People lived aboard ships for months on open seas in appalling conditions and died in large numbers. But there was something inside driving them that made them fling themselves across the void. Now it is all gone. They talk about how the astronauts will fare psychologically the long voyage of 14 months, whether they will be able to withstand not being able to eat pizza and have a social life. If you want to go to Mars, you should be ready to spend 14 months in a 6 feet by 3 feet coffin with life support with no redundancies and an overwhelming chance of death on the way. Those are the people that make the leap, not these softies and their ground crew who know that they are perfectly fine on the space station but are worried that they don't have a backup lifeboat for a few weeks and making such a big deal out of it. We should have had a thousand astronaut deaths in space by now to get mentally immunized and treat risks and death with contempt.

By that logic, the US is one of the worst countries in the world because of the Iraq war. 250,000-300,000 civilians died over the course of that conflict due to US damage to critical infrastructure. Russia created a unique kind of culture through art, music and literature. It's heartbreaking really that they prefer authoritarian leadership whether via the Tsar or Lenin/ Stalin and now Putin.
