Take it from someone who lived on the Gold Coast their whole life. New Brighton has massive potential to be a mini Surfers Paradise...Broadbeach or Mermaid Beach style suburb. It has that feel about it..to me. Just moved here and I love it. If you build it....they will come.
Sometimes I've been out on a hot summer nor'west night with perfect waves and just a few people out and I wondered why the slice of paradise wasn't overcrowded like everywhere else that's decent. But the weather isn't consistently good enough to make it a Broadbeach style suburb. Having both lived in New Brighton and within a short drive of it I have found the people are largely trailer trash pseudo-spiritualists-when-it-suits, bro's, lazy stoner hippy types and geriatrics. Business is stuffed, the mall is no investment (We can thank westfields The Palms mall for that) Sure, the houses are a bit cheaper and the cold water isn't that hard to get used to for surfing, but Brightons hopes are very dim at the moment and have been for a long time. Gentrification will be in Brightons favour but i'd say it's always 10 years away.
One of Brighton's issues is lack of flexible access - it needs more ways of getting in and out. This problem is clearly seen when people are trying to leave after Guy Fawkes celebrations. 1) A ferry service in and out of Brighton - to Sumner and other places like Lyttelton. There is already a ferry service to Diamand Harbour from Lyttelton, why not do the rounds? Some would ride on the ferry just for the novelty and it could be a big tourist hit, particularly on November 5th. 2) A road bridge from South Brighton to Shag Rock. Shag rock is all but gone so there would be no real loss if it was removed completely. 3) A superhighway to North Beach from the central city.

I do hope that the extra development of New Brighton has been achieved, as it is a lovely place to be for a day, few days or to live. Kia kaha Kiwi.
A Mcdonalds on The Pier.
lmao, and trash the ocean more like everyone trashes the surrounding mall area with empty cartons of shitfood. To hell with mcdonalds.
