  • I rewatched Black Panther this weekend following the sad news that it's star Chadwick Boseman had died. As a celebration of his work and this film I thought I'd share with you my thoughts on the medical science we see on screen from a real doctor's perspective. We look at a bunch of trauma scenes, talk about plants used in medicine, internal blood loss and chest injuries.
    Last year I watched a bunch of movies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe (I still aim to cover them all!), you can see the playlist here:

    Really have to respect that the man even whilst going through his medical problems still continued to take part in several movies , kept it from going into public in an industry that thrives on gossip which speaks volumes of respect of anyone who knew his situation all the while still making time to visit sick children and passing on that same kind of strength that he had to them.
    If there's anyone that should be likened to a golden standard of human virtue this Man surely made it to that list.

      Actually I have a more pessimistic take on it... The media didn't know he had cancer, so they called him unenthusiastic when he was on the red carpet or on press junkets and clearly tired. Maybe if they knew, he could've been given better treatment by the industry, but I guess no one knows...

      When I had a problem with trigeminal neuralgia, not one of my doctors seemed to grasp my description of the onset (almost aura) of an attack when I termed it 'it's like the spreading numbness you get between being slapped across the face, and it starting to hurt.'
      "I'm not sure I follow. I've not been slapped like that"
      "Ever been hit one side of the face by a football on a cold day?" (Something that seemed to be an essential part of the part of the English school system I was in in the 70s)
      "Can't say I have..."
      Only my dentist got the idea... but he generally gave the impression of being a bit of a cad, back in the day.
      Thus, the good doctor has impressed me with his arm bar experience.

      To trot out an old cliche. "Black don't crack." heh
      On a more serious note, Black people, in my experience, tend to have far more interest/knowledge in skin care. Perhaps because dark skin shows flakiness/psoriasis effects more obviously than lighter colored skin. So in general, they tend to take better care of their skin, which reduces the usual suspects in physical aging, like wrinkles and lines and such.

    • @raynder5542

    • @littlered6340
      @littlered6340 4 года назад +7

      @@raynder5542 yeah, it's a fun subject. Since Sun damage causes so much aging and we have melanin, we have a head start, but black people love to (at least in my exp) call each other out when we're looking even the least bit ashy, and stuff shows. So we tend to care a lot about skincare.
      It has come out thst black people spent quite a lot of money on hair and skin care, so people have started trying to appeal to us more in recent years. I just think it's kind of hilarious none of the big name companies realised for so long.

    My father died from colon cancer as well more than 5 years ago. He was 59. I was so surprised when I heard about Chadwick Boseman, I didn't even know he was sick. It's crazy to me, because my dad's doctors kept saying that colon cancer is usually a lifestyle disease that catches up to you (although recent demographics apparently show a rise in cases for people under 50).
    To the young folks in the comment sections, don't smoke. Do not abuse alcohol. Exercise moderately and eat healthy food. Please. For your loved ones.

    • @RoadkillbunnyUK
      @RoadkillbunnyUK 4 года назад +10

      Alex case they also have to prioritise who gets an ambulance first and while a dislocated knee is very painful and absolutely needs to be seen in hospital it is not life threatening so is a lower priority. This is why you see such a wide variety of response times. Sometimes they get it wrong, sometimes people are left long enough that their condition becomes worse but thankfully these are the exceptions. The fact you were able to take your friend in under your own devices demonstrates why it was a low priority job, yes it would have been a whole lot better for your friend in an ambulance with some pain control but it wasn’t life and death. We can only work with the resources we have and even if the NHS was funded as it should be you just can’t have enough fully stocked and staffed ambulance on the road at any one time to cover any and all calls because most of the time you would be paying out to have crews sitting about doing nothing ‘just incase’.

    I've noticed in military movies and shows that when someone sustains a gunshot wound they often dump a powder on the wound in the field. Is this some sort of coagulant or disinfectant? I'd love to see you review some war movies or shows! Band of Brothers has some great scenes that you could review!

      Depending on the movie, it may have been a quick clot powder like Celox. There are a number of different types with different components, but they either just combine with the fluid in the blood to form a clot directly OR they interact with blood components to encourage the natural clotting process. Such things are not optimal for non-combat / non-emergent situations because the wound must then be cleared as part of the surgical process.

      They don't use it anymore, haven't in a decade or so, but you're referring to Quick Clot powder. It basically chemically cauterizes the wound so it stops bleeding. Very bad if you're down wind & inhaled it. Now they have something similar, but in gauze form. You pack it into the wound & hopefully it works. If not, it's the only time you'll remove something from a wound. Normal gauze you don't remove it b/c you undo any clotting, but w/the quick-clot kind, you do b/c it only works w/direct contact to the wound

    This feels very too soon tbh and pretty distasteful, would have been great in six months time but now just seems like it is riding the coat tails of a celebrity death... Hopefully monetisation is off or going to charity!

    It is intresting to see the attention to details with this fight scenes and results of injury. But it sounds like if they had consequences to T´Challas injuries he whould have this head traumas after that waterfall dip no matter how good that medecine was or thier technology. And peace to Chadwick.

    *WAIT WAIT WAIT HOLD UP PLOT HOLE/POSSIBLE CONTINUITY NOTE:* at 10:01 he's talking about Everett's damage to the mid-thoracic vertabrae, which is what Doctor Strange was talking about before he crashed his car: "35 Year old Air Force Colonel, crushed his spine in some sort of 'experimental armor', mid-thoracic burst fracture." Is it possible that when Everett returned to the U.S., he got another surgery done and the surgeons at Metro General saw the vibranium in his spine but weren't sure what it was? And the timeline lines up as well, since both Black Panther and Doctor Strange take place around mid-2016.

    T'Challa: "As you can see, I'm not dead!"
    Dr. Hope: "Now we can see here that T'Challa has done a self-diagnosis that he isn't dead. We do suggest that he should consult a medical professional rather than just rely in a self-diagnosis, especially after sustaining several injuries, drowning and hypothermia."

    The bit about the chokehold made me think of Borderlands 2 and Handsome Jack. "No, no, Jimmy, choking is something you do when you eat too fast. As I'm crushing Mister Moorin's windpipe with my watch chain, what I'm doing is actually referred to as strangling."

    I had a pnumothorax and haemothorax two Friday's ago during a biopsy on my lung. Gnarliest thing I've ever experienced. While lying in the CT scan having the biopsy I was making noises that I can only describe as some form of "Queen Of The Night" then I started feeling something pooling in my back. Thankfully, an x-ray a couple hours later revealed I didn't need a drain and felt better after a little while!
