I've unfortunately had to mute a portion of the video around the 8 minute mark because of how predatory the copyright system RUclips has in place. Much isn't lost, thankfully, but it's still annoying af.
games like valorant and r6 are fun to me but counter strike will always be my favorite, and this match is the one that got me into it. The way people were crying in happiness, the way stewie had 3 bullets to kill 3 people, the way the longest standing member of c9 got the final kill, the way it broke records and got eyes on the game in a time where it’s future popularity wise was in question, allowing valve to release updates throughout 2018 and grow the game further. it was perfect
It truly was the perfect story with the perfect ending. A lot of long time players recognize this, but because I love the story so much, I had to share it with those not in the loop.
CS is just so natural. Its simple and clear cut. All about using the same tools your opponent has and finding out who is better. No other fps really does it
The most iconic counter strike clip in history will forever be the crowd screaming send them home. It gives me chills and tears of joy every time I see it. Great video bro
Also I don’t want to be a c.unt but faze didn’t win the last major it was outsiders/Virtus Pro. FaZe just won pro league, and since they won 4 tier 1 events in the past year, they got a grand slam which is equally as impressive. Only 4 teams have ever been able to win them in CSGO history (The teams are Astralis, Team Liquid, NAVI, and now FaZe)
I was in Boston for this tournament and watched it in person, but watching this video you made me feel like I was watching it for the first time all over again. Very well done.
I can't believe it's already been 5 years since this happened. I remember watching the game live tearing up when skadaddy gave his interview. I'm glad I discovered your channel that was a fantastic video.
Generally I have zero interest in FPS games but I was legit on the edge of my seat cheering. I swear Dev could play or narrate anything and have me hooked!
I had the privilege of witnessing the 2018 Boston Major live, and it was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. My heart was set on Faze winning, but I found myself inexplicably thrilled when C9 emerged victorious. As a Brazilian who had attended the Furia vs Navi match in 2022 with a wild crowd, I can say with certainty that nothing compares to the rush of emotions I felt during that fateful CSGO match in Boston. In my opinion, it was the greatest game of CSGO ever played, bar none. The memory of the ground shaking beneath my feet as the entire crowd erupted in pure joy after Stewie's solo defense of B on Inferno remains seared in my mind. I know I'll never forget it.
Respect to you brother for speaking the truth. Furia is a team I can see someday having a moment just like this, the EU crowd still doesn't give them the respect they deserve but they've been on that steady climb much as C9 was before Boston it's only a matter of time.
@@Naraku-no-Hana-WE I mean, Brazil already had 2 majors years before NA got theirs but the champion playing in front of the home crowd is what really made Boston so special, moments like these come down to a lot of coincidence and luck and not only skill. Who knows when we're gonna get another brazilian major and then again we have to pray for a brazilian team, most likely Furia (but who knows now with CS2), to be in a good enough shape at that specific time to be able to fight for the trophy.
I respect you just letting the audio play out during C9’s Victory. They deserve that! But I really wish you would do that more often throughout the video. It’s very difficult to think of clever ways to provide explanation for such high level play, without spoiling the outcome, or ruining the tense ambiance. I think being silent and just letting the gameplay speak for itself is something Summoning Salt and other esports lore creators do very well.
Do you know of any other good eSports lore creators? I could argue that IEM Cologne 2022 grandfinals of NaVi vs FaZe rivals the Boston major grandfinals. Especially since it is the highest level of counter-strike ever played.
The main selling point of the C9 Boston Major run was the story the games and plays themselves weren't that great if you compare them to modern day CS like Karrigan calling the rotate way too late but no major run has ever had a story like C9 did in 2018 other than Gambit but Gambit won a relatively weak major in my opinion while C9 defeated what was the greatest team ever at that point I mean Olaf,Niko,Guardian,Karrigan and Rain are arguably all top 30 player of all time while 3 of them have an argument for GOAT status and were at one point or another the best player in the world. While Faze and Navi were just the 2 outright favorite battling it out.
I fully agree NaVi v FaZe was some of, if not the highest level of counter-strike ever demonstrated in a Major. There's just too much lore behind the C9 and FaZe matchup to say this wasn't the most emotionally charged, and impactful game ever played. Glad we could both enjoy this banger video regardless :D
27:32 on the right holding the Skadoodle sign. Can’t believe the Boston Major was 5 years ago, crazy how time flies. Some of my best memories were made there. Front row seats, watching Cloud9 defeat FaZe for the first ever NA win. Can’t get much better than that. Also went with Cloud9 winning for my pick-ems and still have that sweet gold Boston 2018 pin to remember it by. Thank you for making this video and letting me relive it all again!
I was in the stands that day. When C9 lost Mirage, I truly thought it was over. Faze was going to win their first major with a team that’s massively OP as I expected teams to spend a lot more into rosters that are sparse with talent, but little with cohesion and nationality. The last part is what united C9 obviously, nationality. An all American team. Cohesion that day was something special. There was no ego, no dipshit plays, and with a culture that’s fun and competitive. Winning Overpass was a shock. Even with the score line C9 produced in that map. Inferno remains a dream to me as I remember Karrigan wide ass peak on Stew to save Faze in overtime. In short, C9 came back and won. The crowd was loud and NA CS won that day. Amazing video! You earned yourself a subscriber!
Haha, Faze.. the clan with so many disgraced cheaters and even a Crypto scam that netted them ~$80,000 that was supposed to go to charity.. If they sunk that low as one of the "big names" imagine what all the rest are doing.

I was in my fraternity house watching this game w my brothers who had never watched cs before but just based off how simple cs is they understood the game pretty fast and was just as hyped watching it as I was. The plot armor was too real for NA that major EDIT: Forgot to mention one of the brothers is a childhood friend of Tarik’s and we’re from where Tarik is from
Amazing video man, thank you for taking your time to make this! I have fond memories of Jan 2018 and I'll never forget watching this live as a 17 yr old CRYING out of pure joy bc my favorite team finally won the major. This game will always have a special place in my heart and I'm so glad to still be able to feel the same range of emotions watching this 5 years later
As much I do admire the passion, excitement and effort, I really think that you could have refined this so much more and ultimately what ended up staying with me from this wasn’t what happened in the video but how much better this story could’ve been told
@@urgamecshk that type of thing wasn’t too much of a put-off but it was more starting the video with an explanation as though the audience had no knowledge of CS (perfectly okay) but then jumps straight to pop flashes and things without explaining it. And the timeline was fuddled too, too much time, to put it bluntly, fanboying over players that didn’t even play the tournament and then skipping right over more relevant players like Slemmy. The enthusiasm is definitely there, and I do believe if the creator spent more time planning the structure and refining it he could’ve definitely made a fantastic video
this video was absolutely brimming with your passion. thank u. if i may, i would really appreciate a remake, a watered down version but with all the main points still, (less of individual members' highlight clips, and cs:go mechanics explanations, etc.) to fit into maybe a 15-20 minute version? just an idea i think many would enjoy.
First off, thank you so much! I appreciate your positivity. Secondly, many videos exist already compiling this game specifically so I dont think I'd ever redo this video like that. It's about the journey to me, not the destination
This video was so in depth, it brought back so many memories of watching this live and the emotional roller coaster that it was. Thanks for the great video!!
literally i miss those esports days, am still remember betting all my skin into faze when faze face c9 at eleague 2018, i lost all of my kniv lmao, for a highschool student that money literally pretty damn huge aamount of money but yeah that's how my life was back in the days, cs always be my favorites
I like how you really went in depth about the history of csgo esports. As a person who has only played csgo for a couple of months, I clicked on this video only expecting to hear about the best csgo esports game ever played. The fact that you went above and beyond by explaining the esports history and all of csgo's popular moments is amazing. Overall, this is one of the best csgo youtube videos I've ever seen. Keep up the great work!
You aren't the only one who thought they were the curse when watching C9 in that tournament. I kept tuning in and they would start losing and then I would tune out and they start winning
dude, the fucking emotions and hard work you put into making of this video, we felt all of that. Great video, loved every bit of it. I saw the match live myself and you brought everything back!
It's the beautiful game. Counter Strike is my baseball. Constant competitions in the pro scene means you can always find some kind of high level games going on. Stats galore and interesting storylines. I love this game.
This match is one of my favorite memories growing up. My friends and I were all in discord going crazy throughout the entire match. Will always be grateful to the c9 players for giving me that night. It was something special.
Amazing video, I LOVE the clear passion you have for the entire thing. I'm not from NA, I'm not super into that scene, but I love seeing the story you built. Great work :) One slight missed opportunity I feel: you could have gone for a great fakeout ending with Stewie's missed ace during OT1, he was literally one bullet away from winning the major there.
well said and shown dude. CS will forever echo in eternity at least mine and i’m damn sure will evolve over time but this game will always remain frozen in many years ahead as it did since it started in 99. GODSPEED.
Even for me as a non American i was on the edge of my seat watching that game 5 years ago and this just brought up all that excitement back up, and to this day i still boot up Counter Strike pretty much every single day, cause Counter Strike is so much more than just a game at least to me it is. What an amazing video, enjoyed every single second of it.
I'm glad Valve uses the casters they use, cause for people not really knowing the game the reactions from others gives them a sense on how insane this really is, thousands of people, best players in the world, you're average 3k is a 3k, a 3k at a major, now THATS a big deal, and the casters let them know that
If you're willing, keep making content like this. If you're not you have made a fantastic video about one of my favorite major finals of all time and I hope you keep making amazing videos like this.
I love the way that you introduce each new great player like an anime villain or a big MMO boss, showing off what they can do before putting them up against our plucky underdogs
I thought "oh wow that video is way too long", but I am writing this comment now after watching all of it and it was 100% worth it, such a beautiful video and a big kudos for your work and bringing together all those clips to deliver this master piece! I was watching this match rooting for Faze back then and you just let me experience the same match over from a completely opposite view, thank you :)
i remember watching this back in 2018. i cried tears of joy for probably an hour. and you said it best, i can go back to that match, knowing the outcome, and still get the same emotions
I feel like 'Greatest game ever played' is kinda biased. Specially after Navi vs FaZe at cologne 2022. On my biased opinion I loved LG x TL with the coldzera jumping awp, shutting down s1mple and the NA fans going quiet. + 15x9 comeback + first major finals for Brazil (it was first map but still) + all insane clips from the map.
loved every second of this video, ever since ive grown up i havent felt this kind of passion about video games in a while and this may have revitalized my love for cs
I wish you didnt oversell Skadoodle he literally only showed up in the final but to be fair thats where it counted the most. In all honesty Ska held the team back with his poor performances up until the major final. Stewie even said during this very major run "him or me" thats how bad it had gotten.
Great Video so far, but a few misconceptions on the major stages on @32:40 , understandable as the format kinda change from what was known on the previous major; Krakow 2017. From ELeague boston 2018, the format was as following: On each Stage but the playoffs, you got against each other on a Swiss Best of 1 (Bo1) Swiss format means that you play teams on a similar score than you; so teams that win 1 match go against each others, and teams that went on a 0-1 record fight another 0-1 and so on until every team has either 3 wins or 3 loses 1) You have New Challengers Stage: They invited the teams that got to the PGL Offline Major but did not reach legends (Cloud9 was 1 of those teams as they went 2-3 on the best of 1 format) - From here, 16 teams will fight for 8 slots to participate on the New Legends Stage - loses or 3 wins (3 loses meaning you are out) * Because Inmortals (the runner up from Krakow) change organizations and couldnt have the papers on time, they did not participate on the major, meaning there was an additional spot, and all the teams that went 2-3 on New Challengers got to play a bo1 decider for the 8th slot ( 3 way tie between Renegades Avangar and Liquid, because of round diferential, the winner between Renegades and Avangar will play Liquid for the spot; This is why Liquid made it to the New Legends Stage) Cloud9 was looking good, as they made it into the New Legends Stage with a 3-0, but they did get invited to this stage, because they got onto the previous Major Legend Stage, and not because they were on a good lvl @33:22 ; you also put an Graphic for the NEXT major that was Faceit London Major, event that Cloud9 did got invited because they won the Eleague Boston Major, but thats another topic (they bombed out of the event along with Faze, ouch) 2) Every team that makes top 8 (playoffs) on the previous major, qualify directly to the "New Legends Stage"; where teams fight for 8 slots to go to the playoffs with again bo1 competition with the teams that made it from New Challengers. You dont need to play 5 teams as you mention on a graphic on @36:41 @39:16, you only need to, again, win 3 matches, but because Cloud9 got defeated by G2 and Space Soldiers (Xantares an Paz played a hell of a game tbh), they where against the ropes as they went 0-2 and needed to win every single other game to made it onto the next phase. Additionaly, you mention that Stewie didnt have experience on the big stages, but they already participated on the Krakow and many other lan events with big teams on the line @37:40.
Before I clicked on this video I thought to myself, "Is this the Cloud9 dub?" I remember watching it live back in the day and oh my god was it a trip then. It was also my first and only major I've really watched and followed with, thankfully I backed the right horse at the time to make it even better. Thank you for the wonderful video to bring me back to that wonderful moment.
Fantastic video! You should make some more cs stories for sure man, even though I watched this major live, this video still had me engrossed for the whole video length. Great work!
I love that you showed the rest of your 4k almost clutch at the end. I did the same sit back and hands behind the head when you got killed from jungle. Thanks for making this. I got so hype at 0:33 and knew what game you were gonna cover immediately cause that call always gives me goosebumps.
This is my favorite video I've ever seen. I will never forget this match, watching it live, my definite favorite memory of this game. The build up and narration was literally so fucking well made, you brought me back there. Thank you for getting me emotional at 1 am on a Wednesday ;-;
If not Boston 2018, I would put IEM Cologne 2022 Faze vs Navi as one of the greatest series ever played for any competitive shooter. A back and forth 5 map showdown that displayed immense skill and talent that really showed the beauty and intenstiy of Counter-Strike. And oh... NO KIT!
just made it to the part where u mentioned james bardolph and ddk as your fav casters,,, couldnt agree more, such a talented and enteertaining duo, not only when the matches were LIVE but especially when there was pauses, tech issues, down time etc, didnt even mind it. miss them soo so much.
Shit like this is why I loved this game when I played back in 2015-2016. I played all day everyday because I wanted to be the next screaM or Shroud but when I finally made it to MG1 I was so burnt out I didn't touch the game again until last night. I'm currently SE and rising back up slowly. Glad to be back
Dev this was great! definitively saving this for later whenever I want to reminisce on how amazing this game really is, even as a European I still think this is one of the greatest moments of CS

I had a friend come over and we watched it on TV. The game was so intense i remember the game went on way longer than we expected. My parents went to sleep while me and my friend were eating popcorn and jumping out of oue seats on almost every round. Fond memories :)

Strongly Agree. This could have beeen like 35 minutes shorter.
Not showing the KennyS flick on F0rest on Inferno where even the commentator messes up his commentary as the lightning fast flick is criminalll
this final is what got me into the csgo esports! looking back, i feel awful for guardian but im so proud of c9!
this video was absolutely brimming with your passion. thank u. if i may, i would really appreciate a remake, a watered down version but with all the main points still, (less of individual members' highlight clips, and cs:go mechanics explanations, etc.) to fit into maybe a 15-20 minute version? just an idea i think many would enjoy.
Thanks for the great video!!
i remember watching live as stewie held B solo. i could NOT have been more elated when he pulled it off. truly one of the best majors in cs history
What a great video this was! Thank you! I remember all to well how insane that final was, and the heartbreak in the end!
I've never been happier for someone I've never met than I was for Ska after they won that major.
At 35:39 you can hear your fire alarm beep. I hope you swapped the batteries out by now.
literally i miss those esports days, am still remember betting all my skin into faze when faze face c9 at eleague 2018, i lost all of my kniv lmao, for a highschool student that money literally pretty damn huge aamount of money but yeah that's how my life was back in the days, cs always be my favorites
I kept tuning in and they would start losing and then I would tune out and they start winning
dude ive seen this story told over and over and you murdered this. Well done man waita revive this story and bring context from every angle!
dude, the fucking emotions and hard work you put into making of this video, we felt all of that. Great video, loved every bit of it. I saw the match live myself and you brought everything back!
It's the beautiful game. Counter Strike is my baseball. Constant competitions in the pro scene means you can always find some kind of high level games going on. Stats galore and interesting storylines. I love this game.
1:04 this guy CLEARLY has never played matchmaking before
This match is one of my favorite memories growing up. My friends and I were all in discord going crazy throughout the entire match. Will always be grateful to the c9 players for giving me that night. It was something special.
I like how the first 54 mins are just the intro
I didn't even need to see the video to know which match this was going to be, round 30 inferno is still etched into my mind
Thanks Dev. you spoke for many, and brought my attention to a wonderful story. Please enjoy this backpat.
Nature has David Attenborough, CS has DevtheMage. Epic narration and video topic!
The Denmark PM going "you won't be judged for your race" lmfao
Replace your smoke detector batteries
feels like the beautiful combination of a jon bois and grtr4sh vid smushed together, amazing work! loved it the whole way through
Amazing video, I LOVE the clear passion you have for the entire thing. I'm not from NA, I'm not super into that scene, but I love seeing the story you built. Great work :)
One slight missed opportunity I feel: you could have gone for a great fakeout ending with Stewie's missed ace during OT1, he was literally one bullet away from winning the major there.
well said and shown dude. CS will
forever echo in eternity at least mine and i’m damn sure will evolve over time but this game will always remain frozen in many years ahead as it did since it started in 99.
I must say, as a point to your essay, dont immediately reveal who the winner was
Watched it live, didn't appreciate it as much as I do now. Phenomenal video.
I was watching this match rooting for Faze back then and you just let me experience the same match over from a completely opposite view, thank you :)
its great you said that it wasnt about the best game of all time, as there are still games left to play
we love a fantastic underdog story
i remember watching this back in 2018. i cried tears of joy for probably an hour. and you said it best, i can go back to that match, knowing the outcome, and still get the same emotions
From ELeague boston 2018, the format was as following:
On each Stage but the playoffs, you got against each other on a Swiss Best of 1 (Bo1)
Swiss format means that you play teams on a similar score than you; so teams that win 1 match go against each others, and teams that went on a 0-1 record fight another 0-1 and so on until every team has either 3 wins or 3 loses
1) You have New Challengers Stage: They invited the teams that got to the PGL Offline Major but did not reach legends (Cloud9 was 1 of those teams as they went 2-3 on the best of 1 format)
- From here, 16 teams will fight for 8 slots to participate on the New Legends Stage
- loses or 3 wins (3 loses meaning you are out)
* Because Inmortals (the runner up from Krakow) change organizations and couldnt have the papers on time, they did not participate on the major, meaning there was an additional spot, and all the teams that went 2-3 on New Challengers got to play a bo1 decider for the 8th slot ( 3 way tie between Renegades Avangar and Liquid, because of round diferential, the winner between Renegades and Avangar will play Liquid for the spot; This is why Liquid made it to the New Legends Stage)
Cloud9 was looking good, as they made it into the New Legends Stage with a 3-0, but they did get invited to this stage, because they got onto the previous Major Legend Stage, and not because they were on a good lvl @33:22 ; you also put an Graphic for the NEXT major that was Faceit London Major, event that Cloud9 did got invited because they won the Eleague Boston Major, but thats another topic (they bombed out of the event along with Faze, ouch)
2) Every team that makes top 8 (playoffs) on the previous major, qualify directly to the "New Legends Stage"; where teams fight for 8 slots to go to the playoffs with again bo1 competition with the teams that made it from New Challengers.
Goosebumps through the entire latter half of this video. This was amazing storytelling.
You forgot to mention economy in your brief explanation of the game, however, I think you covered everything else fairly well!
Thank you for setting this up so beautifully. This should be required viewing for any fans of CS and esports in general :)
Honestly I respect your opinion as an NA fan, but my favorite series has to be the NaVi vs FaZe 5 mapper at Cologne. What a banger that one was.
The twistzz play was crazy
it took me 1 year to find this video again and i couldn't be happier
The passion in your storytelling made this a really enjoyable and fun watch. Thank you!
This is one of the best-told stories I’ve heard in a long time. I forgot all the details of this so your video was great!
My heart was genuinely pounding in those c9 vs faze clips
This is my favorite video I've ever seen. I will never forget this match, watching it live, my definite favorite memory of this game. The build up and narration was literally so fucking well made, you brought me back there. Thank you for getting me emotional at 1 am on a Wednesday ;-;
Thank you for making the love letter to this match, this game deserves. We share the passion, thank you for reminding me of my best csgo experience!
Glad to be back
Glad to have you back
Funny to think that had Skadoodle taken the money from matchfixing, we might not have gotten the Boston result and C9 might never have won a major.
41:06 you said "And we don't do well on Cobblestone at all" instead of saying Overpass which was the actual map
that is easily the best intro i’ve ever seen in a youtube video
Thanks man, I thought so too
Dev this was great! definitively saving this for later whenever I want to reminisce on how amazing this game really is, even as a European I still think this is one of the greatest moments of CS
Hiko clutches 1v5 with tec 9
„Its only because of the casters“
Hiko: am i a joke
I'm not from NA but when I was watching Inferno my heart was beating out of my chest. I've not experienced as much tension watching any sport in my life.
please put a battery in your fire alarm
17:10 almost 5 years of experience being in a band, that slide up on the string after everyone stops is definitely something i do impulsively every time lmao. your editing is s tier
I had a friend come over and we watched it on TV. The game was so intense i remember the game went on way longer than we expected. My parents went to sleep while me and my friend were eating popcorn and jumping out of oue seats on almost every round.
Fond memories :)
from the Greatest game of Counter Strike to the game that refuses to die, we all watched till the end. :)
