    The Desert Sleds are some very nice looking bikes no arguing that! And if my appearance on a bike were number one consideration I would have considered one too ...but looks are way down on the list for what I want on my ADV bike...I want capability! Lighter weight great suspension and handling ...I need to be able to pick my bike back up on the trail even on a hill when exhausted ...so finally I had to get the 690 enduro ....close to 150 llbs lighter than the sled (with all your racks and guards) yet same horsepower ...I did add a roto pack clone mount for extended range but I honestly rarely will ever be that remote from fuel stops so it was more a whim I leave it OFF the bike 95%) than a need. ... btw my ankle is screwed too but I found when I first started riding this bike with the brake lever adjusted very high I could basically just lift my foot off the peg and cover the brake pedal using my leg....since then I have redone the brake and bought much more managable boots along with a ktm dongle allowing me to shut down abs in the rear and have developed my technique to where I am pretty good finaly with the rear brake...I actually smoked the oem pads within 1500 miles and so now I am using these kevlar pads just because they dont get as hot or work as well lol....which is good as I tend to drag the rear brake a lot on some very fast fireroading I like to do

      Good to hear. I feel the H&B engine guard is the best choice for protection. My DS is a 2019 and when I researched in detail the H&B, all install attempts on the internet had failed, with hassles on returning. I figured the fit would be resolved in the future. I do like the Evotech frame sliders I have. The T- Rex engine guards are excessive, but I’m big on protecting the bike. I have a street bike l prefer for pavement and the DS truly see’s crazy advanced trails. I live in a dream area for off roading. I will be taking the DS on TransLabrador type trips. 😁

      @@uyktran No, I don’t think the T-rex engine guard is necessary with the Evotech slider on pavement. I went for extreme protection because I’m doing crazy advanced off roading where I live. Hi, thank you for that vid.
    It contributed to my decision to buy a sled and in what safety-modifications to invest first. Nevertheless I would like to know you experiences about dropping the bike - and did those mods and addons what you expected?
    I dropped my bike a couple of times in the dirt and once it was thrown over while being parked. Despite my sw-motech crashbars and Barkbusters, so far I lost two brake pedals, had to exchange the Barkbusters after it fell on the tarmac of the parking lot, bent the break-lever, and even needed a new display holder (the first one, being plastic, was broken by the bent Barkbuster).

    • @ChrisBrown-dd9nn
      @ChrisBrown-dd9nn Год назад +1

      My handlebars took a really good hit recently in an off-road wipe out. Basically, the EP hand guard on the right side bent, but didn’t brake . The folding brake lever was fine. All I had to do was bend the hand guard back into position. The EP sliders have worked well for me on a couple of off-road wipe outs…. no damage. Lucky me, my foot brake lever isn’t even there anymore as I have the rear hand brake mod… which works really well. Yes, I’ve bent the stock shifter… a folding one would help.

    I would like to understand how the rotopax were mounted. I understood something like "seabow" mount, but a google search didn't anything related with this term. Do you know more about it?

    • @ChrisBrown-dd9nn
      @ChrisBrown-dd9nn 2 года назад +5

      To mount the Rotopax I installed the Hepco & Becker C-Bow plate onto the Hepco & Becker large carrier. I’m pretty sure you can mount the C-Bow without the carrier. Then, I fastened a Rotopax mounting plate to the C-Bow. To get the desired positioning, I used a dremel tool to grind away a small portion of the back of the frame of the C-Bow where I mounted the bolts from the Rotopax mounts. Then, just attach the Rotopax. It works great and is very sturdy.

      They are CRG Arrow mirrors mounted onto Evotech hand guards with Rottweiller Performance Quick Flip mirror mounts. You can get the mirrors & mounts together as a kit from Rottweiller. @@ChrisBrown-dd9nn Thanks, I'm still considering one and have a few questions if you could answer them.
      1. Have you laid it down Like in your driveway on purpose, and then tried to pick it up by yourself again? I have read there a lot heavier than they look and especially top heavy
      2. Does it have the power and gearing to cruise at 75 to 85 miles per hour, Even with a passenger? Like about 300 pounds total.
      3. I've also read the heat can be unbearable coming off the of engine in summertime. It can be a 115゚ here but I would not ride in that weather however there however riding weather would often get up to a 100.
      Just wondering what the warmest temperatures you've written in and Brittany in and what your opinion or experience is.
      Thank you, I appreciate it.

      No, I haven’t laid it down in my driveway. I’ve wiped out on a crazy trail, but was on a steep hill and picked it up with a friend. I really believe I can pick it up by myself and I’m no superman. A perk compared to the big adventure bikes. 75-85 mph with a passenger, I think so. I haven’t rode double on the DS. I got a sweet HD for honking it or riding double. It doesn’t have serious torque. Like, it won’t wheelie by just hammering the throttle. It does get hot, sorry again, to date I’ve only seen extreme heat on the HD ( mojave). It runs nice , but it’s not a racer. Overall a good bike that suited my needs. Heads up, finding neutral is a bitch and clutch ain’t smooth in my opinion. I’m happy with my choice.

      @@ChrisBrown-dd9nn I saw HR and Bad Brains at CBGB's in 1987 right about the time I bought my first bike; an 81 honda xlt 250 enduro. Yesterday I pulled the trigger on my second bike; (it only took me 34 years) a 2021 desert sled. Looking forward to doing some of those mods. Great work Chris. Thanks for the inspiration!

    I mean it'sfine if you put looks over capability in deciding on what bike to own but please dont lie to yourself and others by actually trying to claim that the Desert Sled is "lighter than adventure bikes" At 461 pounds all gassed up it is 10 pounds heavier than Yamaha 700 Tenere and within few pounds of vastly more capable (than the sled) KTM 890 adventure R....Yes of course there are larger displcacement adventure bikes that are heavier but that is apples to oranges....anyone looking into buying an adventure bike does not need the BS...for that matter the very term "adventure motorcycle" can cover a really broad range to include MUCH lighter motorcycles like my KTM 690 Enduro less than 350llbs totally gassed up ready to go with even some extras bolted on. Same horsepower by the way as the Sled ....btw I am just guessing but all those guards and racks? Thinking it brings the bike up to 500llbs right into the realm of the the Suzuki Vstrom I got rid of when I bought my KTM

      No arguments from me. For you, and the vast majority, definitely. I specifically set this bike up for marathon remote trips. Most times, crossing the continent on pavement to start the remote ride. Functionality is important, I agree. But, for me, it’s gotta be a bike I like. I do cross continent trips on my HD, but it’s bare bones. Not a boat of a touring bike. It’s how I like to ride. Different strokes for different folks.

      No louder than most aftermarket exhausts for Harleys. I live in a rural area and ride where few people are. Nobody’s ever complained and I’ve only had complements. 🙂
