I am trying to do something similar. I am trying to create a duct having a parallelogram profile at one end and a circular profile at the other. I linked the central axis of both with a straight line - acting as the rail. I wanted the finished part to be hollow with a 5 mm thick wall all along the model.
All I can get from the loft tool is a completely solid body. Is it not possible to use the loft tool in this way or am I missing something.
If anyone has any suggestions I would be pleased to hear from them.

      Try using SURFACE - LOFT
And then add thickness with SURFACE -THICKEN
