Mr. Redzic's Bach performance instantly set a new standard. Then again, everything he plays is a benchmark. The transcendental quality of the music wherein the artist seeks only to be its tool of conveyance...is always there. Mr. Redzic, IMO, is already a classic. First, the recorded sound here (which the artist has personally commented on below regarding the acustics, equipment and positioning) sets a new standard in quality. Rarely have I heard the classic guitar (and certainly this is one heck of a guitar he's playing). These recordings are a great artistic statement seeing the tremendous care taken with the sound and understanding and shaping of the interpretation: both intelectually rigorous and simultaneously warm and heartfelt. His signature legato and dynamic shaping of the phrases into an organic whole. This is the kind of musicianship that separates just great technique (so much here on RUclips) from great artistry. This piece is not simply played or interpreted: it is a powerful musical statement that, I conjecture, would bring joy to Bach's heart as well (He might say "Wow! My piece sounds even better here than I imagined it"). Thus, it takes genius to interpret genius. I follow Mr. Redzic'c performances with great delight and I see that his upward spiral is never ending: each new interpretation shows his growing maturity as an artist. That recording at 23 of the Chaconne showed him up there "shining among the stars"...but it seems he's destined to become a galaxy of his own. How wonderful to see such artistry. How wonderful to see how he uses the latest technology in the service of the finest music. True joy and beauty in the 21st century.
Centuries ago, when this "Scot's Church" was built in Erfurt for Scottish mercenaries, the architects and builders must have had no idea that two geniuses, Bach and Redzic, would one day come through its doors to justify every drop of sweat ever spilled in its creation. Magical and, dare I say, Divine! PS You taught me how to play the BWV 998 with a relaxed left hand and musically, and now you have inspired me to learn this one. Thanks.
What I see as amazing in Mr. Redzic's playing is a kind of "musical rhetoric" in much the same way as a narrator in a literary work takes on a particular voice or intonation which establishes an intimate effect with the reader. Certain writers (the great ones) despite using the same language which is the common domain of all, produce the effect of using that language in a totally different and unique way. Somehow, the way they combine the same words produces an immediately recognizable style or artistic personality: the same holds true for composers (just consider, for example, the differences and delights between Bach, Brahms, Barber, Bartok and one recognizes in each unique musical qualities without the need of hierarquical rating or ranking since the whole point of art is difference, diversity and variety). That is what I would mean by "musical rhetoric" which in turn allows us to "feel" and "appreciate" the style without being able to easily conceptualize it in words. Likewise, the above metaphor, applies to great interpreters such as Mr. Redzic, whose musical rhetoric is as unique as any of the greats (you name them) and his prowess may actually take him into a horizon beyond or on another level. In this Prelude, notice how he begins it on a grand, majestic and sweeping scale worthy of Bach and plays it as a prelude within the prelude to the second fugal (that it sounds like a fugue is one of Bach's many miracles) in the style, say, of the Preludes & Fugues of the Well Tempered Clavier. His interpretation is like the stone interior of the church (a most evocative setting for the recording): Mr. Redzic plays the notes like a sculptor beautifully shaping the marble. This naturally brings to mind Glenn Gould. But despite the keyboard clarity, this is always a colorful guitar. For me, nothing could be closer to the way I envision the ideal sound for Bach's own carefully sculpted and crafted music. So, Mr. Redzic's phrasing is his rhethoric: what is amazing is that the effect which goes from phrase to phrase (apparently I see he can change his color palette and dynamic range without shifting his right hand - but to speak simply of his formidable technique would be pointless since all is music here) links together in such a way that he simultaneously conveys, in his emotionally-charged musical statement, a clear and coherent "musical vision" of the two-part contrasting structure of the piece. The final result is one of fullness (never mind the cliché about it sounding like 2 instruments, which is not accurate - it sounds like one guitar that has become, in the hands of this artist, one much bigger and greater instrument.
deep honour, warm regards, and a resonant BRAVO MAestro ! ! to your awesome interpretations Mr Redzic:, what a beautiful delight to listen a magnificence of care; the finest quality of your renditions of the great musical composing minds of current humanity, have been mastered internally, expressed externally and projected integrally, recorded with wise distinction and crafted to convey the whole range of deepness to which they refer.... i feel you performed in such a sound and round understanding of the understatements necessary to disappear into the veils of vibration, meticulously calligraphy of precision within the careless flow of a master hands, all of them needed for the emotional coloured evocations inscribed within the phrasal rhythm of Monsieur Bach to appear... THANKS FOR IT !!
