Be wary of any Turk player with the same score as you, while you are mid Feudal and the Turk is still in Dark. This is usually a good indication that you should attack early on, since chances are, that he is doing a fast imp.
I do not have that much AoE MP experience, but I was under the impression you could just say: "Be wary of any Turk player, you should attack early on, since chances are, that he is doing a fast imp." and it would still be true.
+Franz Luggin Well, it really depends on alot of factors, the map, your civ, the enemys civ (in this case a turk) and so on. So your moment to attack is all about timing, because when attack, your eco suffers as well, because you are spending resources on an attack which could be spend on your eco. This means the enemys eco should be damaged more than yours at the end of an attack. A feudal rush on arabia is viable, but a feudal army on arena not so much. So "attacking early on" maybe should be changed to: "prepare appropiate". Example: On Arabia, any feudal army will suffice. On Arena, maybe fast castle, and wait him up with a sea of knights plus monks or mangonels.
Yes, I know about the basics, being efficient in your resources when it comes to fighting and raiding. Arena or Black Forest do kinda forbid a flush for a player like me, that is true. Still, if you have few late-game bonuses, Turks are generally not the enemy you want to let become powerful by waiting around, even though there are probably scenarios where this rule doesn't apply, since there seem to be no absolute rules in AoE 2.
+Franz Luggin The general consensus is indeed that you shouldn't wait around with Turks, but sometimes it is worth the risk, because just like you said: there arent absolute rules haha. I thought it was something worth noticing since this is a score video and I actually really like to fast imp myself ;)
This is definitely true. I've been experimenting more with Fast Imping with Turks on BF, and I can say that it's a really good map for the fast imperial, so be especially wary of a Turks flank on BF.
Just got this game during the steam summer sale and am loving it, always saw it sitting on a desk at my grandma's but never played it lol. Love your videos they're so informative and are 10/10 for a noob like me wondering what is what. This question about what in game score actually is one i've wondered many times so thanks for answering, you've got yourself another sub!
Great video, Spirit! Really clarifying ;) I will repeat what other people have suggested: maybe investigate the Battle Event in the post-game timeline? Keep up the good work!
One thing I wonder about: On the tab for the technology score in the achievements menu, you see a percentage of research. No matter how many technologies I develop, I never seem to come close to 100%. Do you know how it's calculated? Is it a percentage of all possible technologies, including ones your civ doesn't have access to?
If I'm not mistaken it's a percentage of all available technologies from that civ only, that's why sometimes a player with 40 technologies researched has a higher percentage than someone with 42-44 technologies... It's really hard to achieve 100% since you'd have to develop every single technology (for example every dock technology in Black Forest seems like a waste of time and resources). Try playing a game with "Starting age" set in "post imperial" and you'll notice every player has 100% research, no matter the civ. Hope this helps :)
+Santi Ruejas (Leeroy) Interesting, because I've sometimes tried to get 100% by researching all technologies from all buildings, including from monasteries and pointless docks. I never seem to be able to make more than about 80%.
KorKhan89 Hmm I may be wrong, but it's the only explanation as why someone with a lower research count has a higher percentage... There's also the possibility that they changed it in the HD version (as I'm recalling all this from the classic version)
im pretty sure it's explained in the booklet that came with the original aoe&aoe:rise of rome&aoe2:kings&aoe2:conquerors anthology. it gives you points for resources gained, spent, map explored, unit kills, buildings, wonders, and - from units killed
Yay, I got featured at 0:54 and 11:10, it was an awesome match!! SalvadorAllende was insane, it was a very close, but we lost at the end... I have seen the record a few times to learn more :p I hope one day I can find you again in the lobby xD. You and your videos are great!
BTW: The killcounter doesn't differ between enemy and allied units so basically you can push your score with teamkilling using units who are able to teamkill e.g. Onager or Bombard Cannon
DUDE the part where you can peek at the 50 point score drop to Feudal age and comparing it to how you're advancing can tell you what frickin playstyle your opponent is likely going for: Can we take a frickin second and respect how god damn smart that is? That's like an old-ass mechanic listening to you start your car and saying 'haw yah that there's the number four there, he's not exhausting the unburnt fuel properly.' That is top of the pops skill. When you and your opponent are both so good you can read each other off of innocuous cues like that. On a COMPLETELY different level than new players. People can get THIS good at the game. It blows my mind.
The funny thing is that a lot of my 1v1 ranked games have military score very low. I think the main reason is that the decisive battle is often in castle or early imperial age, especially if nobody is stonewalled. And a lot of people resign the moment they have an army in their base and nothing to counter it.
I play TGs all the time and I often find myself looking at the scores to see how well my team is doing, but it is never a good way of doing that. So many times I have gotten teams where our score is usually (slightly) lower than the other team but in the end we always manage to come out on top
You know, I was thinking, aoe2 is quite literally a better game because of your videos. I want to know something? I type it in and no matter what the question, you have a video on the topic. It adds so much more depth to the game. It actually makes me wonder if this is a blind spot for a lot of developers and that it should be something they should be more proactive about.
I never really understood why there even is a score count. It is only really utilized as the final goal in one gametype, and that type isn't used very much. In pretty much any other gametype, it's pretty useless. It might tell you who is the most dangerous on the map or whatever, but does so poorly that you can't ever really tell who has the advantage solely based on that.
anyone else think spirit should do a top 10 best civ User Interfaces? Just the other day I took the time to look at the civ uis (i always knew they had unique ones, but I never took the time to actually notice them all, some are really good)
Two of my favourite units are Kamayuk and Slingers *with* Couriers :) The other day I was in a game where one guy called the Kamayuks "waste of gold, gold pikes"... pffft lol But I miss the 10% extra speed.
I CAN'T SEE THE THREE BUTTONS YOU HAVE BOTTOM RIGHT. I jsut have the red/white/blue, and it never shows up score. F4 saves the campaign rather than opens score...been searching for ages how do i get this?????
you forgot to mention the drushing. you know if someone is drushing by score somewhat easily, even if you did not find their gold and checked for missing 10 or found their barracks.
what if someone makes a magyar huzar for 90 resources then researches mercenaries so its costs only 80 and then i kill it i killed a unit that costs 80 resources for him but de facto he did pay 90 do i get 16 or 18 points??
That must be in contrast to the XP gained by killing units or buildings in AoE3 then, which is 10% of the cost put towards creating the said unit - a Musketeer, for example, costs 75 Food and 25 Coin, and with 100 total resources, has a Kill XP of 10. Russians get Musketeers for 25% cheaper (and with 20% less attack and HP as compared to the base, unupgraded Musketeer to balance them out) - but still have the same kill XP. The score works kinda the same, except with 1% of the resource value I think. So assuming that and the AoE2 score system work similar to each other, maybe Mercenaries decreases the kill score for Magyar Huszars [created after the technology research] because technically their 'base cost' has been modified? It's pure speculation by me at this point :p
I wonder what would happen if you made a trigger which spawned 30 units for the guy in 1st place on the score every 10 minutes after the 70 minute mark.
This was really interesting, thanks. Can you also answer how the game decides who the Most Valuable Player is? It doesn't seem to be the person with the highest score or the one with the most kills.
I know this comment is old, but the MVP score seems to just be Military Score + Military Score just from buildings (so destroying buildings counts double). Because of this, it is possible to be MVP while having the lowest score in every category.
When im playing with my friends ( we live in a 30 km radius from each other), and we play against 2 or 3 AI's we always get lagg and disconnect lol, and even worse now when one gets lagged out the other 1 desynchronised the game making it crash :(
I feel like scouting score should not be based on how much you scout but what you scout. Perhaps a scouting score based on the percentage of value of enemy buildings seen, plus a percentage of the gold, stone, and animals seen. (wood wouldn't be counted as there's so much of it on most maps that scouting wood lines isn't really done past the edges of your base). That way if you don't see an enemy barracks, you will drop scouting score, and if you confirm that there are no enemy barracks, you will still have scouting score.
I had a really weird game once. 4v4...We won by defeating the other team...the weird part: they were WAY ahead on points, nearly double. I'm guessing they killed more of our units, to get the higher score, but, we just refused to retreat.
Thanks for mentioning the AUS/NZ and EU lobby names. Seems to be a lot of people out there that do not understand this concept. Basically every lobby I've created with AUS/NZ in the name there is always some foreign people joining. So annoying..
What is the turtle symbol and the coins symbol on the left of score of individual? Eg: 11:19(turtle), 8:19(coins) Please help as soon as possible. Thanks
The background music is a bit too loud on this one. Its kind of distracting. Thanks for unravelling the score myth, I have been wondering about its intricacies since I started playing.
Here's an interesting question. What if the AOE II armor system was changed from static numbers to the percent system like AOM? I've noticed that the way combat differs between the games is that AOE II units have comparatively low hp and high attack, and rely a lot less on bonus damage. It certainly seems like the combat in AOE II is a lot less like the rock, paper, scissors style of AOM, but could the percent armor system even work in AOE II?
That depends entirely on the units in question. Yes, the knight line is arguably the most powerful line of units in the game simply because of their impressive hard stats, but they are still easily countered by spearmen, especially pikes and halberdiers. A Halberdier gets more than 30 bonus attack against a cavalry unit, boosting it's attack from unimpressive to one of the most undeniable hard counters in the game. Sot the rock paper scissors element is still in effect, and is especially obvious with "counter" or "trash" units.
just discovered an i love it ^^ your Channel is really nice and you aswell :) I love AoE so much...i played it since my Childhood :D mostly the aoe2 ^^
Recent addition in the Expansions. I think it means that said player with the asterisk is you, so nothing other than a personal indicator. As if one needed a reminder of their username XD
Hey spirit of the law!!!first at all I just want to say thank you because being a new player you have helped me a lot, even if I still lose in online matches :( and also I would like to ask what do/did you study??? (I just think you are super smart and Im curious :D ) You might not read this but any way thanks.
After playing games without it, I think that game score is unbelievably useful and is actually sort of like cheating. There are many times in an RTS game where you aren't sure where you stand exactly. Like perhaps after having a huge battle, you may run into a situation where you aren't sure if you should counterattack or if you should try to take advantage of a possible military population lead. Score tells you that pretty definitively and it sounds like they've given a lot of thought to how score should be done because basically everything you described seems very correct.
When you did the tribute thing, if you tributed to one player, and then they tributed the same amount but to a different player, according to that logic, would that mean that only the original player tributing would not gain score? As the 2nd player got +100, then tributed, which doesn't lose score, so the 3rd player then also gets +100 resources (and whatever score that translates to)
I think I showed a similar situation to what you describe at 4:37, and that was based on a real test I ran with triggers. It actually works out that neither player 1 or 2 have their score change, though you're right that the 3rd player benefits the most because they have a net gain in resources.
Hey Spirit Of The Law, Do you know how the technology "Spies" affects the Score? The game says that Spies costs 200 Gold per enemy Villager (and I believe it still costs 200 Gold if there are none of them on the map). Because the cost of Spies fluctuates during a game, I was curious about whether the amount that it adds to your score is always the same, if it changes based on the amount of Gold it costs at the time of research, or if the value it adds to your score changes based on the number of enemy villagers on the map. And in Regicide, does Treason add to your Technology score? Also, does the Chinese technology cost reduction bonus affects the price of Spies or Treason? Do Chinese technologies contribute less to the Technology score? [subtly asking for Chinese civ overview] Thank you for working hard on your videos and for reacting to you followers!
If it is impossible and you have anymore of you or others vs computer AI matches, can you include in game score analysis alongside other commentaries please?
I have been thinkin of using the score as a way of out-metaing someone....in a 3 way freeforall. people tend to team up on the one who is already winning (with exceptions of course). and the intital basis for the decision of who is "winning" is score...and once someone has STARTED attacking, they usserally dont switch. so in a 3 way freeforall. perhaps its for the best to do really well, only kind of well. otherwise you get ganged up on. and the potential advantage to a better eco is completely countered and then some since its 2v1. a way to make it less-bad is if you use the rules for the score to make your points add up less so, dont explore as much and putting even more resources into trash units might help (even more so then usserall i mean) that way. as the game goes on, your opponents score goes WAY up because of how much wood/food they are destroying of yours...but your score only minimally goes up. so the third player s more likely to assume that if they dont help you, that they will end up fighting your opponent after he has absorbed your resources....thus, more likely that YOU are on the winning side of the 2v1 battle...and perhaps by the time they realise that you were not in as bad a situation as they thought....it will be too late
I was listening to smooth criminal before this video and now the beat of the background sound kinda fools me into thinking it is still playing it. What song is it, btw? You just link the place where you got it.

WHOOOO. New Spirit of the law vid :)
How do discounts fit into this? For example, will goth infantry yield less points when produced and killed, due to the goth infantry discount?
I wonder what would happen if you made a trigger which spawned 30 units for the guy in 1st place on the score every 10 minutes after the 70 minute mark.
This was really interesting, thanks. Can you also answer how the game decides who the Most Valuable Player is? It doesn't seem to be the person with the highest score or the one with the most kills.
The one with the highest military score.
This! Pleaaaaaaaaaaase!!!
I know this comment is old, but the MVP score seems to just be Military Score + Military Score just from buildings (so destroying buildings counts double). Because of this, it is possible to be MVP while having the lowest score in every category.
I am playing this game for 16 years now and never saw the hint in the achievements how the score is calculated o_O
Perfect videos that I can fall asleep too 😴 while still learning aoe 👍
on black forest 1v1 games i often win with a much lower score because i have like 150 units qued up whilst my opponent has not
So you play Goths?
or he is just makes military late and has alot of resources to spend.....
or none of both cause that is how you play booming maps??
Ideally you should be able to do that with any civ, not just goths.
When im playing with my friends ( we live in a 30 km radius from each other),
and we play against 2 or 3 AI's we always get lagg and disconnect lol,
and even worse now when one gets lagged out the other 1 desynchronised the game making it crash :(
I feel like scouting score should not be based on how much you scout but what you scout.
At first, I read "In-Game Store" and imagined AoE2 with microtransactions, lol.
It costs $200 to be able to use Paladins IG
only 14.99$ for a pack of 2 Cobra Cars. Or spend 49.99$ for 4 Cobra Cars!
Boy, those 49.99 sound like a bargain!
Friederich Huepfenstolz
glad you appreciate the offer. Would you like some extra 500 Food at the start of the next Game for 3$ while we're at it?
I'm basically ripping you off now!
What about the end game stats, it seems that there is no way to get 100% researched. Is this because of unique techs?
I want to downvote for the low-ground castle near the end there... but I just can't do it.
Great video! I love it!
Well, if you watch 30 videos on a channel and they're all good, you can pretty much assume that the 31st is good as well! ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
For some reason this video did not show up in my subscriptions
I want to know how team score is calculated in an FFA, when 2 players are not mutually allied.
Thanks for mentioning the AUS/NZ and EU lobby names. Seems to be a lot of people out there that do not understand this concept. Basically every lobby I've created with AUS/NZ in the name there is always some foreign people joining. So annoying..
The game is made for fighting. Buildings are there to give you something to destroy, so it doesn't surprise me the score is calculated that way.
A turtle for a player whose computer can't keep up with AoE2... I'm glad they added it, but... are they running it on an actual toaster?
Hey spirit,
For your next vid, recreate the lag shown in this video on aoe2 DE. We can appreciate how much better net code is now
8:00 wow that looks really broken for high level players, I had no idea you could spot instantly when the enemy clicks up
Another excellent video
Hey look! An awesome youtuber!! :D
What is the turtle symbol and the coins symbol on the left of score of individual? Eg: 11:19(turtle), 8:19(coins) Please help as soon as possible. Thanks
I mean, the video is for that you sucker
This guy is awesome!
what happens to the score if I sell/buy resources at the market. Especially late game BF situation
Is it weird that I expected this to be about the music?
just discovered an i love it ^^ your Channel is really nice and you aswell :)
I love AoE so much...i played it since my Childhood :D mostly the aoe2 ^^
Sometimes I see an asterisk next to my name in the score.
*: /
What does it mean?
Recent addition in the Expansions. I think it means that said player with the asterisk is you, so nothing other than a personal indicator. As if one needed a reminder of their username XD
Spirit, please make a video about input lag.
Does anybody know, in a team game, who gets that little badge or medal? It is not always the person with the highest score at the end of the match...
When are you doing a Chinese Civ overview?
how does one zoom out this much in the game?
It's auto depending on what monitor you have, though there's something in the Steam workshop that says something about changing but idk
Hey Spirit Of The Law,
Do you know how the technology "Spies" affects the Score?
[subtly asking for Chinese civ overview]
Thank you for working hard on your videos and for reacting to you followers!
If it is impossible and you have anymore of you or others vs computer AI matches, can you include in game score analysis alongside other commentaries please?
still no answer for what triggers a battle event?
We need some SotL gameplay!!!
you forgot about trading if you sell/ buy res you gain points
Best way to know if you're gonna net rushed is by checking the enemy score in Feudal age xD
I'm surprised he is shift clicking. I thought that came out in DE. I guess I was unaware of shift click all those years?
has been in age of empires 1.0
I was listening to smooth criminal before this video and now the beat of the background sound kinda fools me into thinking it is still playing it.
What song is it, btw? You just link the place where you got it.
The song at which time in the video?
Could you please do me a favor next time and reduce your background
sound a tiny bit? It's not that I don't want to appreciate the huge
effort you put in your videos! I just felt a little bit distracted
sporadically.
0:58 the one right after the opening.
Now that I you noticed me, senpai. Please make more videos of you playing, I miss them x-x

Thanks, I noticed that now you're posting the names on the video. i was going to congrats you there ^^
