Crossed fingers! I just got a carbon frame which I have thrown all the stuff from my old bike on, it would really benefit from getting an actually worthy groupset!
+Maroon571 Actually as a big big fan of this channel, I'm very comfortable about Si touching the ETap.And I love when Simon puts the hat in the package like when the time he put it in a Canyon bike box that was about to ship out to someone. Such a nice thing to do!
+Nige Johnson Yea, when I saw how big the box was I expected to see a crankset, cassette, bottom bracket, chain, and brakes. But alas we get none of that.
Guys, no mater how you look at it, curse about it, lust over it, hate on it, or even wish you could blow your roll on it, this is the most advanced gear to happen in cycling since clipless pedals. Campy and Shimano concentrated their efforts on "electronic" groups. A Wireless group set is really something else!
+SkamGame I'd prefer seeing cycling tips rather recognizing marketing tricks on this channel. I know nothing about that u-therapy, but viewers are lured into being direct advertisement targets from GCN apparel store and, may be, via spam mails from sram and whoever purchases cyclists' emails. Targeting audience increases ROI in advertisement.
Hey GCN, the eTap shift signals are transmitted and received using SRAM's proprietary wireless protocol known as AIREA and NOT via 128 bit encryption. The encryption is rightly used to prevent it being hacked but is not the same as bluetooth, ant+ or wireless which are transport mechanism over which the encryption runs
Color Scheme will match my bike and GCN kit perfectly. Can't wait to try it out 😝plus thanks GCN for the answer with regards my helmet purchase. Great choice. Great videos great channel
Not to nit pick* but 128bit AES is an encryption algorithm, not a wireless transmission technology. The actual wireless technology is called "Airea" by SRAM. Sounds like a basic radio that is not on the crowded 2.4GHz spectrum. *In bike terms this would be like referring to the bearings in a hub as if they were the whole wheel themselves, just saying.
Bloody hell, I reckon it will be easier to win Simon Richardson himself for the weekend over the chance of being the lucky winner of this etap! Fingers crossed for both maybe?
What's the best crankset to go with this groupset? Standard Red 22? Damn, and then there's the new frameset, wheelset, bars, stem, BB, saddle, seatpost I'll have to buy. And you can't just whack eTap on any old thing. Hmm, better give the bank a call about that overdraft limit.
Wunderbar! However, I would hope the whole set is supported by SRAM or third parties for its' expected operability lifetime. The MTTF will undoubtedly be different for each component due to all those moving parts and systems. Would be a shame to find that 2 years later you had to bin the whole set because you could no longer get hold of replacement batteries or any single component.
Because it took 5 years to design and refine the groupset before it hit the shelves and because it takes a lot of people to make (carbon is very labour expensive).
+pretendersurrender A niche product that will be enjoyed only by early adopters capable of paying the premium for it. It's like buying a VR headset now: too early for it, but it might be the close future.
Even if this is a ripoff of unbox therapy's format, I can't complain because what are the chances of unbox therapy unboxing bike stuff? That's right. Don't complain. Keep these videos coming, GCN.
well it's not rlly a "rip-off" because it's not like Unbox Therapy copyrighted the setup nor is it extremely unique to have a white surface and a colored wall of choice, with good lighting. I mean Unbox therapy isn't the only guy on the world who has done that, nor is he the only who is allowed to. also si is somewhat sweating, Lou at Unbox therapy doesn't sweat in his vids. ;)
+Chris Ruisch if you were any kind of man, you'd already have the girl of your dreams, and she'd be able to spin and would most probably buy you the eTap to put on your dream bike. You, i dare say, will ever have that experience
At 2.08 into the video Si says the system uses 128bit AES encryption. Yes this protects the system from being hacked as it means the messages between the devices are adequately encrypted, it doesn't however say anything for the conduite used to send the messages. If it doesn't use wires, Wifi, Bluetooth or ANT+ it must still use something to send the messages between the devices... Does anyone know what?
+Darren Potter Yes that's right Darren, I noticed that too. A whole pile of marketing tripe was heaved about the place with this. You can have 128 but encryption with a couple of tin cans and a piece of string if you're patient enough! Nothing against GCN or Simon, they're just regurgitating the BS that's apparently provided by the company. Cut the crap. Cut the BS excess packaging. The public aren't as stupid as some companies seem to think (at least not the ones who can actually afford to buy kit like this). Instead just provide an honest and reliable product at a realistic price, and let the product sell itself.
Pete F I don't think it's BS, I think Si probably didn't know what 128bit AES is and therefore probably didn't know he completely missed something in the description. The packaging (albeit rather large) is quite attractive and seems to hold the various component quite nicely. I'd be just as happy as Si if I had a box like that to open.
+Darren Potter It uses the same portion of the radio frequency (RF) spectrum that WiFi, Bluetooth and ANT+ use. This spectrum is explicitly UNregulated precisely to encourage innovative uses. The way these technologies avoid interfering with each other while using the same frequency band is by using novel encodings which make messages from any other technology not valid and hence ignored. It’s a bit hard to comprehend just how much “bandwidth” or “space” or just plain information transmission capacity is available at these frequencies. It is in fact impossible to get enough bikes together within the signal range of these devices to exhaust the capacity of this band of frequencies. Another way of thinking about it is that what’s required of a system of this sort is effectively infinitesimal in comparison to, say, an audio data stream going over Bluetooth or WiFi. Note, too, that while encryption mostly prevents malicious control over the device (128-bit encryption is meager by today’s standards and would not cut it in an online business setting but is probably fine for this purpose), nothing can prevent “jamming,” or the use of a device that generates an overwhelmingly powerful signal in the target frequency range that keeps the devices from detecting their own signals. All that such jamming could do is prevent shifting.
2:04 That's a pretty incorrect statement. AES encryption is used to encrypt any signal, including WiFi. SRAM is using a proprietary communication method which they are calling "AIREA". Source: www.sram.com/sram/road/products/sram-red-etap-shifters#tech
My parents just bought me a new chain and some other bike stuff for my birthday, this could really spice this year up if i'd get this :D altough I'd have to change chain again since it's shimano :-( But I think they'd understand (plus my father would get my 105 groupset so he wouldn't complain at all)
The biggest thing that puts me off of the SRAM eTap is infact that it's wireless. I've used too much wireless gear at 2.4GHz (which the SRAM eTap also seems to use) to trust proprietary designs on the spectrum. It's possible the SRAM is better, especially considering how much it costs, but just the thought of trying to switch gears multiple times just to end up with the derailleur ignoring it and possibly at the end switching all the way is really depressing. I wonder if a steel frame would cause intermittent connection issues on it.
This is r/c plane and car tech that's been around for a bit , but not cheap either. Good application on road bikes and executed excellently
What an aesthetically pleasing groupset! Love it!
10/10 would eTap this groupset
Si reminds me of myself opening loads of Christmas presents as a child. I guess it is as exciting as it is.
Don't think anything makes me happier, love this channel.
if you order this on amazon, it arrives on it's own palette in an 18 wheeler
This is great stuff! Simon should do more of this!
Thanks for putting your fingerprints all over my new eTap, Simon!
The studio reminds me of unbox therapy
haha ikr
+Andre Lopez Oh you don't say?
+Andre Lopez that is probably intentional
of course its intentional lol
probably He knows Unbox therapy
Simon! Get your grubby hands off my groupset!
+Scott Dickey It's mine, keep ya mitts off it !
by the way you guys should engrave it or something so it's a one of a kind thingy, makes is really special :)
agreed
Crossed fingers! I just got a carbon frame which I have thrown all the stuff from my old bike on, it would really benefit from getting an actually worthy groupset!
That is the coolest groupset ever. WOW.
Si I hope you washed the WD40 off your hands before fondling all the new e-Tap kit!
Having Simon touching the Red Etap makes the Red Etap make it even better!! lol
+Maroon571 Actually as a big big fan of this channel, I'm very comfortable about Si touching the ETap.And I love when Simon puts the hat in the package like when the time he put it in a Canyon bike box that was about to ship out to someone. Such a nice thing to do!
Have a frame, the last two years, money was short for finishing the build, this might help!
Is it me or is the box for the firmware dongle a slight overkill?
+Nige Johnson Yea, when I saw how big the box was I expected to see a crankset, cassette, bottom bracket, chain, and brakes. But alas we get none of that.
+William Keys You do if you pay for it.
+1AmericanInAsia BAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHA
+Nige Johnson Nah that would throw off the whole feng shui.
I'm getting an @UnboxTherapy vibe in this video...nothing wrong with that, this groupset deserves it :)
Guys, no mater how you look at it, curse about it, lust over it, hate on it, or even wish you could blow your roll on it, this is the most advanced gear to happen in cycling since clipless pedals. Campy and Shimano concentrated their efforts on "electronic" groups. A Wireless group set is really something else!
sounds stupid, but i also want wireless brakes:)
+komer novosjolov Why not just cut your brake cable and ride down a big hill? ;)
Not sure if you guys know... the whole studio set-up & music in the background is a direct copy from UnboxTherapy.
Bring out Lewis!
+LisaPet Would you prefer we made FREE videos for you without any way of making money Lisa? Sadly running a video channel is not a charity.
+Global Cycling Network Also - the terms and conditions for this competition are available from the link.
+Global Cycling Network I love it when you own people like that who ever wrote that is a badass
+LisaPet you don't have to watch it or enter.
Even Si's hair is excited about it!
seriously... this was THE item that i really needed. fingers crossed x.X
A special kind of brilliant GCN
Hey GCN, the eTap shift signals are transmitted and received using SRAM's proprietary wireless protocol known as AIREA and NOT via 128 bit encryption. The encryption is rightly used to prevent it being hacked but is not the same as bluetooth, ant+ or wireless which are transport mechanism over which the encryption runs
For only one of us it's "Win a SRAM", for others, it's "Get a SPAM" in the mailbox
Nice groupset, BTW.
Forget the group set I want the hat but, the etap would be a nice touch.
i don't know about anyone else, don't get me wrong an upgrade to the sora on my allez would be great, but that GCN hat's what I'm entering for!
This is awesome a cycling unbox therapy!!
They are absolutely pretty
Awesome set of components
I love seeing new technology!!
who won this lovely group?
Color Scheme will match my bike and GCN kit perfectly. Can't wait to try it out 😝plus thanks GCN for the answer with regards my helmet purchase. Great choice. Great videos great channel
Any brake callipers or just the cables? Ultegra and etap don't go so I'll have to buy SRAM red callipers when I win !!
omg! tried these in friends buje and they are so reliable. these would be great on my cube, even better if I had them on the 19th for my birthday!😜
Great contest, but no SRAM Red calipers?
If I won I'd have too much fun making the rear derailleur 'dance' on the table to put it on my bike!
Why doesn't eTap include the breaks? Seems like it would make sense to include them, but I'm assuming safety is an issue if the system fails?
This is really cool, I didnt know this existed!
Already looking for a proper frame now!
I though Lewis will jump in any minute! Anyway nice way to do a competition :).
this is all good and all but what do you do after an EMP blast ?
"carry bike to nearest shelter ?"
Not to nit pick* but 128bit AES is an encryption algorithm, not a wireless transmission technology. The actual wireless technology is called "Airea" by SRAM. Sounds like a basic radio that is not on the crowded 2.4GHz spectrum.
*In bike terms this would be like referring to the bearings in a hub as if they were the whole wheel themselves, just saying.
just imagine getting that email. I would cry.
6.22 gnc boxing, that's something we want to see !
I like the gcunboxing video hope to see more good stuff like this, you can unbox some garmin devices and accessories power meters etc
I had to call for the cold spoon after seeing that!
Who ever wrote the comment from GCN should get a gold star! U made my day! Luv GCN! 😄👍🏻🚴🚴🚴 GCN 1, Haters 0
Bloody hell, I reckon it will be easier to win Simon Richardson himself for the weekend over the chance of being the lucky winner of this etap! Fingers crossed for both maybe?
ohhhh...work of art....
so how does whoever is doing the contest entries treat multiple entries from the same person?
What's the best crankset to go with this groupset? Standard Red 22? Damn, and then there's the new frameset, wheelset, bars, stem, BB, saddle, seatpost I'll have to buy. And you can't just whack eTap on any old thing. Hmm, better give the bank a call about that overdraft limit.
Such excitement. It's like Simon on his wedding night. But will his wife's batteries be interchangeable?
That Dr.Frankenstein impersonation deserves an Oscar
I'd love to have a set that's worth more than my bike. Thanks so much for the giveaway!
Looks sweet! That is all.
How much of the cost went into all the bloody packaging??
Great vid, looks like a sweet set up.
this video was very Unbox Therapy-esque. but as usual great stuff
wow this is the most amazing GCN Contest so far hope i win because i just broke mine and need to buy a new one.
Can we have a video mashup of Simon's gasps when he opens each box?
Can you explain the reason why this groupset (not only sram actually) are so expensive?
+pretendersurrender Bike industry and sponsors.
+pretendersurrender It's new, that's why :D
Because it took 5 years to design and refine the groupset before it hit the shelves and because it takes a lot of people to make (carbon is very labour expensive).
+pretendersurrender A niche product that will be enjoyed only by early adopters capable of paying the premium for it. It's like buying a VR headset now: too early for it, but it might be the close future.
In comparison to high end eps groupsets from Shimano or Campagnolo it's quite cheap.
I'm up for GCBoxing, which presenter is also a flyweight?
How do youchange the 2032 batteries in the handsets, do you have to srcew them of the handlebar???
This feels like Christmas already
Good luck to everyone
Even if this is a ripoff of unbox therapy's format, I can't complain because what are the chances of unbox therapy unboxing bike stuff? That's right. Don't complain. Keep these videos coming, GCN.

and I do respect ur opinion, and understand that u said u can't complain. ;)
Would definitely beat my Shimano Sora groupset!
Is this waterproof what if it rains while you ride
I really want to get that.....
Aes encryption is not wifi, but it works over wifi or blue tooth
Dat set!
Can you lock the batteries against easy theft?
When and where are you going to post the results;-)?
If you had to choose, bike of your dreams or girl of your dreams
what kind of groupset would you put on ??
( probably found my answer right here)
+Chris Ruisch if you were any kind of man, you'd already have the girl of your dreams, and she'd be able to spin and would most probably buy you the eTap to put on your dream bike.
You, i dare say, will ever have that experience
+Women's Cycling Network.
that would be even better of course
Did you guys ever announce the winner? 😄
I need this Sram set so bad! Just destroy my bike lately😔
where can we find the winner
If they hadn't spent so much on packaging design, maybe they could lower the price.
only like 30$
Probably.
Joshua Lim I'm sure that packaging designers get paid a lot more than that, but you do realize I was kidding, don't you?
+Timothy Fish And shipping cost will be high because of these huge package.
+Timothy Fish yea, it was kinda ironically funny lol
What's with the enormous boxes for everything? Looks like half the development budget went to fancy packaging design..
This really feels like unboxtheraphy
If that is the size of the box for part of a groupset, I can't imaging the size of the full set.

Wow, and a GCN Hat! OK, I'm in. Can I get it in Green?
"Simon says" ...give this eTAP to this contributor.
You guys just rockkkkkkk
Si, please stop playing with my groupset!! #bigbigwinner
The chances of getting this is so slim but it would be great😎😝😜
HAHA. The well-known wireless communication standard: 128-bit AES encryption :-D
My 2014 SRAM Red shifters come in at 127g each?
Since when does a groupset not include a crank, BB or brakes and a chain?
When are the results going to be released
Sram should have included an extra button on the shifters to change computer screens like 9070.
This looks so nicee
Thats one epic prize :)
