From Dusty To Dazzling: Deep Cleaning A Century Old Parlor Guitar |

I had the privilege of being asked to do a deep clean on this guitar, and it reminded me of why I do what I do. ⬇️⬇️⬇️
This is a parlor guitar from around the late 1920s to early 1930s. I’ll spare you the math. This guitar is roughly 100 years old!
It was layered with a thin coat of dust. It had some scratches, and some bruises. The fretboard was worn, and there was a crack in the top, making it no longer playable.
This guitar had what some might consider a rough life. But if you look deeper than the surface, like most things in life, you’ll begin to see things for what they truly are.
I was asked to do a deep clean on this guitar. To remove its dust and dirt, and bring it closer to what it once was. This guitar is sentimental to its current owner. It brings back memories of the hand that put those grooves in the fretboard, and the one that wore the top’s finish off strumming and making melodies.
This guitar and the person who once played it, live on through the memories of the melodies they once enjoyed together. I’m honored to get to be a small part of its story.

This guitar is very simular to my 1903 Lyon and Healey. Notice the dotted 10th fret.
I also see a binder sound hole. That was common on a lot of Hawain style guitars

Awesome! I’ll have to do some more research on those. The customer didn’t know much about it, just that it had belonged to one of his family members. I would love to be able to get some more information to him about it. Thanks for the comment!

Could you tell us the cleaning solution you use?

For this guitar I wet the corner of my microfiber cloth in plain white distilled vinegar. Wiping it down and scrubbing it, then going back over it with the dry part of the rag, not letting it saturate into the wood. It cuts the dust away, without using chemicals on such an old finish.
