winter or just disconnect it from the main pond full of water and let it sit til spring?……the main pond is also a container type and holds 400 gallons. Thanks in advance!
You can disconnect it if you need to. Some people run theirs year round, like me. If things are going to freeze and break best to shut down for winter.
@@Ozponds mine will likely freeze here in the northeast US for around 2 months. Shutting it down will be necessary but I worry about the decomposing biomass inside the bog section that won’t freeze. I would guess that before I brought the bog back on line in the spring, i would need to drain it fully and reverse flush it with some of the pond water? In line with this, the plan would be to shut it down once freezing begins keeping it full? Thanks for taking the time Kev and for such an informative channel!!!!!
