I have to watch this video every night, just so I can relive not only the truly wonderful sound of Dragon, but return to my own younger years. I was 21 when this concert was happening, oh to go back in time. 😁 For me it was always Marc’s superb voice, his stage presence, the simply magical harmonies from Todd and of course it’s all about the bass 💕. I was heartbroken to hear of Marc’s passing, and I remember sending up many prayers that day for Todd, and all the family and friends at what would have been a very difficult time. To this day Dragon will always have a very special place in my heart, and their music has been with me through all the good times and bad, and for that I thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank goodness for YT. and for this channel, so I can soak up each and every video I can find, many many times. If anyone builds a time machine, count me in. 😉xx
Vale American Al - Alan Mansfield - a fine musician, writer and producer. The production on the original 'Rain' recording sounded like nothing else at the time - what a drum track and sound.
40yrs later after having met this great band as a fan and then what I'd call a social acquaintance. When I first set up this channel for Todd who now controls I love love it...I don't come here often but our beautiful Marc there is no one like him vocally.........Thank you Todd for keeping it all alive. So many many great memories :) xoxo
The Australian band that never was. Dragon took me to places unknown they were that good. Thanks to our New Zealand cousins from all Australians thankyou. Goosebumps watching this.
still refuse to believe that this era of rock is slowly getting more obscure. my dad got me into bands like dragon, aussie crawl, inxs, and a bunch of the best bands to roam this earth. todd has to be my absolute favourite bass player, and marc, the greatest frontman ever. great band, great music. my mum and dads third date was watching dragon at our local club in the early - mid 90s. dad said they were the best band he has heard live, apart from aussie crawl. my bandmate is pretty good friends with todd actually, and repaired his basses for him, and theyre now good friends, and hopefully can meet todd soon with the help of my bandmate since todd is my absolute bass hero
Saw Dragon live at Collendina Country Club in 87. Unforgettable. Marc had a lot of problems, even on stage, but when he came to play there was no one in his league. Utterly mesmerising.
47:14 *This man in 2021:* “Kids did I ever tell you about the time I got on stage to sing with Marc Hunter?” “Yes grandpa, you’ve told us a thousand times!”
I was actually at this concert. Adored Dragon from the get go. THIS TIME. Cried when Marc Hunter died. One of the top 5 leading rock singers of all time. Thankyou for the memories and for the magnificent music ♡
Me too and every so often I still do (cry that is) I loved him vocally there is NO other that can compare.............he was one of a kind in many many ways both vocally and personally miss him very much :(
Sue .. it makes me angry that musically Dragon superior to INXS. Not only that, Hutchence blatantly stole Marc Hunter's swagger and had Dragon had a more switched on manager in 1977-78, they would have been one of the world's best bands. The whole Dragon story even though it has some high points is sad. Yes, playing gigs around New Zealand and Australia was great and receiving a massive $700 a week in 1978 sounds great. However, they should have been up there with Foreigner. Foreigner and Dragon share a history as they both debut in 1975 but, being US based Foreigner forged ahead.
Yep! Yep loved them (5 x lineups now) Marc was the VOICE pardon the pun..........Love Foreigner yes they could have been same if more discipline back then..........x
Yeh.. ‘Musically superior than INXS’? That’s your hogwash opinion, not anyone else’s Troll! You’d probably say that they’re more than Chisel and even Hunters & Collectors and AC/DC. Gees, u wouldn’t know shit from clay. Even Split Enz was NZ’s best band ever, not Dragon. I’ve always thought Dragon was a real classic great recording band. Not that great live. I saw them a cpl of times live in the yrs of 1986-88, the last being at the Jet Club on Pittwater Rd in Dee Why. And each time, I was disappointed in them performing live. Favourite song of theirs ‘Dreams of Ordinary Men’ (which they were pretty ordinary, I must say), followed by ‘Rain’ and ‘Are U Old Enough’.
In 1984, I saw Dragon at the Werrikimbe Music Festival. They were fantastic. They were just massive at that point, and the Body and the Beat album was huge and it was everything. Dad got talking to a roadie or someone (I'll have to remind him of it, after all this time, and see who the Someone was), was probably having a beer with him, and said we were invited to a backstage party. It was only the most exciting news, ever, up to that point of a teenager's life. BUT, WE DIDN'T GET TO GO because, for some reason unknown to me, we all had to go home because my aunty had a headache. I had been a fan of Dragon since I was a little kid, growing up watching them on Countdown, and was devastated and cried for days, every time I thought about it. I never got to meet them and tell them how much I loved their music. Even thinking about it now, it still has the power to bring tears to my eyes. It was so disappointing to a young teenager, as anyone could imagine!
Marc was such a hard case . Was cracking up when he introduced the band ....., comes to Todd ...” and from Taumaranui “ ... awesome . Love love love Dragon. Had a giggle reading how they did a residency at the Golden Dragon in Fiji 🇫🇯 (made me smile / I’m from Fiji). Vinaka boys 👍🏼

Ahhhh.....check the passports .....I know Mark and Todd....Mark is Maori...and Todd is from Te Awamutu.....last time I looked....and asked them...they were Kiwis....feel free to contact them and ask them for yourself.....Jared.....
What a wonderful find on YT. I have this on VHS and had it professionally converted to DVD about 10 years ago with menus and everything. This is probably Marc Hunter at the pinnacle of his career. As a massive KIWI Music fan I highly recommend this to anyone who does not know them. BTW - Marc & Todd are KIWI's not Australian. Australia tries to lay claim to many of our groups - ie Split Enz, Mi-Sex, Dragon, Crowded House etc. but they are all ours!
Yes I agree some people try and claim ownership to NZ bands. The 1st 3 are NZ bands who had great success in Australia. BUT nothing annoys me more than Kiwis or others saying Crowded House is a NZ band. How can a band formed in Melbourne with 2 Australians and 1 Kiwi be a Kiwi band??? Neil Finn has always been quoted as saying Crowded House was an Australian Band. Bones Hillman is another Kiwi who got his gig with Midnight Oil when ironically Neil Finn recommended him to the band. He has been on bass since 1987. Are you claiming Midnight Oil as a Kiwi band?
@@kiersey732 Neil Finn never quoted Crowded House as an Australian band. Nick Seymour did, as a joke or a bit of sarcasm, as he is Aussie just like Paul Hester (the drummer) was. But Neil did quote that they are an "International band act". Big bloody difference.
@@kiersey732 Well, at least u got a great laugh out of it 'Simon Kirsey'. Ya bloody Troll‼️👍 PS. If the site allowed me to post an attachment on here of your laughing comment response, I would.
Wow, I was at this concert with my then gf and friends, probably the best Live concert i have been too. I spotted my self at various times in the video dancing away. Great memories. Thankyou Marc for the great memories and rest in peace legend.
I also had this on video and I played mine to death too. I just loved this band so much and always went to see them when ever they visited Adelaide. So glad I found this concert.
Fabulous show and thanks for posting. To imagine keyboard and writing whiz Paul Hewson would be gone so very soon after this concert at just 32yo is utterly tragic, sad and unnecessary. Can't understand the message in that one. Rest in peace Paul. What a talent. Sometimes I think these poor blokes were jinxed. One of the greatest ever Kiwi-Oz bands. Thanks again for posting this awesome footage.
Yes that was so sad about Paul I was heartbroken like many others and he passed exactly 5 months after this concert poor man and he was in a lot of pain with the scoliosis in his back and arthritis and could have ended up in a wheelchair and his condition was inoperable Rip Paul 😢 gorgeous man
Also the song cry in the film clip Marc points to Paul and another one he glanced at him.eerie about this song when marc sings you only live once and you might die young sadly both Paul and Marc did
I was at concert - left side of stage seat in audience & though I tried my best for over 6 years - Cry & fooling with thunder in Rain, Paul still died. Now it is called by Paul "when your time comes".
I grew up in NZ adoring Dragon and finally got to see them live at Coogee Palace in 1996 when I moved to Oz. Dream came true for me. ❤️🙏 I also went to Good Vibes concert at Selina's. Magic moments to treasure.
What a great talent and singer Marc was and it resonates today the songs are magical and I’m proud to have sung rain with the great man on stage in Brisbane many moons ago

THANKS AGAIN for providing so much great content on RUclips. I am an American who has become a fanatic just in the last months thanks to your channel. Would sure love to own more of this music on CD...or at least MP3.
The best ever. My fave band, still love them.Marc will live on forever. Always love hearing Dragon songs on the radio or watching him on here. First saw them in Launceston, Tassie back in 1977, was hooked. ♥
I was the security coordinator at this concert and what I will say is...the concert was like no other meaning that people were so into it they were singing so loud they needed to turn up their microphones and cover the sides because the crowd singing was causing major feedback and echo and other stuff it needed to be fixed. ONE THING Im not even sure if the band even knows to this date, that there was 3000 to 4000 people outside doing the same!!. Ive only ever seen this with Bon Jovi, Roxette and Def Leppard! Todd Hunter (Marcs brother) was and still is the backbone and creator of this bands success where him and the band were so connected with each others ideas, it made ABBA husbands/wives combo look stupid. Todd on top of not just being one of the most nicest guys I have ever met in the music industy, but he was more concerned with us Security if they are ok like they had enough water than his own band members for fucksake..haha 👍 Todd should you read this, mate, offer to play at big Aussie national event like AFL grandfinal (at a discount) just to get major coverage and back in to peoples ears so people are reminded you guys can play...imagine the whole 90,000+ crowd all singing 'RAIN' and 'April sun in stralia' together???? Todd, the world is waiting my friend, show them you guys are back on your bikes..and crusing the country (and dont forget the small West Australian towns with a small gigs, ...just not too small, Jim Barns realised this when supposed to playing small group in Carnarvon in an awesome mining pit Amphitheatre they have which sound reflects all back where word was out was free...and they had over 22,000 people fly, drive, pushbike ride from all over WA just to go to a concert!! So big infact, the night before concert they had to get in earthmoving equipement to make area double its size at 2am and was still not big enough but sound amazing! 🍺🍻 Cheers my friend, to you and band members, and remember that Marc is resting and watching from above. ALSO.... Furthermore make sure that all your videos and video hits are marked under your official channel as not long ago I was in contact with a well known female artist who had a music clip which was on someone else's page that had 68 million views of which she wasn't aware of nor getting any of the money for which was around would have given her $480,000 to put in to getting the band back together with brand new equipment so this was eventually sorted due to my interaction and she was compensated and has now gone out and 75% of what she had been given and bought brand new Band equipment, crew bus and small truck and is about to commence Aussie tours at all towns around Aust.
I was 21 at the time, great gigs, great times. They were brilliant live and then the Body and the Beat album was released, brilliant. I met an English girl named Beccie ............. gorgeous blonde ............ I had to maintain international relationships! A nurse of course!
Roberts red jacket features in one of their other videos - I’ve seen it before . Let me look for the video . Paul Hewson , legendary song writer . Marc , you should still be here . 😢
I used to go and watch dragon play at grannies nightclub in Auckland and talk to marc and Todd as we entered the club one of the best bands to come out of nz tradegy to lose Marc.
I love this video. Marc Hunter was the greatest. INXS was my 2nd favourite. Tragedy for both like a kick in the stomach, but at least we can enjoy videos like this.
Like this? Check out Dragon's "Live in the Seventies" on that well known Swedish steaming site [it's on the others as well] ;-) - Dragon's first flush with Mr. Hunter in awesome form. Lotsa favourites there as well a ripping 12 minute track from a Double J concert called "Get Up and Dance". Never released commercially and great really LOUD. Marc does a Jim Morrisonesque thing at the end - whoa! Fans wont be dissappointed. C'mon, Todd, release a sequel album to this covering other seventies Dragon tunes!
I really wish you guys would issue this on cd, possibly with the rest of the show if it still exists. I wore my old cassette copy out years ago. A digital version would be fantastic.
Me too, i loved seeing them in Sydney. Best band I have seen and heard. Must be 40 years ago or more and I can still picture the suit I wore and how much I loved this band. X Next fave is Bon Jovi x long live live music that takes us back to our youth xx
I always wondered what terry did after xtc...dragons bonused a great drummer...i read here in the comments about bad management... Xtc also suffered from that...rip marc... You seemed a great showman... I've only heard this band for the first time today
He was not drummer from XTC.. It was the x drummer from JEEFO TULL. I know this because I did a few weeks with DRAGON when KAMSHA aka AIRSTRIKE were doing shows with them around Sidney 1986.Roadie, Lighting / Sound
Well the Drummer they had back in 1986 used to play with JEFRO TELL , Maybe he played for XTC in the real early days . The only other drummers was Lyn Bucannon and the original drummer who I saw when I did lighting at the Oz for Africa
@@christopherjamessimmons3781 he was xtc's original drummer from the early seventies till 83...he only did one tour with dragon...for about 18 months, or so he told me...not sure if he recorded in the studio with them...terry never played with jethro tull...his lad Kai is also a drummer for October Rage... check them out...from Melbourne, i believe
Great video, Did the 1989 Melbourne Live ever come out on DVD? Mark has such a great voice. Just finished reading the book chasing the dragon wow what a great book
Hi there . Am hunting for the book , tried everything and everywhere . Did our local council tip shop and went through hundreds of books .... and the search continues
Dragon, Midnight Oil, The Angels.... Those hard CORE Coastal Tourers, who SOUNDED AS GOOD, IF NOT BETTER, L.I..V...E then their recordings. Dragon, I must have seen a Dozen times, With... Magic, Cry, Wonderworld, Speak No Evil (to start) Tbh, Australia NEEDS, a Mod Pop History Museum, so THESE ROCK ICONS ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN
RIP Marc Hunter, Paul Hewson and Neil Storey. This is a truly great Kiwi band, should have had worldwide success. Just some bad management, bad choices, and bad luck.
Weren't we so lucky they became ours.......! My favorite band of all time. Thought it would pass 40 years later but no still love them all. old and new Draggles 1 2 3 and 4...........great stuff :) x
I read you reply after I poste my comments. You are way more succinct when you say " ...some bad management, bad choices, and bad luck." Luck is everything. Are you aware that Foreigner and Dragon came into existence at the same time and share a similar background. Foreigner however, being US based through luck had a massive selling 3 million debut album and within 2 years were playing in baseball stadiums. Dragon could also pack them in and had they been a US band would have had Foreigner type success. What a shame .....
Um NO I didn't say that "Frosted" others did. Seb Chase did well for the time. Steve White Brilliant manager. I've loved loved this band for over 40 years and while I respect everyone's comments I am so NOT biased I personally welcome all feedback on my "beloved Dragon". Yep Foreigner love love that band. Saw them here 2 yrs ago...........Dragon were not as disciplined back then. But agree they had all the makings of..............miss our Marc to "ME" he was the singer of all time :) unique just different. I hope you enjoy all the official channel has to offer. Many many fans gave me all those beautiful videos............Army of Dragons :) xoxo
Sue .. I read tour reply and edited my comment. I will say this Dragon, like the Angels had great Australian management by they were gutless. Marc Hunter is allegedly blamed for their failed US tour. Marc was smashed and at a showcase gig in Los Angeles whee rumour has it, Mick Jagger attended, Dragon stuffed up. So What ,.... In contrast, \look at the AC/DC's success. They pushed and perservered. Imagine opening for the world's hottest band in KISS. Had Dragon had strong management they would have insisted that Dragon support Heart in 1978. Dragon's pop/rock music would have supported Heart's music - songs like - Magic Man and even Barracuda. Bad Luck - like The Angels in1980 who had a gutless manager and feared that US management would overtake him and lose his money and prestige. Why didn't anyone push for Dragon to support heart and not Johnny Thunders who was third rate.
It’s the same with Split Enz they never really made it overseas. They were briefly popular in the U.K. and the USA. But they were big in Canada Australia and NZ.
Hey everyone. I've uploaded a better quality version of this video to my RUclips page. The audio is far superior the video quality is about the same. I digitized my orginal VHS version. I wish Todd and the Dragon folk would release a high quality DVD of this concert. ruclips.net/video/T70Kpq0xnfA/видео.html

This is a gem! Thanks for uploading, I've been looking for this for years!
classic concert, Vale Marc Hunter.
Todd on top of not just being one of the most nicest guys I have ever met in the music industy, but he was more concerned with us Security if they are ok like they had enough water than his own band members for fucksake..haha 👍
Todd should you read this, mate, offer to play at big Aussie national event like AFL grandfinal (at a discount) just to get major coverage and back in to peoples ears so people are reminded you guys can play...imagine the whole 90,000+ crowd all singing 'RAIN' and 'April sun in stralia' together????
Always loved this from when I first saw it aired on TV , and wanted the video for years. Thankyou so much for uploading , classic.
Great. An actual *band*.
Wonderful! thank you and the picture quality is tremendous!

Great band!
Awesomeness mwah ☆☆☆☆☆
Thank you
I was 21 at the time, great gigs, great times.
I wish they were both still here both sadly taken way before their time I wish I had have met them especially Paul I heard he was a sweetheart
Incredible, wore the cassette tape out
The loss Todd and family must feel, it’s hard enough dealing with it as a Dragon fan….
To have all 3 of your younger brothers & only siblings to all die before yourself very sad for Todd I am sure & rest of family
Todd has lost 3 brothers before their time, I can relate having lost 3 also to drugs and alcohol. God bless you all fellas, great people all. ❤
Gosh what a SHOW!!!!!
I used to go and watch dragon play at grannies nightclub in Auckland and talk to marc and Todd as we entered the club one of the best bands to come out of nz tradegy to lose Marc.
Speechless! ❤❤❤❤
Portugal
I love this video. Marc Hunter was the greatest. INXS was my 2nd favourite. Tragedy for both like a kick in the stomach, but at least we can enjoy videos like this.
Btw, Marc Hunter was Kiwi and so is Dragon. INXS are Aussie. Big difference.
Went to primary school with Paul Hewson and his friend Kevin Walden
Great friends & hope his best friend has a great life if still living or had a great one.
Also you yourself are having a great life.
Kevin repainted Paul's grave
Yes Paul is now free of pain
watch from 47:05 seconds, who is this? and Marc, completely unfazed!
Dragon performed on new year's eve at the owhanga pub many years ago... brilliant
Thanks Todd, Mark use to live opposite me in Kings Cross. Victoria street 😘
C'mon, Todd, release a sequel album to this covering other seventies Dragon tunes!
would love to see some vision from the 1986 and 1989 tours
Mark is such a great front man
Todd is like the Brian Wilson. I love Dragon sooooi much
🤣🤣🤣😂
I've only heard this band for the first time today
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Chambers
He was not drummer from XTC.. It was the x drummer from JEEFO TULL. I know this because I did a few weeks with DRAGON when KAMSHA aka AIRSTRIKE were doing shows with them around Sidney 1986.Roadie, Lighting / Sound
@@christopherjamessimmons3781 he certainly was xtc's drummer before dragon. He quite xtc because they stopped live performance
RIP BIG FELLA
ive heard marc original wanted to call the band the hunters instead of dragon at the time the hunters was taken
2022
Great video, Did the 1989 Melbourne Live ever come out on DVD? Mark has such a great voice. Just finished reading the book chasing the dragon wow what a great book
Hi there . Am hunting for the book , tried everything and everywhere . Did our local council tip shop and went through hundreds of books .... and the search continues
@@taleinz1 have you tried to order from the authors web site, Jeff Apter or an Ebook?
Dragon, Midnight Oil, The Angels.... Those hard CORE Coastal Tourers, who SOUNDED AS GOOD, IF NOT BETTER, L.I..V...E then their recordings. Dragon, I must have seen a Dozen times, With... Magic, Cry, Wonderworld, Speak No Evil (to start) Tbh, Australia NEEDS, a Mod Pop History Museum, so THESE ROCK ICONS ARE NEVER FORGOTTEN
You know this is originaly a band from NZ..right?
And all three lead singers are well over 6 foot 👍🏻. RIP Doc and Marc 💙🙏🏻💙
How many live dates did Terry Chambers play with the band?
Hey everyone. I've uploaded a better quality version of this video to my RUclips page. The audio is far superior the video quality is about the same. I digitized my orginal VHS version. I wish Todd and the Dragon folk would release a high quality DVD of this concert. ruclips.net/video/T70Kpq0xnfA/видео.html
Great video. Did the 1989 Melbourne live ever go to DVD? Cheers. Mark had a great voice . Just finished reading the book chasing the dragon. Wow what a great book
