  • [Apologies on the framing of this video, I accidentally cropped it too much. Hoping it not too much of an issue. Thanks and Best Wishes~ Melissa.]
    Welcome and thank you for joining and allowing me to be a part of your ASL Learning experience! My name is Melissa and I am a CODA (Children of Deaf Adults). I have been a Sign Language Interpreter most of my life from childhood into the professional world, have been teaching and tutoring for over 20+years (high school and college levels) as well as heavily involved with the Deaf and ASL community.
    As a CODA, ASL is my native language, I grew up with Deaf culture and in the Deaf world. Its who I am and with my life experience; I have witnessed moments where I seen the painful disconnect, lack of communication and relationships and wished more would know how to sign and to create more access with our Deaf individuals, just to make our world a better place.
    My passion is to teach and share American Sign Language with individuals such as yourself! Especially, To all that have Deaf family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors or just want to learn this amazing, expressive, hands-on language! So congrats and thank you for taking your time to make your community a better place by doing so and I am honored you are joining me and allowing me to be a part of your ASL journey, So welcome!!!!
    The purpose of these videos are to help you gain more ASL vocabulary, concepts, practice phrases and an opportunity to improve along with encouraging your sign fluency.
    So Let's begin this journey!
    These videos are voice interpreted for those who are auditory learners and struggle with learning a non-verbal language and need some help understanding (receptive skills). Each video brings access to those with low-vision blindness for near sighted blindness.
    For the TRUE ASL immersion experience, after watching it once with the sound on, I encourage you watch the video again and "MUTE" the sound, so you are gaining receptive skills too. If the sign is too fast for you, you can go to settings and hit the “speed” option to slow the video down.
    When you completed the learning, go to the drop down box and review the vocabulary list, as well as the BONUS ASL sentences.
    Best wishes, Good Luck and don't forget to show your support… Like, Subscribe, Hit the “bell” option, make a comment or share these videos with others that are interested to learn as well!

    Classifiers are handshapes that have a series of possible meanings and functions; but they are meaningless and useless by themselves unless a noun is signed or fingerspelled before the signed classifier. Singing or fingerspelling a noun before a classifier contributes in giving a meaning or function to the classifier. Classifiers can have a definition depending on their:
    1. location in the space of signing
    2. closeness to a specific part of the body
    3. orientation of the palm of the hand
    4. orientation of the knuckles

    OK, this is FANTASTIC! DO MORE PLEASE! It is beyond the basic and somewhat intermediate level which is helping propel me forward. I don't need anymore basic or beginner-intermediate level videos of ASL. THIS is functional and at a more rapid pace, it's more real-life. Please keep this wonderful learning happening!!!!!

    Thanks so much for this video, and I hope you don't mind me being a little "long winded" with this.
    I'm on the East Coast in NJ and a pilot out of Philadelphia so I fly to many different areas and I know signs can be "regional" or people may refer to things different ways, such as out here we call Coke or Pepsi "soda" though places in the midwest, a lot call it "pop" which brings me to the sign I saw you use for "Pizza".
    I've seen that numerous different ways, but the way you did it was the first time I saw it that way. I've mostly seen people doing it on other videos with some variation of the bent "2" or "V" and drawing a "Z", or instead of the palm down like you had it, palm up with the wrist kind of being twisted around.
    The point I'm really making is this is the reason I get so much out of watching your videos, and other instructors videos or vlogs, because depending on where they are I can see the differences. So while traveling coast to coast or in between and I do come across someone I may be able to recognize a sign that may be "regional" to that area.
    Thanks and looking forward to your next one :)

    • @melissacayton1111
      @melissacayton1111  3 года назад +4

      Hey RIchard! I am so glad you recognize the regional signs and aware of them. Funny, I most of the time sign PIZZA with the two "z's". I think I just flip flop with various signs... for this video, I used the handshape one to show the description of the pizza slice as well. The extra being exposed to the various forms are bonuses! Glad you are recognizing them and knowing they are "not wrong" just various forms. :) Keeeep at it!

    It would really help me a lot if instead of glossing your signs into English, you would simply vocally speak the signs (sign-by-sign) even if it results in chopped up English sentences. Signs evolve so quickly that its difficult to keep up with modern usage. I had to rewind several times to figure out the meaning of the "voices off" sign from context, as that sign was new to me. It would just make it easier to learn new signs without having to drop everything to figure out a novel new sign from its context (and then you've still never 100% confident that you even got it right).
    Also I do try and watch your videos muted numerous times, before breaking down and finally resorting to turning on the sound.

    Hello Mellisa, I just started to learn ASL on line at my local community college to help communicate with a coworker I would like to be friends with who is in the deaf community. Are you still on you tube ? I am from PA 25 minutes outside of Philadelphia in the suburbs. We just started learning classifiers and I’m very confused.

    • @melissacayton1111
      @melissacayton1111  Год назад

      Hello Allison, I am still here, not quick about checking it, but I try my best. :) I am in the West Coast. If it helps... Classifiers are just hand shapes that describe something. Like MAN (then use a Classifier to describe him, like "tall) your classifier is what shows he is tall.
      Did that help? Eck! Sorry so late by the way...
