You *DO NOT* need to have your device on the same network (Wifi/ethernet) as your PC to use Steam Link. A majority of people seem to be confused on here about how this works. I've gone back and forth with few people in the comments so I tested it a few times yesterday and today and looked it up to be sure. This is tested and verified by me and I'll link an article here as well that verifies it. I have an iPad Air gen 4 with cellular, and an iPhone 11, a bluetooth keyboard and mouse (or an Xbox controller if I want to use that) and I can play any game from my steam library while I'm away from home. (Some games you have to use keyboard/mouse to play) (YES ios DOES support a mouse even though some people think it doesn't) Your PC needs to be on and remain on with Steam open for this to work as well. (Just leave your PC on and turn the monitor off when you leave the house). Steam Link just STREAMS your game from your PC to your mobile device, Steam Link is NOT a server or anything like that. If you have an old or low end gaming PC, that's what you'll see through Steam Link. Your mobile device/Steam Link does not do any of the work to run the game. It just uses the info your PC gives it, which is why your PC and mobile device need to be connected to the internet at all times. (wifi, ethernet, or cellular). Nice! I’ve been using this to stream games to my firestick tv so I can have a bigger screen to play on. This clears up some things like that you need the pc, maybe in the future they’ll do something like stadia where it’s from their servers which would be cool. But this is great nonetheless to make it feel like your playing on a console.

Steam doesn't test your "Internet", it tests your router; the stream is not uploaded to a server and then downloaded on your phone, it's simply moved from your PC to your phone through your home network; Internet speed is technically irrelevant. EDIT: If you want to eliminate lag, make sure you're not far away from your router when playing on your phone and avoid walls and metal artifacts from being between the two; it is *always* recommended to connect your desktop PC to your router through Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
Technically your laptop is still doing all the work, it's just casting it to your phone/tablet screen. All of the CPU, GPU and general haul is still on your computer's side. Think of this like cloud gaming- but cloud gaming just in your house and just for you.

No, steam link just streams what your pc is doing. AKA you are still using your PC, just streaming the video and controls to your phone instead of your monitor, keyboard, and mouse. You're "remotely" using your computer via steams progam ui.

Your PC steams the game to your mobile device over the internet connection. So yes, your PC and phone both need to be connected to the internet, it doesn't have to be the same source of internet. My PC is connected via ethernet, my phone/ipad on cell data.
The network part of this setup has nothing to do with your internet. It’s all local so the network speed results are from your PC to your device. Best results is your PC plugged into your router (hopefully a gigabit switch) and your device on a 5Ghz AC network. Any modern device and router should give you wireless AC so you should be able to connect at 433Mbps or 866Mbps which is plenty for a good stream. On my network I get 125Mbps in the steam app and my iPad is connected to the network at 800Mbps with my PC connected gigabit Ethernet.

It is not internet connection, it is local network connection, internet speed does not affect the stream quality, you don't even need internet connection to make it works, all you need is a WiFi router. Your WiFi router and WiFi equipment on your PC and Android device are the only things affect the stream quality.
I do it over cell data. I can play on my Ipad/phone just fine from anywhere (even when I'm not home). Just leave your PC on with steam running and go out (or disconnect your mobile device from wifi) and see if it still connects.
This is helpful for someone like me because I can use tablet for a screen and play anywhere in my house instead of having to go and sit down in my computer room just to play games like Persona 5, God Of War, And Okami

Quick tip: If you want full screen games on your device you need yo search your android/iOS resolution and make a custom resolution in PC graphics, therefore it will change it in game also.

It's nice being able to play some of these games in mobile, yet the fact that it only works via a constant wifi connection as opposed to say, downloading the steam games to your phone without the need for an internet connection, really bothers me. I hope in the future Steam makes downloading steam games to mobile a possibility. Or at least grant us the power of making APK files for the games so we can install them to our devices like any other kind of app.
What's the point of this app if you have to have Steam up and running on your PC? I keep my PC off unless I'm using it. Just use Steam on the computer. Now if the app allowed you to log into Steam on the mobile device and access your games from there, that would be a totally different story! My Internet sucks (over an hour to play a 5 minute video), so I always play games offline and take my laptop to a relative's house to download the games.
Well for instance. I can be playing in another room from my PC. Or if I’m in the road I can bring my laptop and play on my mobile phone on the go. There are some use case for it. As a parent it’s great to be able to pick up my phone/iPad anywhere in the house and play a game there.

I do. Just leave your PC on with Steam running and open the app while you're away. Should connect like normal. Not as high quality though cause cell data isn't as good as wifi.

It's nice being able to play some of these games in mobile, yet the fact that it only works via a constant wifi connection as opposed to say, downloading the steam games to your phone without the need for an internet connection, really bothers me. I hope in the future Steam makes downloading steam games to mobile a possibility. Or at least grant us the power of making APK files for the games so we can install them to our devices like any other kind of app.

What's the point of this app if you have to have Steam up and running on your PC? I keep my PC off unless I'm using it. Just use Steam on the computer. Now if the app allowed you to log into Steam on the mobile device and access your games from there, that would be a totally different story! My Internet sucks (over an hour to play a 5 minute video), so I always play games offline and take my laptop to a relative's house to download the games.
Well for instance. I can be playing in another room from my PC. Or if I’m in the road I can bring my laptop and play on my mobile phone on the go. There are some use case for it.
As a parent it’s great to be able to pick up my phone/iPad anywhere in the house and play a game there.
