And this HJ is why your channel is my favorite. You go far above & beyond a pen & ink channel to do research, share history and educate. So clever! Bravo. The Sailor Tea Time is on my wish list now.
This video was such a treat! I love the history! Three of these inks I have written with and Kobe 34 looks like a great one to try! Thanks for the awesome video!
HJ! What a triumph! Not only am I inspired to use my Pilot Custom 823 in Amber (a tea-colored pen if there ever was one) but I'm visiting San Francisco and have just made plans to go to a nearby tea house to journal. Thank you for the inspiration! ☕
Nicely done! Thank You! I appreciate the info on the origins of specific tea, filled in some holes in my knowledge base. When I hear of Earl Grey, I always with a smile think of that quintessential Brit Shakespearean Actor, Sir Patrick Stewart -AKA Captain Jean Luc Picard of the Federation Star Ship Enterprise D, lol “Earl Grey...HOT”. Enjoyed seeing the railroad lantern and the M600 Tortoise Red. Sure glad you didn’t taste each ink as one long term reviewer of our community used to occasionally do. Some years ago at the request of friends, she fortunately stoped doing that. BTW, I enjoyed last Tuesday’s live show. Take care and have a great weekend.
I'm a big coffee guy (looking forward to that coffee inks video.), also an occasional tea drinker, but I don't drink tea as often as I should. The only ink here I have first hand experience with is Lie de The. I got it in one of their smaller 10ml bottles because I picked up the bigger bottle of Cafe des Iles (ironically, a coffee inspired ink) and didn't really care for it, too dry for me, so I didn't know if I might feel the same way about Lie de The. Turns out it's a great ink! I like it a lot, so maybe when I use up the 10ml, I'll have to pick up the 30.
if I had to designate any ink to be my "signature" ink it would have to be Lie de The. I almost exclusively write in green inks, most of my pens use green, its what I journal with, take notes etc. Which would sound like it would be a signature colour use, and in many ways it is. But for a signature, or a letter to the dearest of friends, Lie de The is always in my nicest pen. It is a truly lovely ink, most inks aren't just right for me, finding the right green has been a long and tiring quest, but Lie de The is perfect for what I use it for, in which it is unique.
I am seeing that us fountain pen people have some of the same love of things. I don't feel alone now, I have just as much Chinese Pu erh tea in pressed cake form as I have inks. I also love the rich history of tea. I used to be crazy about coffee. This type of tea has replaced coffee for me. Tea ceremony every day before I go to work in my stressful job as ICU RN.
Good morning, HJ! Was not aware that there were so many "tea" inspired inks! Very interesting! One of my favorite inks that has a sort of "tea" color is Noodler's Pecan. LOVE that ink! It's brown, it's orange, it's COOL! Will have to sample some of the ones you show in the video, they are COOL too!
Great job putting the diverse colors with corresponding teas. I learn from you and I thank you for the efforts you take. It is fun to watch and learn from your journeys.
I like this video. I especially like the historical research you put into this video, photos, vintage artwork, paint brush swatching, descriptions of your connections to each tea, and the sun shining through that glass tea cup is beautiful. Now for a video with suitable pen pairings. Cheers. Hey, The Hobbit!
Thank you for the brilliantly conceived and executed review. Well done! I enjoyed seeing THE HOBBIT in its Foyles Bookshop dust jacket. Tell me of your greenish painting of the bathers. Lovely! For some reason it called to mind Klimt’s “Mermaids,” “Flowing Water,” “Goldfish,” “Sea Serpents,” and “Water Serpents” paintings. It sent me to my books to refresh my visual mind. Always stimulating. Thanks again..
Thank you so much for watching. I really appreciate it and I’m really glad you enjoyed the video. I’m also glad you like my painting. There’s a funny story behind it. I had no idea that it was as large as it was until after I bought it and then we had to rent a van to get it home, but I’m really quite happy that we did. It’s by Stephen Bagnell. “Forest Gathering.”
A delicious video! 😄 Lie de the is on my list of brown inks to try and it looks great! Well, all those inks look great! So many different and beautiful colors!
It’s easily the best ink swatching video I’ve ever seen! And it’s so much more than just putting down some ink: a lot of history, personal memories and thoughts - brilliant! Thank you!
What a great video! So much more than just swatching some inks! I so appreciate the research you put into your videos, along with lovely commentary and visuals! So clever to combine history and elements of tea to enhance the ink discussion! Well done (again)!
I love the LTB Oolong! Fun fact about Oolong tea - the term "Oolong" literally translates to bird-dragon and means an unexpected result or happy accident. It is named Oolong for the fact that the tea is in between a Green Tea (less oxidized) and a Black Tea (more oxodized). My favorite type of tea :)
Lennon toolbar has a series of tea inks that I am currently in love with. I particularly love the burnt orange tea ink. Yoseka stationary carries them just thought I’d mention it for anyone who’s interested.
Your description of tea fields brought to mind the most beautiful vista I have ever seen. I was doing development work in the LangTang Valley of Nepal. The “Valley” floor starts at 3500 meters, which is about the height of Mt. Hood. So, the Nepali use the term “Valley” very loosely! Anyway, on out way back down the Himalayas we rounded one of the many corners and came upon the series of green, green terraces of tea, cut all the way up the mountainsides across from the road we were driving on. Every shade of green you can imagine, going all the way up, thousands of feet in the air. And scattered through the tea fields were women in deep red and orange saris, harvesting. I didn’t have a camera or phone with me, but the picture is emblazoned in my memory. Every time I have a cup of tea, I close my eyes and remember the beautiful places where tea comes from. 💚
Two of my favorite things in one beautiful video! I can’t wait to get some of these bottles to put in my Benu Earl Grey special edition pen. Now to just narrow down to which… I love these type of videos you make with a mix of pens/inks with a theme.
Such a thoughtful overview. Sailor Tea Time has been on my wish list for some time, and I recently acquired the pen, so I must have it! But I love each and every one of your choices. Bravo!
Glad it was helpful! I love this video! It is so pretty and was such a challenge to make. It makes me happy anytime it resonates with someone. Thank you so much!
greetings from Malaysia, i love this video with its interesting facts, my favorite color is green. i learned not too long ago, the color combo of green and grey is actually called Xanadu, though the first tme ive heard of Xanadu is the home of Mandrake the Magician from the comic strips years ago. thanks again HJ. :)
I love your ink videos.... the best I have seen and it's so enjoyable ...plus you really picked the gorgeous ones... love it that you kept to the few and also conclude with your choice :D. thank you!
Lovely video. Nice history of tea. Taiwan and Japan have lovely tea growing areas. I love sencha/ green or masala chai or English breakfast with milk or Assam or Darjeeling. Thanks for the ink suggestions. A glass of Turkish tea is amazing too. My grandparents used to have a samovar of tea that lasted until the end of each sabbath. I had forgotten that…
Nice, very nice. I would slightly emphasize that ALL tea came from the SAME plant species. It's ALL in the processing that creates the different types of tea. Oh, and oolong tea is actually from China's Fujian province. There is a bit of difference between Chinese oolong (more black tea, thus the original meaning "black dragon") vs Taiwanese oolong (more green tea). And I blame the British for adding all the extra stuff to tea (like sugar, bergamot, etc) because by the time they get the tea shipped to them, only the black tea cake would survive the journey, and those probably need the embellishments after the journey. :D
@@HemingwayJones You are welcome. I hope to join you tonight at your livecast. I happen to speak Chinese, so feel free to ask if you need some Chinese material translated or confirm some Chinese translations.
Thank you Hem for posting this today! I know it’s not just for me, but I’m sitting here in the waiting room while my husband is in the hospital since yesterday (heart issues). He is having an angiogram right now. And this is a great distraction while I wait.
@@HemingwayJones Thanks! He did really well. They did clean out one artery, 70% blocked. They put a stent in it and the rest were minor. He should be released in the morning, 🙏🏼 I really enjoyed the video and those inks are beautiful. I love green inks! Especially earthy ones. Have a great weekend!
Such a wonderful video! I loved the background introduction, the inks, the tea, just perfection. If you are ever in Edinburgh, i highly recommend Rosevear Tea. They have three little shops but the one on South Clerk Street has a couple of tables. There the shopkeeper will brew any of the hundreds of teas they stock for you. I recommend to Jo Sencha because it is the most glorious bright green and tastes of the smell of cut grass in the very best way. The shop itself is a haven of tranquility and tea treasures from all over the world.
Great, informative, poetic discourse on ink. Just ordered "Lie de The," since I'm a huge fan of that color wave. Also recommend Birmingham Pen Company's "Distressed Leather" for a great, beautiful-shading, light earth-hued ink.
Very interesting video with several amazing-looking inks I hadn't even heard about! The only one of these I have myself is Lie de Thé (and I agree that it's a great ink!). I have two other tea-related inks: Sailor Shikiori Rikyu-cha, which is a fascinating colour, or rather many fascinating colours - it changes a lot while drying, and it looks completely different on different papers; and a different Earl Grey themed ink, Diamine Earl Grey, which I got despite the name - I don't like Earl Grey tea at all, and I am not at all happy that it's the default tea here in Norway (which sadly is very much a coffee country, not a tea country). *My* default tea is black tea without any added flavours (with a dash of milk and no sugar), and many places here don't have that. But Diamine Earl Grey is a lovely grey with a very interesting chromatography, which makes it perfect for ink art.
Wow! What an amazing video. The whole ink game has always been quite overwhelming to me, but these colors really intrigue me. I see these as samples in my future...
I'm a huge tea drinker and a newbie fountain pen user so I really enjoyed this video! By far, the green tea ink is my favorite. I'll be looking for that one tomorrow to add to my collection. Thank you!
What a lovely video. What a match, Tea and Ink. I do have to say that Earl Grey is my favorite tea and ink, at one point, I think I had it in several pen, and realized that I really need to give it a rest for a little while. I might try to give some of the greens that you mention in the video a try, I am loving some good green teas lately. I have been watching @wumountain videos lately ... Also I have been going to the Asian markets to get some good quality teas at good prices. There is one in Everett called the 99 Asian market that I like to go to.
'Lie de The' is one of my favorite inks too. It might even be my favorite non-blue, non-blueblack, non-black ink. It's a very good ink, btw, scoring A & four stars, on my ink tests (durability). The color is, IMO, the color of a dried stain of black tea, Assam tea. The 'Earl Grey' ink has the color of fresh black tea (as it should), possibly with some lemon. Mint Tea is not 'Tea', but the color is perfect.
@@HemingwayJones - Oh! 🤨 Makes me wonder if the mint tea I drank as younger also was green tea + mint? I suppose it could have been, though I doubt it, because the mint taste was very strong and green tea hadn't really made its way into the West yet. But I suppose it could have been. Another thing that surprise me is why Morocco would have anything to do with green tea? Unless it's a modern thing?
Wonderful video, now I have more to seek and add to my collection. Thanks, HJ! Mmmm, I can smell the aroma of fresh brewed green tea awaiting the start of my next set of writings ✍️ though I only have Platinum Forest Black for now - it also has tea in its formula.
Watching on a gray, rainy day with a robust oolong in my cup. (There’s a local shop which specializes in oolong-truly, a tea for ritual, thought, and experience. So, I had a bit of a needle scratch on the record moment when I heard you mention adding sugar. What?!) Perhaps you’d enjoy the book Green with Milk and Sugar.
Extremely interesting, very informative, I like that ... another one of those Tim....I even dare from time to time to drink a matcha tea prepared on the traditional way with whipping and all the bells and whistles the Asian way very relaxing and refreshing
My first tea-themed ink was PenBBS #342 Matcha Ice. In a broad nib, it's light, but legible with lots of shading. I also have Lie de The and several bottles of the LTB tea inks. I'm thinking about what ink I'll put in my 823 after the Pelikan 4001 Royal Blue it came with. The seller didn't want to clean out the pen again after he'd just sent me a video of a writing sample. LOL
Lie de thé was one of the first inks I bought when I took an interest into fountain pens, a couple of months ago. It looks great, flows perfectly in any decent pen, and it's fun to rediscover it when changing nib size. Love that ink. I did vape a Chaï tea e-liquid once ; tasted awful, and it made the whole room stink. Didn't try to write with it though.
Great video Hemingway. Tea is probably my favorite drink. Glad Atlas Stationers is carrying Lennon Tool Bar inks now! Want to try them and Vinta inks soon! Do I smell a coffee top inks or fruit inks coming perhaps?
Hi HJ. Interesting video. Just a quick question, what is that store you were browsing Diamine inks at in the first few seconds? It seems like someplace I might also want to visit lol.
Hold on, let me put the kettle on! As a big tea drinker (British parents & my family in England) and of course, an ink collector, I was waiting for this video with great anticipation. How niche is that!? You’ve provided some tearrific ideas for some new inks! Beautifully presented topic with stellar b-roll! Nicely done. Too bad I baked the scones on Tuesday. We buy imported clotted cream so the batch has been eaten. Are you a Devon or a Cornish method of scones and cream?
Thanks, HJ. Very nice inks! I had a problem with my Lamy Safari EF for the first time today - it wouldn't write. The converter is a little under half full and I thought maybe too much air is causing the problem. So, I turned the piston down until a drop of ink fell onto the paper towel and then I wiped off both sides of the nib. Then after writing harder than normal a few times spreading out the tines a tad, it started writing again. I wonder what caused that? I'm using Diamine Polar Glow ink.
@@HemingwayJones No, it has a little sheen though. It seems like the ink at the nib tip dried out. It never did that before, though I haven't had it very long. I ordered a Pilot Custom 912 w/posting nib that should be here today. I also got an 80ml bottle of Diamine Oxblood and two A4 dot wirebound notebooks. Maybe I won't have any problems with my 912. If I do, I'll just wet the tip of the nib and see if it fixes it.
HJ! You say in many of your videos that we often clean our pens too often especially when changing ink colors, I was wondering if you could make a video on your preferred method of changing ink colors especially in piston filled pens?
Great video, HJ. I have a bottle of the Herbin Lie de The` and agree that it is a wonderful ink. That Kobe #34 is an amazing color! Inks based on the color of tea... What a clever idea! However, it does make me wonder; is the ink drying on the paper or is it steeping? 🙂
Hello Hemingway, I discovered the Sailor Moroccan Mint Tea ink a few days ago and I am obsessed with it, but as usual when this happens, I can't find it available anywhere online. Please advise if possible! I have got to have it! I have a bit of a penchant for French things, and I like the Herbin Lie de Thé very much, but I also think the Earl Grey is lovely. I drank a lot of Earl Grey tea when I was in college. Please help me find the Moroccan Mint Tea if you can! Thanks so much! This is a wonderful video! Lisa
@@HemingwayJones Thank you very much! I will check on JetPens for the ink! I love the pen too! I really like this "favorite" inks format Hemingway! You videos are so tastefully done! Lisa
It's an herbal tea with some medicinal properties. The Freshpak Rooibos brand is one of the most common and favourite Rooibos brands in South Africa and is available on Amazon. So, if you want to try it, I would love to know which ink colour (and brand) you would match to Rooibos. Also, thank you for interesting and unique videos. Love the channel!
I'll be honest, I didn't think this one was going to be that interesting. And I say that as a tea drinker. I'm happy to say that I was WRONG. Great video, H.J.! Quick question: the glass pen with the blue swirls you're using to demo the inks - may I ask what that is? I'm unfamiliar with it and very curious. Thank you!
So I guess that Diamine's Earl Grey is a tribute to the Earl himself then not the tea? My absolute favourite tea is Puh Er Oolong with Mate. I get it from a Finnish company and it's superb. 😇🩷🙏🙌

Thanks so much for watching. I am very glad you enjoyed it.
Well, this made me want to try some teas rather than inks 😅
Teas are cheaper! Enjoy!
I'm a tea drinker, so I enjoyed this interesting video. Teas and inks so beautifully rendered!
Wow! What an amazing video. The whole ink game has always been quite overwhelming to me, but these colors really intrigue me. I see these as samples in my future...
Glad it was helpful! Thanks so much!
I'm a huge tea drinker and a newbie fountain pen user so I really enjoyed this video! By far, the green tea ink is my favorite. I'll be looking for that one tomorrow to add to my collection. Thank you!
Thank you! This was so interesting & some gorgeous inks!
Glad you liked the video!
Awesome! That is too fun. I am so glad you enjoyed this!
Thanks for watching as always! Moroccan Mint Tea is a mix. Green Tea base and some minty leaves. It’s a tea cocktail.
@@HemingwayJones - Oh! 🤨
Makes me wonder if the mint tea I drank as younger also was green tea + mint?
I suppose it could have been, though I doubt it, because the mint taste was very strong and green tea hadn't really made its way into the West yet. But I suppose it could have been.
Another thing that surprise me is why Morocco would have anything to do with green tea? Unless it's a modern thing?
Wonderful video, now I have more to seek and add to my collection. Thanks, HJ! Mmmm, I can smell the aroma of fresh brewed green tea awaiting the start of my next set of writings ✍️ though I only have Platinum Forest Black for now - it also has tea in its formula.
Thank you very much!
Watching on a gray, rainy day with a robust oolong in my cup. (There’s a local shop which specializes in oolong-truly, a tea for ritual, thought, and experience. So, I had a bit of a needle scratch on the record moment when I heard you mention adding sugar. What?!)
Perhaps you’d enjoy the book Green with Milk and Sugar.
Extremely interesting, very informative, I like that ... another one of those Tim....I even dare from time to time to drink a matcha tea prepared on the traditional way with whipping and all the bells and whistles the Asian way very relaxing and refreshing
Thank you so much, My Friend! I am glad you enjoyed it.
LOL
A fun video, thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Gorgeous video! I actually ordered the Lennon Bar tea the other day. Hope to have some matching pens soon.
Hope you enjoy it! I love that one.
Only 5! I lost my bet. Good thing I was only betting with myself. :-) I really liked the historical and cultural content on this one. Thanks!
Thanks so much! I couldn’t remember myself. It was a lot of work putting this together.
Great video Hemingway. Tea is probably my favorite drink. Glad Atlas Stationers is carrying Lennon Tool Bar inks now! Want to try them and Vinta inks soon! Do I smell a coffee top inks or fruit inks coming perhaps?
Thanks so much. Me too! That was great to hear!
Hi HJ. Interesting video. Just a quick question, what is that store you were browsing Diamine inks at in the first few seconds? It seems like someplace I might also want to visit lol.
Kinokuniya New York at 4 Bryan Park! Thanks for watching.
Enjoy your videos - books, teas, fountain pens, paper, and ink!
What brand paper do you use especially when showing inks and and pen compatibility?
Thank you. I used Rhodia Touch in this.
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it. I don’t really eat Scone and My Helen has a gluten allergy. So sorry to be a bummer.
Does the ink have shimmer? It can clog the feed. Otherwise it may just need clean.
Great video! What size brush are you using for your swatching (#10)? I love how it pulls the full color.
I’m unsure, but it is around 5mm across, flat, sable. Thanks!
Hello Hemingway,
I discovered the Sailor Moroccan Mint Tea ink a few days ago and I am obsessed with it, but as usual when this happens, I can't find it available anywhere online.
Lisa
Thank you, Lisa! That ink came from Jet Pens, I think. I wish I bought the pen.
@@HemingwayJones Thank you very much! I will check on JetPens for the ink! I love the pen too! I really like this "favorite" inks format Hemingway! You videos are so tastefully done!
Lisa
Amazing video ❤
Thank you!! I appreciate it!
That moracan mint tea ink reminds me of the gold used in Muslim temples.
I can see that!
HJ, have your ever tasted South African Rooibos (Red Bush) tea?
I have not. Sorry.
Thank you!
Thanks John! I’m glad you liked it! The glass pen is from J Herbin. It gives you a pure expression of the ink. Thanks for watching.
@@HemingwayJones Excellent, thank you!
This is the best content on the internet!
Thanks so much! Sad that no one is watching it.
What a great idea! I know you’re not here to sell things (thank you), but is there a list of these inks with links? Wanty…
Great video,don't drink those inks.
I’ll try not to.
Don't go drinkin' yer ink!
Again…
Your acting is terrible! Thanhs fir the info😂😂😂
Acting??? What Acting?
@@HemingwayJones you drinking tea!! By the way I appreciate you making this kind of videos!!
My pleasure. I was just drinking tea. I wasn’t acting. It was very hot. I don’t drinking tea and many of those were for the first time.
Hi. Tea always reminds me of fountain pen ink. I have written with tea and coffee, it works well. Very nice indeed Hemingway.🤗🦘 All the best.
Thank you! Cheers!
So I guess that Diamine's Earl Grey is a tribute to the Earl himself then not the tea? My absolute favourite tea is Puh Er Oolong with Mate. I get it from a Finnish company and it's superb. 😇🩷🙏🙌
I think it’s a tribute to Grey! I had trouble finding an Oo Long. Sounds great.
