The Ending Of Signs Is Worse Than You Remember

- M. Night Shyamalan's Signs was considered one of his biggest successes for a long time. After the groundbreaking releases of The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, every studio in Hollywood wanted a crack at M. Night Shyamalan's next script. Though after 2 decades of examination, the ending of Signs has not held up as many fans remember. Known for his big twist endings, M. Night Shyamalan seemed to have his first misstep with Signs, but no one noticed at the time.

The last alien knew he was stranded & definitely wanted to die rather than be taken alive.
All the other aliens found out there was water everywhere and immediately left...and one accidentally stayed behind. It's Home Alone if Kevin was killed by the wet bandits.
I liked Signs. I discussed the water thing with friends at the time and we came to the conclusion that it didn't matter.
We never saw spaceships in the movie. It’s possible the “aliens” were actually demons and the water was holy water. It would make sense considering the movie is about a character finding their faith… just an interesting theory.
@@vidmikes That is not true at all. At about 40 minutes into the movie, we see the family watching a news broadcast, and it is said that there are ships hovering above cities in the US and Mexico, and they show footage of the lights over a city at night. In a later scene that takes place the next morning, Merrill tells Graham that the ships appear to have left, but a bird was caught on camera hitting an invisible wall in the sky and falling straight down. They were cloaking their ships.
Not everything has to be demons.

Signs was one of those films where I've always liked it but I can't tell you why
Because the acting is remarkably good and it follows the ‘less is more’ rule very well when it comes to suspense/horror.
It’s enjoyable. A movie doesn’t have to be perfect to be loved.
I couldn't even remember that it starred Mel Gibson and Joaquin Phoenix, but I remembered all of the major plot points and all of the iconic scenes like the alien walking through the alley and the fingers under the doorway.
Opposite problem here. I’ve always hated and wasn’t sure what about it sucked but this video explains it well
It's because it's very unconventional in terms of a horror movie. The movie is very quiet, like there isn't much music at all in the beginning. It's super polarizing because the beginning credits are loud and bombastic and then you get to the first scenes and it's deafeningly quiet. The build up of events is really good and the tension feels authentic.
I like this film for not making the characters saviors of humanity. They hid in a basement, just like anyone would. And all the random events that happened in the film are connected in the end. It shows a global event, with the camera lens on something small, a family with their everyday problems.
You are wrong about this one. Signs isn't like his typical twist plots. It's about SIGNS!
No, it's not subtle. It's decidedly not subtle. But it's exactly what it promises to be.
The fact that the big terrifying monster was easily dispatched is part of the theme of Faith. Because it was his fear and doubt that were the real enemies.
Nice.
Yeah this movie smacks you over the head with this, but I don't dislike it.
M Night is that you? 🤔
true.
@@aki7411 no lie
The aliens are scouts readying for a full invasion and then backs off. Make sense to me.
Let me see if I got this straight… Beings that are alien to a planet arrive because they were told it is inhabitable, even though it wasn’t, by one of their reputable scientists (let’s call him Matt). This is in spite of the warning signs, because his lover (let’s call her Anne) convinced the group to do so. Matt and a second alien (let’s call him Matthew) tussle and upset the planet’s biology. Then they all hightail it out of there.… Absurd! This would never work as a movie.
Yes, they are scouting for danger, oohhhh has tons of water here, well, this really shred un apart, well full invasion will had too many losts, because those monkeys can throw water on us really easy, yeap let invade another planet that has dogs with water, they can't throw at us, because they not know how to throw, just catch stuff...
They are not aliens, they are actually demons.
NO MOVIE EVER MADE DIDNT HAVE PLOT HOLES OF SOME KIND
BIG OR SMALL....GET OVER IT
Unpopular opinion but I like the ending and I love the movie as a whole and think it’s M Nights best movie even behind The 6th Sense. The sound track/main theme is fantastic. The horror is done very tastefully and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The acting from the whole cast is superb, and say what you will about Mel Gibson’s personal shortcomings but the scene of him saying goodbye to his dying wife is enough to bring any grown man to tears.
Not unpopular to me friend.
I might not be able to say it's his best, but it's definitely my favorite. I have watched it the most and will rewatch it again.
A rare fail from Nerdstalgic. .
Couldn’t agree more
Yup. I’m with you. I loved this movie as a kid. I haven’t seen it in a long time, but I’d be willing to bet money that I’d still love it. I think this movie is what gave me an appreciation for good horror movies.
Wouldn't it be "ahead of the 6th sense"? Asking for a friend
I've never understood the criticisms for this movie. I absolutely love it.
*"but why do aliens go to a planet made out of water if it's deadly for them??"*
They don't. They sent Scouts to the planet and the Scouts figured out it was inhospitable for them, so they left. That's the entire finale.
Jesus Christ. Absolutely no bloody way. Hearing this described out I’ve realised how fantastic Signs was. This channel is excellent and while this one can be defended by what M Night went onto, I think there’s many off takes. It’s a beautiful movie about fate and everything adds up. I really don’t get how it clumsily ends because all I feel during the ending is amazement.
Nah, this is a miss for me especially with the video's title. Still love the movie to this day, the ending never really bothered me personally.
Right there with you. I had no idea there was any issues with the ending until now.
I'd say the idea of water-averse aliens invading Earth is a dumb plothole. But then I remember War of the Worlds ended with the aliens dying of contact with bacteria, so maybe Shyamalan was inadvertently paying homage to that idea.
I mean in our history plagues were a huge factor of destroying cities or even countries. Thousand of native americans died because of the old world diseases. Now imagine of a whole world with bacteria that our inmune system can't fight
Or on purpose
Members of the same species die from foreign microbiota from just a continent away, there's precedent for the concept.
He absolutely was, but it’s still horribly stupid. Water literally falls from the sky here. It makes up 71% of the surface area of the planet. The white bands of clouds made of water are covering about 67% of the earth at any given moment.
That’s INSANE to pretend that these idiot aliens can just walk around entirely unprotected, because just being in our atmosphere would likely be extremely painful, and at the very least, uncomfortable. And again, can travel across lightyears to reach us, but can’t detect water? Really?
And that’s not even getting into the fact that, as far as we know, water is a requirement for biology. Water and energy are like the *only* prerequisites for life here, from the lowly bacteria, to the complexity of humanity, water is the #1 thing that ties all life together.
FFS, when the alien skin burns, it reveals red blood underneath it, no? If that’s to imply some kind of iron/oxygen chemical reaction the way our blood turns red in the presence of oxygen… it requires WATER in order to oxidize! So either he’s implying that their blood normally doesn’t do that, or they have a similar biology that just magically only burns in the presence of like, “a lotta wotta”
At least with microbes, one can become contaminated with improper ventilation systems, or simply by just coming into contact with something you weren’t planning to. Hell, there are microbes that live exclusively in the fuel tanks of jet engines, and subsist exclusively on jet fuel. It’s entirely believable that something a space suit normally protects one from might not be 100% sealed from something you didn’t plan for at the extremely small virus-sized molecular level.
WotW was more or less the inverse of what happened to the Americas when Europeans came to settle the lands. Instead of bringing death with them, the aliens arrived at a world entirely hostile to them with no way for them to really test or verify that, because the threat was microscopic.
Water isn’t microscopic here. Water is *everything* here. It’s idiotic to a degree of like… if their alien biology can’t coexist with liquid water, their alien biology cannot even exist. If they’re able to walk around in this pressure and temperature in our atmosphere, then they coexist with liquid water and are keenly aware of it.
The whole premise is just mind numbingly bad. It’s not “oh they’re afraid of large bodies of water because their bone density means they can’t swim and so they drown easily, so let’s all live on islands waterworld style” it’s that they melt like sidewalk chalk when presented with the wet end of a garden hose.
The fact that this was even made is honestly laughable to me. It’s the equivalent of a person landing on Venus and then walking out of a pod in a T-shirt or even landing on Titan and not realizing that liquid methane is like… super bad for your health.
It’s 100% unfathomable, and completely destroys every inch of that film.
Because humans have never invested money, time, or resources into dangerous areas.
I loved the ending. You’re crazy man. It’s a perfect movie.
Perfect indeed

IN A RATING OF 1-10,,---,,,SIGNS IS 12 WAY ABOVE 10

CRAZY TO INSULT THE FILM AND MAKER OF SIGNS
@@JayaMadhavadas yer dang right!
Water is abundant in the universe, it's impossible to believe that even if they aren't carbon-based lifeforms that had no water on their planet, that they haven't encountered it before, when they're a species that is capable of FTL travel lol. Thing is, Signs isn't a sci-fi movie, it's a movie about faith.
Who’s to say those aliens created the FTL Travel. Maybe they hijacked their crafts and didn’t know how to travel properly
I watched a really good review that said the aliens were never aliens but in fact demons, which fits better the scenario about faith and regaining Faith and the necessity for belief for salvation.
When Columbus first landed in America, he didn't even know he wasn't in India. I think you are giving too much credit to the forethought of explorers.
@@Luneytoon When you have to make up reasons not explained in the media in question as to why they did something stupid, the media is pretty stupid.
Aliens were actually demons and the water that hurt them in the house was blessed holy water when Mel Gibsons character regained his faith and became a pastor again.
Fan theory suggests that the monsters weren’t aliens, they were demons and that the water in each glass were holy water coincidentally blessed by Gibsons character and that’s why it had such an effect on them.
This makes sense
@@arthuredensThis makes zero sense because the movie literally says they left the planet, most likely due to fragility of their skin when in touch with H2O, which we also have the same issue. If we stay in the water for too long our skin will disintegrate.

I’m gonna have to disagree with you. You made a great video, but I liked the ending, I think there was enough mystery and suspense even when they revealed the alien fully twice, I’ve rewatched it many times as an adult and it still gives me the chills.
Agreed. The sofa scene is tremendous writing. The scene when they are climbing on the car is tremendous camera work. And the ending works especially well if you are a religious person who knows what it means to doubt.
(Also, The Lady in the Water needed about 3 re-writes and would have been great.)
Totally agree. The only thing that holds it back is that the CGI for the alien aged horribly. When he mentions that his son had asthma and the poison didn't get in to his lungs... tears me up every time. Such an intense scene.
Me too! This is hands down, my favorite "scary movie" and I watch it regularly.

for real, though its harder than ever to stay fresh and relevant these days
Signs is perfection. The spiritual undertone, the cinematography, the dialogue, the music, the pacing, the nostalgia. Pop corn flicks don’t get better than this!
So rewatchable, right?
I already commented once but holy christ you were unnecessarily cruel to the film.
Biggest swing and miss he’s ever had. This movie is a masterpiece
YES,,,,Just Bullshit Talk....THE FILM SIGNS IS AMAZING.
I was lucky enough to see this movie opening weekend in the theatres. One of the best movie experiences I ever had. The whole audience was putty in M. Night’s hands.
Oh my gosh, we had the best audience too!! Were you also in a theatre in Miami? Because that audience was AMAZING!
Nah, signs is a classic , portraying divine providence in an awesome and creative way .
This is no longer a Christian nation... as Obama said. So divinity is taboo
It is....portrayed. Awesome is stretching like a Yoga practitioner
I happen to be in awe of the ending in Signs. It always makes me think ..,'what DO I really believe?.....
The ending isn't an issue... The entire way the aliens attack and handle themselves in this movie is like they are scared too. Like they are desperate and even though there are a TON of things that can harm or kill them they out of a need to survive stage this attack. The water being something that harms them fits with this line of thought pretty well. Hell they even leave behind the injured alien who attacks the kid at the end. His people left him in their haste to take what they could and get out of dodge. Seems to me a fine ending
No, it's not and stop telling me how to feel 😂
What were the wife's last words to Mel I can't hear!?!?
😂😂😂
Signs is an absolute classic. A staple of every kid that grew up in the early O’s childhood.
Mel Gibson during the early 2000s was on fire, "What Women Want", "We Were Soldiers", "The Patriot" and this movie were all hits. Especially Signs was a different role from his career

Among the theories you briefly mentioned is also a theory that really gives the ending a lot more sensible m
They aren't aliens, but demons. The water isn't just regular water, but holy water. Makes the themes of rediscovering faith and averting the end (apocalypse) have a linear follow -through at the end.
I don't think they're literally meant to be demons, but metaphorically absolutely.
This is a fan theory that slowly gained momentum to try and restore credibility to the ending of the movie after it had already been beaten to a bloody pulp for years, but the reality is that there's just as many plot holes (if not more) if they're demons instead of aliens.
@@travistotle Quite possible, I wouldn't count out glaring plot holes from Shyamalan. He is a frustrating filmmaker. He takes big leaps of logic and often falls flat on his face narratively, but I also admire that very desire to take those big leaps.
I love how many people are disagreeing. I'm with them.
Also, Shyamalan movies ended up being a little formulaic but like a three act structure or hero's journey, there's comfort and enjoyment in that familiarity.
As if Rod Serling,,,,Hitchcock ,,,De Palma -Etc...
WASNT FORMULA-TIC--- Etc...,,,They were 100 %
@@JayaMadhavadas ''Rod Serling,,,,Hitchcock ,,,De Palma -Etc''. One of these things is not like rhe other. One of these things... etc.
Hitchcock and Depalma were both great directors who made multiple classic films and worked in a variety of genres. Serling?
Serling was a talented writer specializing in O Henry style twist endings who had a groundbreaking TV series.
Hitchcock had a somewhat similar TV series late in life, but primarily just as the host. (95% of the episodes were directed by others.)
Shyamalan should have been another Serling, but wanted to be a Hitchcock or Depalma and therefore failed.
His schtick could work well on an anthology TV show, whereas it's just an unsustainable formula for feature films.
Everything infuriating and annoying about his films becomes an asset in a series of (shorter & cheaper to produce) television shows.
i found that the formulaic nature was frustrating if it's a film - and if it's seen in the theater. 6th Sense and Unbreakable surprised me, but every subsequent film lacked that ability. I knew there was a trick and puzzled it out well before the end. I don't mind that if I am at home and just devote 30 to 60 minutes to the Twilight Zone or Outer Limits or Black Mirror. If I go to a movie, that's my entire evening and it costs $28 before popcorn and sodas.
Shyamalan should have been a showrunner/producer for a Twilight Zone reboot, not Jordan Peele.
Excellent video as always. I have to say though, I love this movie. It’s my favorite out of his list. And yes, even the ending. The score, acting and twist I think are masterful. I can understand the criticism for sure but this is one of my top 3 movies of all time. Everyone is perfect here. Even with M. Night’s style of directing. Would recommend this movie to anyone.
This is the movie that inspired Chris Stuckmann to be a filmmaker rather than a film critic.
The ending is fine. I love this movie as i do all M Night movies. The whole movie is built around the "Signs" his wife saw as she died.
I think you missed the mark with this one. What makes Signs and its ending so brilliant is that is an "answer" to the problem of evil in philosophy of religion. We can all relate to sufferings which presently seem devoid of meaning or purpose. But Signs asks its audience to consider that they are in a narrative (that somebody is watching out for them). In doing this one can see a great truth. That the beginning and middle of any story, including the story of our own lives and the sufferings can come with, aren't meant to make sense except in light of the story's end. It is the end which gives the story's beginning and middle its fullness of meaning. If we are indeed in a meta-narrative as has been the most widespread theological belief throughout all human history, than our suffering will only come into their proper contexts and "make sense" when we get to our story's end.
I love this film regardless, you either buy the "water thing" or you don't. I put this one on in the background often, great film and great score.
Bold statements. Be careful in the streets
I just started binging this movie a few days ago and finding everything I could! Great timing!
I don’t think a twist ending was the point of Signs. Nothing wrong with revealing the scary monster at the end of a horror film.
And i think it’s reasonable to assume aliens didn’t know water would kill them if they didn’t have it on their own planet. What other planets besides earth and mars do we know have water? Our solar system could be an anomaly.
Right? As I said elsewhere, explorers never know much about where they land. Columbus thought he was in India. They'd never been here before - even if their ship scanned for KNOWN poisons, it doesn't mean it would have known what water is to even scan it. Or known that we depend on it and pump it into every home.
I'm really glad the comment section seems to be in agreement that Nerdstalgic is wrong today.
I dont think the ending ruins the movie by any means, but I cant say Im a fan of it either. Seems like a gimmick War of the Worlds rip off. But other than that I, I really like this movie a lot.
The movie Nope reminded me of this a lot
I think you totally missed the point of the message of the film. It is an allegory on faith based on Mel Gibson's character losing faith after his wife's death. And with the so called "twist" in the end it works because it focuses on one alien and one family rather than focusing on a number of aliens and characters such as independence day where the twist can be lazily revealed.
Water is actually one of the most common molecules in the universe
Art is subjective, his films today do well and are well received. He is a success story, no matter what story you’re trying to spin. I love his films that itself is success
I remember how difficult it was for me to suspend belief that Mel & Joaquin were brothers and that they somehow shared some kind of common past together with at least one of their parents. It's not just their actual age difference but Mel had already begun to look beyond his years from cigarettes and alcohol
same for me and my family, they kinda ripped on that i think in either scary movie 3 or 4 can't remember which
The water thing never bothered me. Just like the video said, I did enjoy the "fate" twist.
The water thing can be easily scientifically explained, though. Rather than water, the alien might've been alergic to the mineral in the water. And that would explain how liquid water is toxic for the aliens while vapor water doesn't seem to bother them.
Great video.
Thank you for the content! I understand Signs/M. Knight better.
I absolutely loved this movie the first time I saw it, and every time I’ve seen it since then I’ve enjoyed it just as much.
I was young enough to love this movie. It was that grainy birthday shot that did it. And I was a strong person of faith at the time, grew up Baptist and read the Left Behind series, and even now, almost 40, it holds a sweet spot in my heart.
He's a hit or miss director but one of my guilty film pleasures is The Village and i was actually pleased with A Knock at the Cabin
I always say the most unbelievable thing isn't that aliens would try to conquer a planet that was largely toxic to them, but that they would decide to do so NAKED! Apparently, their species developed interstellar travel before they invented clothing, let alone protective gear like hazmat suits.
What a weird critique. Given the faith themes, it's probably worth mentioning that it was on rebelling from God that His children discovered their nakedness and were given skins by God to cover themselves. Clothing would have implied they were part of God's covenant. That would have really conflicted with the other themes of the movie.
They're NOT aliens, they're demons. He's a priest who loses his faith and battles Demons. The girl is described as angel like and she's blessing the water around the house. It burns the demon because it's been "blessed" and it's now Holy water. At the end he's regained his faith and dressed as a priest.
@TheGreatSatan_ stop posting this everywhere dude. We get it. You like that theory. But it's just an interpretation of themes. It's not Canon. Stop haranging this comment section.
Why do these RUclips critics all dislike/hate Signs?? Whenever I read the comments I’m always happy to see I’m not the only one who thoroughly enjoyed the movie! The ending was perfect for the type of movie Signs set out to be.
All the Signs point to another out of this world video from Nerdstalgic
He did grow up watching this movie. Lol
I always liked the idea that these are actually demons instead of aliens, which ties into the religious subtext of the film and the idea that Mel Gibson’s character finds his faith again at the end of the film.
I recently rewatched Signs. The ending didn’t bother me at all. What DID bother me was when Mel Gibson brings his family into the basement and neither him or Joaquin Phoenix had the thought to bring any weapons with them. No knives from the kitchen, no tools. Most notably absent is them not having a shotgun. They’re rural farmers in Pennsylvania. You mean to tell me they don’t have shotguns?
THAT is what took me outta the film, that they literally had nothing to defend themselves. Aside from that, wonderful film with great performances.
not a bad point but perhaps being a pastor most of his life tied into the lack of weaponry
I’d understand and even agree if this wasn’t such a devout family. I totally buy him not thinking about violence at a time like that. I know he’d turned away from the faith, but not really. And even still, it wasn’t a job he just up and quit one day. Likely his whole life had led him to become a pastor in the first place. That’s an entire lifetime believing that violence isn’t necessary - or at least having faith that God will intervene and what happens is meant to happen. So in that moment, thinking only of the safety of his family, he decidedly DOESN’T choose to explore the possibility that he’ll have to provide safety through violence. His instincts have taken over and he’s just focused on getting AWAY from the violence - or potential for violence. I totally believe the thought of grabbing a knife never once crossed his mind.
And maybe it’d make sense for him to have a .22 for scaring coyotes away or something, but I’d equally believe he wouldn’t have any firearms at all.
Personally I don’t seen any issues with this. But that’s just me. You do you, boo.
Living in Australia it didn't take me out of the movie at all. Pretty normal not to have immediate gun access here. I guess just imagine the film is an alternate version of America.
My favorite of his 🤷♂️
Signs is one of my favorite movies of all time!
This was the first film a saw twice in theater's.. i still enjoy it to this day
Nerdstalgic about directors:
Wes Anderson: it's idiosyncratic, aristic and genious
Shyalaman: predictablen and formulaic
BTW, if you want to cririque Shyalaman's movie, why not Lady in th Water? This is where his ego went overboard
That "what? No" was perfect. I laughed so hard.
Never gets old haha
Man, I love this movie. The music still gives me the chills.
The final scene where Phoenix hits the alien was really emotional. It reminded me in a way of the Rocky movies because of the heroic action of the one who had everything to lose but had an ability that made the difference.
I'm very pleased to see so many people liking Signs. I thought maybe I was the only one! The way it fits together at the end is mind-blowing and thought provoking. Because I honestly believe those things are chance. Nothing is meant to be or predetermined.
Back when I was young I couldn't sleep without the tv on because of this movie. It was tense as heck for my young self to handle, poor dude.
My favorite quotes from this movie are "... it's behind!" From the news report in the closet, "This is serious!" From Bo because she says it so cute, and the Patty wagon quote when Mel traps the alien in the pantry.
I liked how all the parts fit in the end of Signs. It never felt like a twist, but I enjoyed the payoff.
whoa. what happened to the audio of this channel?
wait was that glossu "the beast" rabban using his inside voice?
I like the hypothesis that aliens are not invading Earth.
They send scouts to explore and leave when they start getting attacked by people they meet.
In the end, the alien saves the boy with gas and is killed by people who think God saved them.
The meaning of the film becomes a question of isolated individuals seeking meaning in the face of something beyond them, be it the presence of aliens or the death of a loved one. Plot twist: they find answers, but they're wrong.
Yes! Someone gets it!
i remember watching robot chicken do a setup joke about him where everytime something happened Shyamalan turned to the camera and said "what a twist" and that was way more enjoyable than anything he's made after those first 2 films
They aren't aliens. They're fallen angels. Even the lights in the sky are from the bible, where it talked about the fighting spirit creatures during the time of Sodom and Gomorrah. Watch the movie again from that viewpoint and everything makes a LOT more sense.
If the movie just ended when they exited the basement. That would've been a great movie
it definitely would've helped
I'm in this weird spot because I really enjoy most of his ideas, and I like the ideas enough that the writing doesn't bother me much. So I end up really excited for his movies without really expecting much
I watched Signs twice in the movie theater. It's still a movie I love. Like all movies you have to allow yourself to defy belief. In retrospect it always bugged me that the aliens would come to a water planet (I mean what if it rains), but that didn't take away from the movie. It wasn't really important to the movie. It was something you thought about well after watching the movie. But that's what this video is missing. The reality is you thought about Signs days, weeks, or as this video proves, years after seeing the movie. How many movies do that to you? Not many. I think it's a testament to MNight that we still think about this one.
At the time I thought the atmosphere and build in this movie was so good. I watched it in the cinema as a teen and even then remember thinking “what that’s it!?” at the end.
Signs is incredibly underrated. And the ending is great. This is just another example of Star Wars Prequel Syndrome, where everyone loved a certain movie at the time and after a while they decide to bash it and pretend no one ever liked it.
When theyre in the basement after the asthma attack, Merril has the radio on and the host says that they didnt come for earths resources but to abduct people and how they poisoned his friends family and took them away
They were demons and the water was holy. That's a well thought out and discussed belief you can find youtube vids talk about. Actually interesting if you're interested in watching.
In the abstract I like what this movie tries to do. A preacher who has lost faith discovers in a time of crisis that all the little challenges and apparent meaninglessness of existence is exactly what was needed to win. Like somebody set up the pieces that way a long time ago. That's a great feeling to get, as an audience member. Even when the movie doesn't say that out loud, we feel that. The meaning that emerges. It wasn't done well in Signs, but the core premise in the abstract is very good.
If had been almost anything other than water, it would’ve worked
I still love the crap out of this movie. I think it has been unfairly beaten up.
I loved signs when I first saw it but the more I thought about the plot the less sense it made but it was a fun spooky alien movie. He's never come close to making something as good again
This has been a common opinion since the movie came out, and I've never agreed with it. The whole water thing ignores two major explicit points in the film. First, that we (as people, and the characters) are always operating with very little information as best we can. The movie doesn't explain the water issue, but it doesn't explain a thousand things, so what? We have no idea why the aliens are here in general. The second is the exploration of the ideas of destiny and such, without a firm answer given. Farmer Mel clearly accepts some degree of predestination at the end, but we as an audience know just a bit more to be not so sure of his conclusion, like the details about his brother learned at the recruitment center.
I agree still... signs has a certain undertone that is a guilty pleasure kind of thing. Something i always enjoy watching for the mood more than anything. Haha.
Unbreakable is arguably his greatest work, a masterpiece of comic book cinema. But the Sixth Sense is M. Night’s sermon on religion and life itself. What a powerful piece of art.
Unbreakable will forever be his best work.
They were good movies, to be sure, but they also got Shyamalan high on his own supply. Everything he made after was just not at all as good as when he was unsure of himself as a creator.
My mom accidentally let me watch this when I was 6 and I was so afraid of aliens my entire childhood. The clips still creep me out 😭.
Hey, wasn't the creepy "reveal" video in Signs taken at a kid's birthday party? Can you imagine, if only those kids were playing with water balloons, the whole invasion would have ended immediately.
Agreed because it never rains. Checkov's water glasses left everywhere. It's a shame because up until that point it's a highly entertaining film.
I’m someone who loves pretty much all of Shyamalan’s films with the exception of Last Airbender of course, I find most of his weaker films to still be fun to watch, just turn your brain off and enjoy the crazy plots and still quality thrills. His best films are some of the best thrillers ever made imo.
I'm thrilled to see so many positive comments about this film here in the comments. It's a lot of fun and a film I always enjoy on a revisit.
Every time I see this movie, I keep remembering the scary movie parodies instead.
I loved this movie as a kid, and I think it got way more hate than it deserves. Hate it for the bad CGI, or the clumsy story, but don’t hate because it “doesn’t compare to his other work.” That’s not fair. (I’m not directly speaking to this channel, just generally.)
I think the message is a good one, and even though it’s absurdly simplified I think the core rings true. If he’d been more open to critique back then, or had someone help him polish this script - or even co-write it with him - I think it could’ve been much better.
As far as his “stilted dialogue” goes, I love it. It doesn’t always work, but it undoubtedly adds to the sense of “wrongness,” like you said. I’ve never heard anyone speak about his dialogue choices in this way, but it totally works. And I think that’s why he continues to do it. The characters create a bizarre, surreal world simply by speaking to one another. It’s a great way to amp up the anticipation.
I’ve been pleasantly surprised by a lot of his stuff. The Village is highly underrated, imo. The Cabin was a sleeper hit that completely slipped under the radar. I absolutely love thriller mysteries, but it’s incredibly hard to find any being made these days that aren’t shat out by some independent studio for a dime and a roll of scotch tape. Shyamalan may not be as good as he was touted, but if he makes a thriller mystery movie I’ll be the first to set everything else aside and give it a chance. Old (?) or whatever it was called about the people who age really quickly was kind of a let down, but like Signs it was worth the time. The ride was enjoyable, even if the conclusion wasn’t satisfying.
I think Shyamalan is an example of the worst Hollywood can do to an artist. He was praised so much that it nearly ruined his career. Even though he’s still making films he’s nowhere near as popular. And the last decade or so may have been a humbling experience for him, but I don’t think he learned how to perfect his craft. Instead he just exercises a little more restraint. All because he was adored by critics for so long. Even after all his failures I don’t think he ever considered taking the time to learn how to get better. Instead he just learned how to reign in his worst aspects. Had Hollywood not been so benevolent to him in the beginning, maybe treated him as a nobody, I think he would’ve spent more time perfecting his craft and actually TRYING different things in an effort to get better. Instead he’s like a bad painter who just decided to stop painting living things and only focus on landscapes. No one can say you can’t paint an elephant if you only ever try to paint trees. He hasn’t tried to get better, he just stopped doing a lot of things he was critiqued for.
Family Guy cut away
Man: 2 tickets for the M. Night Shyamalan movie.
Movie employee: Wow. Really?
Why is it so impossible to comprehend that there could be elements on other planets that are normal to the inhabitants but harmful to outsiders? Could very much happen to us if we discovered a new place in the far reaches of the universe completely beyond our understanding
Ive always said this about the ending. Its fortunate the rest of the movie is so gripping.
If we are being charitable, its obvious M Night wanted to pay tribute to war of the worlds which had a similar but more satisfying unforeseen end to the invaders
Signs has something in it that means it COULD have been a bona fied classic but it needed about five more re-writes and a good beating to get the rocks out
The water comes from the beach that makes you old
It’s a good movie, fits in nicely with the previous two. Each are good in their own way!
You get me dude, nobody understands why I hatewatch every single Shyamalan movie that comes out but you put it to words perfectly.
The last act was scary at the time, but watching the hand on the fire grate painted the same is so, so shonky now 🙈😂
I never minded the ending of Signs, because almost everything up to that point was great. Honestly, I don't remember ever questioning the ending.... it was just fine, especially for the time. I think we trust movies too much to make sense and it takes away from the whole experience.
Loved this film and the ending!
They were not aliens...
Did you even understood the movie?
the movie was never about aliens. it was about redemption, losing and regaining your faith. you dont mention that once.
dont put in flash scenes from the ring or other horror movies without warning.
M. Night bought into his own hype and then almost immediately exposed his shortcomings.
re: ''switches up his formula before he fades out of relevance'' - or, he could just switch up the media. if he produced an anthology series twilight zone or black mirror, the formula could be a strength instead of a weakness
