Nice comparison I always look forward to your input & the test course. You put it through its paces for sure. This just reinforces the simple is good thing. Sure, but I've still always fixed it with spacers. It skips gears under enough resistance, which I would call an issue - but you can absolutely ignore it and just drive it, which is what I did on this video! Cheers

With the driveshafts connected and properly shimmed, AR44 is a great axle. Large steering range. Use them on my comp trucks. Especially good with Vanquish ring and pinions.
Thanks Scott, good info and I agree. I didn't know the Vanquish gears fit the AR44 axles, though - missed that when I read your post before. Good to know! (Also, you're quite good at explaining things!)
@@RCTNT they make a standard 8/30 set and an under drive set along with their own 6 bolt locker. Definitely worth the upgrade once you’ve worn out the sintered stock gears.
I was torn between these 2 for my 5 year old twins. I chose the basecamp soley because of the portals. Picked up two for $360 each. I cant wait to take my boys crawling.
What I do like more on the Deadbolt is that the tire do not rub the body right out of the box, and I am terrible at trimming. Axial should slightly modify the base camp body so it does not rub with torsion movement from the suspension. Any reccomendations on that?
Really, trimming is the best answer. It's possible you just haven't had the right tools. Try these: amzn.to/4dsm1kC The curved ones especially will help, but short blades are far better than long.
That dif is like fingers down a chalk board 😂 Been contemplating the deadbolt, as like the open style bodyshell, but after seeing the chassis in more detail, I think i'll give it a miss. Not saying it doesn't perform etc, but feels like the pocket would get hurt upgrading it Lol. Thanks as always 😍👍
We'll see! I don't how how much it'll take to get the deadbolt to a comp level.. Well that's not true, actually, I do know and it's about the same for any rig. But for local comps, quite honestly I suspect wheels and tires would be enough to make it competitive. We'll start there next video and after that we'll look at basic upgrades for both to see how they perform with similar mods.
So for 50 you get a more attractive body, portals, better radio, metal links and bigger contact patch with the wider tires. Not sure I'm seeing the value in the deadbolt unless you are a diehard straight axle person.
Thanks! I ignored the clicking for the sake of fair evaluation of the new rig. I will deal with it the same way I dealt with it on others - see this video here from the SCX10.3 JLU build, same problem, same solution: ruclips.net/video/Hi4HLd21s98/видео.html
I just picked up a Basecamp for my kid. I was having second thoughts and was wondering if I should’ve gotten the Deadbolt. From what I see in this video, I think I made the right choice. That being said I do like the body of the Deadbolt better… Thanks again bud!
Hi Craig love the channel. Quick question. I've got the Deadbolt with stock 35T motor. Am I better off swapping to a Reedy SC480X(removed from ecto) esc or leave the stock Spektrum 40amp? Cheers
Depends what you want from the vehicle. Going to a higher quality motor in this case will do more than changing the esc, though if you do go to the 1080, you'll doubtless appreciate the tuning it offers. I've written a guide for the wp-1080 to help you with that, by the way: rc-tnt.com/how-to/hobbywing-wp-1080-brushed-esc/ Older but still quite relevant. Happy tinkering!
@RCTNT Thanks so much! Yes was contemplating another HW fusion 1800kv which went into my ecto but will use what I have for now due to $. Thanks again 🙏🏽
@RCTNT Hi mate have you used Injora SS high clearance links for SCX10ii? Rear lowers are 10mm longer eye to eye. Is it matter of cutting 5mm of each plastic eye fitting? Cheers
@aorchotika I haven't, but it sounds like you might need a link riser if it's for the uppers. Actually you said lowers. In that case, for no cutting to be needed, and assuming you want to keep the same castor (not that it really matters on the rear unless you have portals), you'd also want 10mm extra on the uppers.
I think this is the case, especially since building some tamiya models recently. Progress may not be as fast as we thought it might be, but rc cars are definitely better and more capable than ever these days!
I would say the Base Camp is worth the extra money if you plan to ever add a winch. The SLT3 is actually quite good for that with its momentary toggle for the 3rd channel. That being said, the Deadbolt is great for the money and you can do well with $50 for RC crawler upgrades. I agree metal wheels and/or some weight down low would help performance. Then I wonder if a link riser in the back would help with the forward drive when it's wanting to lift the front wheel. I'm curious why go higher turns vs a lower tooth pinion? Maybe this one is already at 11 teeth?
I like Holmes' approach of 'volt up, gear down' and starting with a higher turn motor when it already feels fast helps keep it reasonable for crawling. You could certainly just drop a tooth on the pinion instead, assuming it has that space to spare (haven't checked yet). Performance wise, my suspicion is the deadbolt will be the better crawler over the base camp if both have similar running gear and upgrades, but I could be wrong! I'm looking forward to finding out!
@@Andy_Yates I like 4s but don't go higher than that on crawlers. Smoothness for the win, but a burst of speed on tap is good to have in the back pocket!
Same battery as in the other deadbolt video: Turnigy 7000mah 50C 3S pack. The remote is good. Allows all needed adjustment for this model, comfortable to hold and easy to use
Stock vehicle vs stock vehicle, yes, the BC does outcrawl the Deadbolt - but only just. Next video, we'll drop about $50 into the Deadbolt to bring them both to outlay parity and then we'll see who's camp bolt is dead based!
Well I think so, what with the portal axles, better tyres, metal links, better radio system... But the deadbolt is also great value and at metro's ebay store its $415 with eBay Plus member $25 discount: www.ebay.com.au/itm/325522788310
Not a pain at all, that's a great question. It's so good I may have to do a video on it because I don't know the answer. Not too long ago I did a comparison between the Base Camp, Ecto, TRX4 Sport and RGT Pioneer. That might give you an indication of the general performance of these things, but it doesn't give a direct comparison between the two you're looking at. Find that 4-way here: ruclips.net/video/psFjmvRa2Mc/видео.html In short, I'd suggest Base Camp for all round use and Sendero for mostly technical crawling. Going with personal preference is also quite acceptable as there's not much between them for performance.
Excellent video as usual 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼 and well, after watching it, my respect for this Deadbolt because it's just super capable straight out of the box, but I think it maybe (kind like better option) if who wants get into Axial Scx ii platform, could get some used one or second hand one for 200/250$ +o-... Because other wise, I think it maybe better option just put 50$ more and get the Basecamp... 🤔 Or... Go with my personal favorite... The RC King Element Enduro HD👑💪🏻
Element's current round of rigs are incredible, yeah! But so is the basic axial range. I'm looking forward to seeing where we can take this thing next, both it and the BC.
Naice Review. I'm very sorry that Axial is getting further behind in its "new" RC Crawler/Scale models, frankly price for price there is already much more and (I dare say) better offer Traxxas/Absima/MST etc etc etc.
Thanks. For the price I can't think of many rigs that could out-perform the Deadbolt, but I can think of three: the RGT Pioneer EX86110, the Element Ecto and the Sendero HD. For similar money there are quite a few other options that are similar in capability though - but that probably varies around the world, as pricing seems to be somewhat inconsistent across markets. In any case, I've found the deadbolt to be solid. Looking forward to seeing where we can take it next.
Man I've been buying axles, frames, motors, tires since Xmas. This is behind 3 other very expensive hobbies. I should have 3 10 scales ready to paint within a month and a half but I'm wondering if Amazon is over charging for the rtr ones. I really want a red cat everest model. I live in Canada and our dollar is weirdly worth a bit more than yours given the friends I have in that part of the worth and sending them stuff and also buying gear from Dave Jones haha. Where is your go to store? I'm not sure if youre speaking in US dollars because our customs tariffs from the US are disgusting to the point where no one I know orders anything from there. A 30usd nozzle for a 3d printer was gonna be 165cad last time I went to order something so I ordered it from the uk instead. Canadian customs are horrible. Friends in the US pay out the ass to ship to me and I pay next to nothing. Anyway rant aside. I have a budget of around 400cad I already have transceivers and batteries. I've come to learn the ali express route is bs due to poor qa and nothing is on-sale all the time like it seems. I just spent almost 5 k on a rigol oscilloscope and I'm sending it back haha. You'd think a company in the scientific community would have decent qa. Dji can do it. Haha. Great channel sorry for the rant
Ah wow that's pretty rough, eh. I buy a lot of my cars from ebay, new, as in Australia they regularly have sales of between 17% and 22% off. I understand ebay wears half of that and the seller the other half. It results in getting things for prices that simply cannot be matched without the help of eBay taking the hit as they do. Dunno how profitable it is for them but ebay has powered at least half the cars on my channel, maybe more. I have a list of hobby shops I love but my favourite is probably Asiatees. Of course, they're a lot closer to Australia than to North America, so postage isn't as bad to here as I understand it can be to you guys. Cheers

Heh fair enough. I haven't watched it in many years but seasons 3 to 8 were peak Simpsons and it's where this reference is found too :) Croc Dundee wasn't the pop culture phenomenon here like it was in the USA but I have seen it and of course, we hear the references from USA people frequently even now. Made quite an impact, that one!
I just picked one of these up, So far it's a meh truck. My Rochobby Atlas 4x4 is a better, more capable truck. I did stick a HW 1080 in it though. That's the next step for the Axial DB.

Sorry yours died. I've had the same experience with my Gladiator. I have 2 different SCX10 III here on the channel, the Gladiator and the JLU. The factory doesn't seem to set end-points correctly half the time on the RTRs. My favourite replacement servo for this is here: asiate.es/aff?l=162286&i=76070 Second fave one is this guy: asiate.es/aff?l=160541&i=76070 They're both great choices. Cheers!
@@RCTNT cheers mate. While i'm here, i picked up one of those one handed hot rc controllers the other day after seeing it in one of your vids. I love it !
The price and simpler transmission are attractive though. It will outperform the Gladiator with similar level of mods - indeed, it already out performs it on my tests here, as shown in previous videos. I do get where you're coming from though and I'd have the Gladiator over the BC if I had to choose.
It comes from the diffs, at least the one I showed, and it was present in the SCX10.3 rigs I have here too (all 3 of them). Fixed easily enough but yeah, not the best!
@@RCTNT Ahh... that mesh issue you mentioned? Last I heard from a channel called EXOCAGED RC, he thought it was the tollerances in the transmission. Either was it's a very good platform. I just dont personally get excited about a few minor changes, a different body, & a new name. That's just me. It's like modern 1:1 vehicles. They're basically all the same as far as reliability & warranties go, so the only choice is what wrapper do you want on it.
The clicking I'm referring to is definitely the diffs. Been like that since they released the new helical design over the original SCX10 setup, quite some years ago now. I've got enough different rigs here to be able to say there's quite a bit of variation underneath the different bodies and having tried to scratch build various rigs over the years, some chassis, axle and transmission designs are far superior to others. Sure is nice to have the choice, in any case! I'll have to look into the trans manufacturing clearances, I can't recall encountering that. It may very well be the case! Thanks for the tip.
3 being newer than 2 doesn't automatically make it better, though. Not all changes are performance oriented, and that's why I went into this one without assumptions. I do wonder whether putting the same tires on both might yield a different result, too. I may do that for all 4 1/10 Axial variants I have here (Deadbolt, BC, JLU & SCX10 Pro), that might be interesting!
Fair enough. I prefer to come in without assumptions, as sometimes that isn't the case. But you're usually going to be correct there, so fair enough! Cheers

Thanks for the tip! Will do
Deadbolt best bang for your buck !
It's definitely up there, particularly in the Performance category!
I was torn between these 2 for my 5 year old twins. I chose the basecamp soley because of the portals. Picked up two for $360 each. I cant wait to take my boys crawling.
Wow, legendary deal there! Nice one, those should give your kids hours of fun!
Very thorough. Class act review
Thank you! I appreciate the support :)
The XJ Deuce was perfect for me!!! 😎
Cool review in awesome backdrop! Not in the market for either of these any time soon, I am in the market for fun videos form RC-TNT! Thanks 😁✌
Aw shucks, thank you
What I do like more on the Deadbolt is that the tire do not rub the body right out of the box, and I am terrible at trimming. Axial should slightly modify the base camp body so it does not rub with torsion movement from the suspension. Any reccomendations on that?
Really, trimming is the best answer. It's possible you just haven't had the right tools. Try these:
amzn.to/4dsm1kC
The curved ones especially will help, but short blades are far better than long.
That dif is like fingers down a chalk board 😂
Been contemplating the deadbolt, as like the open style bodyshell, but after seeing the chassis in more detail, I think i'll give it a miss.
Yep, that's a good summary.
Great vid. How did you eliminate the clicking in the diffs?
That being said I do like the body of the Deadbolt better…
Thanks again bud!
The extra value on the base camp makes it a worthy choice. I like the deadbolt body better too, but the base camp is the better vehicle, yes!
I went to buy the deadbolt, they had a New 1/10 Honcho for $260. I grabbed it up!😜
Oh very nice! I'd have done the same :)
Hi Craig love the channel. Quick question. I've got the Deadbolt with stock 35T motor. Am I better off swapping to a Reedy SC480X(removed from ecto) esc or leave the stock Spektrum 40amp? Cheers
Actually just found a Hobbywing Quickrun 80A new in box with program card so that's probs the best option hey?
Depends what you want from the vehicle. Going to a higher quality motor in this case will do more than changing the esc, though if you do go to the 1080, you'll doubtless appreciate the tuning it offers.
I've written a guide for the wp-1080 to help you with that, by the way:
rc-tnt.com/how-to/hobbywing-wp-1080-brushed-esc/
Older but still quite relevant.
You would think that as time goes on in rc the cars would get more advanced, more scale and just better overall.
@@RCTNT Fair! I like the adaptation of the Holmes adage. We're not going 4S so higher turns is a good place to start for smoothness
@@Andy_Yates I like 4s but don't go higher than that on crawlers. Smoothness for the win, but a burst of speed on tap is good to have in the back pocket!
@@RCTNT Agreed, 4S is a great place to be on crawlers for a brushless setup. 4S direct power servos are beastly too :)
Aren't they just
Can you do a base camp budget upgrades and repeat performance video?
I'll do that for both, yep. Looking forward to seeing how they both go!
For the cost of a Base Camp that would nearly cover the cost a Deadbolt plus a SCX24 Deadbolt in the UK 🇬🇧 Good vids 👍
Heh yep a no brainer to go deadbolt over base camp in the case!
Ciao, sono sempre io! Avrei due domande, scusami: ché batteria hai utilizzato sul Deadbolt in questo video e come va questo radiocomando?
Same battery as in the other deadbolt video: Turnigy 7000mah 50C 3S pack.
The remote is good. Allows all needed adjustment for this model, comfortable to hold and easy to use
I love the look of the Deadbolts. But does the Basecamp win? You do get more for an extra $50 though? Right? :)
Stock vehicle vs stock vehicle, yes, the BC does outcrawl the Deadbolt - but only just. Next video, we'll drop about $50 into the Deadbolt to bring them both to outlay parity and then we'll see who's camp bolt is dead based!
@@RCTNT Nice :) Can't wait.
Hey mate, is the base camp worth $100 more? The deadbolt is $449 at metrohobbies atm
Well I think so, what with the portal axles, better tyres, metal links, better radio system... But the deadbolt is also great value and at metro's ebay store its $415 with eBay Plus member $25 discount:
www.ebay.com.au/itm/325522788310
@@RCTNT oh nice that price is even better, fair bit cheaper
sorry to be a pain but what would you prefer the base camp or a sendero
Not a pain at all, that's a great question. It's so good I may have to do a video on it because I don't know the answer.
Not too long ago I did a comparison between the Base Camp, Ecto, TRX4 Sport and RGT Pioneer. That might give you an indication of the general performance of these things, but it doesn't give a direct comparison between the two you're looking at.
Find that 4-way here: ruclips.net/video/psFjmvRa2Mc/видео.html
In short, I'd suggest Base Camp for all round use and Sendero for mostly technical crawling. Going with personal preference is also quite acceptable as there's not much between them for performance.
Very good instructional video 👍 Thanks for sharing 😁 my friend🤝👌
My pleasure, thank you for watching!
@@RCTNT 👍😆
@@RCTNT Totaly agree. For the praice here the RGT Pionner (€260,00) is a very cool Rig and the Ecto are in €399 and de Axial €360/370 so...
@@pandacrawler6x6 that makes the Pioneer a compelling choice, then!
@@RCTNT Indeed :-D
With the New Element at 299$ I’m wondering where that will stand against these 2. Interesting.
Me too! As soon as I can get my hands on one we'll find out!
Cheers
'that's not a knoif, THIS is a knoif" lol
I see you've played knifey-spooney before mate
@@RCTNT NO, dude, that's from the movie Crocodile Dundee! I can't belief you missed the reference!
I referenced The Simpsons parody of that scene from CD. I didn't miss the reference, I just went a level deeper, haha
@@RCTNT Well, I can honestly say I have never watched one episode of the simpsons so I wouldn't get the reference. Hence why it went RIGHT ova ma head! haha
Heh fair enough. I haven't watched it in many years but seasons 3 to 8 were peak Simpsons and it's where this reference is found too :)
Croc Dundee wasn't the pop culture phenomenon here like it was in the USA but I have seen it and of course, we hear the references from USA people frequently even now. Made quite an impact, that one!
I just picked one of these up, So far it's a meh truck. My Rochobby Atlas 4x4 is a better, more capable truck. I did stick a HW 1080 in it though. That's the next step for the Axial DB.
Sorry the deadbolt has been disappointing. Hope your mods make it better!
I’d take a deadbolt over the basecamp all day long
I'm looking forward to developing a more informed opinion on the base camp but my long experience with the deadbolt is that it's a superb performer that can be modified easily to be very competitive. More videos soon!
"it's loose and small" that's what she said!
I suppress the urge to say it every time there's an opening for it because it's not my thing on these videos (Matt already has it covered in the crawler space and I don't want to seem derivative), but that doesn't mean I'm not thinking it every time!!
@@RCTNT Yeah I used to drive my ex gf batty with it......along with many MANY other off colour jokes!

thats the same controller that you get from a scx24
And it's fine, too. I like it.
It's nothing similar
What's that? The two rigs you mean?
Gday mate, another interesting vid. Not sure if youve had much to do with the early bronco, but i got mine yesterday and the dig servo died the first time i tried it. Do you know of any alternatives to the spektrum servo that would last longer than about 10 seconds ??
Sorry yours died. I've had the same experience with my Gladiator. I have 2 different SCX10 III here on the channel, the Gladiator and the JLU. The factory doesn't seem to set end-points correctly half the time on the RTRs.
My favourite replacement servo for this is here: asiate.es/aff?l=162286&i=76070
Second fave one is this guy: asiate.es/aff?l=160541&i=76070
They're both great choices. Cheers!
@@RCTNT cheers mate. While i'm here, i picked up one of those one handed hot rc controllers the other day after seeing it in one of your vids. I love it !
Oh cool! Glad you like it. Takes a bit of getting used to but it's a fun one.
To me the Basecamp is a yawner 🥱.
Just a rebodied & renamed version of the Gladiator.
The price and simpler transmission are attractive though. It will outperform the Gladiator with similar level of mods - indeed, it already out performs it on my tests here, as shown in previous videos.
I do get where you're coming from though and I'd have the Gladiator over the BC if I had to choose.
@@RCTNT
Well, at least they got the clicking noise fixed in the original 10.3 trans.
It comes from the diffs, at least the one I showed, and it was present in the SCX10.3 rigs I have here too (all 3 of them). Fixed easily enough but yeah, not the best!
@@RCTNT
Ahh... that mesh issue you mentioned?
Of course it’s no surprise that Basecamp much superior that deadbolt which is based on scx10 ll
@@RCTNT latest version always better the previous LOL no review needed LOL
Fair enough. I prefer to come in without assumptions, as sometimes that isn't the case. But you're usually going to be correct there, so fair enough! Cheers
