  • Science/Engineering Presenter Garry Lavin shows us that eggs shells aren't as brittle as some might think. In this video he lays bricks on them to show an egg shells sheer strength. He also uses his drawing skills to show why they are so strong.
    Live Experiments:
Our resident daredevil science fiends will give the RUclips audience their big science treat each week with an experiment where you can find out how to make food dance, power a light bulb with household objects and create mega smoke rings!
    RECIPE
IMPORTANT: You will need one sober adult with a sense of scientific wonder...
What you need to get started is: 6 eggs (You only need 4 but I'd advise 6 as a precaution), 3 bricks, a bowl, masking tape, a marker, a tablespoon, a knife, scissors and some old sheets of newspaper
    1. Place some old newspaper on your work surface to keep your home clean
    2. Tape one strip of masking tape around the centre of the egg
    3. Get a marker and draw around the centre of your strip of masking tape
    4. Use you table spoon to hit one end of your egg to make an indent
    5. Then use a blunt knife to pierce through the indent and drain your egg
    6. Once the egg is drained carefully cut around the line on your masking tape (It has to be perfect or the egg shell will collapse under the strain of the bricks - so take your time.)
    7. You can now remove the masking tape from your egg shell - repeat this process until you have eggs shells of equal size.
    8. Create a rectangular shape with 4 egg shells that will be used to support your bricks.
    9. Line up a brick so that the for corners will are evenly distributed on the egg shells
    10. Place one brick at a time on top of the egg shells
    11. Remember to stand well back after each brick is laid on in case the eggs collapse.
    12. Stand back and leave for a 10 second interval before you place on your second brick
    13. Stand back for another 10 second interval and then lay on your final brick
    14. Slowly remove the bricks once you have completed this experiment"

They had a similar problem with the first jet liners, until they cottoned onto the problem of metal fatigue. Hence why rounded cabin windows became standard.

I like how the presenter isn't like a presenter.

Strength to weight ratio is more impressive when you think about the weight of 4 eggshells and one brick.

That's because it's a normal wall building (Or 'London') brick. They're meant to have a hollow on one side.
It's so when adding the brick to a wall that's being erected, the cement can stick inside this hollow, giving a brick wall more strength. It's why they are the most commonly used wall building brick. They're lighter, stronger and easier to work with.
I hope this helped and indeed enlightened you. :)

Actually, shapes created by chains and ropes are NOT parabolas! They are described with special equation and called Catenary! Check here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catenary

I worked in a brick factory for a while, in between computer jobs. The hollow is called a Frog and its original purpose was to reduce the amount of brick tax payable to the government. The Frog is still there simply to lower the manufacturing cost (less material) of each brick.

1:07 it is not a parabola, it's hyperbolic cosine. I've calculated on a standard physics course at the university how a string or chain hangs freely with both ends tighten up, and the result is definitely cosh.

No, the titanic broke in half because the bow filled with water and tipped the ship upwards with it's stern clear out of the water. The compartment system in the titanic caused this unusual sinking. If the ship was damaged in the center it actually would not have sunk or split in half.

  • @Ninjastripy

    parabola is y=x^2
    catenary is y = cosh(x) = (e^x + e^-x)/2
    They just look similar

  • @GarryLavin

I have to admit that was a slip of the tongue, with Titanic being shorthand for big ship. But ships have round portholes because stress starts in corners and has been known to begin in such a way and travelled around the hull so that the ship breaks in half after a stress event a lot less than an iceberg.

and all falling things technically follow an ellipse, not a parabola, they just reach the ground before they can change direction in the x plane

  • @W1n5t0n20
    @W1n5t0n20 11 лет назад

1:00 technically that is a catenary, they are different, parabola is y=x^2 a catenary is y=cosh(x) or y=(e^x + e^-x)/2

when u cut an egg, u damage its integrity. whole eggs can easily support 4 bricks. the title is very misleading: ur not really comparing the strengths of the two materials. ur looking at how many bricks 4 eggs can support. having said all, the video is very much appreciated. thanks

Try leaving the fresh eggs as they are (without removing the white and yolk) but secure them to a table/floor to keep them standing. Repeat the part of the experiment where the bricks are placed on top of the egg shells and see what happens. (:

+Emy Young The egg is the strongest at the top and the bottom (or at the highest point of the arch). If you hold an egg in your hand and squeeze it on the top and the bottom, the egg doesn’t break because you are adding pressure to the ends which are the strongest parts of the egg. #funfact :))
