I've spent a considerable amount of time on RUclips watching these kinds of videos and I believe this channel is the best by a significant margin. The demonstrations are patient, reasoned, and thoroughly explained. The topics are--like cleaning rags and laying drop cloth--are thoughtful and frequently overlooked. And I'm not bombarded with ads or incessant reminders to "like and subscribe." Thanks for sharing your expertise.
great explanation - I have watched other videos and hear "get it to the consistency you want". Well, I am watching the video because I don't know what I want it to be like. You say what to look for and why! thanks again! :)
🦋this video was PERFECT! This was my first time using this substance and your video taught me in one watch! I mixed it like a champ and impressed myself! Thank you thank you thank you! Great teaching style!🦋
Im loving the videos so far, your a great teacher. I've recently started using quick set and mixing it right was my issue, Thank you kindly for this video.
ive been mixing it wrong doing repairs at my house. thanks for the vid! btw way Warsaw is an awesome town. i remember a restaurant with volleyball and cornhole outback and amazing food. great town. id like to go back.
Very nice. I have been using lightweight mud right out of the premixed tub for all of my repairs. I think I will start mixing my phone quickset mud for my tape repairs. Baron painting Howell Michigan
In my opinion. Water first, powder second. Runny mud produces smoother mud rathen then starting with a thicker mud. Add more powder to thicken and serve.
Brian Link I am glad that works for you Brian. That has not worked for us in the past, but has created more lumps and seemed to take more time trying to guess how much powder to add to get the right consistency.
You could do this by simply measuring you powder, then measuring your water. It will probably take several tries, but you should get your mix in under 6 tries.
💥Thanks for the great info. I just mixed some 45 like you did to the same consistency and it hardened up in a bucket in about 15 to 18 minutes just after I finished applying my first pan and was ready to reload with more. I mixed about two pans worth and had to throw the rest away. Do you know what I’m doing wrong? It’s not the first time that the mix set way faster than expected.
Maybe your water is too warm. Use very cold water. Colder the better or use 90 mix instead. You can shorten the work time by using warm water but you can't really lengthen the time.
@@strangerland9791 it was cold water from the tap. I’m a contractor of 40 years and I’m so baffled and frustrated seeing how fast it keeps setting. Are you not supposed to use a power mixer? I start perfectly clean every time.
@@Jimmy_Cavallo I am guessing power mixer will probably raise the temp due to how fast it mixes the water and powder. Probably slow mixing using the knife will not raise the temp. Of course if you have to mix a lot, I guess use slow speed and try to mix a bit runnier initially? Like I said, I usually just use 90min. and it starts to harden up pretty quick. I would mix runny and by the time I get done at the end (like 20-30 min later), it becomes pretty thick like PB consistency. Try using ice cold water (Put couple of bottles of water in refrigerator - not actual ice) and see if you get longer work time.
@@strangerland9791 Thanhs. I’m just so baffled being how many years of experience I have in the trade. I’ve mixed them tossed half out because it set so quickly
Try 90 minute. It does not set up so fast. Also, add water sooner throughout the mixing process rather than mixing until the water is gone. That is when the chunks form. Also, make sure you are really working your putty knife into the bottom of the mud pan to get any powder that is down there. Some folks like to put some water in first, but I have not tried that.
I have never measured. It becomes second nature after a half dozen tries. That is a good idea though. One could simply by measuring cups figure this out.
Great, but you do not say how much water to add. You just throw some in direct for spicket. How much was that. Easy for someone that has done it a hundred times.
Good point. Add water until you have a pudding consistency basically. You could practice with measuring cups of powder and water and come up with your ratio.
thanks for the good demonstration - never would have thought of that. It's like mixing icing or gravy!
Becky B Hope it works well for you.

My pleasure. I am glad they were helpful. I have about 80 more under our Playlist titled Painter Training

Awesome!
This approach really resonated with me. Got great results. Thanks!
Great to hear!

Brian Mowers Sounds great. Hope it works well for you.
New to all of this - so new it’s embarrassing haha - but this is very helpful! Thanks!
Good man, thank you!
My pleasure!
thank you so much. it help me a lot.. thanks again nice video.
Glad it helped.

Yea does take more time. For some reason today at work was thinking about that while mixing up some 20. But hey if it works it works. Great vid btw
Thank you for the video. Very helpful and easy to understand!
Glad it was helpful!
I wish the instructions gave you the amount of water to powder for accurate mixing. Not guessing little by little.
You could do this by simply measuring you powder, then measuring your water. It will probably take several tries, but you should get your mix in under 6 tries.
Thanks. Just started my own painting company and have to fix a patch.
Had no idea what I was doing before this
Can I mix sand with Readymix and shoot it with my machine to do knock down texture
No, I would not do that.
Thank you!
You bet.

Switch to 90 minute and try that.
If only all foreman would take the time to explain this simple process. Beats getting yelled at, all while they don’t explain a damn thing 😂
Glad it helped you.
Wish I had seen this before I mixed a big batch in a bucket. I would up with a 10# block of compound.
Glad you found the video.
Watch 1:35 to 3:30 several times and you'll be fine
Good observation.
Cake mixer in a cordless drill!
Never tried one.
At the opening you resemble Bob Ross😂
Ha ha! I like that guy.
My mixture always hardens too fast and turns into peanut butter consistency, with lumps in it. Usually within 6 minutes it's unusable for me.

Ratio water to powder?

Website says 3 to 1. I always eyeball it like he does.
Should've watched this video prior to trying to mix a whole bucket of 20 min drywall which hardened in minutes in the bucket...

Use a paddle bit mixer
I have heard of these but have never tried one.
I think I found my problem
Glad this helped!
Never Hold A Cold Hard Mud Pan Again !
Amen!
It works better to start with water in first, gets creamier and less chance of lumps.
hairburger62 Glad that works for you. See my reply to Brian.
