Wolves were eliminated everywhere in the Lower 48, except where I grew up in NE MN and Isle Royale MI. If you ever want an eerie experience, nothing tops watching the Northern Lights while listening to the wolves howl. After passage of the Endangered Species Act mandated reintroduction of wolves to the Lower 48. The first wolves in Yellowstone were imported from Canada in 1994. Of course, even if the NE MN population had been extirpated, the US would have had wolves-after all, Alaska is part of the United States.
