      @@flamefromHalo "Social Credit" does not actually exist, the "Chinese Clown Makeup" that Xu Xiaodong wore was in fact, not anywhere close to "Clown Makeup". The name "徐冬瓜" (Xu Donggua) does not mean idiot or whatever he said in the video, it's simply his name (Xu Dong in the Xiaodong which is a common way to tell people's names) but with the 瓜 added at the end, which means fruit, melon, etc. (for example 西瓜 is watermelon). The only possible way for it to be derogetory would be to say 傻瓜 (傻 meaning dumb). I stopped watching the video at 24 mins so I likely missed more inaccuracies outside of these.

      @@lagudoufu apologies, but it seems that my reply was deleted, I assume because it gave links to other sites.
      The clown makeup example was a quote from Xu Dong and likely a translation error or journalistic flair. He was, however, coerced into wearing said makeup by chinese officials, according to him, so maybe it made him feel like a clown.
      His title 'winter melon' was supposedly one given to make fun of his large stature, acorrding to him. I do not know where the 'mad dog' came from.
      The social credit system has been well documented in china and many countries [including the US] have metrics to value their citizens with. It may not be the boogeyman people make it out to be 100% of the time, but some places do have a government appointed metric for their citizens that can hinder their options in life.

      I remember the first time myself. I had been in karate for a few years, and it was always these "soft" punches (even though we had gear). My friend had wanted to fight me and I agreed but he wanted a pair of gloves. I gave him mine and weirdly manipulated the foot padding things to be gloves. He decked me right away and laughed. I was so shocked my practice was gone in an instant. I got up and when we restarted I did the same thing he did to me. I decked him right away. We stopped for a minute. We went again again. And we traded a few times. I don't remember who won that third "match". All I remember is that we just kept going for another thirty minutes. Still under those rules where a clean hit "wins" and then there was a break. We just had so much fun fighting. We didn't get salty about it. We never yelled at each other about "oh that was lucky". We just kept at it cause, well it's gonna sound corny, we were friends. I quit karate almost immediately after (convinced my mom to by another set of gear though before I told her I was done). I got a lot of friends then in the neighborhood who just wanted to take turns fighting each other. We ended having a group of eight and we used one of my old trophies as a "belt" for the reigning "champ". Well, long story short it was great time in my life. The champ was always this guy named chandler. Everyone else could take a few punches from each other but man thay dude was knockdown champ. I only ever beat him once cause I tripped up his legs, and no kid on the ground wants to get hit a bunch, so I got the win. I'm not really proud of it cause who would ever brag about winning one fight as a kid lmao. But those memories mean a lot to me still. Just a bunch of kids fighting for fun. We wanted to win but it's not like any of us hated anyone else. Anyway, this comment really shocked that memory forward into my brain and had me smiling really hard to myself. Thanks for that.

      @Russ Olson What Chinese ethics did you study? The ones taught by those no-touch KO "masters"? Loyality is above all virtues; Also, Confucius succeeded in what? His ambition was to help create a country governed by his principles, you know, since he was a political philosopher first and foremost. That didn't happen for a few hundred years after his death.

    • @jeremiaas15
      @jeremiaas15 3 года назад +19

      @Russ Olson I admit, I did misread you somewhat, but still, I believe you're making a mistake and simultaniusly are right but at a different angle here- Confucianism isn't "a force towards the optimum"; virtues of the past are always more important than what is most efficient/proffitable/popular. In this sence the traditional martial artists are in the right here- they claim superiority because they stay true to old principles. In the present day it is sound and impeccable from a neoconfucian standpoint, employed by the Chinese society and, to some extent, the state. However as a classical confucianist myself I can't oversee one crucial point- both sides are wrong, mainly because kung fu and other martial arts here are fairly modern. Wei Liaozi would probably argue that they are not martial arts at all, since, what is most crucial, they don't employ weapons and are not ment to settle any conflicts. They don't have a cultural significance, they're not music nor poetry, just forms of dance. They don't give military strenght, just an illusion of one, so they can't really be deployed in peace-keeping nor defence of the state.
      As for your last paragraph, I think you might have fallen victim to unfaithful translations. Granted, my understanding of written classical Chinese isn't perfect, I read most the classics in Japanese, but still the simmilarity of writting gives a certain assurance neither Latin nor Cyrilic scripts can't grant. It's not trying to be the best that matters, it's being correct/propper/sound. Confucius always avoided superlatives and uncertain ideals.

    As someone who fought amateur and practices martial arts for work (high risk security and PSD), you hit the nail 100% on the head when you said that learning how to get punched was one of the most important lessons of martial arts. You can be one of the most accomplished practitioners out there, but you will be at a disadvantage if you have never participated in full contact sparring. There's no substitute or mental preparation that prepares you for the first solid punch you catch with your face. Learning how to overcome that shock and recover to keep fighting is one of the most critical lessons of any true martial art.
    There are many valuable lessons that can be taken from meditation and the concept of Chi. The meditation and breathing techniques can reduce stress and anxiety. There is also a lot of evidence that these techniques can help soothe irritations of the vagus nerve (which causes everything from indigestion and flatulence to abnormal heart rhythms. However, it's not a fighting art. It can supplement a fighting art as part of a whole person/whole warrior concept, but it is not a substitute for real world training in striking and grappling arts.

    Xu isn't wrong at all. Bruce Lee's philosophy for Jeet Kune Do was something that shook up traditional Chinese understanding of martial arts and most people weren't happy with that. Years later, however, we see how far ahead of his time Lee really was. MMA is exactly what fighting should be because no one style is the best. All people are different and everyone has strengths and weaknesses. While traditional Chinese Kung Fu is great and all, its practical application has long since been supplanted not only by MMA but by things like guns.
    It's very interesting to see that China's government is now promoting Kung Fu as a way of propaganda. I was ready to come to this video and say you were full of shit, but you hit the nail on the head. Those fighting styles definitely have something to them and it certainly helps your body and mind grow to learn one, but you can't simply rely on rigid technique. Being rigid in life, much like in a fight, will get you nowhere.

    It is amazing how Xu’s story and existence in his own country is seen as shameful and disgraced, but if you tell literally anybody in a different part of the world about him and they will see it as something so incredibly brave and powerful that hearing about his unjust treatment makes them sick to their stomach. In a community that’s supposedly all about discarding hatred and rather using their enemies’ own negative emotions against them, there is an awful large amount of venom and anger being spat at a man whose only crime is not believing in the same mentality. I’m really hoping that Xu’s campaign against what is basically the entire Chinese system doesn’t end up ruining the lives of him and his loved ones.

      You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. "Ancient dogma" you say? For most of China's history, there were "death matches" where different martial arts instructors would challenge one another in public, and often the loser would be crippled or killed. Chinese Kung Fu instructors would travel the country and fight anyone willing to challenge them. There isn't a country on Earth which still allows this nonsense, which inevitably starts gang-fights. What happened to Xu would have happened in any western country; if you go online and start insulting and harassing Karate and Taekwondo instructors, you'll get sued for defamation and business losses. The most tragic part of Xu’s story is that he isn’t doing what he’s doing to embarrass his country. He’s doing because he loves his country and is trying to push for change to make it stronger. Alas, that tends to be the story behind most of the greatest hero’s in just about any given country’s history. And , usually, they aren’t truly recognized for it until long after they are gone.

      I don't know what I would do if I were in his shoes. Maybe I would have stopped after the first fight; maybe after I've done a few. Xu Xiaodong has all my respect, despite everything they are doing to him, he's standing for what is right. Not surprised at all by what China is doing, after all he's exposing a lie that is being used to control the population, it's the same when big dictators used religion with the same intention. So the moment someone shows it's all crap, which means people might start thinking for themselves, authorities freak out and do everything they can to cover it up. That Xu Xiaodong story made me really upset, and I've only known the guy minutes ago after finishing this video. He's a very brave guy who isn't afraid to speak his mind and go against propagated bullshit, but having the balls to do all that has its consequences in China and it's unfortunate that a whole country would harass and humiliate one single man like that. Watching the video of him crying was painful, the genuine cry of a man who's been abandoned by everyone around him. It's amazing how he still endures it all despite the injustice.

    • @Jayngfet
      @Jayngfet 4 года назад +292

      As someone who's been following Xu for years it's been genuinely heartbearking to watch it happen in real time. He makes constant, repeated statements about his love for China. He claims he has no high ideals he's also said many times the reason he fights so passionately is because he sees so many people caught up in the same delusions Eyepatch spends this video talking about. He fights because he genuinely loves a country that hates him and would rather return to a delusion.
      Ramsey Dewey has been coaching and fighting in China for well over a decade, since before anyone even knew what MMA was and he's spoken at length about how Chinese officials and promoters are so outlandishly crooked that the draw declaration is the norm and not the exception. He has a hole in his skull from being punched with cheated gloves and the one time he unambiguously won a fixed fight by choking out his opponent multiple times into overtime they simply refused to pay him.
      From what I gather the audience knows it's fake, because of course they do. Xu Xiaodong isn't nearly the only guy going through this and it's painfully obvious when the better fighter loses or has a forced draw. Which is a tragedy because there are many good fighters with inspiring stories in China. Zhang Zhaili was almost heavyweight champion of the world. Zhang Weili is a UFC champion. Plenty of other fighters are winning actual world titles or fighting abroad. I see Chinese fighters at my local events trying their hardest with absolutely no support from their community and I wind up cheering them on because nobody else will, even other Chinese in the audience. Because the community thinks "real fighting" is barbaric and even if they don't there's an expectation that these fights are just more trickery and it isn't real.

    I'm watching this very late (since I've just discovered your channel) and I haven't finished this video yet, but I wanted to comment how pleased I was to see you relate the reactions people had to no-touch masters to things like faith healing/being slain in the spirit. As a teen, I was briefly a member of a pentecostal-type church (which I hesitate to call a cult, primarily because it was part of a traditional denomination, but it was definitely... weird), and I have been on the receiving side of these kinds of things, and I know it seems from the outside that people are acting/larping, but I think more accurately, while someone may "act" at first (this is happening to others but not to me, I should just go along), ultimately your own brain starts playing tricks on you because you become convinced that this power *is* real and it *is* working on you, and therefore your body reacts as it "should" even though that's obvious, to an outside observer, that it's mere nonsense.
    From a certain perspective, the no-touch masters *are* knocking people out with psychic energy. It's just the social "psychic" energy that results in the members of these dojos buying into the fantasy so hard, that they react as though the "punches" are real.

My grandpa and some of my old relatives made me believe some of fake martial arts coz they themselves are too busy dig in on whats really happening. With very irrelevant moves againts the oposing student, I almost got hospitalized, but thankfully its my bday and my mom became visible on classroom when thats happening. They ceased bullying me when my mom starts giving cake to everyone, even the ones that bully me.
    Thankfully though, people on media stopped spreading martial art bullcrap. Ever since I learned and trained Taekwondo for years, and now seeing this video, I knew that martial arts is a very serious thing that people cant just make a profit out of it.... and Im truly thankful that people from media nowadays are truly aware of it. i haven’t been involved with martial arts for a long time (i just fell out of it, and when i was ready to go back, covid hit), but i admire the hell out of Xu. i really hope he’s seen as a hero in his own country soon enough; he deserves nothing less.

  • @Nogu3

    The world of fake martial arts is especially interesting to me since I was formerly a professional sumo wrestler.
    A lot of folks dont understand sumo, seeing it as "two fat guys in diapers butting heads", yet this is a martial art/sport where people have died, where bones crack and blood spills. I have no objection to the fact sumo has zero place in a street brawl save for a good palm thrust or a throw, but our discipline is one that requires strength and substance.
    Martial arts in this day and age are frankly irrelevant from a self defence viewpoint, save for like... grappling, people who advertise such ability with a fancy flick of the finger are snakes that damage the history and principles of being a martial artist. However, to train, either for health, or tradition, hell even for fun, is nothing to be ashamed of.

      @TheDragonSsJ The portrayal did kind of shit on bruce lee though. Lee actually said Muhammad Ai would kill him. The movie says the opposite. Tarantino for some reason thinks he was an arrogant person while the people who knew him like Kareem Abdul Jabar said he was a humble person with realistic views on stuff like could he beat Muhammad Ali in an actual fight. Tarantino is not better than the 'kung fu masters' referenced in the video. Telling lies to prop up a story and doesn't have the decency to say something as benign as 'it was artistic licence'. He doubled down and said the movie Lee is who the real Lee was.

    • @somethingcool1533
      @somethingcool1533 4 года назад +5

      kingmanic I think that was BS on Booth’s part since in the same movie we see Lee train Tate for the Wrecking Crew movie and having a good time doing it. It was short but it showed Lee as a cool guy rather than the arrogant dude from earlier. Which actually happened, amazingly enough. That was real whereas Booth throwing Lee into a car, probably breaking his back judging from the dent’s size, wasn’t. I think it was supposed to be both funny and foreshadow the movie’s very different from reality climax. I’m not saying it’s invalid for anyone to have a problem with the movie - honestly, that makes for interesting conversations - but I don’t think Tarantino really meant to bash Lee, seeing as he did so much research and had great respect for the icons of that era.

    I frequently rewatch this video. I love how you talk about martial arts. There's clear passion and understanding there. I watch it because I was out of Judo for nearly 7-8 years, having done it for nearly as long, before returning one last time before the pandemic hit and I moved back to my hometown where the old club had closed down those 7-8 years ago. I'm the worst kind of perfectionist, but what I learned in Judo, which to be fair wasn't enough to make me a very good fighter by any stretch of the imagination, I had to learn by failing over and over again. It was the one thing I felt I could fail at numerous times and be motivated to keep doing just as much as anything else. The pandemic has forced me to have to wait on returning to that world once again for some time, and watching your videos on fighting reminds me of how it felt to not have to care about your performance, to know that if you just kept at something you could get more and more out of it regardless of whether you became great at it or not.
