  • Science communicator Fran Scott makes a lightbulb using everyday materials such as batteries, a jam jar and some pencil lead.
    IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder...
    What you need to get started is: A pie dish, a medium sized jar, crocodile clips with red and black wires attached, a pair of scissors, a large bulldog clip, 8 D sized batteries, pencil lead (0.5 mm thick), a tea light, a lighter and some electrical tape.
    1. Place your pie dish on the the centre of your work top
    2. Clip your crocodile clips into the bulldog clip (the bulldog clips is just used as a 'holder' for your crocodile clips)
    3. Place your tea light on your pie dish right next to your bulldog clip
    4. Place your pencil lead between the two crocodile clips
    5. Use your electrical tape to tape your 8 D batteries together tightly together to make a giant battery
    6. Tape the wire from your black crocodile clip to one end of your giant battery
    7. Get an adult to light your tea light with a lighter
    8. Now place your jar over the bulldog and tea light.
    9. Once the flame is extinguished hold the red crocodile clip wire against the other end of your giant battery
    10. Now sit back and watch your homemade lightbulb glow.
    Live Experiments: Our resident science demo thrill-seekers will give the RUclips audience their big science treat each week with an experiment where you can find out how to make food dance, power a light bulb with household objects and create mega smoke rings!

    In electricity, a battery is a device consisting of one or more electrochemical cells that convert stored chemical energy into electrical energy.

    I couldn't help but notice that also. Just reinforcing kiddies that pencils DO use lead when in fact this isn't the case

  • @dourabbawinner
    @dourabbawinner 11 лет назад

    The pencil lead is made of graphite. There are other ways of doing this that produce better light.

  • @dourabbawinner
    @dourabbawinner 11 лет назад

    Well, if by sticking with graphite you can take two pieces and space them proper and run enough current to create an arcing effect.

  • @dourabbawinner
    @dourabbawinner 11 лет назад

    Larger pieces of graphite. Like stripping the center out of a regular wood pencil.

    a light bulb that barely glows
    if you wanted to you could let it burn just before it dies out, then light the candle and because there is no oxygen and the lead is thinner, it will glow brighter without burning out.

  • @DJHamxa

    Thank you for making a lightbulb that costs me $20 more and can barely light my room!

    for batteries it is easier to use paper to roll them in A4 should be enough. and in the platter you can use water to have a hermetic seal

    So, you censor the eveready batteries the first time they are shown, but not the next time?

  • @JoeAllenDev
    @JoeAllenDev 11 лет назад

    Or you could just use the candle without the other stuff, save loads of money and get a much brighter light.

  • @OliverBack
    @OliverBack 11 лет назад

    bacaue all the the oxygen was used up, that was the idea of what the candle was for, it was surposed to go out

    and more power? the graphite probably wont even glow with the amount of power they used.

  • @gamezoid1234

    how long would it take for it to suck all the juice out of those batteries?

  • @alltimelowinzasion
    @alltimelowinzasion 11 лет назад

    if you put a lot of pieces of lead in at once, would it burn brighter because there is more to burn/glow, or the same because its the same amount of electricity running through it, or less because the electricity is being split up into each piece making each piece burn at 1/x (x being the number of lead pieces) times the brightness of just 1? or would they all combine their light making it burn normal?

  • @jecjoker
    @jecjoker 11 лет назад

    Works better with the jar and lid, metal snips, and paper clips. (There's more but ehh...)

  • @johnvargasv

    Somebody has already said this and got a reply saying the British call cells batteries, but given that this Is a science video, the term cell should be used instead of battery as you should use the proper terminology on an educational video.
