Longitudinal seating is a retrograde step, put in simply to create more standing room. Not a pleasant experience for the passenger having to stare at the people opposite on long journeys. The Tyne & Wear Metro is an interurban railway with some pleasant views, not an underground mass transit subway.
Go on the Metro at a weekday 8AM or in some cases 5PM and you'll soon sharp find out why we have longitudinal seating. It is far better and you can still see out the windows if you want.
