  • One of the secrets of Mikhail Tal's magic was his strong intuition. In complicated positions, when it was impossible to calculate all variations, he relied on his gut feeling and sacrificed material instinctively. In this game he intuitively sacrifices three pawns to open as many files and diagonals as possible, in order to activate his pieces and prepare the ground for a deadly attack on the enemy king.

    In French positions with b6 by black, getting rid of the "bad bishop" is almost always less important than getting rid of white's best bishop and removing his bishop pair advantage to boot!

    4:11 By "pawn chain" are you referring to the term coined by Nimzovich in My System, in which there is a chapter called 'The Pawn-Chain'?

    • @chesswisdom
      @chesswisdom  7 месяцев назад

      Yes.

    • @comic4relief
      @comic4relief 7 месяцев назад

      I am afraid I must quibble with that. According to Nimzovich's meaning there is just one pawn-chain in this position, consisting of four Pawns, on d4, e5, d5 and e6, or as he might have said, White,s Q4, K5 and, Black's Q4, K3.
      "...two consecutive series of Pawns abutting on one another in consecutive diagonals.." from the first page of that chapter.

      Yes, in the excerpt you quoted he talks about black-and-white pawn chain. But at the same time, White has his own chain (d4, e5), while Black's chain consists of black pawns on d5 and e6.

      @@chesswisdom The first sentence:
      After 1. P-K4, P-K3; 2. P-Q4, P-Q4; 3. P-K5, a Black and White Pawn-chain has been formed.

      @chesswisdom  7 месяцев назад

      Yes, and the third sentence: " d4 should be
      considered the base of the white chain, while
      the e6-pawn performs the same function for the
      black chain."
