There are roughly 3 major style of costume/clothing /fashion trend in ancient China. From ancient to Tang dynasty they were a bit of rough and wide similar to Japanese traditional costume which was influenced heavily by China's fashion trend at the time. I think the costume style used in this Zang Hai Zhuan/ The Legend of Zang Hai is from the 2nd major fashion trend between the Tang to Ming dynasties. The 3rd/ last fashion trend was from the last dynasty " Ching " that was simplified to today's "Qi Pao" . This story is about the life of " Zang Hai " who is a genius and legend . He is very good at using natural or artificial phenomena to play with the psychology of people to reach his purposes and fulfill his dreams.

ZangHai Zhuan is going to be an epic production! The director you saw at the end praising Xiao Zhan is Zheng Xiaolong, a highly respected movie and tv series director and screenwriter. And the cast has many excellent artists, apart from Xiao Zhan, whose ability as an actor and handsomeness we all admire, the actress Zhang JingYi is very well known and very beautiful and the rest of the cast! Wallace Chung, Michelle Chen and all the others are very famous actors. The set design and costumes look so precious.
This is actually the "behind the scenes" from Youku, so the soundtrack is sometimes interrupted by the crew speaking .
It will be very interesting for sure, there will be politics, intrigues, revenge and such. The screenwriting is an original story inspired by the Grave Robbers' Chronicles books.
I can understand why you found Zhu Yan a bit childish, her character is actually like that if not worse in the original book, I personally liked the Longest Promise because it's a bit like a fairytale and at the end she gets better (unfortunately a bit late)... it was a great performance by Xiao Zhan, but I think this one, where he plays a more morally grey character, will be more interesting for you.

As far as I know, this drama is about politics, revenge and some Feng Shui stuff I think.
There is no historical background of this series, but the costumes take Ming Dynasty as reference.
The pattern on Xiao Zhan red uniform is a peacock. The embroidery represents the official hierarchy level. Peacock is on 3rd class level

@@coffeereaction In the clip about BRICS. Minute 5:56 The face of the old man with glasses is Sondhi Limthongkul. He is also one of the media moguls and has good relations with this media channel. He and the founders of the channel were former mob leaders who were involved in bloodshed a few years ago. Nowadays, he regularly makes RUclips videos and attacks the idea of the United States and always glorifies China. He had been shot down but survived. I didn't like the Longest Promise either. I watched to the end and it doesn't get much better lol. Thankfully, he won't have to film dramas like that anymore, and has more control over the projects he's filmed since.
Zang Hai Zhuan looks so good, and his upcoming movie looks really good too! I have high hopes!
My 2nd favourite XZ drama (The Untamed is forever #1) was one from last year called "The Youth Memories" (also called "Where Dreams Begin" but they changed the english name right when it started airing for some reason. I think WDB was a better name, but oh well). It follows XZ's character and his group of friends from the 1970s to the early 2000s as China opened up contact with the rest of the world again. It's beautiful. All the actors were amazing and the characters felt like real people you might meet.
