    Probably have massive undercut on the bottom because you didn't give the stick enough time to actually get fusion so it just heated and melted there. There are hardcore pores in the weld because of slag inclusion since you let it cool down too quickly. That weld will CRACK and snap eventually. Bad bad bad welding

    If the cost of a high quality welding machine wasn’t an issue, what would be the best machine to use? Plasma, MIG TIG ARC or GAS?

    • @andreas_swissry
      @andreas_swissry 8 дней назад

      That depends absolutely on what you are welding! TIG welding is for tiny welds especially in stainless and aluminium. MAG welding is for mild steel of all thicknesses. MIG welding is the same technology but using an inert gas for stainless, aluminium or special steels. Stick welding is often used outside the workshop where you can't take the heavy equipment. Submerged Arc Welding is for heavy duty industrial use. Laser and Plasma welding is similar to TIG welding. Oxy-Acetylen equipment is used for welding, cutting and brazing.

    • @isobutylformate8287
      @isobutylformate8287 11 дней назад +3

      @@aaronspicer1093 Yes it has to do with technique and it is actually quite easy. Need to remember few things. The rod or electrode metallic part is what sticks and not the outside coating(flux). People will tell you to hit the rod or strike it like a match or move it right and left after hitting work piece to prevent sticking and start the rod, a nice person may tell you to take a deep breath and relax and just put the rod there it will start. None of these work when you don't know what's actually going on. It actually has to do with maintaining the arc. When a rod is successfully start the arc you see is just the ionized air and because the welding rod and work piece are of opposite charge they attract each other. Now a rod won't start if there isn't enough charge travelling from rod to work piece and that depends on a few things. First thing first look at the box of electrodes/rods you will see a small box or chart on it telling you how much is the recommended current range for a certain thickness of rod that you are using. Do an experiment by setting the current on the lowest recommended of your rod thickness(I suggest begin with a thick rod like 4 mm 6013). Set it in holder at a 60° or lower angle to your work piece, basically the metallic center of the rod should be barely touching the workpiece. After setting angle, mentally prepared, relaxed, hit the rod anyway you prefer just remember that metal of the rod will stick if it is touching directly to the workpiece since opposite charge attract. The question is why it doesn't stick when we are welding then? Because there is a layer of molten metal plus slag between which prevents sticking. Don't lay a bead, just practice starting the rod and maintain the arc for 3-5 seconds on the same place. You can go lower than the recommended current on the box like 25 amps lower and the rod should start and if you can start a rod at this current then you will never have problems starting the rod. There is a catch to this, you will notice once you are unsuccessful starting the rod and retry it will stick even more and more. This happens because regardless of your angle the rod metal is now touching the workpiece a lot because the outside coating or flux is broken at the tip, actually this is where the hitting to start the electrode or striking like a match method become useful. Try hitting(slight hits first if not working then harder hits) the rod to a spare metal piece to start and maintain the arc and if you simply touch your neat workpiece with the red hot rod tip you will notice it starts by just touching when it is hot enough. This practice is very beneficial and saves you from lot of frustration in the future. The starting of rod also depends on the current, with high current it starts easily. Just keep in mind that don't go over the recommended current on the box as the rod will heat too much making it useless.
      What to do when rod sticks? Try quickly but calmly moving it right and left and if it's not starting then release it from the holder. This will prevent accidents.
      How to lay a bead? Start from flat position as it is beginner friendly. Don't try to welding horizontally or vertically. Now to lay a bead just start the rod and let it slide(drag actually) towards you, *don't pull the rod* . You don't need to make any kind of patterns like zigzag or circles yet. Let it slide towards you in a straight line. Use a *6013 4 mm* electrode and keep current around 90-120(where ever suits you between this range)
      If you got any questions including the stupid ones always remember to ask. It is about learning.
