Always take a percentage of payment prior to work starting or even scheduling. Makes it a lot easier to collect the final amount due at the end of the job.
Exactly! Sound business practice. It takes the pressure off of the customer knowing that it is just a small amount left to pay and they can walk away knowing that bill is done. The contractor has their money and are not worried about using supplies that they have to eat the cost of the job. His entire explanation does not hold up. This is what happens to some funeral homes. It should be a pretty simple straight forward job, but when they pulled up the old stuff, they found a crawl space underneath that was in horrendous disrepair and wildly uneven. They couldn't put the baseboard down the way you're actually supposed to, so they offered them two options: we can redo the crawl space supports too which will take way longer and cost way more, or we can just try our best to get it level and it'll still cost a little more than we were expecting and the floor will start warping over time. He just recently had a client who took awhile to pay; it wasn’t a small sum of money but then randomly his client was like oh yeah I have your check all ready to go and thankfully his client ended up being super nice and cooperative.
You know, it’s kinda funny, several years ago I would’ve been extremely angry at the “you should focus on making more money so you can pay your bills” comment at the end, because “making more money” is simply impossible for a large percentage of people in the US. Wage stagnation, price gouging, union busting, impenetrable debt walls, limited access to higher education, and a host of other things stack on top of one another to genuinely make it impossible to pull yourself up by your bootstraps and there are far more people in that situation than anyone realizes because congress refused to even discuss a bill that would simply measure what that number is. However! After having spent the better part of two years researching personal finance, starting my own business, making smart financial decisions, all things no one teaches in public schools, I’ve been able to save up to 50% of my income while not changing my lifestyle and even buying a new car this last December, I do understand where you’re coming from by saying “focus on making more money to pay your bills.” When you start to learn about finance, and especially when it comes to things like building stable financial footing, paying your bills in full and on time is a massive lesson to learn. That’s also intertwined with the lesson/ability of having such a good handle on your finances that you know, at any given moment, if you can afford something. Those lessons are significantly easier to learn if you have any amount of disposable income, and the reality is that the vast majority of people simply don’t and that’s something that we should strive toward changing. Now, all that being said, if you’re financial situation is in a state where you have to prioritize which bills to pay and in what order you should not hire people to do mundane work you could be doing for free
I like how you understand the humanity of it, while also not accepting excuses. You don’t force customers to wash their house, so just wait and do it whenever you can afford to comfortably.
We have a simple rule: we get paid at the end of the job before leaving. We ensure that before working that the customer signs a quote displaying their intent to pay. If they refuse to pay before we leave they will receive a letter in the mail when to show up to court. Simple as that.
My father ran his own business in my childhood. He always said that it was never the people you expected that would give you a hard time without getting paid. The poor people always had money on hand in terms of cash to pay him, because they would’ve saved up before calling him. It was the wealthy that were living beyond their means that would it be difficult to get paid from. Sometimes they’d call to book him when they had enough to get so much of a project done, because they could pay that much. When he figured that was the case, he try to be accommodating, waiving fees for the return trip when they called again. Because even though those people would never ask him to do something like that, he appreciated their business. They were honest and treated him well and fairly. If a person hasn’t got it budgeted to pay for service, then perhaps I should save a little money first. That’s just not right to do anything different, Without making arrangements upfront.
I run a hvacr business and I don’t ask people to pay upfront but a deposit is a great way to do business cause when I order thousands of dollars of equipment for someone I expect to do the job and be paid. Carlos, let me explain. People pay for things because they might not have the ability to do what a professional can do or they might not have the time.
They allow families to get by with bull. A business is a business regardless of the service. Pay what you owe. Period! This is the problem with people. I can't stand people who do not pay their bills. Selfish and only looking out for themselves.

For example, my parents hired a contractor to redo the base boards and flooring in the living room of their rental property. As a plumber I just cover the vents until you pay. Have fun flushing your toilet
However! After having spent the better part of two years researching personal finance, starting my own business, making smart financial decisions, all things no one teaches in public schools, I’ve been able to save up to 50% of my income while not changing my lifestyle and even buying a new car this last December, I do understand where you’re coming from by saying “focus on making more money to pay your bills.”
When you start to learn about finance, and especially when it comes to things like building stable financial footing, paying your bills in full and on time is a massive lesson to learn.
Yeah doesnt make it ok how he said that -_-

Everyone has an opinion but not everyone has a business for a reason. U are definitely on point 🙌💪💪✅
We have a simple rule: we get paid at the end of the job before leaving. We ensure that before working that the customer signs a quote displaying their intent to pay. If they refuse to pay before we leave they will receive a letter in the mail when to show up to court. Simple as that.
never worth going to court over.
As a guy who owns my own repair business I love your videos man
👊🏻
Point taken! It’s all about perspective
I run a hvacr business and I don’t ask people to pay upfront but a deposit is a great way to do business cause when I order thousands of dollars of equipment for someone I expect to do the job and be paid. When the job is done payment is due at the completion of the job not when they fell like paying

Buy your own power washer…. The guy usin it probably didn’t graduate high school. You can use it just as well. Not to mention most of the time they gotta use Your water. Just do it yourself. SAVE MONEY! What am I sayin this looks like some place out West……No wonder they’re payin these guys to do simple chores.
If "earning more money" was as simple as it sounded, a lot more people would be doing it.
was with you til the end
"I wouldn't prepay for something..." Bro, you literally prepay for almost everything. It's only those of us who offer services who are dumb enough to collect after we've done the work. Are you going to pay for that car you drive after it hits 100k miles? Do you pay for your groceries after you eat them? Do you prepay at McDonald's or demand that you eat the burger first?
You expect these people to accept logic? Good luck
That’s a big difference between purchasing goods and purchasing services. All your examples are items. But many service jobs don’t have prepay in them.
Don’t comment if you don’t understand.
i do at least 50%, usually covers the materials of the job (or most of it) which i can live with for most jobs i do for non-regulars.
- half now, half when the job is done, if you sense equivocation - the lean is very important, a necessary protection in my experience
You homeless? Pfft just buy a house
- This guy probably.
This analogy is so dumb lmao
Damn the ratio on this video lmao. I’ve seen some of his other videos and he isn’t a giant smelly douche in them. Word from a casual fan… probably don’t insult your audience.
You are right, if they had you come to their and provide a service they need to pay. If they could not afford it at the time then don't waste time of the business owners who provided the service in the first place. I appreciate my gardener I make it a point to make sure I pay them.
Dude, you charge more per day than an auto mechanic, for unskilled labor! Most people I see running the machine, are not paid that well, considering the junk they drive, and the tattered clothes they wear! How much do you pay your employees? Can they afford to pay for the same service they provide for others? Yeah, thought not!
If it's so easy to do then why don't they start their own business? Why are they choosing to work for him?
@@calebpeters6267 because they aren't smart enough to know how to file for a llc lol
@@JoseMartinez-ll7vo seriously lol
@@calebpeters6267 dumb people think they smart on internet101, it get me everytime.
@@calebpeters6267 I find it easy to shoot guns accurately and cook good food, does that mean I should enlist in the army or open a restaurant?
Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed. In a perfect world all your rules would make sense, problem is this world sucks ass. And all the stupid people are your customers!!
??? These rules still make sense. Grow up!
@@chedched12 don't think you read his comment right. Read it a few more times and then comment.
If your customer can afford several solar panels on a north facing surface they can afford to pay sooner than later.
You clearly don't understand. If you have a business that provides a service that goes unpaid, you have to try to collect. He is saying to go after then with a contractor lean instead of causing damage or being threatening.
@@NathanaelD I thought that’s what we were talking about. What are these other guys on about then?
Contractor leins work best when they're having you do work to sell the home lol
I freaking LOVE These videos. As a contractor, I Approve this message.
Pressure washer: 100-300$.
"I don't pay for things up front and I don't expect my customers to either"
Does he charge more than what a pressure washer costs to do a job that takes 10-15 minutes? Whole thing seems sketchy to me
Yeah but are you gonna buy a preasure washer with a long hose, climb on your own roof, spray all the panels depending on how many you have, and spend a day doing that? For some people it's no, so they hire others.
Honestly I would just get a hose and press the tip to make a pressure washer
@@congratulationsmerry6386 🤣
@@wjrsb58 i mean i do it monthly and it works fine
@@congratulationsmerry6386 that's great if it works for you.
Keep crushing it’ coming up on our house wash season here in Connecticut!
This "work" is the simplest thing to do ever. Like you're just spraying solar tiles... sooo hard 😭
He’s not running a charity.
Even if its easy work, it is still work and if you hire someone you pay them. That is quite simple honestly.
You are a very understanding man. Sometimes people wanna pay but something happens and you have to consider what’s necessary at the moment
Only big rollers with dip pockets trying to evade some type of taxes or big noise would do this . If you have employees you don’t depend on this job much less the company. 🤔
Damn dude, a little hostile, huh?? I'll just go BUY my own pressure washer and do it myself
Super
wow just really roasted all of his viewers in one sentence
I don’t understand allot of these videos or what they talk about but they’re still very enjoyable to watch and slowly learn from, you make really good content!
Why do I find the fact that he’s mostly always mad in these videos so entertaining ?
